Rare has begun detailing its post-release support for Sea of Thieves. First up is a content update called The Hungering Deep, which adds "a new AI threat" for crews to "discover and defeat as part of a unique event." That'll arrive in May, followed by weekly events with "new ways to play."
"In the summer months, we'll debut two more content updates with Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a perilous new part of the world to explore. Similarly to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim."
The studio noted that due to shifting priorities, it's putting two previously discussed elements -- pets and ship captaincy -- on the back burner. "Expect our plans to continue to be fluid," Rare said.
The developer also highlighted its general approach to expanding Sea of Thieves. When adding content, Rare wants to bring players together in interesting ways, enrich the world, give players new ways to play, provide a variety of goals and rewards, and broaden the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond.
It's worth watching the video for more specificity, including talk of cursed cannonballs and hard-to-reach skeleton thrones. I think Rare is on the right track with its plans, it just comes down to execution.
