News::Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare Could Be An Upward Boost To The Series | EGMR

EGMR writes: "Call of Duty is a series that people familiar with the industry generally need very little introduction to; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, however, is the latest, and maybe freshest cog in the series for a long while."

News::Dragon Age: Origins is free on Origin until Tuesday

Many of you haven't seemed too thrilled with EA's free game offerings on Origin, which is understandable -- they've been hit or miss. This one should prove a bit more compelling.

The standard edition of Dragon Age: Origins is free to download on Origin now through Tuesday, October 14. To be clear, if you download the title in that time, it's yours to keep and play as you like. (Some of EA's other promotions don't function this way.)

Yeah, the promo is clearly timed as a lead-in to Dragon Age: Inquisition's impending release, but that's fine. Just glad it's the original we're getting here instead of the sequel.

News::These free Octodad: Dadliest Catch levels are going to end in disaster

Feeding watermelon to a hospital patient? What a nice guy, that Octodad. Such large, sharp forks he's got, too. It's a good thing he is an adult human with fully developed motor skills.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch was a treat, but I was left wanting more. Thankfully, more is coming, and it'll be here real soon. The adventures of our favorite secret octopus father continue with two new levels, Dad Romance and Medical Mess, releasing Tuesday for free on PS4, PC, Mac, and Linux.

What's more, Dadliest Catch will be half off next week on PlayStation Network, Steam, and the Humble Store. That brings the game down to $7.50. Pretty good.

Take a Look at the First New Star Wars Arcade Game in Years

The best part of the Star Wars arcade games of yore was how they transported you into the movies, letting you be the one destroying the Death Star and defeating the Empire. A new bunch of Star Wars machines are going to do the same thing for today's audiences, starting next January.

News::Crave Online: NBA 2K15 Review

"Unfortunately, despite having high hopes for MyTeam mode due to its certifiably epic teaser trailer, I found it to be the least interesting of all that I tried. Card-powered mechanics return, and though real-time buying and selling is a nice touch, it doesnt go far in terms of making the core gameplay of this mode truly great. The same can be said of MyGM, which feels a bit under realized here, and despite both modes allowing for the use of real money to speed things along, I was never engaged enough to actually entertain the idea. Thankfully, the pros do outweigh the cons this year, and just like last year, 2K is going to be a tough package to beat. Defensive quirks and a few underdeveloped modes aside, MyCareer is a serious time sink that will net your hours of enjoyment, while the changes made to offensive play (and the resulting silky-smooth authenticity) are on the bleeding edge of where basketball video games ought to be going."

News::Why Are Final Boss Fights So Terrible?

EGMR writes: "Its often a flaw of us humans that we see the past better than it actually was and the present worse than it honestly is. However if theres one thing in our games that I feel is an exception to that, it would have to be boss fights. I can say that because my favourite game of all time is the Metal Gear Solid series, which contained some of the greatest boss fights ever to be put in games. However over the course of the last generation boss fights more and more seemed to be fizzling out of games, and today its pretty much safe to say that boss fights as we know them by tradition arent really a thing anymore. Sure we had Devil May Cry 4 and God of War III and some little rays of sunshine here and there with things like the Mr Freeze fight in Batman: Arkham City and DmC: Devil May Crys attempts at doing stuff, but largely boss fights have taken a back seat to new trends like cinematic set pieces and the like. And its absolutely not something I feel is a good thing f...

News::Geekscape Games Reviews: 'Styx: Master of Shadows'

Andy writes - "Video games that incorporate stealth as the core mechanic usually fall into one of two camps. Either you will fail for alerting someone immediately or the option to fight off enemies with ease makes stealth out of place. A few games can find the right balance between the two extremes. Styx: Master of Shadows tends to teeter in finding its balance but never falls over.

News::5 Open-World Franchises That Should Steal Shadow Of Mordor's Nemesis System

GI: Open-world games are more popular than ever, and while we're still seeing some of the best the genre has to offer, there's always room for improvement. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor may not be the largest sandbox around, but it makes up for it in spades with the intriguing nemesis system. This feature procedurally generates powerful Uruk captains with distinct names, appearances, and attributes. Players can kill these named bad guys for powerful upgrades, or accidentally earn them promotions by dying by their hand. The nemesis system has inspired us, and we've already started thinking about other open-world series that would be even more fun with something similar.

News::Minimum - PC Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes: Indie game development can be a lot like a stew, designers throwing genre tropes into a pot to see what tasty treat they can concoct. Sometimes the flavors dont work right, and what comes out is an unpalatable mess. Other times, ingredients not thought of as complementary can come together in a way where they can mask each others shortcomings, and create a simple and satisfying result. Minimum, from developer Human Head Studios, is a team based third-person shooter that borrows a variety of elements from wildly different games and packs them all into a fast paced package. But is it too soon to ring the dinner bell?

News::Destructoid: Costume Quest 2 Review

"Despite its limits, Costume Quest 2 is a fun little treat, one that doesn't last too long but perhaps that's for the best. Double Fine has done a decent job overhauling the combat system but while there's a more robust set of mechanics than the first game, they do wear thin towards the end. Costume Quest 2 still has that Double Fine charm and any game that includes a Blazing Saddles joke in 2014 is okay in my book."
