News::Civilization: Beyond Earth First Look

Bill Lavoy (Prima Games): Civilization: Beyond Earth is an upcoming turn based strategy game that is currently in development by Firaxis Games. Following the hugely successful Civilization V, Beyond Earth aims to retain the core values that players have come to love, but also build on them with a fresh take on concepts such as the technology tree and ideologies. Set approximately 250 years after present day, Civilization: Beyond Earth begins with players looking to the stars after events referred to as The Great Mistake. Although a historical blackout prevents gamers from figuring out exactly what that is, it's clear that humankind must leave earth and set out to re-establish themselves on other planets. For veterans of the franchise, this narrative is a complete turnaround from what they have come to expect of the series, although not at all unwelcome.

News::Make it a (Virtual) Reality: P.T.

VRFocus - One of Gamescom 2014s biggest announcements very nearly slipped everyone earlier this week when Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced a new horror title named P.T., with a playable teaser released onto the PlayStation 4 Store. Looking back on the reveal, its deliberate shroud of mystery and placement straight after a showing of Hideo Kojimas Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain should have been clear signs that it was more Konami trickery. Sure enough, P.T. turned out to really be an extended teaser for a new Silent Hill title, Silent Hills.

When you think about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, especially if you are a veteran of the game, its difficult not to think about Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida. News::Naughty Dog is throwing a Photo Mode contest for The Last of Us Remastered

Capturing cool, beautiful, or otherwise standout moments in videogames can be such a joy, and I'm hopeful that more developers will follow the recent examples set by inFamous: Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered by including built-in photo tools. Fun for us, good marketing for them.

Speaking of the latter game, Naughty Dog is holding a photo contest in the US now through September 5 with prizes like a poster-sized image of your photo signed by the development team and a Joel and Ellie statuette up for grabs.

The full instructions are linked below, but essentially you'll need to use the PS4's Share button and send your photo in via Twitter. Entries can be submitted in one of three categories: Environmental, Action, and Character. Also, show us what you've got in the comments, while you're at it.

A separate European contest will happen in the coming weeks.

News::Does Every Survival Game Need an Enemy?

Aidan discusses survival games like The Forest and Rust. Is the simulation enough or does there need to be antagonists? "Survival games often drop players somewhere in the wilderness, and the majority of natures sudden dangers are animals. Wolves, bears, snakes, for example. Perhaps the antagonists dont have to be zombies or cannibals but when a game includes animal attacks, conceptually they are all the same."

News::Amazing Princess Sarah Review | Twinfinite

James of Twinfinite writes "Over the past couple of decades 2D platformers have become the favourite genre of both developers and gamers. Bouncing from precarious ledge to precarious ledge has become almost genetic in the evolution of any gamers taste. For some, bounding through the Mushroom Kingdom is their first memory of gaming. Some owe their love of 2D platforming to Super Meat Boy or Thomas Was Alone. Everyone in between has that first 2D platformer that nestles within their hearts. If anyones first memory of a two-dimensional platformer ends up being Amazing Princess Sarah though, gaming will definitely lose a fan."

News::These Persona 4 Arena clothing items are expensive and not that cool-looking

Harajuku's LHP fashion shop is displaying a line of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax -themed apparel and accessories, and it's all extremely expensive (6,000 yen/$58.50 for a t-shirt) and pretty ugly at that.

Dengeki brings us a cavalcade of photos of the storefront and the massive Persona promotion, which also features hoodies for 8,800 yen ($85.81) and bags that retail for about the same price, with the smaller ones going for 6,800 yen ($66.32).

The graphics on the t-shirts and hoodies, unimpressively, look as though someone took an iron-on transfer and plastered it on the front and back of the clothing. So really, what I'm interested in are the monochromatic Teddie plushes, which sell for 4,800 yen ($46.80). There's a ton of other merchandise as well, ranging from watches to iPhone cases to mugs. But for the most part, it's not a very exciting design.

What do you think? Would you plunk down the cash for these products?

That's why I'm so tickled about this latest batch, but honestly I'm about ready for the game, which can't come quickly enough. What's up with that Robin Hood-looking outfit? Is that a hair bikini? News::VR Platform Title Upwards Gets Pre-Release Version

VRFocus - The Oculus VR Share beta serves as a portal to a range of free virtual reality (VR) compatible experiences. These demos are usually short pieces that lack much in the way of detail. That's not the case with Upwards, one of the more recent additions to the platform that can currently be downloaded for free. The title, which is available on both PC and Mac, supports the first development kit (DK1) version of the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD).

I stopped tallying at ten counts of the word "iteration" in the early goings of the SOE Live 2014 presentation for SOE's upcoming (PC, PS4) survival zombie sim H1Z1. Okay. I get it. That's why the game wasn't so hot when it was first shown off and why there's still work to do before it comes to Steam Early Access "soon."

Ooh boy. This trailer for Crytek's "action-packed online multiplayer game" Arena of Fate sure is something. First impressions are important and that grating narration doesn't leave a good one.

Looking on the bright side, I will say I dig the premise of famous historical and fictitious characters fighting each other. But unfortunately for Arena of Fate, it's going to take much more than that to have a real impact in the crowded MOBA scene. Talk about an uphill battle.

News::10 Perfectly Crafted Video Games That Never Need Sequels

Some games are simply built with multiple entries in mind, whether its the yearly onslaught of Call of Duty and Assassins Creed titles or games that are tied to the creative vision of their director over a period of several years. Over-saturation is a real problem in the video game industry, as the countless recycling of old properties on a yearly basis only serves to diminish the quality over time. Indeed, the first game in the Thief series is a moody, calculating experience that seems to be slowly diluted with each subsequent release. The creative fire seems to fizzle out with each new game in a successful series, running the severe risk of franchise burn out. It is infinitely better to give the first game a satisfying conclusion than continue to warp the ideals of the series over time. To that end, there are certain games that produced a title that was so contained within itself and executed in such a precise manner, that a sequel often seems like a cash grab. Be honest w...

News::BioWare to Keep Making Gay Characters, Whether People Like it Or Not

J Station X writes "According to the statistics, less than 1% of all games released in 2013 let us play as a gay (or LGBTQ) character and the crux of that is because although the majority of gamers are a fairly progressive lot and wouldnt mind gay characters right in there with the rest of the heterosexual ones, plenty of publishers and developers are guilty of shying away from the subject in fear of the vocal, ignorant minority coming for them with pitchforks and torches aflame. Developer BioWare are actually one of the few developers to embrace queer characters wholeheartedly, with all three Mass Effect games and both Dragon Age 1 and 2 allowing same-sex romances. Dragon Age: Inquisition is set to include same-sex romance too and, BioWare say, they have plans to keep putting gay characters in their games in the future."

News::Overruled! Review - Blistering Brawler Bonanza | Twinfinite

Chaz at Twinfinite writes, I dont think Im alone when I say theres a special spot in my heart for brawler games. The clear champion Super Smash Bros. series is, of course, the cream of the crop, but Im one of the (apparently few) who also purchased and enjoyed PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. So when it came time to review Overruled!, a zany over-the-top multiplayer brawler, I knew I was likely in for a treat. While I had a tough time getting lobbies together for matches (for which I blame the games early access status), the games I was able to play were a blast, and I could see this one sliding into a nice spot as a tidy contender for go-to party game.
