News:: 25% off Civ VI: Rise and Fall, PUBG, and more PC games at GMG

Digital retailer Green Man Gaming has started up a site-wide coupon code knocking 25% off almost every PC game on their site (as far as we know; we haven't come across any excluded items).

This is actually a pretty hot deal because you can now pick up rarely discounted titles such as the upcoming Civilization VI: Rise and Fall DLC for only $22.49, or other popular but hardly reduced titles such as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Cuphead. (Both games have had strict price control by their respective publishers.)

Other noteworthy picks include upcoming titles out in January and February such as Lost Sphear, Secret of Mana, Railway Empire, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. In fact, with Railway Empire you'll be able to stack the existing 15% off pre-order discount with the 25% off GMG coupon, making the train management sim only $32. We've listed all the noteworthy deals below, including select DLC expansion passes and digital currencies.

The code expires Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM Eastern.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II patch brings a new hero ship and balance changes

The first Star Wars Battlefront II patch of the new year went live today and with it comes a host of tuning changes and a couple additions. I was hoping for something more extravagant to kick off 2018, if I'm being frank. It's a standard patch in a game still being held back by a major unresolved problem.

What's new? Protagonist Iden Versio's ship has joined the game as a Hero Starfighter (you'll need 5,000 credits to unlock it) and the 10-on-10 Blast mode is now playable on the The Last Jedi's Crait.

Alongside the official patch notes, there's also a running list of undocumented changes assembled by reddit user Tactical_Turtle12. The main point of interest is probably that DICE has lowered the milestones for weapon and weapon mod unlocks. Otherwise, it's nothing too out of the ordinary.

News:: The Incredibles seems set to be Pixar's first Lego game

There have been plenty of Lego video games centered around family-friendly properties, but Warner Bros. and Traveller's Tales appear ready to tap an entirely new source of material. It seems as a Pixar film is going to get its first Lego adaption.

According to a report from Comicbook.com (which was independently corroborated by Eurogamer), Traveller's Tales is working on Lego The Incredibles 2. The naming is kind of confusing, as this isn't a sequel to another Incredibles game; instead, it's meant to be a direct tie-in to the Incredibles 2 film that's releasing this June.

That's not the only Lego project that leaked, though. There's word of a Suicide Squad-like Lego DC Supervillains (although that might not be the actual title). It's about what you'd expect -- a game that prominently features the likes of Joker and Lex Luthor instead of their good guy counterparts Batman and Superman. There's no word as to when this one might release, but there are usually multiple Lego games in any given calendar year.

They're two rumors, but they both seem highly likely to pan out. And if Lego The Incredibles 2 proves to be a hit, there's a whole lot of other Pixar stuff that could be similarly adapted. Bet you never thought a Lego game could make you cry until Lego Up came along.

News:: Link Between Worlds and Mario 3D Land join Nintendo Selects next month

Three new games will be joining the "Nintendo Selects" line-up for 3DS in a few weeks. On February 3, you'll be able to nab The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D Land and Ultimate NES Remix for $19.99 through the eShop or at retail. This is one of those rare instances where Nintendo games get discounted (it only took seven years for 3D Land to go down in price).

If you somehow haven't acquired these games over the last half decade, I'd basically recommend all of them at that price point. Link Between Worlds is a particularly good choice, even if the whole game is on the exceptionally easy side. While the 3DS port of NES Remix is missing a few games, getting it for $20 is a steal.

News:: Night in the Woods is coming to the Switch

In a time where indie games are pouring onto the Switch, you can now count one more fantastic game among their numbers. Night in the Woods is coming to the Nintendo Switch on Feb. 1, 2018.

Developer Infinite Fall announced the news on Twitter earlier today. The Switch release will include all the content from the Weird Autumn addition to the base game, including new mini-games, dialogue options, and sequences to play through. The bite-sized Longest Night and Lost Constellation mini-episodes released prior to Night in the Woods are included with this release as well.

Since this is the definitive edition of Night in the Woods, Switch owners should be satisfied that they will receive every bit of content released up until this point. Now all that's left is to wait two measly weeks until its release.

News:: WWE 2K18 showcases latest DLC pack 'Enduring Icons'

This new DLC pack for WWE 2K18 celebrates the illustrious careers of five of Vince McMahon's big sweaty house of hard knock “superstars” of yesteryear! First up, “The Glamazon” herself, Beth Phoenix, who is easily one of the mid to late 2000s best female in-ring workers.

At least that's what WWE would love you to remember her for, not the part where her final run in the WWE ended with losing to AJ Lee, only for RAW Managing Supervisor Vickie Guerrero to come out and restart the match, giving Beth the win, only to then kayfabe fire her afterwards for “poor performance" (since in reality, she gave her notice due to family reasons).

At least it wasn't as bad as the tail end of Lita's run...

News:: Learn everything about Civilization VI: Rise and Fall with this new trailer

Ever since the announcement late last year, I've been eager to find out what new stuff is coming in Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. Obviously Firaxis was going to include new leaders, but what gameplay tweaks were coming to fix some of the issues from the core game? Was there anything the series hasn't already touched that could even be expanded on?

Turns out we won't even have to wait for launch, because this new trailer basically explains everything about the game. While you won't get a feel for how these changes work in the minute-to-minute gameplay, you won't need to guess how the new "Heroic" and "Dark" ages work or what new policies are on offer.

News:: Far Cry 2 is another good get for Xbox One backward compatibility

I'm not sure where Far Cry 2 falls on your list, but for me, it's the most memorable game in the series -- despite not being my favorite to play. It's harsh pretty much across the board. It can often feel unfair. It requires patience and some relearning, especially early on while you're getting situated. But if you don't succumb to malaria and bounce right off, Far Cry 2 will leave a lasting, one-of-a-kind impression.

The divisive 2008 game, along with Sniper Elite V2 and Driver: San Francisco (but only if you have it on disc or previously bought a digital copy), are playable on Xbox One via backward compatibility.

There's probably no going back to Far Cry 2's themes and not-exactly-user-friendly mechanics for Ubisoft, but I can't help wondering what a more modern take on its principles might look like.

Quirky adventure game Night in the Woods is a finalist for three awards in the upcoming Independent Games Festival: the Seumas McNally grand prize, visual art and narrative categories. Now it's coming to Nintendo's Switch console this February 1st, a year after its initial release on Mac, Windows, Linux and PlayStation 4. News:: The evolution of Super Meat Boy Forever

I had the chance to speak with Tommy Refenes, one of the co-founders of Team Meat, and he gave me a much clearer understanding of just how much Super Meat Boy Forever has changed over the years.

As an adamant fan of the original title, on the Xbox 360, I’ve been following development on its follow-up for years now. I remember hearing the very first rumblings of a possible sequel, and I remember just how confused I was when I eventually found out that it was being developed for mobile. My naïve, much-less-bald, younger self couldn’t help but wonder, “How the hell is that even going to work?”

News:: Assassin's Creed Origins' Hidden Ones DLC set for a January 23 launch

Yesterday, we hypothesized that the arrival of a giant Assassin's Creed Origins patch meant that the upcoming Hidden Ones add-on had to be imminent. And that's exactly the case. Ubisoft announced today that Origins' first proper DLC will release on January 23, one week from today, for $10.

The Hidden Ones highlights the early days of the Assassin's Brotherhood, as it takes place four years after the events in the original game. Romans are the foes, as this story sends us into two new regions -- Sinai and Valley of the Kings. As for post-game improvements to Bayek, Hidden Ones: raises the level cap to 45, adds two levels to crafted gear, and introduces four legendary weapons and a handful of other miscellaneous items.

Ubisoft also used today's reveal as an opportunity to better outline some other future Assassin's Creed Origins content. On February 20, the Discovery Mode will launch as a free download for Origins owners and as a standalone $20 purchase on PC. Discovery Mode allows players to wander about Origins' Egypt without any sort of conflict or combat. It also has guided tours in an effort to provide some historical context to ancient Egypt.

Lastly, Assassin's Creed Origins bows out in the spring with what's presumably its last add-on. On March 6, The Curse of the Pharaohs releases for $20. This expansion takes players to Thebes as they square off against mythical Egyptian creatures in an attempt to reverse the curse that brought dead pharaohs back to life. Apart from some more new gear, The Curse of the Pharaohs raises the level cap to 55. Seems as if we're still a ways from saying bye bye to Bayek.

News:: Two Point Hospital coming in 2018 from the minds behind Theme Hospital

Growing up the diseased child I was, I spent many weeks every year at Seattle Children's Hospital, usually over the holiday break, having doctors rip my skin off so they could replace it with skin from other parts of my body, aka skin grafts. From head to toe, I am a complete mess and the painful and frustrating experience has made me absolutely hate hospitals. I hate the look of them, the smell, the sound, everything.

And yet, I can't get enough of medically themed entertainment. From television to film to the wonderful Trauma Center series -- may it rest in peace -- I just love fake hospital settings. That love stretches all the way back to a rainy afternoon at my best friend's house when, after playing Command & Conquer: Red Alert for several hours, I got my chance to try Theme Hospital. I was far too young at the time to wrap my head around the mechanics of the game, but now I'm certainly old enough to get it and will once again try to build the perfect place to let patients die from lupus this year with Two Point Hospital.

From Two Point Studios, a developer founded in 2016 by two former Bullfrog employees who worked on Theme Hospital, Two Point Hospital will task players with building the perfect hospital and successfully treating the patients that show up looking for help. Much like its spiritual predecessor, Two Point will feature a host of strange and funny diseases like lightheadedness as well as your run-of-the-mill hospital maintenance issues like ghosts and mummies.

News:: Fortnite Battle Royale's map is getting more defined biomes, more locations

Epic is putting a lot of other studios to shame when it comes to transparency regarding their latest project, Fortnite. In addition to open communication on their forums, they also put out a heap of development update videos with game footage and incorporate user questions into the mix.

The latest update involves changes to the Battle Royale map, most notably more defined biomes ("the swamp will feel swampier"), and more locations on the west side, including a new city. The map is also slated for plenty more updates beyond this change.

Fornite is still my Battle Royale game of choice and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. Much of it is due to Epic's development process, which makes it easier to commit when I know they're in it for the long haul.

News:: This Super Mario 64 x Banjo-Kazooie mod is so surreal

If I had seen this mod back in the Nintendo 64 days, I would've lost my mind. It's essentially a clever mash-up of Banjo-Kazooie and Super Mario 64, and while Mario running around Spiral Mountain is impressive in its own right, the fan creation is even better once you take in all the little details.

Whereas some of these projects can be cool conceptually but rough around the edges in execution, this one nails a sense of authenticity. Clearly, a lot of thought went into it. Super Banjo-Kazooie 64 is the result of the program SM64Paint and the modders Trenavix, Waschpenner, and Shyguyhex.

This isn't a full game yet but it isn't insignificant, either -- the demo has 18 Jiggies to collect.

"If this ends up getting a lot of attention, I'll consider continuing the hack, but otherwise, it'll just be the demo," says Trenavix. Something tells me we'll want to see more.

News:: Saturday Morning RPG coming to Nintendo Switch this Spring

Indie nostalgia-fest Saturday Morning RPG is coming to the Nintendo Switch. The announcement was made by developer Mighty Rabbit Studios via Limited Run Games.

Saturday Morning RPG, already available on other platforms, is an episodic, JRPG-inspired adventure which sees our hero, Marty, embark on a wild adventure after the hapless high-school kid is given special powers. The game is slathered in nostalgic overtones, packed to the brim with '80s pop-culture references, including music by Vince DiCola, who also composed the score for Transformers: The Movie.

Players can guide Marty through the game's self-contained episodes in any order they choose, defeating retro-inspired enemies in dynamic turn-based combat and utilising familiar items to power up his abilities. Remember Fruit Stripe? That existed.

Although the game will launch as a digital download, Limited Run Games will be producing a physical copy of the title, which will be available to order exclusively from their website.

News:: Microsoft may be working on a new Xbox Elite controller

Microsoft's Xbox Elite controller is pricey, but arguably the go-to choice for Xbox One owners who want a gamepad that fits their exact needs. And apparently, there's enough demand to merit a sequel. Multiple leaks appear to have uncovered a new Elite controller that builds on lessons learned from the first model. If the tips are accurate, it would include Bluetooth (to painlessly connect to your PC), a USB-C wired connection, an Apple MagSafe-style charging connector on the back and a built-in battery instead of disposables. And naturally, there are more tweaks for players who want their controls just so.

News:: The photo mode in Shadow of the Colossus sounds wonderful

Built-in capturing and streaming and photo modes continue to be a highlight for me this console generation. Some games benefit from the latter more than others and I'd say Bluepoint's Shadow of the Colossus remake for PlayStation 4 definitely falls into the "highly photogenic" group.

"Everything that I had access to as the Art Director, you have access to as the player [in the new photo mode]," says Bluepoint's Mark Skelton. "You can start with a filter and adjust all the way down to color balancing the shadows, midtones and highlights. Then on top of that, control the depth of field ranges and amounts, in addition to the vignette. That's an amazing amount of control."

He also notes that you can play Shadow of the Colossus with "some of the filters running," so even if you aren't into taking pretty pictures per say, there's a reason to dig into this particular photo mode.

I hadn't realized this was out quite so soon (February 6!) and now I'm extra stoked.

News:: Senran Kagura Burst: Re:Newal's new trailer features poorly-woven clothes

Marvelous have released a new trailer for the upcoming Senran Kagura Burst: Re:Newal, featuring everyone's favorite large-chested shinibo from the Hanzo and Hebijo Academies, losing their clothes in various ways while in heated combat.

As a newcomer to the series - with Peach Beach Splash being the only game I've played so far - and seeing as this latest entry is a remake of the original Senran Kagura Burst, I may as well continue down the rabbit hole to experience the origin of all of this... only I wonder if that is just the latest in a series of poor choices that got me to this point in the first place.

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal will release for the PS4 in Japan on February 22. There is no word yet on a Western localisation.

News:: Tyrael gets a rework in Heroes of the Storm along with a rad anime-as-hell skin

Blizzard, like many other MOBA developers, periodically "reworks" older Heroes of the Storm characters so that they're relevant in the meta. This can happen if a hero falls out of favor due to eventual power creep, or because their kit just isn't plain fun -- for Tyrael, it's a lot of the former.

The high mana-cost warrior has had low pickrates for some time, and although it's far past due the Archangel of Justice is back. Among general buffs like mana reduction he seems a lot more proficient at solo laning, which already makes him more interesting. The changes seem sound, but the fact that his boring kamikaze passive -- which doesn't feel on-theme at all -- wasn't altered is disappointing.

Alongside of the rework comes a new skin for the hero, Mecha Tyrael. Tyrael now joins Mecha Tassadar and several others (including the new Mecha Rehgar skin) to form a Voltron of anime skins.

We are just a couple of weeks away from the release of Capcom's Monster Hunter: World, one of 2018's most-anticipated titles. Capcom continue to stoke the fire's of the hype train with marketing tidbits almost every week, teasing the game's dangerous environment and deadlier inhabitants.

For those of you who can't wait to get stuck in, the game's final beta runs January 18 - 22 on PS4. A PS Plus account is not necessary to partake in the adventure. For the rest of us, Monster Hunter: World launches January 26 on PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC release scheduled for Autumn 2018.

News:: Evidently Super Meat Boy's Switch day-one sales 'came close' to its debut on Xbox 360

The Switch is a perfect home for platformers it seems, as another tried and true classic has done very well for itself on the system. According to developer Team Meat, Super Meat Boy's day-one sales for the game have come "shockingly close to it's debut on Xbox 360 back in 2010."

These  numbers make sense. New gamers who just started their gaming career on the Switch have probably heard tales of its difficulty and quality. And as one of the pioneers of downloadable gaming on the Xbox Live Arcade many years back, Meat Boy is a perfect candidate for double, triple, or even quadruple dipping.

It seems like the waters have been tested, and now Team Meat has confirmed a physical edition of the game down the line.
