News:: ‘Assassin’s Creed’ trailer reveals mysterious Egyptian enemies

We got our first look at Assassin's Creed: Origins at E3 this past summer. The latest installment of the big-budget title from Ubisoft is set to release on all major platforms October 27th, and will feature ancient Roman and Egyptian settings brought to life in 4K (provided you have a console or PC and TV to handle that many pixels). The developer has just released a brand new trailer for the game that reveals a bit more about a shadowy yet powerful enemy, the Order of the Ancients.

News:: Every death in Hotline Miami video bashes your face in with ELO

What constitutes art will be a topic that will be debated until the end of time. Some people say art must make you feel, while others say that it must carry a message that represents the artist. Personally I think true art makes you feel on a deep almost subconscious level. Something that grabs out at you and holds on without making you know why. Games are definitely an art form, take for instance Hotline Miami which stands in defiance of its violent gameplay by never giving you a reason for all the killing except that maybe you just aren't a good person. "You enjoy all the killing" as Liquid Snake would say.

Art also inspires art and here we have a piece of art from Youtube user Livic who has condensed all of the enemy kills in Hotline Miami into a two and a half minute video and threw some Electric Light Orchestra over it.

News:: Runbow is coming to Nintendo Switch next year

13AM Games has announced that their frantic platformer Runbow is coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2018. It will also make an appearance at Tokyo Game Show later this month, where attendees can give its unique color-based gameplay a whirl.

Runbow began as a Wii U exclusive but was eventually ported to PC and Xbox One, with a deluxe handheld version called Runbow Pocket following on the 3DS. The capabilities of the Switch make it a good platform for bringing the fun but somewhat overlooked party game to a larger audience.

News:: Hyakki Castle is a neat twist on first-person dungeon crawlers

Hyakki Castle is one of those games that's strong enough conceptually to grab my attention, even if the execution -- in this case, the 3D art -- might not be all the way there. It's a first-person dungeon crawler that draws from Japanese folklore, an idea I'm very much into, especially on a platform like PC.

You'll put together a crew of humans, oni, tengu, or nekomata to work your way through a haunted castle, taking on familiar yokai and avoiding traps with an end goal of killing the castle's lord.

The game's main talking point is a party-split feature, in which you can separate your party into two groups (two and two, or one and three) either to lure out foes or circumvent traps. Hyakki Castle is real-time, so that should prove uniquely challenging for folks like me who aren't great multitaskers.

You can find more details on the game's Steam page. It's due out at the end of the year.

In case you hadn't already heard, Minecraft is out on the Nintendo 3DS. While having Minecraft on 3DS is pretty awesome it will unfortunately not be getting the Better Together update.

News:: Call of Duty: WWII will have an open PC beta this month

The multiplayer beta for Call of Duty: WWII has come and gone on consoles. Next up? PC!

Sledgehammer will run an open multiplayer beta on Steam from September 29 through October 2. The studio says this is meant to be a stress test and a way to "fine-tune and optimize the PC experience for November." They've also posted the minimum system specs for the beta:

  • OS: Windows 7 64-Bit or later
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 3225 or equivalent
  • RAM: 8 GB RAM
  • HDD: 25 GB HD space
  • Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 @ 2 GB / AMD Radeon HD 7850 @ 2GB or better
  • DirectX: Version 11.0 compatible video card or equivalent
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Sound Card: DirectX Compatible

Keep in mind, these specs won't necessarily be the same in the full game.

I'd be curious to try the new War mode, where you work together as a squad to tackle a series of objectives, but not a whole lot else (other than maybe Zombies) is speaking to me. Here's a trailer from the recent console beta to give you an idea of what to expect from WWII:

News:: They trapped poor Pikachu in this New 2DS XL

In North America, Nintendo is bringing out two fresh New Nintendo 2DS XL models this year. We've got that orange-and-white number coming up fairly soon, on October 6, and then there's also going to be a nifty Poké Ball edition making the rounds on November 3. Japan has us beat, though.

This immediately calls to mind those dogs trapped in wood. Pikachu might look content on the back of the New 2DS XL, but he's pika-pika-ing in agony on the inside.

News:: The Saints ride again with Saints Row: The Third on Xbox One backward compatibility today

It may be my least favorite of the series, but Saints Row: The Third definitely had some fun moments. It was a bold departure in style that has come to define the series' place opposite Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto. Sadly, it cut a bunch of mainstay features from 2 and basically had a campaign that repeated mission beats far too often. Hulk Hogan and Sasha Grey were in it, though, so yay?

Anyway, if you have a fondness for the Saints' third outing, but only have an Xbox One, now you don't need to worry. The game is officially compatible on Microsoft's new console via the glorious backward compatibility service. While this is probably the highest profile game of the bunch, this isn't the only title coming today.

Along with the late THQ's dildo bat simulator, we're also getting Super C, Monopoly Deal, Slender: The Arrival and Undertow on the BC service. If you happen to be in Japan (or have a Japanese Live account), you can also get Virtual-On on your Xbox One, which makes me so excited and mad at the same time. Why can't we have the port of that arcade classic?!

News:: Overwatch's next free weekend starts September 22

It's an early heads up, but Blizzard is holding another free weekend event for Overwatch.

If you're interested, you'll want to set aside some time to play next weekend from September 22 at 11:00am Pacific until September 25 at 11:59pm Pacific. All heroes and maps in Overwatch will be open to free players in Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade. Also, yeah: Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus memberships are needed on the respective consoles; PC players just need a Battle.net account.

We've seen some character reworks and the introduction of Deathmatch since the last one of these trial events, so there's some incentive to check back in if you're still a fence-sitter.

News:: You'd have to be psycho to pass up on Psychonauts for free

The Humble Store is winding down on its end of summer sale and to celebrate, they are giving away Double Fine's classic platformer, Psychonauts, for the next day and a half. While I don't think it's necessarily aged as well as other games from the same era, Psychonauts has a terrific story with great atmosphere and characters that is well worth a playthrough. Getting it for free is basically a no brainer, unless your PC is literally a potato.

The PC port was updated a few years ago to support widescreen resolutions, more modern gamepads and even reduce the difficulty of its most infamous level, the Meat Circus. You can also get a mod that adds 360 controller button prompts so as not to confuse yourself. Really, this is the best version of the game hands down and having it for free is just awesome. Good job, Humble!

News:: Meet Assassin's Creed: Origins' shadowy puppeteers who actually control Egypt

This new trailer for Assassin's Creed: Origins makes one thing abundantly clear: Protagonist Bayek doesn't really know who he'll be fighting. A secret organization called The Order of the Ancients runs Egypt from the shadows. They have the pharaoh in their pocket, effectively controlling everything while remaining unknown.

This is the closest we've come to identifying Origins' true antagonist. Until now, the marketing campaign has nebulously dealt ideas of political dissent and "Something's wrong in ancient Egypt!" It's helpful to be able to associate a face with the chaos (even if that face is concealed by an ornate mask).

The most interesting thing about the relatively-unknown Order of the Ancients is that there's a realistic possibility this is where the Templars originate from. As the trailer notes, this faction "seeks the power of the ancient gods" -- a goal that's awfully similar to the Templars' relentless fascination with the Pieces of Eden. The Templars are always looking to control the population through supernatural means, and this could very well be the first instance of that.

For those who are less interested in Assassin's Creed lore, this trailer has a cinematic bent about it that makes for an entertaining and short watch. Also, there's a plague and some background crucifixion. Hyenas too! Video games need more hyenas.

News:: No, Rotten Tomatoes isn't why we had a bad movie Summer you nerds

There's been a pretty big debate in film media around Rotten Tomatoes scores. Hollywood executives, including notable director of Rush Hour and several Mariah Carey videos Brett Ratner, have pointed their fingers at the review aggregator for one of the worst box office Summers of the past few years with Ratner even claiming it was "the destruction of [their] business."

Claiming low, or "Rotten," aggregate scores will push people away from the masterpieces like Baywatch, Transformers: The Last Knight, or The Emoji Movie, this point of view is arguably out of touch. Because, as many of my fellow critics and moviegoers alike will most likely agree, the answer to a better movie Summer is simple: make better movies.

But regardless of how simple the answer is, the question of whom to blame is a bit more complicated. What exactly is to blame for the fall of the Summer blockbuster? Well, it's apathy.

News:: Hollow Knight's second free DLC is The Grimm Troupe

Team Cherry has detailed its next free content update for Hollow Knight following Hidden Dreams. Befitting its theme, The Grimm Troupe is coming next month with a new quest and a number of other big-ticket items, and you'll be able to reach it "at any point in your Hollow Knight journey."

New Major Quest – Light the Nightmare Lantern and summon the Grimm Troupe to Hallownest, if you dare! Take part in a twisted ritual that stretches the breadth of the kingdom and bestows the player with a powerful new ally.

New Boss Fights – What epic quest is complete without epic show-downs? Get ready to face off against a dark new foe and a twisted scarlet spectre. Who are they? What brings them to Hallownest? We won’t spoil the surprise!

4 New Charms – We're going all out with the quest, but that’s not enough! Your charm range is also expanding, granting unique new aids and abilities. You'll have to discover their powers for yourself, but their appearance may give a few hints.

New Enemies – The arrival of the Troupe doesn't just mean enormous boss encounters, it also brings new smaller (but challenging!) foes to test your nail and spells against. Your Hunter's Journal is going to be overflowing by the time your done!

New Friends – Grimm's clan may appear scary but they aren't all bad. Get ready to befriend a new bunch of weirdos, including one who offers a very special service for players flush with Geo!

New Music – Tying this whole cavalcade together are all new spooky and spine tingling tracks by Christopher Larkin. Get ready to feel the fear!

Map Markers – In a world as big as Hallownest finding your way is the greatest challenge of all, and you’ll now have an extra tool in your cartographic journeys with custom Map Markers! Place them anywhere on your maps to remember a point of interest, a difficult foe or an item just out of reach.

This trailer hit me with a jolt of Halloween energy. I'm ready for it to be October already.

More good news: the game has sold more than half a million copies to date, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch version will include The Grimm Troupe. "So many of you are eager for Switch news, and we want so badly to drop that release date, but we can't do it quite yet! As agonising as that is, we can say that things are pulling together (frame-rate is getting the thumbs up!), but there're still a few more hurdles to clear before we can give you a release date that we’re 100% confident we'll hit."

News:: Crypt of the NecroDancer coming to Nintendo Switch

What a day it's been to be a Switch owner. So many great games and ports have been announced in the last 24 hours, and the beat goes on with the news that rhythm-action dungeon crawler Crypt of the NecroDancer is headed for Nintendo's hip device.

The popular indie-title, created by Brace Yourself Games, has the player control a treasure hunter who falls into the catacombs of an evil being, the titular NecroDancer. After having her heart literally stolen by the fiend, young Cadence must explore the catacombs and dungeons, fighting off waves of monsters and traps.

Where NecroDancer differs from other dungeon crawlers is that all movement and attacks must be done to the rhythm of the game's soundtrack, composed by Danny Baranowsky, with treasure and other rewards unearthed by Cadence's constant, rhythmic progression through the dungeon and its hordes. It's a game that requires patience, good-timing and some forward-thinking, but can become an addictive, even ethereal experience as the player's brain becomes one with the game's pulsing beats.

The Switch edition will feature an exclusive new character and a co-op mode. Already available on multiple formats, including iOS and PS Vita, Crypt of the NecroDancer is well suited to the small screen. Nintendo have yet to give a release date for the Switch edition of the game, but tweeted that it would be coming "soon."

News:: Oceanhorn and Death Squared sold more on Switch than all other platforms

Last week, Kevin reported on a surfacing trend of indie games finding success on the Nintendo Switch as potential players move toward it and away from the Nintendo 3DS. The handheld's eShop might not be the best place for indies, but they seem to be performing splendidly on Nintendo's prized home console.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap sold more on it than any other platform combined. Now, two more developers have come forward to praise the Switch, saying they've also sold more copies of their games on it than any other platform.

News:: Final Fantasy XIV director halting player housing demolition in light of people who were impacted by recent hurricanes

Housing is a huge part of any given MMO for a lot of people, but if a game doesn't provide instanced housing (like WildStar), it can be nigh impossible to actually get one.

Final Fantasy XIV is one such game that has been in a "housing crisis" for a while, because despite three different zones and multiple "wards" (instances of neighborhoods) to choose from, the housing hunt is is competitive  that any vacant lots are snatched up instantly -- they're basically all gone -- and when the new Shirogane district opens up in patch 4.1, it'll probably be completely sold out in under an hour, a drought that will persist during the expansion's roughly two year lifetime. The only respite for potential buyers is that after a specific period of time (it fluctuates but is currently at 30 days) if house owners haven't entered their establishment it'll be deconstructed -- but right now, some people can't even log into the game due to a recent bout of natural disasters that struck the US.

Because it's so serious, the director of FFXIV stepped in to ensure that those impacted by the recent hurricanes Harvey and Irma, who might be without power, will still have time to log back in and retain their cribs. Naoki Yoshida took to the official forums to explain that there will be a demolition grace period of two weeks, which starts on September 15, and could be extended if needed. It's a pretty cool thing to do!

Speaking of housing, I finally got a small lot roughly a month ago! A friend of mine stopped playing the game a little after Stormblood, and let me know the day the house was being demolished -- I snatched it up quickly.

News:: Toxic Overwatch players are making Jeff Kaplan sad

"Toxic behaviour" is a demon of modern video games, particularly when it comes to online play (in fact, it's almost entirely attributable). In team-based games the fallout, both against and among team members can be pretty disgusting and very offensive, especially in the "heat of the moment", right?

The latest Developer Update video for Blizzard's arena-shooter Overwatch features game director Jeff Kaplan addressing this type of behaviour, which is particularly prevalent in Overwatch's competitive mode, where ranking score is apparently a matter of life and death. The video itself doesn't have any particular game news, it's simply a plea from Kaplan, who seems very sincere, for people to just, well, not be dicks to each other.

Jeff does address Overwatch's recently updated reporting system and current plans to inform players whenever their report has seen action, but the majority of the video is him preaching that crappy behaviour simply ruins everyone's fun. Jeff also goes on to say that it occupies staff time, who could be working on designing cool content for the game, rather than tweaking cheat prevention systems, or monitoring in-game report software.

It's almost sad to see how much it clearly disappoints Kaplan that many players cannot enjoy the colourful, friendly-looking and generally light-hearted shooter without having cancer wished upon them, being told to kill themselves, or suffering racial abuse or other forms of verbal hate.

He's right, by the way. Rude and hurtful behaviour in online games is upsetting, redundant, damaging to gaming's reputation, and negatory to both the victim, other players who corral the drama, and ultimately the community and lifespan of the games themselves.

Life is pretty dang difficult. Every day brings new challenges and problems to overcome, as well as many strangers who can often be rude or discourteous to us as we go about our business. Do we really need to be bitching at each other during our free time as well? Especially whilst engaged in a hobby that means so much to all of us and provides a form of escapism from that, often draining, daily grind.

Of course it's a problem that will never go away, none of us are naive enough to believe it can be eliminated. As Kaplan states in the video, there is no "magic patch". But if we could cut back on even a quarter of the abuse that players receive, just for indulging in games for fun and entertainment, not only would it make gaming look more honourable as a whole, but it would raise that level of fun and entertainment for everyone involved.

This video's message may be in vain in the bigger picture, and you may find Jeff's (and my) comments overly-optimistic, perhaps unrealistic. But regardless, they're sentiments that bear repeating.

News:: New Crucible PVP map unlocked for Destiny 2 after world first raid clear

Destiny raids are known for being cleared in under 24 hours by world-first raid groups, so seeing the clan "The Legend Himself" best the newly minted Leviathan raid in Destiny 2 is no surprise. Now I know what you're thinking -- it's already cleared, it must be easy! Well, no.

These people are highly dedicated, have farmed an enormous amount of gear to account for any given situation, and have some of the most talented Destiny players on the planet working on the same wavelength to figure out mechanics. Most random parties will be lucky to clear the first few zones on the first day -- my group made pretty good progress and got to the second to last area (past Gardens) in seven hours or so before we had to break for the day.

However you slice it, the world first clear brings forth a new Crucible (PVP) map called Emperor's Respite, which is themed around the raid's golden architecture. I've never been big into PVP in Destiny, especially with the 4v4 limitation, but it's still a thing you can play!

News:: Japan gets Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud on Nintendo Switch

I'm not really a Phantasy Star fan, good thing too, as I'd be permanently miserable about the lack of love shown in my region and elsewhere for fans of the classic RPG series. The misery continues as Nintendo have announced Phantasy Star Online 2: Ghost for Switch. For Japan, naturally.

Showcased during the Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation, the new port will see the Free-to-Play MMORPG, currently available on PS4, PS Vita and PC in the East, adapted for the Nintendo device. The game will not require the downloading of any assets, as it will be played entirely online via a streaming service (hence "Cloud" in the title).

So, apologies for the bittersweet news, Western PSO fans, but Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud will go live in Japan in 2018.

News:: Breath of the Wild's 'Champion' amiibo arrive in November

Zelda: Breath of the Wild isn't done quite yet. Folks are still finding all sorts of cool tricks and Easter eggs months later, but the game itself will also be rejuvenated later this year when the second (and so far, final) expansion hits.

Alongside of the Season Pass-only DLC is a set of four amiibo figures, which repesent the four Champions in the story -- Daruk, Mipha, Revali and Urbosa. They also now have a release date according to the latest Nintendo Direct stream of November 10, 2017.

According to the stream, they'll "summon materials and weapons," and "conjure up headgear based on the Champion's Divine Beasts." I mean, that's about what I expected! I just hope the add-on is worth waiting for.

News:: Xbox One will soon capture your epic plays in full HD

Along with its other upgrades, the souped-up Xbox One X will come with 4K recording from the get go. Meanwhile, owners of Microsoft's standard console are still dealing with 720p resolution at 30 FPS. Not to mention the added insult of seeing their beloved gaming machine get discontinued. That's enough to make even the most loyal of gamers feel left out. But, there is some good news. The standard Xbox One's Game DVR is getting a bump in resolution to 1080p. Plus, you'll be able to save your recordings directly to an external hard drive. That way, you can save precious storage on your console (which is especially useful if you have the 500GB version). For now, the upgrade is limited to Alpha Insiders. Everyone else can expect to get a taste later this year.
