News::The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Review | Winnipeg Free Press

"You spend so much of your time staring gobsmacked at the technical mastery on display that you often forget you're supposed to be playing a game. At times, it feels as if its designers forgot they were supposed to be making one. Actual puzzles to solve are few and far between and crime scene re-enactments simply consist of you numbering the events of a murder in chronological order. None of it comes close to matching the joy of simply exploring the environment. The mystery at the game's heart -- what happened to Ethan Carter? -- is an engaging idea to start with, but loses steam as the truth slowly comes into focus and is eventually solved with the eyerolling-iest of eyerolling endings. You'll instead find yourself slowly enraptured by the game's other mystery: how did they get it to look so good? That's a mystery well worth looking into."

News::Quan Chi can summon a demon bat in Mortal Kombat X

The fiendish sorcerer Quan Chi returns in Mortal Kombat X. While he's said to play a major part in the story -- something I'm eager to hear more about, coming off of the last game -- today we're just shown a standard fight. Watch as he pummels Kano and summons a demonic bat.

I know I was supposed to be focusing on what's new with Quan Chi in the video, but I couldn't stop staring at that badass stage background. Those rolling waves put a spell on me.

Looks fantastic, in general. April. April is the month.

News::LA Cops brings mustaches and doughnuts to tactical shooters

Bringing a game that's early in development to a show like EGX is both a good idea and a scary one. You can get plenty of helpful feedback and some comments that aren't so helpful. "Yeah, we had this kid who was like eight years old tell us the game was too easy," LA Cops designer and coder Helana Santos told me. Considering I'd gotten both my cops killed in a simple hostage situation in a doughnut shop, I felt pretty useless.

Mind you, it would help if I'd used a lot of the tactical options that LA Cops make available. You control a pair of snappily dressed '70s cops and must shoot your way through some buildings in order to arrest or take down lots of criminals, depending on how Dirty Harry you want to get. While it's a single-player game, you'll need to make use of both of your cops to succeed; whatever cop you're not controlling will provide cover fire and shoot any enemy that wanders into his/her vision cone. That's great for covering doorways and corners.

Holding in the middle mouse button will tell an AI cop to move to a certain point and this really opens up the tactical aspect. Of course, you can play it as a straight-up action game, going all John Woo and bursting through the doors, guns blazing. More often that not, that ends up meaning you take a bullet to the face, so it's not advised. LA Cops is out right now on Steam Early Access and Helana said that there had been great feedback from the EGX crowd.

The team at Modern Dream was looking at putting in a more robust tutorial that really explained how important the tactical side of the game was, and also a possible revive/heal system to allow you to aid a downed partner. Right now, if you lose a cop, that's them gone from that level. Such a shame -- he only had one more day until retirement...

News::Watch Dogs: Bad Blood Review | Analog Addiction

Jamie Briggs, Analog Addiction - "Bad Blood doesnt greatly alter Watch Dogs original product, and the same core problems that I had with the original release are still present. We take control of T-Bone within the same city, housing the same reputation meter, with access to the same activities, same digital trips and an almost identical upgrade skill tree to Aiden Pearce; T-Bones animation is also quite similar to Aiden Pearce himself. Watch Dogs Bad Blood is more Watch Dogs, with a few new features. If the base game didnt click with you, Bad Blood wont alter your opinion. However, if you have been wanting to scratch that Watch Dogs itch one more time, Bad Blood is the perfect way to satisfy the craving."

News::Sand Sailor's atmospheric Black The Fall slinks to Kickstarter

Romanian development studio Sand Sailor has recently taken to Kickstarter to fund its stealth-action platformer, Black The Fall. Inspired by the communist country they grew up in, the developers would like their game to impart on the player the experience of what it is like to exist in such a fearful and alienating society; where everyone you meet must be regarded as a potential enemy, an informer, or a criminal.

Black The Fall offers the player the choice: use violence and attempt to force your way through the dreary post-industrial wastes, or use stealth and avoid confrontations. Think twice before you squeeze that trigger -- every action will have potential consequences. A reputation system is also in place, so how you interact with the populace will affect how the game plays out.

It looks stunning visually, bringing to mind the style popularized by indie darling LIMBO but to me it feels more palpable, less dreamlike in its presentation. The Natives and Machines seem far more threatening and oppressive than the shadowy figures that stalked you in Play Dead's puzzle platformer. I found the hulking Sentinal particularly interesting. Perhaps in a nod to Kojima's bipedal killing machines, its animal-like movements hint at an intelligence controlling the machine, something more reactive and calculating than a simple robot.

The game will come in two acts, the first of which is expected to be delivered this December, and the final installment should be out sometime in the first half of 2015. If the game looks familiar to you, there's good reason for that. Originally, Sand Sailor had a rougher, earlier build available on Steam Early Access. For those of you who bought into this outmoded version of the game, don't worry; you'll be grandfathered in to the new Early Access program when it becomes available.

At the time of this writing, Black The Fall has raised £6,861 of its £25,000 goal with 29 days to go. If you'd like to learn more about the title, or would like to become a Backer make sure to check out the game's Kickstarter page.

News::Minimum Review | Power Up Gaming

Austin Flynn writes: "Developer Human Head Studios aptly named their latest third-person shooter Minimum for both its simplistic aesthetics and familiar gameplay, and although we live in a time where pixel-perfect graphics and involved storylines reign supreme, this PC title aims to prove that sometimes less is more. With character models reminiscent of sketching dummies and the same old point-and-click mechanics we've all grown up with, Minimum heavily relies on an unfamiliar game mode and an engaging crafting system to draw players in."

News::The Evil Within Preview - Remember: Burn After Bleeding | Dealspwn

Brendan Griffiths writes: "Todays session sees our detective leading man making his way through a sinister mansion full of strange noises, tortured sobbing, wet ripping sounds and a host of nasties sporting dead-eyed barbwire couture. Forget any concerns about the haunted mansion cliché, this is the sort of nasty setting weve missed in recent years. And dont forget, this is just one stage of Shinji Mikamis blood-soaked love letter to the genre he helped to define. Its also the first decent taste of horror on new-gen hardware and it suitably impresses on the graphical front from the start. Its the shadows that really put you on edge though. Be it the flickering shards emitted by your gas lamp as you edge down a dim corridor, the light behind a sheet betraying the twitching silhouette or the gradual pouring of light into a dark room as you slowly creak open a door into the unknown."
