News:: 'Everybody's Gone to the Rapture' creator goes 'dark'

It's a tough time for one of the game industry's more creative studios. The Chinese Room, the developers behind award-winners like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Dear Esther, has revealed that it's "going dark" for the months ahead. The company isn't shutting entirely, but it quietly laid off its team after finishing its new title So Let Us Melt and won't be a "fully active" firm "for the time being." As co-founder Dan Pinchbeck explains, it's really a combination of factors that prompted the decision.

News:: Schooled: Video games taught me how to love (NSFW)

[Video games have that rare, magical power to bring folks together. Sometimes, it’s with people in the same room as you via couch co-op. Sometimes, it’s with a bunch of random strangers on the internet. Whatever the case, I love hearing about this kind of stuff. You see it quite often over in the Quickposts here on Destructoid.

Vadicta has a much sexier tale to tell. This blog certainly isn’t about bonding with family over a playful game of Mario Kart. It’s about learning! Yes, Vadz threw his hat in the ring for this month's Bloggers Wanted, and he’s now on the Front Page as a result. There’s still one week left to get in on the action before September is over, people! We've had a huge influx of entries over the past couple weeks, and we've already got a few more lined up for promotion! - Kevin]

For the first time in my life, a naked girl lies beneath me. She's stiff as a board, arms straight, fingers locked to the edges of the mattress. "Don't cum. Don't cum. Please, don't cum," she begs. I slap around, writhing the way fish probably fuck. I'm going for it. I'm doing it. I'm fucking so hard right now. I'm losing my virginity, and it's all thanks to video games.

News:: Fire Emblem Warriors DLC plans revealed

During Tokyo Game Show 2017, Koei Tecmo revealed the DLC plans for the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors. The company will be taking an approach similar to how Hyrule Warriors went, with each pack focusing on a different game, and a unique costume for buying all the packs in a bundle.

That being said, if you were expecting a new game to be included through the DLC, you'll be disappointed.

News:: Weekend deals: 25% off Wolfenstein II until end of the month

We're spotting great deals on upcoming PC games this weekend thanks to a stacking 12% off coupon code at GMG, enabling anticipated titles such as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to get a pre-order discount as high as 25% off. You'll find Standard Edition for $45.82 and Digital Deluxe for $59.83. Interestingly enough, no pre-order bonus has been announced for the game and if this holds true for The New Colossus up till release, it will be a refreshing change of things in our opinion.

In sales department, Lara Croft and all things Tomb Raider are on sale at up to 80% off. While most games are cheap, the only one making new historic low price is the newer Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration at only $19 and change (with code SAVELARA at checkout). Other PC related sales event includes a Birthday Sale at Bundle Stars with a stacking 5% off coupon and Humble Bundle's latest bundle with Atlus, Sega, and Capcom games (ends Tuesday).

Far down the list you'll find an assortment of dirt cheap used games being offered up by GameStop, with some as low as $0.83 with free shipping. We're pretty sure it's going to cost GameStop more to package and ship these used games but hey we're not running a nation-wide gaming retailer so what do we know about the economics of scale.

News:: Contra's spread shot remains the coolest power-up in gaming

Let me take you back for a moment to five-year-old CJ. There I was, playing the family NES in my parents’ bedroom. The system came with Mario and Duck Hunt packed in, so for the first few years that was all my brother and I played. Eventually, we added other games to our collection, notably The Legend of Zelda, and as he got older we were given chances to start renting games. One of those games was the NES classic Contra, and when I first got my shot at playing after my brother died a dozen times or so, it was my turn to watch my swoll soldier get a bullet to the brain with nearly every step he took. Playing solo or together, we sucked at that game.

Then we figured out when you shooting those floating capsules you get power-ups. I remember getting the laser and thinking it was cooler than a Ninja Turtle marathon, but it wasn’t until I saw my brother land the spread shot that I realized just what cool really was.

Here we are, fighting what we would eventually learn years later is an alien invasion, dying before we can even beat the first level. But once he picked up that spread shot, we made the game our bitch. My luck would only land me the laser and fireball guns for most of our playthroughs. He always seemed destined to get the spread shot, and with it, we actually made it to the second level like the mother-fucking badasses we were. It’s a shame they only made two levels for Contra becau-

What’s that?

There are actually seven levels and what I remember as us totally owning the game is nothing more than a diluted fantasy developed by a brain trying to keep me from the terrible realization that for the longest time we totally sucked at gaming?

That can’t be true; my brain doesn’t like me that much.

Either way, we were shit at Contra until we discovered the spread shot and every time I find myself absolutely crapping the bed at a game I can’t help but think how much more awesome I would be if it had a spread shot. This may be the most nostalgic reasoning for all of my Destructoid Discusses prompts, but fuck it I love that goddamn power-up and I dare you to tell me it isn't simply the best.

News:: Review: Tokyo Dark

You're looking at a nervous girl. She has a hostage and holds a knife in her hands. There's a gun in yours. You're the only character that isn't in danger, but despite that the situation is as tense as it can get. The main character is never in real danger in a video game anyway. They have their destiny to fulfill.

Tokyo Dark isn't the kind of point-and-click adventure that attempts to reinvent the wheel with its narrative. After reading the Telltale-like warning that your decisions impact the story, you're greeted by a somewhat by-the-book supernatural investigation tale. You're with the police. You're searching for your missing partner, but the otherworldly forces at play are much larger than you both. That kind of story. But by mixing design elements of western and eastern games, as well as creating an effective atmosphere with its set pieces, Tokyo Dark managed to grab my attention nonetheless.

News:: Without rampant homophobia in online gaming, I might forget I'm gay

It’s not easy being a single man in the city in 2017. There is so much stress to deal with from work, commute, trying to spend time with friends, exercising, eating right, finances, and always trying to improve yourself that it’s possible your brain may become so overloaded that you begin to forget important facts. With so much going on 24/7 for me, it’s easy to miss scheduled doctors appointments, arrive late for a meeting, or completely forget that I’m a homosexual.

You might be wondering how exactly does one forget they enjoy frequent trips to brown town for backdoor meetings with the one-eyed head of Slytherin. Well golly, that's just how loaded my brain is on a daily basis. With all these reports, interviews, names, places, uses for pencils, and this whole breathing nonsense to keep track of, I end every day so scatterbrained I can't remember if I like to dine on fish or 10" cut Polish sausage.

Thankfully, when I log onto PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, I’m greeted by dozens of young men ready and willing to remind me of my proclivities by screaming the words “fucking faggot” as loud as they can after I snipe them from the inside of an abandoned house.
