News:: Mega Man X Legacy Collection's X3 will be based on the SNES port

You'll find a lot of debate on what the best version of Mega Man X3 is, but for the purpose of Capcom's upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection, the SNES original is going to be represented over the PS1, Saturn or PC ports. Maybe this has to do with music or licensing issues, but I'm sure some people will be upset over this decision (while other are probably rejoicing).

Capcom has also confirmed it is working internally on the collection, instead of Digital Eclipse. This will come as a surprise considering the previous Mega Man collections, the Disney Afternoon collection and the upcoming Street Fighter Anniversary collection are all developed by Digital Eclipse.

Oddly enough, the PS1 port was included in 2006's Mega Man X Collection released for the PS2 and GameCube. I'm not sure why that was (or why this is being changed now), but if you've never tried the SNES version, now is your time.

News:: When is it time to stop gaming: A look at the struggles of being an older gamer

[Every now and again a blog comes around that hits so close to home for me that if feels like I could have written it verbatim had I been given the prompt. This is one of them. NakedBigBoss talks about how gaming and his perception of it has changed throughout the years - and not always for the better. But like any good story, there's still light at the end of the tunnel for aging gamers like us. Give this a read, and chip in below to tell us if he strikes any similar chords for you! - Wes]

I was at home playing video games due to storm number one hundred hitting the northeast of the United States and my job closing for the day. As I was sitting comfortably on the couch, playing Jak and Daxter on my PS4 because nostalgia is a quite powerful drug, I was suddenly deeply saddened that I never have this kind of time to game. Looking at my various systems, and the collection of played and unplayed titles that accompany them, I had a moment where I seriously asked myself: "Is it time to hang up the controllers and say goodbye?" Pondering this, I began to question how I got to this point in my gaming life...

News:: Super Bomberman R shows off its new system-exclusive guest characters

Super Bomberman R has really come into its own post-launch, and all that work is leading up to a round of ports for the Nintendo Switch title. It's heading to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this June with P-Body, Ratchet, and Master Chief as exclusive new characters, respectively. Here's how they look:

It's about what I'd expect given all of the other guest characters that've found their way into Super Bomberman R since launch, from Dracula to Vic Viper to even Pyramid Head. I'm good with the original Switch version, but I'm glad to see this game reach a wider audience. The new ports will cost $40.

News:: New trademarks for Onimusha spotted

Is it the right time for Onimusha to return? Earlier this month, Capcom filed trademarks for Onimusha in multiple regions, rekindling hope for fans of the early 2000s action-adventure series. With games like Nioh catching on in a surprisingly big way, I could see a revival doing quite well.

Hopefully it's a just matter of when, not if. Onimusha and Dino Crisis fans have been patient.

With nothing more than these listings and recent history to go on, a remastered collection seems like a safe bet. We last heard about the series in 2015 when Capcom registered an Onimusha trademark in Japan. I'd be fine with an HD compilation, but I'm dreaming of what a remake might look like.

News:: Sega brings 'Football Manager Touch 2018' to Nintendo Switch

It's officially official: We told you it was coming soon, and now a few days later Football Manager has made its way to the Nintendo Switch. As for which version it is, if you had money on Touch, you're a winner. Meaning, this is a version of the game that's the same across Linux, Mac, mobile platforms and PC. The Switch version uses both touchscreen and traditional Joycon controls, and it's the first console version with the full 3D match engine. It's currently on offer through the Nintendo eShop for $40 (US) / £30 (UK) -- so decide now if you really still have time to finish a few more shrines in Breath of the Wild.

News:: Co-op adventure A Way Out sells over a million copies

Hazelight Studios' prison-break-turned-bonding-adventure A Way Out has cleared one million sales.

This is genuinely a pleasant surprise. I'm only midway through (watch my playthrough with Ray over here), but I'm having a ball so far and hope we see more of these co-op experiences in the future. Learning that A Way Out is selling well despite not hearing many people talk about it is great news.

As Brett said in his review, "It's campy fun and that's perfectly fine."

News:: PlayStation's new Flash Sale is just for horror games

Today is a Friday the 13th (the first of two in 2018!), and PlayStation has decided scares and spooks would make a fine theme for April's Flash Sale. Through Monday morning, more than 100 horror games are discounted on the North American PlayStation Store.

There's some good stuff here for anyone who has held out on some of the higher-profile horror titles in recent years. Some standouts are Alien: Isolation for $9, Until Dawn for $6, Prey for $20, The Evil Within 2 for $30, and Inside for $8.

But, you might get mileage out of entirely different sorts of scary stuff. Here's the entire list of what's on sale through April 16 at 8am Pacific:

News:: Playable Ewoks are coming to Star Wars Battlefront II

DICE is planning a new limited-time event for Star Wars Battlefront II that pits a squad of stormtroopers against spear-wielding Ewoks and that's just the kind of silly thing to get me back into the game.

The Ewok Hunt mode will be playable starting next Wednesday, April 18. If you start the match as a stormtrooper, you'll get to blast the critters to your heart's content. But, should you fall in battle, you'll respawn as an Ewok. If all of the Empire's troops are wiped out, the Ewoks win. Sounds entertaining.

The update also marks the return of Crystals, Battlefront II's real-world currency used to buy "appearances" for heroes, villains, and troopers. (Cosmetics are also purchasable with in-game Credits.)

Beyond the recent progression overhaul and next week's Ewok Hunt, DICE will be moving back into working on seasons. These will center around a theme like a new movie or an anniversary and "usually span multiple months." Season Two is set for May, with "details a little closer to the time." Solo?

News:: Live-action videos tell tales of Yakuza's Dragon of Dojima, Kazuma Kiryu

For me, the hook about Kazuma Kiryu, protagonist of Sega's long-running Yakuza series, is that once he shows up to a scene, you know everything's going to be alright. There could be damsels in distress, kids in danger, a buddy at death's door, and insurmountable odds, but once the snakeskin shoes of the Dragon of Dojima appear on the scene, you know that fear redundant.

Sega, promoting the upcoming Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, have released a series of live-action shorts featuring characters telling tales of the own run-ins with the quiet man in the sharp suit. They're well-produced and do a good job in building up the legacy of a gaming hero who has been in my "all-time greatest" list ever since I played the original Yakuza, many moons ago.

You can check out the videos below, to hype yourself for another round of bike-smashing, face-stamping, karaoke-singing, innocent-saving, golf-swinging action. Kazuma has lived a million lifetimes in just one, and if The Song of Life proves to be his last hurrah, I'll be there, pouring a drink for the Dragon of Dojima.

News:: Get a good look at Funky Kong and Switch-centric features in this Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze overview

The $60 Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is nearly here, and a new Switch-centric trailer shows off a few nuanced features for the portable.

You'll see a very brief smash icon for hitting barrels at the end of a match that entails both Joy-Con, as well as a quick demonstration of the portable feature, where two people can break off a piece of the Switch (read: Joy-Con, I just like the phrase "break me off a piece of that Switch").

Despite the greed involved with the price I'm really looking forward to diving into this incredible platforming world again, and it'll be even easier with the Switch on the go. The 3DS port of Donkey Kong Country Returns became my preferred way to play the game as the years went on and I suspect this Switch edition will be the same.

News:: Conan Exiles receives new trailer ahead of its official release next month

After spending a little over a year in Steam Early Access, Funcom's open-world survival title Conan Exiles is nearing its official release. The publisher has put out a final trailer to showcase the game in its completed state.

In the game, the player takes up the role of a warrior left for dead, who is rescued from crucifixion by the titular barbarian. From there, the player shapes their own path to glory and notoriety, finding clothing, building a fortress, honing their combat skills, defeating would-be usurpers and terrifying giant creatures, all en route to becoming a legend. Also, cocks.

The game is pretty damn brutal, often requiring you to act in immoral ways in order to survive in an immoral world. The protagonist must literally work their way up from their initial unarmed, injured, naked form to become the most powerful and feared entity in the land, often through struggle, massacre, enslavement and ruthlessness.

The final release of Conan Exiles will see the light of day on PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 8.

News:: Guinness strips Billy 'King of Kong' Mitchell's world records

Well, that was fast. When Twin Galaxies announced it'd stripped Billy "King of Kong" Mitchell's high scores from its forums yesterday, the gaming record-keeping outfit said it'd notified Guinness World Records of such. Today, Kotaku reports that Guinness will strip all of Mitchell's forged video game high scores including entries for Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong Jr. from its ledger as well.

News:: A new BioShock game is apparently in development

BioShock is one of 2K Games' most important properties, but there hasn't been much rumbling about where the series will go next. The most recent installment was 2013's BioShock Infinite; a year after its release, lead BioShock studio Irrational Games was more or less shut down. Since then, there have been some re-releases and remasters for current-generation consoles, but nothing substantial in the way of a new game.

That doesn't mean BioShock is done. In a lengthy report on the state of Mafia III developer Hangar 13, Kotaku has uncovered the existence of a "top secret" BioShock project -- and it's happening in Novata, California in the building next to Hangar 13.

Kotaku writes: "Next door, a small group of people were working on a project codenamed Parkside, quietly recruiting from across the video game industry for a game so secret, they wouldn’t even tell their colleagues at Hangar 13 about it. Word got out, though, that it was in fact a new game in one of the most interesting shooter franchises of the past decade: BioShock."

However, it wasn't as easy as just bringing Hangar 13 employees over to work on BioShock. One person involved with it said "The issue is that Parkside's not ready for lots of people. They're trying to be really smart about figuring out what the core thing is. They're careful about not falling into the same problem every studio has, where they have too many people and nothing for them to do." It seems like it was a source of tension within Hangar 13, everyone competing to get a chance to work on BioShock.

Kotaku's piece is well worth a read. It provides the context for February's layoffs at Hangar 13, how the development team was perfectly aware of all of Mafia III's shortcomings, the realities of staffing a studio in San Francisco, and the prototypes that it has worked on over the past year. It's all quite sobering. And the possibility of a new BioShock is about the only feel-good angle out of this whole saga -- even if that doesn't really have much to do with Hangar 13 at all.

News:: Review: Blumhouse's Truth or Dare

I'm not sure if it was hubris or clarity that led Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, to plaster the studio name before its new movie Blumhouse's Truth or Dare. There have been a plethora of other horror films within the past five years(!) with the same title so it could just be they wanted to tell us all that this one was the one from the people who brought us Get Out. Whatever the reason they should take it off as fast as possible.

Sure, Blumhouse is known for its quick and dirty horror production, that's pushed out a ton of hits ranging in quality from classics to crummy, but none of those crappy films had the studio's name boldly emblazoned in front of it. And Blumhouse's Truth or Dare might just be the crappiest of their crappy movies, but now every time someone writes about it the studios name will be tarnished.

News:: Have buckets of fun with Splatoon 2's Tri-Slosher Nouveau today

The Tri-Slosher Nouveau is preparing to make a helluva mess in Nintendo's arena shooter Splatoon 2, as the somewhat undignifed weapon is added to the game's arsenal today.

The Tri-Slosher Nouveau is, of course, a variant on the original Tri-Slosher. While many other weapons in the game are subverted takes on water-guns, hosepipes and even military weaponry, the Tri-Slosher is basically a bucket, nothing more or less. It has a messy, wide spread and is capable of taking down an opponent in two good "sloshes".

The Nouveau variant comes equipped with a Splat Bomb sub and an Ink Storm special. As usual it will go live this evening in North America, with Europe and Japan to follow early tomorrow morning. Have a good weekend, Squid-kids!

News:: ‘Floor Kids’ is Kid Koala’s video game tribute to breakdancing

Kid Koala is not a game developer. Born Eric San, the Canadian DJ and turntablist has been spinning records and making beats since he was 12. Over the past three decades, he's DJ'd breakdancing battles and worked with legends of the electronic music scene like Amon Tobin. He's also scored films, written graphic novels and even collaborated with Mike Patton of Faith No More and Dan the Automator on an album of "love" songs. But he is not a game developer. Like many, he grew up playing Super Mario Bros., and back then if you'd told him one day he'd work with Nintendo, he'd never have believed you.

His latest project is Floor Kids, a rhythm game that's a celebration of breakdancing culture. It's something he worked on, one way or another, for over ten years. The game was released in January for Nintendo Switch as part of the company's "Nindies" program. When San and creative partner Jonathan Ng were first approached by Nintendo, neither had any idea what a Switch was, but agreed anyway. "Nintendo was like some company from outer space that created this awesome game," he said. "It was a no-brainer for me." Now, the game is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One very soon.

News:: Sea of Thieves update plans include more mechanics, a new AI threat, and weekly events

Rare has begun detailing its post-release support for Sea of Thieves. First up is a content update called The Hungering Deep, which adds "a new AI threat" for crews to "discover and defeat as part of a unique event." That'll arrive in May, followed by weekly events with "new ways to play."

"In the summer months, we'll debut two more content updates with Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a perilous new part of the world to explore. Similarly to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim."

The studio noted that due to shifting priorities, it's putting two previously discussed elements -- pets and ship captaincy -- on the back burner. "Expect our plans to continue to be fluid," Rare said.

The developer also highlighted its general approach to expanding Sea of Thieves. When adding content, Rare wants to bring players together in interesting ways, enrich the world, give players new ways to play, provide a variety of goals and rewards, and broaden the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond.

It's worth watching the video for more specificity, including talk of cursed cannonballs and hard-to-reach skeleton thrones. I think Rare is on the right track with its plans, it just comes down to execution.

News:: Netflix and Cannes are breaking up

At this point, the saga between Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival feels like a relationship gone sour. The honeymoon phase has passed, and while the latter wants things to stay the same, the former wants to try something new and exciting. Cannes fired out an ultimatum, and now Netflix is refusing to bend.

After Cannes' artistic director Thierry Fremaux implemented a rule directly aimed at Netflix surrounding competition for the Palme d'Or, the streaming company has now decided that they won't show any films at Cannes, competition or otherwise. In an interview with Variety, content officer Ted Sarandos explained that the message has been received loud and clear, and it no longer makes sense for Netflix to attend the festival:

“We want our films to be on fair ground with every other filmmaker. There’s a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They’ve set the tone. I don’t think it would be good for us to be there.”

The rule in question requires Palme d'Or participants to release their films theatrically in France, which Netflix was initially open to. The issue is that films released in this fashion in France cannot appear on SVoD (Subscription Video on Demand) for 36 months after its release for French subscribers. For comparison's sake, the timeline for both physical and paid Video on Demand is four months, pay TV is 10 months, and free TV is available after 22 months. This does not coincide with the Netflix model.

The current stalemate is prime evidence of the modernization of the movie watching experience versus the old guard remonstrating "the right way" to experience a film. Sarandos touches on this topic in his closing remarks while also speculating a possible change to the rule in the future. And, as with any good breakup, fires a shot back at the festival and punctuates his point with two words that mean so much more:

"We hope that they do change the rules. We hope that they modernize. But we will continue to support all films and all filmmakers. We encourage Cannes to rejoin the world cinema community and welcome them back. Thierry had said in his comments when he announced his change that the history of the Internet and the history of Cannes are two different things. Of course they are two different things. But we are choosing to be about the future of cinema. If Cannes is choosing to be stuck in the history of cinema, that’s fine."

News:: Atlus release cool animated openings for Persona Dancing titles

It's Friday, which means its time for Atlus to taunt Western fans with more ace videos from upcoming rhythm-action titles Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night.

This week, instead of character trailers, the publisher has released the animated intro movies from both games, so we get to see a whole bevy of great characters gather to shake what their matriarchal contributor gave to them. All the famous faces are here: Mitsuru, Makoto, robot-lady, little boy, Makoto, angry guy and creature.

Does this mean we have seen all of the character trailers for these two titles? Maybe. But with over a month to go before the games' Japanese launch, there's still time to pull some more surprises out of the neon-stained bag.

Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita. A box set, which includes Persona 4: Dancing All Night, will also be available.

News:: Celebrate Friday the 13th with a game that goes back in time to 2010-era Destructoid

For the past three or four years I've been helping game studio Secret Base to connect with other people in the industry while offering general PR advice for Streets of Red: Devil's Deluxe, which just released on PS4 and Switch yesterday.

I've done this work for free, mostly because I like the game, but also because it features my old Dtoid Show colleague Anthony Carboni as a playable character, and I absolutely love seeing my friends in video games. That's why I asked Jim Sterling to be a boss for this enhanced console port, Devil's Dare, and also for him to take a few minutes to record his voice for the game. After years of putting me in compromising positions on our various podcasts, I didn't think he would say no. Thankfully, I was right.

That's just the tip of the iceberg regarding what makes Streets of Red special. I'm in no position to fairly review it, seeing as I influenced at least some of the content, but I still think I can safely recommend the game to anyone who's a fan of 2010-era Dtoid. Streets of Red feels like that period of our site's history, but in beat 'em up form. Also, its about 20% off for a limited time, so if you're at all optimistic about it, then now's the time to pick it up.

News:: Norse-centric Jotun is coming to Switch later this month

Thunder Lotus Games was onto something as soon as they released the art for Jotun. Set to a Norse mythology backdrop with action puzzle framing, Jotun is a gorgeous hand-drawn adventure. With a short five hour-ish runtime it's a nice way to spend an afternoon -- and so far since 2015 its arrived on the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U platforms.

Thunder Lotus is making room for one more though, as they've just announced that the Switch edition will launch on April 27. Will Dube, president of Thunder Lotus, explains that the team was thrilled to work on a portable device, and that the Switch felt like a natural fit for Jotun.

News:: Sega tweet reminder for their 'Special Announcement' coming this weekend at Fes 2018

Sega have tweeted out a reminder that they have a "special announcement" coming this weekend, live from their Fes event, held this weekend in Akihabra, Tokyo.

The Sega Fes 2018 event itself will feature a celebration of their long history within the industry. Q&A panels, arcades, a museum of merchandise, consoles and marketing materials, all dedicated to the company that has been around for just shy of sixty years.

A new game? A new console? or just another dang Sonic title? Whatever it is, Sega are adamant that you want to hear it. The tweet states that Sega fans DO NOT want to miss the news, capital letters and everything. But I suppose when you're announcing Virtua Fighter 6, it is a big deal...

News:: New Monster Hunter: World schedule dates Devil May Cry and Mega Man quests

Capcom have released a new quest schedule for their smash hit adventure title Monster Hunter: World. The lineup includes fun new crossover quests featuring gear based on their Mega Man and Devil May Cry franchises.

The Mega Man event, A Rush of Blood, begins today and can be undertaken by hunters of rank 13 and over. Completing the grinds will award your Palico with armour based on the Blue Bomber himself. It looks amusinglyhilariously out of place and a lot of fun.

The second quest, Code: Red, doesn't start until April 27, but will award all players who topple said challenge with Dante's Alpha armour and a Switch-Axe variant, akin to the stylish hero's trademark sword.

Finally, an eight-star challenge against the perilous Nergigante also goes live today. You can download full details and rewards on all the above challenges and more right here. Incidentally, for those of you still enjoying the game's current Spring Blossom event, you still have about a week to take part in the festivities, before it draws to a close April 19.

Monster Hunter: World is available now on PS4 and Xbox One. A PC edition is coming later this year.

News:: Ubisoft sheds light on why they had to pull multiple Call of Juarez games from sale

The Call of Juarez series has a pretty dedicated following, but sadly new fans are going to have trouble getting into a few of the newest entries if they're looking to go digital. Several weeks ago Ubisoft pulled Call of Juarez Gunslinger and The Cartel from every marketplace, both on consoles and PC.

The reason for the pull is simple, says Ubisoft -- they no longer have the rights to them. Speaking to Game Informer, Ubisoft noted: "Per the terms of agreement, Call of Juarez The Cartel and Call of Juarez Gunslinger licensing/publishing rights have reverted back to Techland, while others remain active with Ubisoft. This is why a few titles have recently been removed from Steam, but it is our understanding that Techland is working to bring those titles back, so please feel free to reach out to Techland regarding status.”

We've reached out to Techland for comment to see if Ubisoft was correct, and if the games will eventually make their way back on the various marketplaces they were pulled from.

News:: Review: Rampage

When you're a child of four, you do everything with your brothers and sisters. You play together, you eat together, you even get haircuts together. And, if one of you is due for a dentist appointment, all of you are. There needs to be an order behind the madness.

I mention this because someone at my dentist office - I don't know who - set up an N64 in the waiting area for kids. There were only two games for it, Pokémon Snap and Rampage World Tour. 6-year-old me loved Rampage; the wholesale destruction of buildingsthe murder of innocent civilians - it was perfect. At home, I could enjoy Banjo Kazooie but it was nothing like Rampage. Banjo collected puzzle pieces and Jinjos. George, Lizzie and Ralph ate people.

Little did I know that there would be a Rampage movie at some point. Little did anyone. I wonder what 6-year-old Drew would've thought of Rampage.

Well, I have the next best thing. I know what adult Drew thinks of Rampage. It's routine.

Rampage
Director: Brad Peyton
Rated: PG-13
Release Date: April 12, 2018

Rampage stars actual boulder Dwayne Johnson as Davis Okoye, a primatologist who's formed a fraternal bond with George, an albino gorilla that Okoye has looked after since infancy. When George is inadvertently exposed to a genetic-altering substance, things start to change. George starts to grow, and Okoye starts to worry for his gorilla-bro. As the situation soon gets too big (heh) for Okoye to handle, he utilizes the help of Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to save George, as he's not the only creature that's grown as big as a building recently.

The plot isn't why anyone is seeing Rampage. People want to see things get destroyed by big monsters. With any luck, buildings will go down in such a cavalier and entertaining manner that it'll be worth the price of admission. You know what? Those people are right. Rampage isn't concerned with the lives of the people in the city, it focuses in on the spectacle of big monsters tearing through a metropolis in a cartoonish, well, rampage. Thank god! I was concerned that there wouldn't be any of that. Rest assured, Rampage sure does rampage.
