News::Titanfall hands-on - PCGamesN

PCGamesN: The best bit of Titanfall is losing. The game doesnt just end, you see. Instead, you have to flee to an evac point in the corner of the map without getting killed by the winners. Your team get bonus experience for every member that makes it to safety, and the opposition get experience for every one of you they can kill. What makes it so good is that every player has a jetpack-powered double jump and can wallrun. When the game ends your whole team turns around and begins leaping into the air, looking to get out of the fight they were eager to dive into a moment before. Players are springing through windows, running along walls, and generally making like Mirrors Edge. Its a wicked sight to behold. But theres so much else to love about Titanfall.

News::The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt impressions | PCGamesN

PCGamesN: "After seeing The Witcher 3 I have a suspicion its something special. Its much more than a prettier looking, more open version of The Witcher 2. It looks like a game by developers who finally have the experience and resources to make what theyve always wanted: an open world RPG, full of choices with no right answers, the consequences of which can be brutal and far reaching. It also has exploding crows."

News::Shadow play: first look at Dragon Age: Inquisition in action | OXM UK

OXM UK: "Who expects the Spanish Inquisition? Pretty much everybody, as it turns out. BioWare's third Dragon Age is a predictable response to widespread disappointment over the second - it's the first game again, but shot full of horse testosterone and with the benefit of more recent thinking on open world RPG design. The developer has a slightly gentler way of putting this, of course. Inquisition is 'the game we've been striving to make since the series began', producer Cameron Lee explains when I stop by to see his latest work in action."

News::Destructoid- Dragon Age: Inquisition Preview

DT:As much as I love Bioware's style of creating compelling companions and giving the player agency to make choices that ultimately affect the overarching narrative, I have never been able to get into the Dragon Age series, no matter how much I've tried. This might be because I started with Dragon Age 2, and ended when I tossed my controller in disgust at the combat that seemed at turns frustrating and tiresome. I knew that beyond the repetitive battles there existed a truly interesting story with well developed companion characters, but the spawning waves of enemies seemed like such a lazy design choice and I couldn't forgive the game for wasting my time in that way.

News::Dragon Age: Inquisition brings playable Qunari, keeps and greater control | Polygon

Polygon: "BioWare calls Inquisition its biggest Dragon Age game to date. That's a common video game sequel claim, but at PAX Prime, the developer showed off a section of the game set in an area called Crestwood, a location that executive producer Mark Darrah said is bigger than the entirety of Dragon Age 2. As a result, BioWare has added mounts that helps speed up the travel across Inquisition's vast land. While not quite an open world, the areas of Dragon Age: Inquisition are massive and sprawling, and, based on the demo of Crestwood that BioWare showed at PAX, offer memorable moments of cresting a vista and seeing the vastness of Dragon Age's fantasy land."

News::Review: Open Me!

Augmented Reality games tend to be very hit or miss, with the majority falling squarely in the "miss" category. Either they don't quite fit well within the reality setting, or they don't do enough to capture your attention to keep you playing for very long -- and all of them seem to have issues with their core gameplay design of augmenting your reality.

Open Me!, however, hopes to eschew those hindrances with a unique take on the AR theme, while offering some truly challenging puzzles. Be warned though: playing this game can end up being more of a workout than you bargained for.

News::Guns of Icarus Online (PC) | FTG Review

FTG Writes: And we went down in flames. Guns of Icarus Online has moments of that level of intensity in the team-based airship combat game. The airships themselves look like a cross between the first vessels that were sailing around the world and a dirigible. Players pick one of three roles to play on the airship either captain, engineer, or gunner, and enter the fray against enemy airships. The match options are the standard fare of deathmatch, capture the flag, or resource run. The matchmaking is well defined and easy to navigate, which is good because this is an online versus-only game. Guns of Icarus Online has a community of what youd expect, ranging from the really cool players to the people youd Falcon Punch in the throat if they ever spoke to you like that face to face. While many former fans of the series have written the third installment off long ago, those who stuck with it over the past year know that Blizzard has been actively working to improve the game. The Diablo 3 of today is a better game than on release day, but if it is to have the longevity of Diablo 2, a lot more work needs to be done. Memorable in all the right ways and even a few more, but retaining the core essence of the open-world genre and its inherent destructive catharsis, Saints Row IV is about as good an open-world game as were going to get in the twilight years of this generation (then again, I guess itll only be two weeks before we can stress test that statement). GI:Few fantasy creatures are as recognizable as dragons, a fact that can be a blessing and a curse for a video game. Do you like Mark Cerny? Do you want to hear him speak Japanese and talk about his upcoming game, Knack ? Who doesn't, right? Well this video is for you, as it gives us a more in-depth look at the game, in terms of the story, visuals, and the overall gameplay experience.

I'm not crazy about Knack in general (the art style is a bit too bland for me), but I'll definitely be checking it out around the PS4's launch for sure. In the video, Cerny notes that Knack's higher difficulties are actually a challenge, which gives me hope that it'll be more than just a quick five hour "one and done" type of game.

News::Europa Universalis IV review | Thunderbolt

Nick Horth, Thunderbolt writes: Europa Universalis IV puts you at the reigns of an entire nation, and charges you with taking care of everything from wars to theological doctrine to trade embargoes. The depth of control and choice given here is nothing short of remarkable. Nearly every conceivable way to rule is catered for, from Napoleon-style military expansion to the more insidiously evil colonialism that we Brits were so bloody good at. Want to pull your British troops out of Europe and focus on exploration of the new world? You can do it. Rather play as landlocked Poland, and build a force of diplomats and spies to undermine your enemies? No problem. These options, combined with the utterly dizzying amount of countries available to play, essentially make EUIV endlessly replayable, providing you can master it.

News::Final Fantasy XIV Video Monetization Rule Updated and Clarified: Lets Play Videos Can Be Monetized

A couple days ago the policies published for the usage of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn copyrighted and trademarked materials made the headlines as they prevented users to monetize video on YouTube and streaming services like Twitch.tv, effectively causing an uproar within the "let's play" community, similar to what happened with Nintendo a few weeks back. Today Square Enix decided to listen to the rather vocal feedback and published an updated version of the policies that mentions that monetization is now allowed. We haven't seen a whole lot of footage for Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate , that Vita and 3DS spinoff that's launching alongside of the console versions of Arkham Origins , but today you can get a pretty solid glimpse at the bulk of what it has to offer through the above video.

While the gameplay doesn't blow me away at all, I'm loving the visual novel style delivery (if that's not Ashley Wood it sure looks like it), and I think it perfectly suits the portable platform. I wonder how the 3DS and Vita versions will compare, or if there will be any sacrifices made to comply with the limitations of Nintendo's portable.

It appears as if the Xbox One will be getting a major upgrade in voice chat quality, and you can see the difference right here, or on Major Nelson's blog. Due to the integration of Skype's audio codec and a better controller (with an improved wireless data transfer rate), a higher quality voice output is achieved. Major Nelson notes that this will not only work with Skype, but multiplayer as well.

After a bit of flip-flopping, it's nice to know that the headset will now be bundled with every Xbox One. Whether it will actually sound like this consistently is up in the air, but on paper and in a closed environment, it's sounding pretty damn good.

News::Spending Time: The Creeping Horror of Microtransactions in Full Priced Games

IncGamers' Peter Parrish takes a look at the devious business of adding extra charges to full priced games. "Of all the pernicious publisher practices out there, microtransactions in games youve already paid full price for are surely the worst. In fact lets dispense with the term microtransactions altogether, as it seems to have been designed by committee to make the concept sound as inoffensive as possible. Using the word only legitimises that deception. Most of the time they are anything but micro."

News::Lost Planet 3 Review | Empire

When Capcom pulled back the curtain on Lost Planet 3 early in 2012 it wasnt the change in direction that turned heads, it was the fact that development duties had handed over to a Western studio, namely Spark Unlimited. Anyone a semblance of interest in games will recall the Sherman Oaks based developer as the team responsible for two of the most horrific games of a generation: Turning Point and Legendary: The Box.

News::Are MMOs Being Dumbed Down?

Personally, Im not much of a team player in MMORPGs, preferring to solo as much content as I can, as Ive found that relying on random people will usually find you screwed. I decided to try two games for this little study, and made sure they were games that I had played off and on since release. This way, I could more easily compare the titles degree of difficulty from release to present day. This little study of mine has taken about two months to complete, with one month set aside for each game. So, sit back and relax, and prepare to read one hell of a long, drawn out opinion on why gamers have become lazy over time.

News::Play as the 'older' versions of Left 4 Dead's cast

That's Francis up there. Yeah. At one point in time, he and the other three survivors of Left for Dead looked ... how do I put this politely? Iteration is important, let's just say. Valve has graciously released the original character models for use in Left 4 Dead 2.

"It was an interesting walk back through our content tree to find all the various pieces and versions," writes Valve. "Depending on your definition of the old models, some of these may vary in some slight detail as we work in an iterative process and never internally defined a version of these models. They have always just been Zoey, Louis, Bill, and Francis to us."

You can find Zoey, Bill, Louis, and yes, bearded Francis, over on the Steam Workshop.

News::Developers Are Responsible For Their Communities

Gaming Union: "Cheating, homophobia, women hating, malicious hacks, suicide goading, and incredible degrees of immaturity are just a few of the many negative connotations associated with online gaming. News::Reggie says the 2DS is for five- to six-year-olds

With Nintendo's surprising announcement of the 2DS today, some people are wondering who exactly the device was created for. While the price point of $129 is appealing, the slate form and omission of 3D were curious changes. It turns out that Nintendo had a younger audience in mind when it designed the 2DS.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, told IGN that the 2DS' target audience is "that first-time handheld gaming consumer." Nintendo recommends that children be at least seven years of age to use the 3DS, so Fils-Aime says that the 2DS creates an opportunity for five- and six-year-olds.

"How do we approach that as one target? How do we get more people playing Nintendo games," Fils-Aime asked rhetorically. "That helped spur the idea of the 2DS. Let's have the consumer have access to all of these great games at a dramatically lower price point," he continued.
