News::PS4 will release on November 15 in North America
Sony's gamescom press conference is over now, but they saved a key nugget of information for the very end. Just before closing out, Sony confirmed earlier PlayStation 4 pricing information, added that the console would launch in 32 countries, and finally dropped the release dates: November 15 in North America, and November 29 in Europe.
Mark your calendars, people! The full force of the next generation of game consoles is almost upon us.

News::Upgrade from PS3 to PS4, save on select games
When you buy blockbuster games like Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV, or Watch Dogs on PlayStation 3 and decide that you want to own them again but on PS4 -- who are you people? -- you'll be able to save some money.
For a limited time, "upgrading" to next-gen by purchasing the digital versions of any of these four games will earn you a "significantly discounted price," according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House. It'd have to be pretty darn significant for me to ever consider something like this, but I can see a certain type of gamer getting value out of the offer.

News::Twitch support announced for PlayStation 4
Twitch was locked in for Xbox One, and now the streaming service has also been confirmed for PlayStation 4. What's that mean, exactly? After hitting the DualShock 4's Share button, you'll be able to broadcast game footage out to your Twitch channel.
And if you're more into watching others stream, that's part of the support as well. Both viewing broadcasts and creating your own will be free for all users. Sony also revealed that some 20 video services are planned for the system, and Music Unlimited will see improvements. The "faster, simpler, better" service will allow you to have music going in the background while playing games.

News::Playroom will be pre-installed on all PlayStation 4s
Sony's EyeToy support seemed to wane as the PlayStation 3 aged, but armed with the new features in the PlayStation 4's controller, it looks like the camera will be attempting a comeback, hoping to stay more relevant than its predecessor.
The first piece of software that will utilize a lot of the new features is Playroom, which looks similar to Double Fine Happy Action Theater . Robots will electrocute your friends (virtually) before you play a sort of motion-based Pong clone. Good news for those interested in some stupid fun but not enough to pay for it: Playroom will be pre-loaded onto all PlayStation 4 consoles.

News::Rime looks like Ico mixed with Wind Waker
Well, this certaintly came out of nowhere! Developer Tequila Works' newest project has been unveiled, and it's an open world adventure for the PlayStation 4. Titled simply as Rime, it distinctly reminds me of Ico mixed with a bit of Wind Waker for good measure.
After the wasted potential that was Deadlight , I'm very cautious of Tequila Works. Even still, I'll be right there at day one trying it out, because damn if it doesn't look amazing.

News::Lords of the Fallen debut: Smash monsters with a hammer
I forgot Lords of the Fallen was a thing at this recent E3 and announced a month earlier for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Maybe because it didn't get any sort of snazzy trailer, like this crazy, CG debut trailer. A man with a giant hammer clones himself, uses some sort of magic on a giant monster, and yells at the gods.
City Interactive doesn't have the most stellar track record, but it seems the developer is swinging for the big leagues with Lords of the Fallen. Tomasz Gop, who was the senior producer on The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings , will be heading up development and our E3 preview compared the slice we were shown rather favorably to From Software's Dark Souls.
Battles are often with a few enemies and focus on skill rather than button mashing. Not too many of those around so it's nice to see another. From the game's website:
A challenge in games can be measured with the difference between randomness and skill. Our goal is to make a game that rewards players for doing what it takes to cross that gap. A game where learning skills and ultimately mastering them is the basis of fun and entertainment.
Sounds enough to at least get me interested in the semi-standard-looking action-RPG.

News::Magicka devs' Helldivers announced for PS3, PS4, Vita
The new game from Magicka maker Arrowhead Game Studios was announced during Sony's gamescom presser and it's a step in a different direction. While Helldivers is still very much focused on cooperative play, this title is actually a squad-based overhead shooter.
Helldivers will be cross-platform and has been announced for PlayStation 3, PS4, and PS Vita. Reminds me of Starship Troopers, which is a great thing to remind me of. The only good bug is a dead bug, as they say. Better take friends.

News::Hotline Miami 2 coming to Sony platforms next year
Hotline Miami was one of last year's surprise hits, and since its release, fans have been clamoring for a sequel. We've known for a while now that one was coming, and that it will play off said fervor.
Hotline Miami 2 has been shaping up pretty nicely, and it looks like the title won't be limited to PC. At gamescom today, Sony announced that Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita some time next year.

News::Rogue Legacy coming to PlayStation 4 and Vita next year
Cellar Door Games' much-loved roguelike Rogue Legacy is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita next year. The game released earlier this year on PC, but Sony is getting the console exclusivity. People keep pitching the game to me in a variety of ways, like saying it's the best of Castlevania.
I've been down for a while, maybe this is my in. I don't know about you, but I think the Vita is the absolute perfect platform for such a game. I've been playing Dragon's Crown compulsively on the thing.
No word yet on if it's cross buy.

News::N++ will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive this winter
At Sony's gamescom press conference, senior business development manager at SCEE Shahid Ahmad brought word that N++ will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 when it releases this winter. This was just one of a handful of independent titles announced for Sony systems and although we don't have too much to go on, a few details were discussed.
N++ will have new multiplayer modes, thousands of levels, and the ability to create, share, and compete on endless levels of your own creation. I need to redownload my copy of N+ (pictured above) and start building up that muscle memory again.

News::Starbound, Fez, and Velocity 2 coming to Vita and PS4
During today's Sony conference it was announced that several new indie titles would be coming to both the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 4, including the upcoming indie action-platformer Starbound, the critically-acclaimed Fez, and the sequel to FuturLab's 2012 shoot'em up Velocity 2.
With any luck, these titles in addition to the recent announcement of Borderlands 2 , will help to bolster the handheld's sparse library, while giving potential consumers even more of a reason to pick up Sony's next-gen console.

News::Murasaki Baby looks freakishly disturbing
If you're looking to play some more original games on your Vita, Sony is attempting to accommodate that, amidst a sea of ports. One such original game is the newly announced Murasaki Baby from the Italian studio Ovosonico, which looks like the freakish spawn of Limbo and Invader Zim.
Sony says that games like Murasaki Baby will ensure that they have a platform create new and innovative titles on a consistent basis. Although it was tough to tell what the game is even about, it does look intriguing!

News::Sony to drop PlayStation Vita price to $200
We've seen various retailers drop both the Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi PlayStation Vita models down to $200 recently. It's time, Sony. We're ready for you to introduce that coveted price drop across the board. And Sony is ready as well: a price drop down to $199.99 / €199.99 is happening in the United States and Europe, respectively, as of tomorrow.
Perhaps even more exciting than that, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan promised "significant reductions" in the prices of memory cards for the system. It's about time!
Thanks to Sony's indie push, the portable is getting quite a lot of quality games, even if many of them aren't exclusive. Whatever. It's still a well-made device, one that many of us desperately want to succeed. Let's hope the new pricing is a big step forward.

News::Sony announces free-to-play LittleBigPlanet Hub for PS3
LittleBigPlanet Hub is a free-to-play version of MediaMolecule's creative PS3 platformer. The video at Sony's gamescom conference talked about multiplayer, outfits, and the whole creative suite people have some to expect out of LittleBigPlanet. It seems there will also be some content you can purchase.
LittleBigPlanet really started the culture of sharing and user-generated content at Sony, a culture that trickled into things like inFamous 2. Having a free-to-play version of LittleBigPlanet is a nice way to promote longevity of the PS3 and give a really neat tool/game to a lot of people -- I'm thinking young kids in particular -- that aren't on the cutting edge of "next gen."
Plus Sackboy is so cute.

News::Gran Turismo 6 launches worldwide on December 6
December 6, 2013. That's the global launch date that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan gave for Gran Turismo 6 during the company's gamescom press conference after showing a bizarre video about concept cars and confirming that this is still only arriving on PS3.
There was also confirmation of the Gran Turismo feature film, which series creator Kazunori Yamauchi and Sony Pictures are working on. The hope is for the movie to capture the "adrenaline of the racing world" with a "human dimension inspired by GT Academy."

News::First look at Ubisoft's Kinect game Fighter Within
I have a hard time seeing this ending any other way than "badly," but props for trying, I suppose. Ubisoft has announced an Xbox One launch title called Fighter Within that looks halfway decent until you hear that, yes, it's a Kinect game. A motion-controlled fighter with 1:1 movement tracking -- is this something we even want? I'm genuinely curious.
"Fighter Within embodies the next generation of fighting games. Kicks, punches, counters, throws, combos, special moves, everything you expect from a fighting game is there, powered by jaw-dropping next-gen graphics. The game's 'in your face' animations, real-time wounds, sweat and facial impacts propel players into the heart of the fight."
Wish we would've gotten to see actual gameplay.

News::Is that you, EA? 24-hour refunds on Origin games
In a surprisingly progressive move, Electronic Arts will offer full refunds on game downloads for Windows or Mac that are purchased on its distribution platform Origin. What's the catch? There isn't one, really. You just have to request the refund in the first 24 hours after launching the game, within seven days after the original purchase, or within the first seven days after the title's release date if you pre-ordered -- whichever of these happens first.
"We hope every game you play on Origin will meet this high bar, and we're happy to say that starting today, we can guarantee that we'll make things right if you decide the game you just bought didn't live up to your expectations."
The fine print is over here. The refund policy extends to full EA games only, so DLC and the like aren't covered. I'm hoping this catches on with third-party companies and other digital distributors; the inability to get refunds is one of my last remaining concerns with going purely digital.

The Internet demanded it and now Ubisoft is delivering: Tom Clancy's The Division will be getting a PC version in addition to the previously announced PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. There's also a new trailer out of gamescom that demonstrates the game's mobile companion app. Airstrikes are apparently a tap of the finger away.
The player-versus-player component sounds both scary and exciting, a potentially winning combo and a terrific fit for the tone of the game. I've got higher hopes for The Division than probably any of Ubisoft's other next-gen efforts.
