News:: Deals: 57% off Final Fantasy XIV, $19 Rainbow Six Siege

Nothing to do this weekend? We've got your ass covered. At GMG, they are running multiple franchise sales this weekend and while we'll usually wait to mention these in our weekend roundup, some are good enough that we figured we'll do the work now rather than later (yay for productivity).

Well over a hundred titles are discounted, all in summer sale price ranges. Some are new lows like Far Cry 3 and Child of Light, while others are rare discounts like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege or the entire Final Fantasy XIV catalog.

News:: This PSN Flash Sale is a bunch of games below $10

This weekend's US PlayStation Network Flash Sale is a lot to sift through. As is usually the case though, if you go down the line, you'll probably spot an item or two that would slot nicely into your backlog.

An easy standout for me is Downwell, which I've already played some on PC but not mastered by any means. It'd be nice to have on a console as something I could switch to on a whim while I'm already situated on the couch, beer in reach. Also, it's $1.99 and Cross-Buy on Vita. Done and done.

If you spot anything particularly worth repping, share your recommendations in the comments.

News:: Don't rule out original Xbox games becoming backward compatible

It's safe to say that backward compatibility has been a big hit for Microsoft and the Xbox One. Usage statistics haven't been released (and if I had to guess, I'd wager that they're fairly low) but it's an important bullet point nevertheless. On Xbox One, you can play a lot of your games that you own on Xbox 360. That's a claim that the competitors can't make about their platforms.

But, the backward compatibility may not stop at the last generation. Xbox head Phil Spencer recently responded to a question on Twitter about the possibility of original Xbox games still making their way to Xbox One. "We haven't ruled it out, but we aren't working on it right now. I'd like to find the time to do it," he said.

It's not exactly the kind of answer that inspires confidence but it also means it's still on the table. This isn't the first time Spencer addressed this question. More than a year ago, he gave a similar response but put more emphasis on building out the Xbox 360's catalog.

Things don't seem as if they've changed much in the past year in this regard. Spencer and Xbox would still like to introduce those original Xbox games to the newest console. But, it's not a priority either. It'd be a nice touch for those who have been long-committed to the Xbox brand, but it's certainly more important that the company focuses the bulk of its attention forward instead of backward. Especially now that it already has that aforesaid bullet point working to its advantage.

News:: Xbox Elite controller opens up games to people with disabilities

AbleGamers program director Craig Kaufman knows he's done his job when a kid comes running up to him on a busy convention show floor and screams, "I can stab people now!"

"And I'm like, you shouldn't yell that in public -- but it's exciting," Kaufman says. "All the kid wanted to do was stab people and we helped him."

Kaufman is talking about stabbing people in Call of Duty, not real life. AbleGamers' core mission is to open up gaming to people with disabilities, which often means giving away specialized controllers that respond to breathing, can be mounted on wheelchairs, or offer single-click solutions for more complicated actions like using analog sticks. However, AbleGamers is always looking for simpler and more accessible options, and this year they found one: The $150 Xbox Elite controller.

News:: A patch scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, will raise the light level in Destiny to 400 and improve

A patch scheduled for Tuesday, October 18, will raise the light level in Destiny to 400 and improve the light levels of loot offered in the game, hopefully making players’ rise to 370 to access Rise of Iron’s raid less of, in our reviewer’s word, a “slog.” Good news, given that the raid sounded cool.

News:: The best Binding of Isaac players get an unrelated game for free

Usually cross-game promotions are confined to one developer or publisher's catalog and are meant as a way to boost sales for whatever the new game is. A good and recent example is Microsoft offering all the Gears of War games to anyone who buys Gears of War 4. Realistically, those older titles won't sell a lot of copies anymore, but it might be enough incentive to get a substantial number of people to pick up the new title. Microsoft's surely operating at a net positive with that promotion.

However, one indie developer is inverting and subverting this model. Amplify Games is giving away its new game Polygod to anyone who has one of several achievements in The Binding of Isaac, a game that it is in no way affiliated with (although, it does share its roguelike roots).

Studio co-founder Dominic Obojkovits explained it by saying "I really loved The Binding of Isaac and I think Polygod will resonate well with players that also really enjoyed The Binding of Isaac. Because of this, I want to reward the most dedicated players with a copy of Polygod."

As Obojkovits said, only dedicated players will fulfill the criteria to get a free copy of Polygod. Of the achievements Amplify chose, less than five percent of players have unlocked the most common one. Here's the full list of achievements that could net you a free game:

News:: This glitch makes all of ReCore's toughest challenges simple, and it requires visiting a dungeon that's not even supposed to be there

ReCore's optional dungeons are the purest parts of the game. They're self-contained challenges that put an emphasis on platforming, combat, or exploration. These are the three core tenets of the whole game, but these dungeons' lean nature means that they skirt a lot of the problems that plague the rest of it. At least, they do when you mentally isolate them from the rest of ReCore.

What's so insidious about the dungeons is that they're fairly easy to beat outright. But, every one of them comes with a set of extra constraints that can make it more challenging: Shoot eight switches, find the hidden key, and beat the time limit. On their own, none of these are an especially tough task.

However, to truly best the dungeon and earn all the rewards, players need to complete all three on a single run. This can prove to be exceptionally difficult at times. The switches and the key are easy enough, but the time limit makes those two incredibly inconvenient when you're trying to go as quickly as possible.

ReCore has a glitch that renders the time constraint null, effectively removing all of the stress that comes with trying to perfect these dungeons. Sure, it's antithetical to what the game stands for. But, the way it works is so emblematic of how sloppy ReCore can be sometimes. The way it's activated is by visiting a dungeon that's not even supposed to be in the game.

News:: 20 Essential Horror Films Directed by Women

Female characters are prominent in scary movies, and not always as helpless victims. Think about the Final Girl, without whom slasher films would not exist, or other kick-ass heroines, like Alien’s Ripley. Behind the camera, though, you’ll find way more male writers and directors—which is why these horror movies directed by women are worthy of extra celebration.

News:: Oh hey, Resident Evil 7 has item boxes!

Whether fans want Resident Evil 7 to be more in line with the earlier games or embrace change, everyone should find comfort in this pair of teaser videos from Capcom. Well, not the first one. It has a loud phone ringing (multiple phones, even!) and nothing good ever comes of that in a horror setting. "You really shouldn't have come here," says a mysterious stranger, just as the clip comes to end.

But the second video? Oh yes. There's a short but reassuring look at an item box (a series staple I'm glad to see return), as well as a pump-action shotgun that'll work wonders against some horrible thing.

News:: Did you buy a PlayStation VR?

Well, it's out!

Yesterday, the PlayStation VR officially launched, and we're already planning a ton of coverage for it -- by the time we're done, you'll have a clear picture of whether or not it's worth your time and money.

But there's already a lot of information out there, and over a year's worth of hands-on writeups to peruse. Naturally, some of you have made the decision to buy in, or have sworn off VR entirely. There's also a bunch of militant people out there who think VR is the future, and won't accept any other viewpoint.

If it wasn't my job to cover these kind of things I still would have given the PSVR a go. There's several exclusives for it that I want, and like any platform launch, there's only going to be a few strong showings. For me, Rez is basically enough. Like I told another Dtoider, it's kind of like buying into the original Steel Battalion Xbox controller (which was $200 at the time).

Risky? Sure. But sometimes new tech can be fun. My wife on the other hand isn't really buying what VR is selling in general, and finds it disorienting and too solitary of an experience, on top of the fact that there aren't really that many "must haves" available. I'd agree with a lot of that. With all of the wildly different takes out there, I want to hear what you think now that the "big three" (Vive, Rift, PSVR) are out.

News:: Rumor: The next Call of Duty will be set in Vietnam

Still three weeks away from the release of Infinite Warfare, there is already scuttlebutt about the next rooty tooty point and shooty on deck. Next in line in the three year cycle Activision has going is Sledgehammer, who last developed Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Prior to the release of Advanced Warfare, Sledgehammer was planning to create a third-person Call of Duty title called Fog of War or Vietnam that was to be set in Laos and Cambodia where the Vietnam War spread into. That was canceled, but rumors rooting from IGN Spain have suggested they are going to make the next game in Vietnam.

News:: 'Friday the 13th' game delayed to 2017

Friday the 13th: The Game will miss its 2016 release window, and is now scheduled for early 2017. The developer of the crowdfunded title announced the delay to Kickstarter backers, but softened the blow with some added features. A "single-player experience" -- originally a missed stretch goal -- is being worked on, along with AI bots for offline multiplayer. Prior to the recent announcement, Friday the 13th was set to be a online-only affair, and that mode will still be the main focus of the game.

News:: Another day, another Pokemon Sun & Moon trailer

How much is too much when it comes to revealing information about a game players will have no issue putting well over 100 hours into? I ask myself that everytime The Pokemon Company releases a new trailer for Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon because there doesn't seem to be an end in sight to what they'll reveal, potentially ruining some of the surprises some players would like to experience for themselves when they actually play through the game. I mean it's not like a Pokemon game needs this many trailers to sell.

Anyway, in today's trailer, we're given a look at some of the evolutions for new Pokemon as well as the Alola forms of Muk and Grimer. I'm not the biggest fan of these evolutions, but I can see the internet applying Rule 34 to Tsareena by the end of the week. By the way, while it isn't said in this video, it was confirmed over the weekend that 3D will only be available for the Poke Finder, aka the Pokemon Snap-like camera mode.

News:: There's a bunch of Xbox and PlayStation bundle deals pre-Black Friday

We are nearing the middle of October but for those of you who absolutely can't wait until the holiday season to pick up an eighth-gen console, you're in luck. Retailers want to move inventory as fast as possible vs. being forced to bundle away the rest of the store during Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

With some big titles appearing before the holidays such as Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, retailers such as GameStop and Best Buy are expecting gamers on the sideline to make the jump. For example, at GameStop this week any purchase of an Xbox One S or non-S bundle (even the upcoming Battlefield 1 bundle) will receive a free physical copy of Fallout 4

For the PlayStation 4, while only five bundle deals are available compared to the Xbox's thirteen, you can still pick up the latest PlayStation 4 Slim with either a free copy of Grand Theft Auto V or Overwatch and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Personally we'll go with the latter bundle for $309.99 which seems like the best value as of writing.

News:: VR FPS Arktika.1 isn't 'holding up' Metro 2033 maker's other project

The next project from the studio behind the frigid, monster-filled Metro series of first-person shooters is essentially more of that, but by a different name, and built only with virtual reality mind.

"Nearly a century in the future, the world has fallen into a new ice age in the aftermath of a silent apocalypse," reads the summary. "Only the equatorial regions are still habitable, yet pockets of humanity survive in small numbers all over the planet, hanging onto existence in the resource-rich territories to the north and south--resources that everyone wants to control... Protect the colony in the wastelands of old Russia from raiders, marauders, and strange creatures."

Last week, 4A Games announced its 2017 Oculus Touch game Arktika.1. This week, the developer is reaching out to fans who aren't exactly thrilled that the title's exclusivity means they'll miss out. It's a situation that we, aside from the lucky few who can just buy it all, will increasingly find ourselves in.
