News::Watch Dogs Hacks Everything | The Escapist

The Escapist: "Complexity in gameplay is something that we don't see every day. There are so many twitch shooters and button mashing adventures, there's just not much room for games with involved and thoughtful mechanics. Watch Dogs is looking to change this, and the hype is doing justice to the fact that gamers occasionally want to do something more with their experience."

News::Thief E3 Preview - PSLS

With the number of games out there that have focused on killing everything in sight, the notion for a developer to design a game that focuses on doing the exact opposite would seem unlikely. Luckily, Eidos Montreal has decided to bring back a franchise that not only focuses on staying in the shadows, but also one that very few console gamers have ever heard of. Thief, last seen in 2004 on the PC and Xbox, was finally shown getting a next-gen reboot at E3 2013 here is what we thought.

News::Deep Down a ways away, not related to Dragon's Dogma

During Sony's PlayStation 4 reveal event, Capcom showed off Deep Down , a game slated for PS4 and running on Capcom's next-gen engine, codenamed "Panta Rhei." The game looks positively medieval, not too dissimilar from Capcom property Dragon's Dogma. There are even dragons. Still, on the Capcom forum, senior VP Christian Svensson put the kibosh on any notions of relation between the two games: "For reference [Dead Rising 3] and Deep Down have nothing to do with Dragon's Dogma."

Meanwhile, the Dragon's Dogma franchise, post Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen , is presently persisting as a free-to-play Vita exclusive, Dragon's Dogma Quest . Capcom is adamant about turning the series into one of its flagship franchises. Maybe Deep Down is something like a spiritual forebearer to Dragon's Dogma, allowing Capcom to test the next-gen waters and its new engine with a fresh IP before going all in with another Dragon's Dogma?

On the topic of Deep Down, Svensson noted, "It’s still quite far off. Ono-san tweeted we’d have it at E3 next year." Could Capcom up and run both games simultaneously despite perceived overlap? Or does having Deep Down at E3 next year back up the notion of it coming out first while Dragon's Dogma gets a new game announced at the conference?

Incredipede , a "game about life and feet," is on sale for $4.99 on Steam for PC and Mac. If you are a lucky Linux user, you can download it for free. The game was successfully added to Steam via Greenlight earlier this year, and it looks like a lot of fun to play.

This bundle includes Really Big Sky, Runespell Overture, Eufloria , Cthulhu Saves the World , and Breath of Death VII. These are all excellent games, and I highly recommend Cthulhu to everyone.

You can grab this bundle for a current minimum price of $4.40, and if you pay at least $7 you'll get a bonus music album, Rise of the Obsidian Interstellar by Disasterpeace.

News::I met Keiji Inafune! We discussed Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z!

Guys. I met Keiji Inafune at E3. I interviewed Keiji Inafune at E3.

I've achieved everything I've wanted to accomplish in my relatively short career as a games journalist. There is literally nothing else for me to do except pack my things and move on. I'm kidding, of course, but I'm not joking about how big a dream come true this was.

My meeting with Inafune was a complete surprise. Each of the Destructoid writers had been handed a list of appointments, and I saw Tecmo Koei on my schedule. I rightly assumed it was to discuss Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, but I had no idea whether I'd be speaking directly with someone from the dev team or not.

If I had known Keiji Inafune, the man whose work has had such a profound impact on hobby and my life, would be standing behind that door, I would have come prepared with a better list of questions. Nonetheless, I stepped in the room, put on my most professional face, and did my absolute best not to squeal like a schoolgirl.

News::EA Sports' next-gen engine doesn't support PC, Wii U

EA Sports Ignite, the engine slated to handle PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sports games from EA like NBA Live 14 , EA Sports UFC , Madden 25, and FIFA 14 , presently doesn't support the PC or Wii U. FIFA is the only notable sports release EA bothers to put on PC, and according to Polygon, FIFA 14 on PC will not use the Ignite engine. Speaking to the outlet, EA Sports head Andrew Wilson offered some explanation.

On the topic of FIFA 11 finally bringing PC and console parity to the franchise, Wilson said, "Even though there were some PCs on the marketplace that could run that engine, the lion's share of PCs on the marketplace could not," noting that by 2010, the target audience of FIFA players with PCs finally had, on average, machines powerful enough to handle EA's engine. The situation seems to have repeated itself. Wilson says it's possible for Ignite to eventually make its way to PC, but, "[f]irst, the average hardware specifications of PCs -- not just PCs in general, but the PCs of those who would buy FIFA on that platform -- need to catch up."

I suppose it makes sense. The Ignite engine was designed for consoles, where EA Sports plies most of its wares. Given how many people buy FIFA each year, it makes sense to assume the average player doesn't have a beefy PC. Still, is EA shortchanging itself not having most of its sports franchises on PC? What about not having technical parity between the PC and console releases of one of its best-selling franchises?

"The Yawhg will be here in six weeks.... and no one expects it."

An air of nervousness hangs over the town; there is much to be done but so little time. What is The Yawhg, can it be stopped, and what will be left if it wreaks its anger on the town?

What The Yawhg actually is has little bearing in the story. Picking a pair of characters, you have six weeks to ready yourself and carve out your own story. What seems like a slight experience at first glance reveals a surprising amount of depth on repeat playthroughs.

News::3DS gets backup save feature, more StreetPass games

In addition to a feature allowing users to back up their save data for downloadable 3DS games and most Virtual Console titles, Nintendo's newest 3DS firmware update has added premium StreetPass games. Look for all four of them available for purchase in the Mii Plaza as the update rolls out to different regions.

There's StreetPass Squad, a shmup from Good-Feel (Kirby's Epic Yarn ); Ocarina of Time 3D developer Grezzo's StreetPass Garden; strategy title StreetPass Battle from Spike Chunsoft (Virtue's Last Reward ); and Let's Tap studio Prope's haunted-house mystery StreetPass Mansion.

Shame Nintendo couldn't get this update pushed out before E3, as the expo was seemingly one giant excuse to get everyone to StreetPass one another.

Eventually, the Humble Bundle team is going to run out of games to feature. Eventually, I will stop giving it all of my money. Today is not that day, especially since this bundle brings more games to my beloved Android platform. Those without an Android device can still enjoy most of the games on PC, Mac, or Linux.

Making their Android debuts in this bundle are Aquaria , Fractal , Frozen Synapse , Pulse, and Stealth Bastard Deluxe . Previously on Android but also included in the bundle are Organ Trail: Director's Cut and Broken Sword: Director's Cut . As always, the Humble Bundle lets you pay what you want and designate the money toward the developers and charities. Paying more than the average nets you Frozen Synapse and Broken Sword.

News::Mars: War Logs update brings improved English translation

Knowing what I now know about Mars: War Logs , it may end up being one of those titles that becomes a solid bargain-bin pickup. It's on the right track: Spiders Studio has put out an update for the PC game which promises a better translation. Here's an explanation from Focus Home Interactive director of production Luc Heninger:

"The tight deadlines between the game release dates meant that the initial English translation lacked depth and contained a number of errors; it was then sent to the recording studio, making the job of the actors extremely difficult. The actual game was thoroughly tested and released with very few bugs on PC, but unfortunately the procedures for the audio and text QA failed and allowed many English localization issues to slip through.

"We realized the extent of the problem after seeing the first feedback from the press and gamers," said Heninger. "The result was so far removed from what we usually produce that we took the decision to halt the submission process for the console version, which was due for release only weeks after the PC title. We have re-written the game text and dialog and, of course, recorded the actors again, replacing the sections that weren’t true to the characters in Mars."

This work will make it into the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network versions of Mars: War Logs at launch in September. Find the revamped intro embedded above. The game is also currently 33 percent off on Steam, should that change anything for you.

Neocrisis: Final Fantasy XIV was released approximately 2 years ago now. It had a very rocky debut and was hindered with bugs, issues, lack of content. The development team was sacked, and since then Square-Enix (SE) has been doing their best to salvage FFXIV. Had the name not been part of a historic heritage that saved them from bankruptcy I do not believe SE would have gone through the trouble they have to what is clearly a complete remake of the game. Everything from the battle system to the menu system, interaction, all has changed. But is the update an improvement, or is this simply just a re-skinned version of the previous attempt and ultimately doomed to have the same fate as FFXIV 1.0 (initial release).

News::Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies physical release possible

Outside of Japan, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies will be available only as a download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop. That's the current plan, at any rate. Responding to fans, Capcom senior VP Christian Svensson explains that a physical release in the US isn't wholly out of the question. As these things tend to go, it'll come down to demand.

"So, if you'd like to be heard, you can post on this thread (I'll leave it open), PM me on Capcom-Unity or hit up my twitter (@chrissvensson) as many folks already have. I need some additional ammo and these requests fit that need," wrote Svensson.

"If things go well and demand is there, in a few weeks I may be able to present an option that puts the ball back in the fans' court (in "tennis" terms, not "of law" terms). I want to stress the word "may " so as to not misrepresent the situation or promise anything. We are trying. Again, timing and pricing would be at a disadvantage to the digital option as an assumption you should make."

A limited run would surely be appreciated by series fans. Would you hold out for a retail copy?

News::Nintendo UK explains what's new in New Super Luigi U

New Super Luigi U is upon us, and I know for a fact that a lot of people aren't sold yet. So what exactly is new? As a recap, Nintendo reminds us that Luigi can jump further and higher than Mario, but he slides further as a result, making him more difficult to control. All of the game's remixed 80+ levels are timed to 100 seconds each, adding a speedrun element to them (which I will definitely take advantage of with my speedrun gaming buddy).

Ok, so that sounds great, but we all know the real showstopper here is a playable Nabbit -- instead of taking on the role of a bad guy this time around, he's a character who doesn't take damage, but also can't get power-ups. While he's obviously skewed towards beginners, he's great to screw around with, and a nice way to acclimate newcomers.

If you own New Super Mario Bros. U, you can pick up Luigi U as DLC for $19.99 this week. If you don't, you'll find the retail version hitting stores in July for $29.99.

News::Smash Bros. director talks stress of character selection

Speaking to Polygon about what it's like to choose which characters make the cut for Nintendo's popular fighting franchise, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai said that "The amount of stress I feel, it's almost to the brink of death.

"Because it's not just a matter of me personally thinking this character or that character is going to be in the game; it's that we also have the game balance, animation, graphics and sound to think about in order to make that character fully fleshed out in that universe. I have to think about all of that when I go through this decision-making process."

Cutting characters is similarly challenging. "Whether it's a minor character or a character that is one of the most highly skilled and most played, if that character is removed from the game, the people who live for that character in Smash Bros. are going to have their feelings hurt," stated Sakurai. "I think we have to really consider that, so I take a very serious, hard look at that and have empathy for the players who look for these type of characters when we're making these decisions."

Mega Man, the Wii Fit Trainer, and Animal Crossing's Villager have been announced as additions to the roster. So far, so good. I'm still cracking up over the Trainer. Sakurai says the team narrows down candidates by asking questions such as: "What is the uniqueness of this character? What does this character bring into the Smash Bros. universe? What do they have that other characters don't? How do they complement or contrast other characters?"

News::Download C64-style indie 'Last of the Patriots' for free

I'm always poking around for odd games, and usually I just find things that have some promise but aren't worth talking about or playing. Today I was pleasantly surprised to discover Last of the Patriots . It's a Commodore 64-inspired indie game that tries to tell a story without getting all bogged down by combat. It's completely free to download, and I really suggest you give it a try.

Paul Davis, the game's creator, describes it as "a prototype for future games that revolve around plot and character and less on action, with an emphasis on deeper underlying meaning." The gameplay itself is very basic, using just the arrow keys and one button for actions, but its simple gameplay allows it to tell a story in an interesting way.

News::Titanfall on PlayStation 4 ''definitely possible''

Right now, the only way anyone will be able to play Respawns Titanfall in 2014 is on a PC or on Microsofts Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles. But what about the PlayStation 4? Currently, EA and Microsoft have an exclusivity deal for consoles. That means Titanfall wont be found anywhere else for the time being. However, Respawn lead artist Joel Emslie hints there might be hope for Titanfall on a Sony console eventually. When asked by Eurogamer about the chances of Titanfall hitting the PlayStation 4, Emslie was downright optimistic. Its definitely not out of the question, Emslie replied. We have a huge appreciation for the fans. Coming out and showing it to everybody, were super nervous and wanted to make sure everybody loved it. We love all our fans, whatever console they support. So yeah. We want to make everybody happy, but this is where were at right now.
