News:: Insomniac wants to make a Sunset Overdrive sequel, but it needs a publisher

Insomniac seems like an awfully busy studio. In 2016, it released a new Ratchet & Clank, the GameStop-published Song of the Deep, and three Oculus games. Currently, it's working on the most high-profile Spider-Man title in at least a decade.

Despite having a lot on its plate over the past few years, Insomniac would be happy to revisit one of its most beloved titles. There's a catch, though. Insomniac needs someone to fund it.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Insomniac says that it'd "love to" make a Sunset Overdrive sequel, but that the studio "need(s) to find a publisher." This is purely conjecture, but that statement makes it sound as if Microsoft doesn't hold any sort of publishing rights for a second game.

However, (and again, this is just armchair analysis) the fact that Xbox isn't jumping to fund another Sunset Overdrive probably speaks to how well the first one sold. It seems that this is the sort of thing that a platform-holder like Microsoft would want in its portfolio of exclusives -- especially if a lot of the investment in tech could be carried over from the first project. But, according to this tweet, no one has bit yet.

This isn't the first time that Insomniac has shown a willingness to make more Sunset Overdrive. Back in February, studio president Ted Price gave an interview that basically amounted to "nothing to report now, but it's always on our minds." There technically isn't any good news yet, but Insomniac appears to really want more Sunset Overdrive. In a way, that in itself is good news.

News:: PlayStation Network has fresh deals for Halloween

We're in the second and final week of Sony's Sale of the Dead on PlayStation Network.

If you felt the initial batch had notable omissions, I agree! Namely, Until Dawn. The cinematic horror adventure game is down to $5.99 with PlayStation Plus and $7.99 without. I'll also point to The Evil Within ($9.99 with PS Plus, $11.99 without) on account of the sequel just releasing and it being good.

Last week's deals are still in effect, so if you aren't feeling any of these, consult that original list. (And, beyond that, NIS America is currently holding its own sale on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita games.)

News:: Schooled: Learning English with Silent Hill

[How many of us are willing to go out of our way to learn a new language just to enjoy our favorite hobby? For many outside of primarily English-speaking countries, it can be less of an option and more of a necessity if you want to enjoy the fruits of things originating in or translated to English. Rad Party God tells his tale of how video games - especially Silent Hill - helped him to learn a new language, a skill he employs daily right here on Dtoid! This is part of last month's Bloggers Wanted prompt, but also serves the double purpose of having a spooky theme, so enjoy it in the final days leading up to Halloween! - Wes]

By now, my nationality is no secret to most of the regulars here on Dtoid; heck, it's in the first paragraph of my bio within my profile. Suffice to say, English is not my first language. In my almost thirty years of my life, I've never left my country even once and yet, here I am, communicating with you fine folks and shitposting sharing my thoughts and opinions with quite a diverse range of English-speaking people.

News:: Hold on, Breath of the Wild lets you do that?!

Making fantastic use of the newly-added video capture feature on Nintendo Switch, Twitter user Daniel Otaigbe has shown off his "special move" in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Or, as our own Darren Nakamura puts it, "a controllable lawnmower of death."

Before you get any bright ideas, this Magnesis Rune-powered boomerang attack "stops spinning after a short amount of time," according to Otaigbe. (Not that it's any less impressive.) I'm continually amazed by the creative feats players are able to think of and pull off in this game.

Speaking of, this is a very inconvenient time to suddenly want to get back into Breath of the Wild.

News:: Resident Evil 2 board game completes crowd-funding

Steamforged Games, who last month launched a Kickstarter for a board game based on Capcom's 1998 classic, Resident Evil 2, have closed their fundraiser, having made a staggering £800,561 (a little over a million dollars) from around 7,500 backers.

The game's original goal was £150,000, which it made within an hour of opening its doors to backer donations. The final total covers all of the game's stretch goals, including multiple new exclusive playing pieces and weapon cards.

Steamforged, who also released a board game based on Dark Souls, have said that Resident Evil 2 will see players take their favourite characters into the zombie-infested Raccoon City, featuring miniatures, locations and mechanics that "captures the essence of the much-loved original video games while offering new twists and turns".

News:: A Logan spinoff script is in the works for Dafne Keen's Laura

Logan might have spelled the end of the road for one of its stars, but it looks like it is indeed only the beginning for another. Director James Mangold has confirmed that a script centering on Dafne Keen's Laura, also known as X-23, is in the works.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Mangold, producer Hutch Parker, and star Hugh Jackman about the spinoff while reflecting on the success of Logan, including potential awards consideration for the film and Patrick Stewart's portrayal of a weakened yet still spirited Professor X.

News:: Supermassive's crime thriller Hidden Agenda hits PS4 today

Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games has a new story-based adventure title out today. Does Hidden Agenda ring any bells? It first made the rounds back at E3 as part of PlayLink, Sony's social gaming initiative that incorporates smartphones and tablets as controllers. The idea is to encourage participation from folks who don't normally get into traditional multiplayer games on PS4.

A few more PlayLink titles released today including Knowledge is Power, a trivia game, and Singstar Celebration, which lets you sing into your smartphone. But for me, Hidden Agenda is and has always been the most intriguing part of the whole program. It's an up-to-six-player crime thriller in which you'll make decisions that can shift the story and potentially work against your pals in secret.

Also, the plot centers around a killer called "The Trapper." The Trapper. I kinda love that.

Knowledge is Power, Singstar, and Hidden Agenda are $20 a piece.

News:: Slayaway Camp is the Halloween game you didn't know you needed

"Love letter" is in the pantheon of meaningless and/or trite words and phrases to avoid as a games writer. It's up there with "visceral," "fans of the genre," and "_____ fans, rejoice!" All of those have lost impact over time, through years and years of overuse. They're neutered words.

But damnit, I'm having a tough time coming up with a more appropriate phrase for Slayaway Camp. It's an honest-to-god love letter to campy slasher flicks. Developer Blue Wizard clearly understands the source material and what makes those movies work. Then it subverts the tone while still maintaining all the fun schlock.

Slayaway Camp isn't your traditional Halloween game. It doesn't aim to scare like Friday the 13th and Outlast 2 and Until Dawn. Instead, its sights are set on horror cliches by killing people in the dumbest ways possible. Make the camp counselors run into a hole; send the panicked office drone scurrying into an electrical fence.

News:: Persona 5 now has an 'Ultimate Edition' and it's $125

$125? Come again?!

While it's true that Atlus is offering an Ultimate Edition of Persona 5 on PlayStation Network, it's essentially just a DLC bundling for the sake of convenience; this isn't equivalent to those "game of the year" editions we see pop up after a notable release has been sitting on store shelves for a while.

Persona 5: Ultimate Edition, which is $125 on PS4 and $115 on PS3, includes:

  • Persona 5
  • All Personas

  • New Difficulty Level Challenge
  • Skill Card Set

Atlus has also bundled up the costumes for $60:

  • Persona 4: Dancing All Night Costume & BGM Special Set

  • Persona 5 Persona 20th Anniversary Logo
  • Persona 5 Swimsuit Costume Set
  • Phantom Thieves Logo Morgana Car Sticker
  • Regular Clothes & School Uniforms Set
  • Shin Megami Tensei if... Costume & BGM Special Set
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV Costume & BGM Special Set
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Costume & BGM Special Set

As well as the Personas for $20:

News:: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Memory coming West next January

After announcing a December 14 release in Japan, I'm glad we don't have to wait that much longer for Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker's Story (who knows where that damn colon goes) to hit the West.

Hacker's Memory hits the Americas and Europe January 19, and those who pre-order gain access to extra Digimon (Omnimon NX, Sistermon Ciel and Blanc, Leopardmon NX, and Crusadermon NX) and extra costumes (V. Uchida Costume, Inoden School Attire, Summer Camp T-Shirt, and Beelzebumon Emblem T-Shirt).

News:: South Park: The Fractured But Whole free trial available now on consoles

PS4 and Xbox One owners can play a whole hour of Ubisoft's RPG-sequel South Park: The Fractured But Whole for free, via a trial that launched today on both consoles.

Playing the trial gives you a full sixty minutes to run around the complete version of the game, which recently received a very positive review from our own Brett Makedonski. At the end of the trial, players opting to purchase the game will obviously see their progress thus far carry over into the full release.

Unfortunately this trial has not been made available to PC players, but is good to go right now on PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: Review: Campfire Cooking

Camping sucks. It does, it really does. I’m out there, sleeping on the ground, surrounded by trees, insects, and bears all plotting to kill me in my sleeping bag. I have to hang food from a tree so I don’t starve the next day, clean myself in a public shower, and worst of all, make small talk with people who think spending a weekend away from work just one campsite over is a good use of their free time. Sure, it’s nice to get away from the god-awful air quality and noise of the city, and nature is goddamn beautiful to see in person, but I’ll take my nice warm bed in my nice warm room over a tiny tent in some rocky KOA any day. Or at the very least, a nice bed in a sleeper camper.

The only thing camping has over my day to day life is s’mores. I love those sweet little bastards. Why don’t I make them more often? A toasted marshmallow is one of life’s greatest pleasures and, as I learned this past weekend, it can make for one clever puzzle game.

News:: Hitman is getting a 'Game of the Year' edition with an extra mini-campaign

IO Interactive's latest Hitman game (simply titled Hitman) was fairly well received last year. Despite it having a pointless online requirement and being chopped into different episodes, fans took to the game and ended up making it a cult success. That wasn't enough to stop Square Enix from selling IO, but the company has rebounded and even continued to update their rebooted assassin series.

Not willing to rest on their laurels, IO Interactive has announced that Hitman: Game of the Year Edition will be coming next month. This new version, which includes the entirety of Season One, will also see the release of the "Patient Zero" mini-campaign and a bunch of extra costumes and "Escalation" contract missions.

Sadly, existing owners of Hitman will need to pay an extra $20 for the GOTY upgrade, but new players will be able to grab everything for $60 on November 7. If you don't want to upgrade, then that is fine; Hitman will also be receiving a free update that tweaks the UI, adds new "Contracts" missions and even adds support for the Xbox One X.

News:: Injustice 2 coming to PC this fall

Warner Bros. may not have the best track record when it comes to PC versions of their big releases, but here's hoping it'll be different this time. Ported by QLOC, the team behind the PC version of Mortal Kombat XL, Injustice 2 will hit Steam and Microsoft Windows this Fall.

Starting tomorrow, October 25, Steam users will be able to try its open beta, so hopefully any issues can be caught before the full release. Anything to make it less rocky will be appreciated, and that'll mean more folks will enjoy my favorite fighter this year.

News:: Bungie's plan is to drop patches on PC and consoles simultaneously

Bungie seems to be doing right by the PC edition of Destiny 2, as it will have full parity with the console versions.

So what does that mean exactly? Well, they'll seemingly be updating PC and consoles at the same time, so no audience is left out in the cold. That said, they do have the ability to balance each platform differently -- a process Blizzard currently employs for Overwatch. PC players will just have to deal with one week of being left out of the Leviathan raid is all.

Likewise, the PC version could get some unique tweaks if needed, like if the community requests a UI or settings change. What I'm really curious about is how quickly the PC shooter pro crowd will saturate everything Destiny 2 has to offer.

News:: Review: The Mummy Demastered

I haven't seen this year's reboot of The Mummy and barring a long international flight or a drunken impulse rental on Amazon, I never will. The original Brendan Fraser-led Mummy movies? Sure! You know I'm down. But I'm not at all invested in this new resurgence or Universal's plans for a Dark Universe.

Thankfully, with respect to The Mummy Demastered, none of that matters. WayForward took the property and adapted it into a game that stands on its own. Dig Castlevania? You should dig this.

News:: New Google Assistant skills reinvent family game night

There's no question that kids like talking to smart speakers, and Google knows it. As promised, the search firm is adding over 50 child-oriented activities to Google Assistant to make sure your Home speaker (or really, any Assistant-capable device) can entertain the younger crowd. It can orchestrate trivia games, start a round of musical chairs, tell a story or even help with homework. Not surprisingly, this includes a few branded experiences: you can ask the Assistant "what's my Justice League superhero?" or tell it to "play Mickey Mouse Adventure."

News:: Shin Megami Tensei V is coming to Switch because Atlus wants people to use TV and handheld mode

We knew it was coming, but it doesn't make the fact that Shin Megami Tensei V is exclusive to the Switch (for now) any less surprising. Atlus seems to be putting a lot of faith into the system, but due to some recent information following its reveal, we now have a better look at why they chose it.

Speaking to Famitsu, the game's director (who previously handled SMT IV) explained that on the Switch, players can "enjoy the game's story in HD on their TVs, and grind to level up and fuse demons in portable mode in the comfort of your bed."

I mean, he isn't wrong! I've been playing a ton of Switch games just like that, constantly taking the system out of the dock and putting it back in. And given how much grinding the average SMT game has, I think he's onto something.

In other news, this iteration is going to be "characteristic of the troubled times," will feature the iconic Shinagawa Station, and it'll be the first game from Atlus in Unreal Engine 4.

News:: Arc System Works announces World End Syndrome with unsettling website

Arc System Works have launched a website that previously teased a new game, but has since been announced as World End Syndrome. The site features a countdown clock scheduled to end in two day's time, but the studio already announced it ahead of time on PS4, Vita, and Switch, and it's a "love adventure game" due out in 2018.

The site, titled "Let’s peek quietly into the Classroom after School", features a sliding door that can be clicked on to reveal the edge of an image. When I clicked on it, I saw what I personally thought looked like a girl's knee in a thigh-high sock, but, I don't know, you might see something else.

According to Gematsu, the site's description translates to "A classroom after school that no one should be inside. Beyond the door shut away by the evening sun, is there the premonition of a new encounter…?”

The mystery of the site, as well as the strange sound playing in the background, does give it a creepy air of intrigue. I guess we'll all find out what awaits in the classroom when the clock counts down to its Thursday deadline.

News:: The actual Majora's Mask is one of the most hauntingly beautiful objects in gaming

Although it's a little more obscure than say, a Pac-Man logo, Zelda's Majora's Mask is recognized by quite a lot of people, even if they aren't into the series. It came out at a perfect period when everyone was high on Ocarina of Time, and polarized that very audience with a more somber and frantic tone.

A decade plus and a 3DS remake later, some of those people have recognized its achievements, and the mask itself remains iconic. That's partly why this painting from Anilxe is so mesmerizing -- those of us who have played Majora know the significance of the mask and why it seems to pierce our very souls.

Even if you're not big on Zelda in general, it's hard to deny how much it's seeped into pop culture as a whole.

News:: Games are still releasing for Atari Jaguar

If you had asked me what an Atari Jaguar was back in the mid-'90s, a roughly eight-year-old Kevin Mersereau would have probably assumed it was a sports car or maybe even an exotic animal of some sort. There is absolutely no chance whatsoever that I would have guessed a video game console.

Despite the system’s complete lack of success at the time, there are still those who look back fondly on the Atari Jaguar. One of those people, Jeff Minter, was the creator of Tempest 2000 and the recent PolybiusA company called AtariAge, in a move that expresses exactly zero-fucks-given for conventional business strategies, is currently hard at work on re-releasing the games Llamatron: 2112 and Revenge of the Mutant Camels for the long-dead gaming platform with Mr. Minter’s full blessing.

For me, finding out about these two games was somewhat akin to discovering Tongue of the Fatman for the first time. How the fuck did I not know that these already existed?!? They might be the worst games ever made, and I’d still be dying to play them! I’m a total sucker for goofy, nonsensical shit like this. The whole aesthetic just speaks to a deep-rooted part of my subconscious that’s forever stuck in the neon glow of early '90s Nickelodeon cartoons and surrealist Pog art

News:: Nintendo's Switch now supports your old GameCube controllers

Nintendo's latest Switch update is apparently a treasure trove of secrets. In addition to secretly slipping in support for USB headphones, the gaming titan has also bundled in the ability to support GameCube controllers. Yup, you can dig up your old console and use your old friend to play new games... and maybe even old ones, too, if the rumors about a GameCube virtual console ever becomes a reality. Unfortunately, the compatibility isn't that straightforward -- you'll also need to have the USB adapter Nintendo released for the Wii U sometime ago. It adds GameCube controller support to the Wii U, though it only works if you're playing Super Smash Bros.

News:: The 4.0 firmware update on Switch secretly unlocked GameCube controller support

Oh hey, as it turns out the Switch's 4.0 update didn't just add a few extra enhancements and 30-second video capture - there's also hidden support for the Wii U GameCube adapter.

Yeah, that thing, remember when Nintendo dropped a GameCube accessory for the latest Smash because people wanted to use their WaveBirds instead of Pro Controllers? It's still alive and kicking, and not just at Smash 4 Wii U tournaments. Now as of 4.0 you can plug it into the Switch, head to the controller screen, and you're ready to go -- the OS will recognize the GameCube remotes as Joy-Con.

Given that this wasn't in the official patchnotes, I'm not sure if Nintendo is going to put the kibosh on this as fast as they can. At the moment though I appreciate the sheer number of options, including the rad 8Bitdo controllers that emulate the NES and SNES era. Like the Wii U, the Switch's controller game is on point.

News:: Master ninja Zeku and Sports costumes hitting Street Fighter V today

Street Fighter V will go temporarily offline today for maintenance, allowing for the implementation of  Season Two's final DLC character, as well as a meagre handful of DLC outfits.

Zeku, master of Bushinryu and mentor of Final Fight hero Guy, joins the SFV roster, bringing with him a complex fighting style that ultimately makes him two characters in one. Mastering both halves of Zeku's abilities will mean any opposition will have to prepare themselves for a full style shake-up once Zeku pops his V-Trigger.

Also coming to Capcom's fighter today are three new costumes: an equestrian outfit for Cammy, a cute ice-skating ensemble for Kolin, and some Mad Max-inspired gear for Zangief.

Zeku will cost around $6, or 100,000 Itchy & Scratchy money. The new costumes are priced at $4 each.

News:: Even Twitch is getting in on the loot box craze

Loot boxes have been slowly invading different games, so why not also start invading streaming services? In a promotion for Halloween, Twitch is bringing out some special, limited emotes that can potentially be unlocked via a loot box. Nothing screams pseudo-gambling to me like live streaming.

For those unaware of how Twitch actually pays streamers, the company has their own form of currency called bits. People buy bits in different allotments and can then cheer at streamers as a sort of donation. It is a really roundabout way of paying someone, but I guess it works for enough people to not be an issue.

Now, viewers have the option of leveraging their bits for a chance to unlock zombie emotes. On any bit enabled channel, if a viewer cheers in excess of 250 bits in a single cheer (which is roughly $2.50), they'll receive a "Halloween Crate" that contains one of six special emotes. If you collect all six, then you'll unlock a seventh one, because feeding off of the addictive tendencies of people is just so sweet.

Oh, don't worry; bits are on sale for a limited time! You can nab 500 bits for a measly $3.50, so it might only take you $10.50 to get all those icons! It could also take $5,000, but that is neither here nor there.
