News::Activision on games like 'Call of Duty': 'People appreciate our approach'

This week has already seen the release of Assassin's Creed IV, and the yearly sports titles have been making the rounds over the last couple of months. Examiner recently spoke with Activision's Eric Hirshberg, whose company is just about to release the next annual entry in their Call of Duty franchise, and asked whether he thought yearly titles were underappreciated.

News::Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z releasing March 2014

In North America, Team Ninja's Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be hitting PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on March 4, 2014. There's a new trailer for the game which features Miss Monday, Yaiba's "in-game tour guide." You'd ... you'd better just watch it for yourself.

I probably should be in the market for this, as a fan of Ninja Gaiden, cyborgs, ninjas, and especially cyborg ninjas. For whatever reason, it hasn't been on my radar ever since the initial reveal. Maybe it's the game's juvenile tone? Yeah. Fairly sure that's not helping.

AWESOMEoutof10's David Chandler knows that The Stanley Parable is a game like no other, so he gave it a review like no other. "The truth, the reader discovered, is that The Stanley Parable warrants anyones consideration. It was truly that simple. Since, however, the reader felt compelled to read on, the narrator felt obliged to elaborate, which suits the subject at hand. After all, isnt compulsion the reason we play games in the first place? News::Xbox One game gifting may be coming after all

Back when the Xbox One was announced and all of that terrible DRM news came out of it, there was one pretty neat feature -- digital game gifting. Essentially, the practice allowed you to buy a game digitally, play it, then "gift it" to a friend on your Xbox Live friend's list.

It's something not even Steam allows, and I would have loved to have seen it on a console for the very first time. But after Microsoft pulled an Xbox 180 on their DRM policies, the idea was abandoned -- most would say that the good (the support of used games and the removal of always-on DRM)) far outweighed the bad, and they'd be absolutely correct.

But there may be light at the end of the sharing tunnel, as Major Nelson confirms that it's a "Great feature we'd like to add in someday, but it won't be there at launch." It's not concrete confirmation, but if enough fans rise to the occasion, it's possible Microsoft could support it in the future.

News::Gas Guzzlers Extreme Review | Geekenstein

"The other sticking point might be the price. Gas Guzzlers Extreme will cost those in the USA $25, which is a step above the accepted price for downloadable games of this nature. However, Id argue that Gas Guzzlers is a step above the standard downloadable fare. There has been much ado lately about the death of the B-Tier game, especially with the closings of Midway and THQ. However, Gas Guzzlers is firmly placed in this category. The game sets its goals and then firmly accomplishes them without going above and beyond, which is especially easy to do considering how few Car Combat games get made in 2013. Its not going to hit anyones Top 10 list, but Gas Guzzlers is a fun, easy to play experience that is easily recommendable to anyone who misses the glory days of the genre." - Alex Santa Maria of Geekenstein

News::Call of Duty: Ghosts is upscaled at 720p on the Xbox One

A lot of rumors have been flying around in regards to the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts , and Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin has addressed them once and for all. For starters, Ghosts runs at 1080p on the PlayStation 4, and is upscaled at 720p on the Xbox One. Both versions are 60 fps.

Rubin is also happy about the reception with the game's alien-centric Extinction mode, so I hope it lives up to the hype. It'll be really interesting to see how Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 fare on PC versus the Xbox One and PS4, and how it changes the attitudes of major FPS developers going forward.

News::Watch eight minutes of Call of Duty's alien horde mode

GameSpot has a quick look of Call of Duty: Ghosts' new Extinction mode, which seems to be Infinity Ward's take on Treyarch's zombies -- with aliens in it. But if you take a closer look at Extinction, it looks like there's a decent amount of variety within the mode to differentiate itself, with a full leveling system, classes, and an enhanced emphasis on co-op.

According to the developers, there's a focus on "base defense with wave based gameplay, and scavenging and leveling." Extinction encourages scavenging to find special items like flares (which distract enemies), hypno-knives (to convert enemies to your cause), and other items like electric fences.

All in all, it sounds pretty appealing, and I'm more than willing to give it a shot. I really like the part where the developers talk about breaking away from the Modern Warfare universe as much as possible to try something new -- we'll see how true that really is next week!

In Sakurai's "Pic of the Day" post in the Smash Bros . Miiverse section, he recently revealed a brand new addition to the pair of games -- a Male Wii Fit Trainer. News::EA financial figures show abysmal Wii U software sales

For quite a while now, some people have been knocking EA for not supporting the Wii U -- and with some new information, it's not hard to see why. Currently out of all of the total software sales in the last quarter ($695 million), only three percent are from the Wii and the Wii U.

Conversely, the Xbox 360 comprises 54% of sales, whereas the PS3 is sitting at 42%. Of course, this presents a "chicken and egg" scenario where both EA and Nintendo potentially lose. On one hand, the Wii U needs support to succeed, and releasing a scant few games this year on the Wii U and Wii will of course equate to low sales.

On the other, EA has an obligation to stay in business, and spending tons of cash on the development of something responsible for 3% of your profits doesn't make much sense. It'll be interesting to see where the Wii U is at after the holidays. Hopefully EA wises up and legitimately considers an exclusive with some effort put into it before ignoring the Wii U for good.

News::ZTGD | Batman: Arkham Origins Review

Ken McKown writes: The Arkham series has become the gold standard for licensed titles, and comic book games in general. It has also become one of my favorite new series from this current generation of consoles. The third and likely final chapter on this current generation is more of the same I have come to know and love, with a few minor setbacks that keep it from reaching the same fondness of the originals. Part of that is likely due to the fact that a new developer has taken over the reigns, or perhaps more due to the idea that this series hasnt really progressed much since it was conceived. Still, for those that enjoy the Arkham franchise, this is yet another great entry in the Batman lore.

News::Ed Boon teases Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks HD

Once upon a time, Midway Games made a Mortal Kombat themed beat 'em up called Shaolin Monks. It starred Liu Kang and Kung Lao in an epic quest to defeat Shang Tsung, featuring full co-op, RPG elements, and a story. Surprisingly, it did rather well both commercially and critically, which might be why Ed Boon is teasing an HD version of Shaolin Monks over Twitter.

Jokingly, Boon tweeted a picture of a Shaolin Monks strategy guide, stating "Someone put this on my desk. WTF? Do they think we're doing an HD version to download ... um.. or something." I don't think I'm alone in saying I would easily buy a $10 downloadable version for the co-op factor alone -- and with a number of Mortal Kombat games coming to Steam recently, a PC release could sell very well.

I for one love these MK spinoffs, and as wonky as it was, I was also a fan of Mortal Kombat: Mythologies Sub Zero -- there's something about that game that drew me in over the course of an entire week.
