News::Nintendo's gamescom lineup is more of the same great stuff

The list of games Nintendo is bringing to Cologne, Germany for gamescom this month looks an awful lot like the company's E3 lineup. But considering that means more Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon, and Yoshi's Woolly World, you'll hear no complaints from me.

Wii U

  • Super Smash Bros.

  • Hyrule Warriors

  • Bayonetta / Bayonetta 2

  • Yoshi's Woolly World

  • Mario Party 10

  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

  • Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

  • Splatoon

  • Mario Kart 8

3DS

  • Super Smash Bros.

  • Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

  • Fantasy Life

  • Disney Magical World

  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

I hope these aren't the same game builds we saw back in June. Realistically, though, many likely will be. Also, no Kirby and the Rainbow Curse? Bummer.

News::Facepunch's new game wants you to 'imagine tennis crossed with Street Fighter'

Rust creator Facepunch Studios said it had multiple game prototypes in the works and here's another one: Deuce, an arcade-style tennis game. Or, Street Fighter x tennis.

There's some early footage and artwork to give you a glimpse of that vision in the announcement post. "The characters won't look like typical tennis players.. so no Wimbledon starch white shorts here," writes designer Ian James. "We want to build a selection of characters that could star in their own games in the future or perhaps play different sports."

As someone who is into sport games more than he is into actual sports and loves tennis above all others, I'm so in. It's especially nice to see something like Deuce slated for PC.

Twinfinite Writes: Alicia Von Volish seems to have a tendency to wake up after nights of alcohol and passion (subtle way of saying sex) only to find mysteries she needs to solve the moment shes up. As far as detective stories go, its a pretty good way to start a day. Still, AR-Ks main struggle is attempting to mount a pretty interesting narrative while dealing with several technical missteps within the game itself.

News::Oculus Rift DK2 uses a Samsung smartphone screen as its display

During a teardown of the new Oculus Rift DK 2 unit, iFixit.com has found that the Oculus Rift uses a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen as its display unit.

Speculation is that with Oculus trying to ship 45,000 units as well as having a partnership with Samsung this was a great economical move on their part.

The screen is a sharp 5.7" Super AMOLED 1080p screen that appears to be overclocked to 75 Hz from the Galaxy Note 3's original 60 Hz. A closer look shows that Oculus ended up leaving the Synaptics S5050A touchscreen controller intact as well.

Check it out here, as well as the rest of the teardown.

News::5 PC Games That Defined the 90s

Joshua Vanderwall: Whether or not you ever played an ASCII game on a BBS, if you've been playing games for a few years, you're probably familiar with some of these classics. Wolfenstein 3D Helping to popularize the FPS genre, Wolfenstein 3D introduced the world to renowned badass B.J. Blazkowicz way back in 1992. Shareware was all the rage, the 486 processors were getting to be affordable, and memory was still at a premium. Wolfenstein 3D was amazing on the 486 in my father's basement, but it only required a 286 processor to run. Amazingly, it needed only 500k of memory and 8MB HDD space for the full install. That's roughly the size of just one of my wedding pictures.
