News::Hardline 34: Creepy games and crappy people

Happy (early) Halloween! For this week's Hardline, Bill, Brett, and I reminisced about unintentionally scary games that bothered us as kids while Steven was off on the other side of the world throwing bread down a hole. Hope you like your podcasts full of tangents.

News::Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition Review (Invision Game Community)

Icewind Dale is an RPG which follows the rules of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) laid out by Dave Arneson & Gary Gygax (R.I.P.) and published through TSR in the 70s & 80s. AD&D is a table top RPG which relies heavily on the imagination of the Dungeon Master (DM) and players to fill in the gaps missing from what is essentially a living story which is written on the fly by everyone concerned.

News::Lets Play Evolve Big Alpha Hank Support Class Gameplay

EB's Matt Heywood writes, "In our first Lets Play for the Evolve Big Alpha I played the role of the Goliath monster, and almost squeaked out a victory, but I got cocky and the human ended up taking me out. In this Lets Play I take on the role of Hank, who specializes in support class abilities. The match was super quick because the person controlling the monster didnt really know what to do, but you still get to see how deadly the humans can be if they work together against an overzealous monster."

News::Target is holding a 'buy two, get one free' game sale the week of Nov. 9

There's going to be some good deals next month and you won't even have to wait for Black Friday. According to a weekly Target ad that has surfaced online, the retailer will have a buy-two, get-one-free offer on "all video games, all platforms, all week" beginning November 9.

It's that busy time of the year for new game releases so, yeah, nice timing. Similarly, Best Buy is offering a buy-one, get-one-half-off sale on all 3DS games during the week of November 9.

The obligatory November discounts will lead me to spend too much on console games and then I'll make the same mistake again come the holiday Steam sale. That's just the way it is.

EB's Matt Heywood writes, "This particular video showcases a match where I played the Goliath monster against four other humans. Joe Lewis of The Koalition writes: Raising the stakes and creating a new and more cautious form of gameplay, its easy to see why the permadeath run is gaining traction among the hardcore. Like a crack addict looking for a new kind of high, its not hard to see how Chris Livingstons devised perma-permadeath is destined to up the ante yet again. For those who dont know, permadeath is a way to play games with an added restriction: If your avatar dies, in combat or otherwise, then thats all she wrote. No respawning and no reverting to a previous save.

My Quest To Seduce The Grim Reaper In The Sims 4

News::Contest: Show us your Halloween costumes and win Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!

Do you like dressing up for Halloween? I sure do! In fact, just a few years ago I went as Princess Peach. I was SO beautiful. (You can see the sexy evidence above. And that's my wife playing Rock Band in the background. She was dressed as Mr Andy Dixon.)

Anyway, if you're like me, half the fun of dressing up is showing off your costumes, and the other half is winning a free game for doing so! (The third half is scaring children. The fourth half is stealing their candy as they run away.) Well it just so happens that your beloved Robot Overlord found an extra copy of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel hidden in his robo-shoe, and he's decided to hand it out at random to someone who posts a picture of themselves in their costume in the comments below!

Limit one entry per person, and you have until this Friday at 11:59pm Pacific to show us your stuff. All costumes are valid (meaning not just videogame-related ones), so don't feel discouraged even if you're going as Elsa from Frozen like every other f*cking little girl in the world this year. Winner will be chosen at random, but you must hold up a sign that says "DESTRUCTOID" in the picture so we know it's really you. International readers are welcome to enter, though we may ask you to pay for shipping if you win.

Double points if you dress up as Claptrap using only items you found around your house.

Good luck, and have fun!

I would apologize for the spoiler in the headline, but come on. We all know what was going to happen. It takes tons of practice to work up to Mike Tyson in Punch-Out!!, so of course the real Mike Tyson is not going to stand a chance when put up against his digital counterpart.

I cannot help but envy Jimmy Fallon a bit when segments like these come out. He got to play Goldeneye007 with Pierce Brosnan, and now he gets to play coach here. He's like a 40-year-old child, fulfilling his teenage fantasies with the Tonight Show. I mean that in the nicest way possible.

News::Driveclub PS Plus Edition delayed until Evolution fixes the full game

Evolution Studios' long-delayed Driveclub released on October 7 but its saga is far from over -- the game still has online issues, and the slice of game for PlayStation Plus subscribers isn't out yet.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida issued an update on the game's Facebook page. "We have been listening to your feedback and realize that patience understandably is running out," he said. "Evo is working around the clock to close the gap, and we have deployed additional engineering resources to help resolve the remaining issues as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the time frames required to roll out the fully connected experience will be longer than anticipated and we do not have an exact time frame for when they will be resolved."

Until that mess is cleaned up, there will be no Driveclub PS Plus Edition. "With the high volume of new players and additional server load the PS Plus Edition is anticipated to bring, we are currently not confident that we can guarantee the best online experience," said Yoshida.

"Until we can ensure that everyone can enjoy the full social connected online experience, we will be postponing the release of the PS Plus Edition until further notice."

This trailer for Sportsball -- not to be confused with Action Button Entertainment's Videoball ; the narrator's delivery reminded me of Tim Rogers, a bit -- is something else. I feel like I need to watch it about four more times to begin to comprehend it. Jock and yolk? Jock and yolk.

We've technically covered the game before, but only barely. It was featured as one of Nintendo's "Nindies" (lol) for IndieCade and Holmes called it "Joust but with balls," once.

If that sounds worth playing, you'll be able to soon enough. Sportsball hits the Wii U eShop on Thursday, November 6, priced at $9.99. For more, check out the game's official site.

News::October's Games with Gold are among my favorites

Two of my favorite Xbox 360 games will be free next month for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise is up first on Saturday, November 1. You'll have through November 15 to download the adorable, kind of messed-up, addictive gardening game and then you can join the rest of us in wishing Rare would make another one. Oh, Rare.

Red Faction: Guerrilla will be available next, from November 16 - 30. It's got some of the best destructible environments in any videogame. You can smash apart buildings bit by bit with your sledgehammer -- or a mech, or black-hole bombs -- and they'll come crashing down. So fun.

Finally, there's Volgarr the Viking, which will debut on Xbox One as a month-long freebie for Gold members. Fans of Rastan and hard-ass games in general will want to download this.
