News:: ‘A Normal Lost Phone’ arrives on Nintendo Switch March 1st

A Normal Lost Phone is the kind of indie game that seizes a tricky niche (mobile gaming) and leans into the form factor for a unique experience -- a Gone Home or Life Is Strange that takes place entirely within a mock phone interface. The game will lose that skeuomorphic novelty when it arrives on Nintendo Switch on March 1st, but will be able to reach players on a console increasingly known for indie titles.

News:: Slime-san sold best on Switch so let's celebrate with free DLC and a sale

Looks like we can add another one to the ever growing list of Rags-to-Switches indie success stories. The Switch version of Slime-san, a wacky 5-color platformer, featuring cameos from Slugcat and many other lovable gaming underdogs, has "...absolutely sold better than the Steam version" according to developer Fabraz. It couldn't have happened to a nicer game either. Filled with memorable NPCs, cute jokes, great music, bonus arcade games and hidden bonuses, Slime-san is clearly a labor of love. It does my heart good to see it succeed.

In unrelated news, the game just got a huge free update on Switch called Blackbird's Kraken. This content has been available for the Steam version of the game for a little while, but at a price. On Switch, it's an auto-update that allows you to access the new stuff from the level select menu. There's new levels, gameplay mechanics, a beach house to decorate, a FPS and a kart racing game to play, new NPCs to meet, and a new monster to be swallowed up by. I've only scratched the surface of the DLC myself, but so far I like it even more than the base game.

Even better, the whole package is 30% off for a limited time, so if you were thinking about giving this one a shot, what better time than now

News:: Two patches are incoming to fix online issues in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Bandai Namco and Arc System Works have outlined their plans to address some of the online connectivity problems plaguing Dragon Ball FighterZ. "We're aware of the situation, and keen to resolve [Ring Match and disconnection issues] with all our might," says producer Tomoko Hiroki.

An update is planned for this month, but Bandai Namco doesn't expect it to fix "everything all at once." As such, a second patch will come in mid or late March to "gradually resolve" the remaining issues.

"Rest assured that we will not stop until the fix has been completed," Hiroki assured.

It might not be the ideal response, but just knowing what's ahead definitely helps allay fears. Regular communication from developers is a beautiful thing even if they don't have all the answers yet.

News:: McFarlane Toys reveal new figures in their Borderlands range

I was a big fan of Todd McFarlane Toys in the past, I had a full collection of that amazing Movie Maniacs series in the late '90s, although I bailed once characters like Sarah Connor and Shaft showed up. Also, I never got a reply to my letter asking for Ghostbusters' Walter Peck to be added to the range.

Regardless, the toymaker marched onward (somehow surviving without the inclusion of the greatest Movie Maniac of all time) and yesterday, Gearbox Software tweeted out that McFarlane toys are to release new figures based on the hi-octane RPG series, Borderlands.

The tweet features prototypes of sinewy head-caver Krieg the Psycho and treasure-huntin' siren Lilith. The latter in particular looks like she's seen some shit out in the wastelands, man. This deadly duo join previous releases ClapTrap, Tiny Tina and Handsome Jack, who all hit the shelves in 2017.

Krieg and Lilith feature articulation points and accessories, and are both scheduled for release in July 2018. You can find more images and information at the official website right here.

News:: The DLC for Final Fantasy XV will carry in 2019

At this rate, I'm starting to feel like Final Fantasy XV will outlive us all.

The post-release episodes centered on Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis were really just the beginning for 2016's ever-expanding RPG adventure. Square Enix has already committed to three more DLC releases, the first of which will focus on the main-story adversary Ardyn. They'll release throughout the year.

In an interview with Dengeki, FFXV director Hajime Tabata gave a status update on the DLC schedule. He says the development team intends to do one more piece of DLC than previously discussed -- so now there's four left to go, not three -- and this newly-confirmed final add-on is aiming for 2019.

If any notable characters don't get their own episode, it's going to feel like such a snub.

News:: Review in Progress: Orwell: Ignorance is Strength

Orwell's first season was an unexpected nail-biter and a personal GOTY on release. It wasn't much to look at, but for all the data input and web browsing, it ended up being a fascinating conspiracy thriller, where the line between surveillance and stalking was easily blurred.

Even with the high stakes involved, Orwell worked because of its intimacy as your agency picked apart the lives of a small but fully realised cast in order to expose a terrorist cell. Orwell's second season, Ignorance is Strength, attempts to expand the series not only with new surveillance mechanics but also a new plot on a global scale. But in doing so, does it lose some of the intensive voyeurism that made the original so special?

News:: Sea of Thieves has skull forts and they sound intense

Many a swashbuckler had a rip-roaring good time during the Sea of Thieves January beta. But, a common complaint is that there wasn't enough variety to guarantee an extended good time. Rare seems set on proving there's more to the high seas than what we've already seen.

For instance, here's this new video that details skull forts. At any random time, a giant plume of smoke in the shape of a skull might cover the sky, which indicates that a skull fort is now active. Inside, there's a gauntlet of skeleton enemies and a skeleton captain that are all very protective of their base. Once they're all bested, a vault opens up that has just a ton of loot in it.

But, you aren't the only one who wants that treasure. The smoke skull serves as an active signal for other crews to come jack your booty. (Or, for the opportunists, for you to go steal the bounty from someone else's hard work.) It's probably more nerve-wracking after you kill the skeletons because you're gonna always feel like you're 'bout to get got.

News:: Western release of DJMAX Respect set for March 6

It's nice to see the DJMAX name pop up again here in the West.

The latest game in the rhythm series, DJMAX Respect, is heading to PlayStation 4 on March 6 with a digital-only release. It'll span 147 tracks and offer support for local and online multiplayer.

Those songs should keep players plenty busy until the floodgates open with DLC.

The plan is to release "all DLC that's available in Asia within the first month [after launch]." All told, DJMAX Respect will get every song from the series' history. Impressive stuff.

News:: Joss Whedon exits Batgirl film, 'didn't have a story'

Warner Bros. and DC seem to enjoy announcing a new superhero movie every other day, and it's no surprise that most of them will never actually make it to the big screen. Enter Joss Whedon's Batgirl project, the latest casualty in DC's unwieldy movie universe. Per THR, the man who brought us The Avengers to film is no longer involved in the project.

Whedon told the following to THR in a statement:

"Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story. I'm grateful to [DC President] Geoff [Johns] and [Warner Bros. Picture Group President] Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed?'"

Whedon's relationship led the writer/director to take over post-production duties of Justice League from Zack Snyder after the untimely loss of his daughter, though Snyder is now speculated to have been fired from the film.

THR sources also speculate that Whedon would likely receive more "scrutiny" for being a white man directing a female-led blockbuster in today's pop culture environment, as if a white man were to direct Black Panther. And with Whedon causing controversy over his treatment of Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron and accusations of infidelities and hypocrisy from his ex-wife (via The Wrap), many modern feminists would likely want to revoke his feminism card anyway.

But if you're one of the ones disappointed by this news, don't worry—you still might get that Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie.

News:: I played Rainbow Six Siege: Outbreak and here are my humble thoughts

Do not adjust your night-vision goggles. That header image is, in fact, a shot from the latest DLC for squad-based shooter Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege. You would be forgiven for thinking a Levi-clad demi-woman with branches for arms might not be the most common sight in a counter-terrorism, tactical FPS game, but indeed she is.

She is a "Rooter," one of the many virus-ridden creatures assaulting Team Rainbow in the upcoming event Outbreak. This new mode launches in Siege next month and sees a selection of Rainbow's finest square up against an array of ungodly creatures, spawning across apocalyptic maps. I was fortunate to get some hands-on with the bizarre event at the Six Invitational tournament, which let me check out how the gory, rapid-fire action sits within Siege's usual one-shot-one-kill gameplay.

News:: The next Pokemon giveaway will arrive in a newsletter

If you're one to keep up with legendary Pokémon giveaways, this is going to be a heck of a year. There's something new every month up through November. Next month, we're getting Regigigas and Heatran.

It's still February, so why bring that up now?

For this particular distribution event, the Pokémon will be obtainable via a code in next month's Pokémon Trainer Club newsletter; you'll need to sign up and opt-in for the email by March 1.

Do that (or just get a hold of a code, I guess!), and you can nab either Regigigas or Heatran in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. Sometimes, when you look at a word for too long, it seems totally alien. The same goes for Pokémon -- and I've been staring at these weirdos for entirely too long.

News:: Monster Hunter: World slays the Japanese charts yet again

Capcom bagged a big 'un. Monster Hunter: World has kept a hold of the Japanese market, finishing as the most-sold game for the past week as reported by Media Create.

For the week of February 12 through February 18, Monster Hunter: World moved 85,322 copies, pushing its lifetime sales in Japan to 1,836,291. This new information comes on the heels of this week's revelation that Monster Hunter: World sold 650,000 digital copies in its first three days after release in Japan. Worldwide, the game's sitting somewhere around six million sales.

Other notable Media Create entries this week are: Secret of Mana (36,042), Splatoon 2 (21,815), Idolish7: Twelve Fantasia (21,481), and Dynasty Warriors 9 (21,180). Some heavy hitters there (look at Splatoon still stickin' around!) but none of them can come close to Monster Hunter's success right now. At least not in Japan.

News:: Crytek's Hunt: Showdown takes to Early Access today

Hunt: Showdown has banished its closed alpha to hell, and the bounty is an Early Access release. Crytek's cooperative everything-in-the-environment-will-kill-you-but-all-the-other-players-will-kill-you-also monster shooter is now officially a product that can be purchased.

Just today, Crytek has made Hunt: Showdown available to buy on Steam Early Access for $30. As these things go, that means it's for sale but also unfinished. Anyone who's fine with that trade-off can follow the game through all remaining steps of development. Really maximizes the amount of hunting and showdowning.

As we've learned over the past half year or so, we're quite enamored with Hunt: Showdown. Our time at E3 was enough for us to award it a Game of Show nomination. More recently, me and Jordan spent some time murdering everything in the swamp during the alpha

News:: Blizzard will host a tournament for the 15-year-old ‘Warcraft III’

Out of nowhere, Blizzard introduced a public test realm (PTR) last fall for its 15-year-old game Warcraft III. PC fans of its current best-sellers like Overwatch play on PTRs to try out new features before they're released to everyone, so creating one for an old title clearly implies greater plans. News:: Love conquers all in the latest Splatoon 2 Splatfest

In an inspiring display of pleasantness, last weekend's Splatfest came to a positive conclusion, as North American players in Nintendo's Splatoon 2 battled it out to decide which was more important: Love or Money.

When all the fighting was over, Marina's pure-hearted Team Love took a 2-1 victory over Pearl's greed for the almighty dollar. By some margin too, as the public poll took 68% of the vote. The physical matches were a little closer, with Love taking Solo play, leaving Money to snatch Team play in its green-stained claws.

I'm an unashamed mark for Pearl, you know this, but I definitely wanted to see her kindly DJ pal walk away with this victory, if only to help restore a little faith in the people. It appears, however, that Pearl took this loss particularly hard, given this heartbreaking exchange, which she surely regrets today...

News:: Early Access Review: My Time at Portia

In the not-too-distant past of 2016, a little game called Stardew Valley came along to eat up an alarming amount of my free time. Stardew filled the void left by relaxing social and farming sims like Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing

I spent over 100 hours farming, mining, and interacting with the inhabitants of Pelican Town, and now another of these time-consuming games has come along to charm the pants off of me. Just as I predicted back in July, My Time at Portia is my new obsession.

News:: 'Alto's Odyssey' took three years to make, and that's all right

It's been three years since Snowman, a tiny independent studio based in Toronto, launched Alto's Adventure on iOS devices. Back then, Snowman was three people -- Ryan Cash, Harry Nesbitt and Jordan Rosenberg -- and Alto's Adventure was their first real game. They didn't know what to expect when they published it on the App Store for $2.99 in Feb. 2015, but the team hoped for the best.

That launch changed everything.

Alto's Adventure was a huge success. Players devoured the serene, soothing experience set on the slopes of a snowy mountain range -- it was an endless-runner snowboarding and llama-herding game, and its only mechanic involved tapping the screen to jump. Though gameplay was simple, the atmosphere and art told a larger story about comfort, risk and the warmth of home. Apple users ate it up, and the next year, Android players got a taste as well.

News:: Half-Life and Final Fantasy XV is an odd, yet amazing, combination

Fans looking forward to the PC port of Final Fantasy XV have just been given an extra bit of incentive to grab it early. All purchases made before May 1 will include a Half-Life skin pack that will let you dress up as Gordon Freeman. You'll even have access to his crowbar as a weapon and will be able to have Noctis don the HEV suit in single-player.

I'm mostly shocked that Half-Life is being added to such a decidedly Japanese game, but seeing Gordon Freeman in any capacity gives me hope that Valve hasn't forgotten about its groundbreaking franchise. I doubt we'll see any confirmations of Half-Life 3, but maybe the real 3 was Final Fantasy XV all along...

As well as that awesome little crossover, a demo version of the game will be hitting Steam next week on February 26. Since the PC benchmark tool had some iffy performance problems, hopefully this new demo is more representative of the final product.

News:: EA's spending E3 in Hollywood again, where the public can try the new Battlefield

For the third consecutive year, Electronic Arts is spending E3 somewhere other than inside the E3 convention hall. Two years ago, it posted up right outside the Los Angeles Convention Center. Then, in 2017, it moved the festivities to Hollywood. This year will be a repeat of last.

Even though the public will be allowed inside E3 again, EA is taking the party to Hollywood. This morning, EA announced the third iteration of EA Play -- ostensibly, the publisher's way of having a presence at E3 without actually paying the ESA for the privilege. It'll take place June 9 through 11 at the Hollywood Palladium.

The eye-catching news item from this announcement isn't so much the existence of EA Play, but rather that attendees will be able to go hands-on with this year's Battlefield and Anthem. Otherwise, it's the same suspects -- sports games, The Sims, and some mobile titles are currently scheduled.

Anyone who wants to go should keep an eye on this over the next couple of months. It's a free event, but you still have to be quick enough to nab tickets before it sells out. Last year, they went up in late April. There will probably be adequate warning so don't sweat it too much. Save that sweat for the Los Angeles June heat.

News:: Details surface on Guilty Gear Xrd's 'Balance Refinement Update'

A few weeks ago, Arc System Works announced that a "Game Balance Refinement Update" would be heading to anime fighter Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2. Some new details have finally been uncovered for said update, which goes live on consoles next month.

The refinement update will feature balance changes for various characters, as well as stamping out bugs across the board. The fishing mode will be adjusted so that players with more than ten fish can still acquire all items. Fixes will also be made to the game's Training Mode, with regard to text display issues and other "problem content"

In addition to these changes, Online is being tweaked to improve delay value processing, which should enable smoother gameplay when rekking internet heads. The PlayStation 3 version will receive some specific fixes, including a fix to Zato-1's animation in Training Mode, and the removal of an issue in Chapter One of Story Mode, that has been present since the previous update.

The new patch will go live on the console versions of Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 on March 1. A PC version of the patch will arrive at a later date. Full details, in Japanese, can be read in the official PDF right here.

News:: Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is messy fun

Living in the Dtoid house with Niero, Jon Carnage, and Tara Long, with daily visits from Max Scoville, was one of the most fun times of my life. We were all such different personalities, all united under a common love of video games. Out of everyone in the place, Carnage and I were probably the oddest couple. He would passionately explain to me that Heavy Rain and Red Dead Redemption are the future of gaming almost every day. I was constantly talking to him about how Animal Crossing and Cave Story were all people needed in this world to be happy. We loved each other, but we drove each other crazy.

The one place where we came together was Pac-Man Championship Edition DX. I'd go to bed with the highest score in the house, and wake up to find he'd stayed up all night in order to take my crown. Part of the reason we bonded over the game came from our common history with the series. We both grew up with Pac-Man and knew the core tenants of the game's design philosophy. What we didn't know, at least at first, was how Pac-Man CE DX managed to expand on the most fun parts of the Pac-Man experience while cutting out most of the fat. Discovering those mechanics, and then using them to try to one-up each other, made for a perfect mix of camaraderie and competition.

Pac-Man CE 2 and Pac-Man CE 2 Plus 2P (the two games included on the Pac-Man CE 2 Plus collection, a Switch exclusive) both work to further expand on that theme, adding new mechanics, boss fights, and most importantly, two-player co-op. While Pac-Man CE DX is still my favorite Pac-Man game to date, you can bet I'll be bringing my Switch to PAX East this year, for the sole purpose of playing with Carnage in between panels. The game is overly complicated at times, but it's still neon-death, ghost-train-chomping Pac-Man, and that will be good enough for us.

News:: Fortnite Season 3 kicks off with more items, 60FPS on consoles, and more

Fortnite, the game so popular that it shut down Paragon, just entered Season 3. If you haven't been following along Epic Games has decided to break down the Battle Royale portion of the game into seasons, which as of recently have been utilizing a season pass style system called the "Battle Pass." In addition to getting a few items upfront you'll also earn more rewards for leveling up -- a privilege that will run you $10 per season (which lasts roughly several months).

But the best part of the dawn of a new season is really the major updates that come with it, and this one is no exception. Console players now have a 60FPS slider (30 is still an option), for one, but all versions also get the new hand cannon weapon alongside of new balance changes, building alterations, and more items like skydiving trails.

Fortnite Battle Royale has become my screw-around game of choice as of late, and I'm glad they keep updating it so frequently.

News:: Nintendo Download: Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus

Nintendo is really surprising me as we enter an era where games aren't taking that long to be ported or straight-up designed for the Switch. While a lot of its early offerings were ports of one, two, or three-year old games we're not getting primo stuff like Bridge Constructor Portal, which only just launched on PC a few weeks ago -- true parity between console launches is nearly nigh.

But I digress, here's what's on offer on the eShop this week. On Switch we have Pac-Man Championship Ediiton 2 Plus, Payday 2, NeoGeo Magical Drop III, Ace of Seafood, Arcade Archives Heroic Episode, Bridge Constructor Portal, Dragon Sinker, Hollow, Membrane, Pool, Radiation Island, Spacecats with Lasers, Spot the Difference, Superola and the Lost Burgers (man there's a lot of weirdly named games out today!), The Final Station, Toki Tori 2+, Twin Robots: Ultimate Edition, and Typoman.

The 3DS is getting SteamWorld Dig 2 and Fat Dragons. The Wii U has a sole release today -- Fat Dragons...again!

News:: Review: The Fall Part 2: Unbound

The first game in this series, The Fall, was a great sci-fi title with some major flaws which kept the experience from mass appeal. It followed the exploits of an AI named Arid, who was trying to save the life of her human companion. There was a huge sense of mystery throughout the journey, and the story kept me enthralled all the way up until its final moments.
