News:: Solo's sequels depend on 'fan reaction,' and it's looking good

If you had asked me two months ago what the fate of Solo: A Star Wars story was I would have told you it had a good chance of crashing and burning. If you had asked me naught but two weeks ago about its fate, I might have been slightly more positive after I enjoyed the hell out of the full trailer for the film, but I still would have said it wasn't going to do as well as you'd think a Star Wars film should. But ask me that now, and I'll tell you I've got a lot more confidence in it.

The movie has been tracking really well according to the people who do that sort of thing ($170 million opening weekend predicted), and Fandango reported that its ticket pre-sales are more than double that of Black Panther, which were really good. Solo is more on pace with Infinity War's pre-ticket sales. Now, that doesn't mean a lot for box office comparisons considering a lot of Black Panther's success came in its long shelf life, but it is striking for a movie so wrought with developmental dysfunction, and thus receiving such a short marketing push.

News:: Microsoft's AI future is rooted in its gaming past

The Kinect will never die.

Microsoft debuted its motion-sensing camera on June 1st, 2009, showing off a handful of gimmicky applications for the Xbox 360; it promised easy, controller-free gaming for the whole family. Back then, Kinect was called Project Natal, and Microsoft envisioned a future where its blocky camera would expand the gaming landscape, bringing everyday communication and entertainment applications to the Xbox 360, such as video calling, shopping and binge-watching.

This was the first indication that Microsoft's plans for Kinect stretched far beyond the video game industry. With Kinect, Microsoft popularized the idea of yelling at our appliances -- or, as it's known today, the IoT market. Amazon Echo, Google Home, Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana (especially that last one) are all derivative of the core Kinect promise that when you talk to your house, it should respond.

News:: Dragon Ball FighterZ's next update adds new 'FighterZ Cup' and 'Party Battle'

Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to get a new update on May 9 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Included with a gigantic list of character changes is the addition of "FighterZ Cup" and "Party Battle" game modes. The former is a monthly competition where players will fight to collect points for their selected Z-Unions (a feature that was added in a patch post release). The latter is a co-op mode where three players will team up to defeat specific bosses (probably for rewards).

As for what character traits are being altered, the list is far too long to repost. Literally everyone is having something changed, though fans of Frieza will be happy to hear that his anti-air hitbox is being increased. I'm not up on all of the nuances of DBFZ, but there is certainly a lot of tweaks coming to the game.

News:: Luke Cage is challenged as Harlem's hero in this season 2 trailer

One element of Luke Cage to appreciate compared to the other Marvel/Netflix fare is its optimistic tone—the titular character isn't a brooding, secretive figure like Daredevil or a reluctant player like Jessica Jones, but rather fully embraces his public role as Harlem's protector. This appears to be at the heart of season 2 of Luke Cage, and the trailer seems to depict Cage (the always smooth Mike Colter) perhaps going over his head a bit.

The usually invincible Cage finally meets his match in Bushmaster (Mustafa Shakir), a criminal with similar superhuman strength and for whom bullets are not a problem. Meanwhile, season 1 villains Mariah (Alfre Woodard) and Shades (Theo Rossi) continue to do whatever the heck they were doing in the first season. Expect some other key elements from season 1, including musical performances from notable real-life musicians, shots of Colter's extremely toned body, and the use of the phrase "getting coffee" being a euphemism for intense, gratuitous and passionate sex. Also, Misty Knight (Simone Missick) has a damn robot arm now.

Look forward to Luke Cage season 2 totally ignoring what happened in Avengers: Infinity War when it streams on Netflix in June 22.

News:: Gears of War head wants the Brumak in Monster Hunter

Here's a softball story that will almost certainly never develop into anything beyond "Gee, that'd be neat!" Regardless, it's a weird and interesting crossover idea.

Rod Fergusson, the head of studio The Coalition and the lead on Gears of War, would like to see a beloved Gears monstrosity in Monster Hunter:

News:: Infinity War crosses the billion dollar mark in record time

Avengers: Infinity War made more money this past week, crossing the billion dollar mark a full day before The Force Awakens did it and breaking the record by reaching it in only 11 days. With a hearty $112,474,000 dollars over the weekend the film dropped 56 percent from last weekend, which is very strong for a movie everyone saw opening weekend.

The interesting thing to see is if it will stay on pace with Black Panther, which could end up having a better domestic box office than Infinity War thanks to its incredibly long run in the top ten. Infinity War has a plethora of competition incoming as other summer blockbusters start to hit, but Black Panther had weeks and weeks with almost no competition and insanely good word of mouth. It's quite possible that when the dust settles Infinity War will have all the records, but Black Panther will have made more. This is all domestic of course. World wide box office will easily put Infinity War in the number one spot, especially considering China hasn't even opened yet.

There were some other movies that opened this weekend as well, but nothing big as studios stayed away from even debuting against Infinity War's second weekend. Overboard actually had a surprisingly respectable box office for a remake of a Goldie Hawn classic.

News:: Destiny 2's Warmind trailer is cool and chill and other synonyms for cold

Destiny 2's second major expansion, Warmind, releases tomorrow and here's the launch trailer that slightly precedes it. It hits all the notes you'd expect -- ominous music, some exposition that stresses exactly how dangerous this is, and a ton of explosive firefights. It's all very Destiny.

The high-level Warmind synopsis is that the AI Warmind Rasputin has awoken from his slumber in the polar ice caps of Mars. The Guardians (that's you) have to fend off swarms of Hive and put Rasputin back to sleep. Warm milk won't work, so try either bullets or large doses of diphenhydramine.

More pertinent to most Destiny players, Warmind introduces: a level cap increase from 25 to 30, a new power level cap of 380 (which can be raised to 385 with mods), a Raid Lair called Spire of Stars (this goes live on Friday May 11), an endgame activity called Escalation Protocol which is essentially a wave-based horde mode, some new armor and weapons. and a relic weapon called Valkyrie. And, of course, there will be campaign missions on both Mars and Hellas Basin.

Warmind goes live on May 8 at 11am Pacific. It will cost $20.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II prepares Han Solo season

Electronic Arts sent out a tweet last week teasing a special Han Solo season in their online shooter Star Wars Battlefront II. The season will tie-in with the upcoming Solo movie, set to tell the origin story of the galaxy's most dashing rogue.

As of yet, EA haven't revealed any details as to the events and/or content that will be a part of the season, but it's probably not much of a gamble to expect skins of young Solo and his walking carpet Chewbacca, perhaps some maps from the movie's locations.

According to EA, full details will be revealed sometime this week, so sit tight for now, and before long you'll be doing the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs. You know, like that thing he said it that movie that one time.

Star Wars Battlefront II is available now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: PUBG’s third map will open for all players to test this weekend

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been teasing its upcoming third map for a month now, and this weekend, players on all platforms will be able to test it out -- no invite required. The newly-named Sanhok (formed from the Thai word for 'fun' and the Tagalog word for 'chicken') features ruins and jungle inspired by areas in Southeast Asia. And like the game's unpopular second map Savage, this one is a much smaller 4km x 4km -- just a quarter of the size of PUBG's original arena Miramar.

News:: The playable Zelda mod for Breath of the Wild keeps getting more impressive

The modding community for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is consistently putting in work.

It feels like every time I check back in, there's some new novelty, whether it's Sonic the Hedgehog standing in for your horse or Linkle making a guest appearance from Hyrule Warriors. You might think a playable Zelda mod would be straightforward, but modders are going above and beyond.

Modder Trollsquad57 has been regularly posting Breath of the Wild mod videos. Over the past couple weeks they've uploaded a bunch of impressive Zelda-centric footage, and it's all worth a look.

I'm obsessed with the Flamebreaker armor set. That hood!

This video is a particularly good showcase of how far the Zelda mod has come.

It's even cooler that this stuff works on a Wii U. Props to QNando and everyone else involved.

News:: Someone created their own GameCube Mini and it's adorable

At this point Nintendo is pretty much obligated to make "mini" versions of all of their systems. They've checked off the NES and SNES boxes so far, and next up is the Nintendo 64. I wouldn't mind a Game Boy/Color mixture piece of hardware or a GBA at some point either, but for now all signs point to the N64 Mini coming out at some point.

Either way Nintendrew managed to skip a generation and just craft a GameCube Mini of his own. The gist is that he slammed an Up Squared PC board inside of a smaller GameCube design, and loaded up an emulator. The unit also takes USB input. As the rule of emulation goes; the more powerful the system the more powerful the rig you need to run it, so Nintendrew isn't hopeful that Nintendo can actually mass produce a cheap GameCube Mini.

Still, for a DIY project it more than manages to knock it out of the park -- we still need that official N64 system before we worry about the GameCube!

News:: ARMS comic series pushed back to early 2019

The weekend saw people pour into comic book stores nationwide to grab up a bunch of free comics and, hopefully, spend some money to support the stores that made it possible.

As part of Free Comic Book Day, Dark Horse and Nintendo put out a sample issue of their upcoming series based on Switch punch-up ARMS, which was initially scheduled to launch around Fall of this year. The ARMS comic was featured in a split-issue with a comic based on The Legend of Korra.

However, despite their being no official statement from either group as of yet, it has been noted by readers that the advert within the free issue stated that the series of graphic novels will actually be hitting store shelves in January 2019, quietly announcing a delay from its original launch date.

My local outlet didn't have this particular comic book in, so I don't know whether the story shaped up. I went with the awesome Betty & Veronica instead. Did you check out the ARMS comic? If so, let us know what you thought of it!

News:: Rainbow Six Siege will soon get its 'most competitive map to date'

Next on the docket for Rainbow Six Siege is Operation Para Bellum, the Year Three Season Two content update that will bring a pair of defense-oriented Operators, another gadget, buffs for Echo and Clubhouse, a Pick & Ban system, and a new map that Ubisoft is calling its "most competitive" so far.

"On the gameplay front, expect a series of enhancements," said the team. "We are adjusting how dropshotting is handled and implementing a new counter defuser animation."

As for Pick & Ban, the system "provides an extra layer of strategy between teams, as each side tries to counter their opponents' picks during the banning phase." To shake things up a bit more, each team is allowed a final, secret-to-them Operator swap as their sixth pick. You can play dirty.

Ubisoft plans to hold its full reveal for Para Bellum during the Pro League Finals on May 19 - 20.

News:: There are no plans for a Fire Emblem Warriors follow-up right now, but Koei Tecmo wants to do one

Like all Warriors games Fire Emblem Warriors had reactions from all sides of the spectrum, but a lot of folks really dug it. It turns out Koei Tecmo enjoyed the opportunity too and wants to work on the franchise more, including a follow-up, but nothing is planned at this time.

Speaking to Nintendo dream, Fire Emblem Warriors director Hiroya Usuda and Koei Tecmo Director Yosuke Hayashi explained that the game has come a long way since using Hyrule Warriors as a base, and working on all of the DLC felt like an insurmountable task. But while it was a lot of work they do want to do another -- it just isn't in the cards right now. Hayashi explains it pretty plainly, stating:

In terms of the development period, the project began at a time when the Nintendo Switch had not been revealed, Fire Emblem Heroes wasn’t released and Fire Emblem Fates had recently come out. Together with Nintendo and IS, it was nice to be associated with the Fire Emblem IP and stay close to it, while watching it grow bigger. Because of pressure, I worried if the game would play well, but since we were able to understand the audience, it was a very enjoyable project. We feel regret for the characters we were unable to include. If there’s the opportunity, I would love to make Fire Emblem Warriors 2, but that’s not something we’re working on right now. The Fire Emblem series itself has a long history. We’re also fans of Fire Emblem and we hope to support it in the future.

If you're a big Fire Emblem Warriors fan and want to read the entire interview, tread lightly -- as there's endgame spoilers present.

News:: There's a new Dillon's Rolling Western game coming soon to 3DS, I'm glad both it and the 3DS are alive

It's been known for a 'lil bit, but the follow-up to Dillon's Rolling Western and The Last Ranger is almost upon us. It's called Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers, and has morphed from a full-on western to more of a dystopian Road Warrior premise with Twisted Metal-esque vehicular combat. Yep, I can get down with that.

A few brief clips show us footage of Dillon and his new gang doing battle with evil doers, decked out appropriate in skull carts, as well as brief footage of a boss battle. Another clip straight-up shows cute animals with jet pack and guns, so...that's awesome.

Dillon's Dead Heat Breakers will arrive on May 25 in the west exclusively on the 3DS eShop.

The North American League of Legends Championship Series has a home for its summer finals... and you'll definitely recognize it. News:: Nintendo is now recruiting potential level designers for the Zelda franchise

I'm sure a lot of you out there would love to work on big-ticket franchises like Zelda, and Nintendo is recruiting for just that.

Based on a listing found by Twitter user BlackKite, it seems as if Nintendo is looking for a level designer for Zelda at the moment. According to the listing that role will handle design and mechanical work for dungeons, events, field interaction, and enemies. The requirements include knowledge of Japanese and "game planner" experience for consoles.

While it's easily possible that Nintendo is also working on a 3DS Zelda, they've already confirmed that work on the new console Zelda has begun. Whether it's a follow-up to Breath of the Wild just like Majora was a sequel to Ocarina is unknown, but all signs point to another Switch release in a few years.

News:: FTC send gaming industry giants warning over 'Warranty void if removed' seals

We've all seen those seals on video game consoles and other devices that claim "Warranty void if removed". They're usually placed on a central join so that it becomes readily obvious if a console of other such unit has been opened up.

Well, in a ruling made last month, The FTC have decided that such demands may actually be breaking the law, and have thus sent stern letters to six U.S. companies warning them of such. Thanks to information recently uncovered by Motherboard, we now know those companies were Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo ASUS, HTC and Hyundai.

"The letters warn that FTC staff has concerns about the companies’ statements that consumers must use specified parts or service providers to keep their warranties intact." say the statutory body "Unless warrantors provide the parts or services for free or receive a waiver from the FTC, such statements generally are prohibited by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a law that governs consumer product warranties. Similarly, such statements may be deceptive under the FTC Act".

Such "Tamper-seals" have been a part of video game industry for some time now, so for the FTC to suddenly clamp down on the situation is a pretty big deal. The FTC has requested the six companies review their promotional and warranty materials, stating that "failure to correct any potential violations may result in law enforcement action".

News:: Uh, what? Thanos is coming to Fornite through an Epic Games and Marvel crossover

So this is interesting. Fortnite, the game that's been shooting ahead into the mainstream news for "ruining children's lives" (it'll be something else next month!) is crossing over with Marvel.

Starting on May 8 Thanos, from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) will be entering Fortnite. The mode he's appearing in is called the "Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup," and will involve the Infinity Gauntlet itself. If you find all of the stones and equip the gauntlet you'll morph into Thanos and will have a new moveset.

Again this is a limited mode, and apparently it partially came about because Joe and Anthony Russo, the director duo of Avengers: Infinity War, play Fortnite. Donald Mustard, the worldwide creative director of Epic Games hooked up with them and the rest was history. Yeah this is enough craziness to warrant at least one go! I wonder what percentage of games will actually even see the full "collect stones into Thanos" effect.

News:: English footage for that Shin Megami Tensei mobile game surfaces

In case you haven't heard, Atlus put out a mobile game based on the SMT universe called Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation. It's live in Japan at the moment, and the company is working on an English version for release at an unspecified date.

Atlus just put out footage of said English edition via Facebook, which you can watch below. While the vocal work is still very much Japanese, the text is in English, so you can actually understand the story in this footage if you follow along.

Oddly enough this project is developed by Sega following the acquisition of Atlus, though the latter is involved with the development of the game. The gist is that you're taking a party of four demons dungeon crawling with various mechanics from the series in tow (like fusion and chatting with your foes) -- there's also a light AR element that was added post-launch due to fan-demand.

Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation still doesn't have an international launch window, but as you can see the translation is coming along and will happen at some point.

News:: New Overwatch patch brings changes to Brigitte and pals

Blizzard's massively popular online shooter Overwatch received the latest in a long, long line of updates recently that brings more balance tweaks to the game's cast of wonderful heroes.

The imaginatively-titled 1.23.0.1 patch, which should be live as you're reading this, concerns Genji, Hanzo, Junkrat, Lucio, Tracer and the game's latest star, the brave squire Brigitte. As always, characters have seen some skills boosted, while the brakes have been pumped a little on others, as Blizzard continue in the efforts to keep the chaotic title in balance.

As well as the character tweaks, a huge lists of bugs pertaining to certain maps, as well as the overall game, have been stamped out. You can read about these right here. The Hero patch notes for Version 1.23.0.1 are as follows:

News:: NVIDIA kills its 'anticompetitive' GeForce Partner Program

NVIDIA has canceled the GeForce Partner Program (GPP) just two months after announcing it. The GPP began with little fanfare in early March, but it quickly became clear (thanks to work by HardOCP's Kyle Bennett) that it was more than a simple branding initiative. Bennett showed that GPP was encouraging manufacturers to solely produce PCs and laptops with NVIDIA GPUs inside. Should a manufacturer not play ball, NVIDIA would at best not include it in marketing efforts, and at worst actively hold back inventory to exclude it from upcoming GPU launches.

News:: Rumor: SNK might be working on a new mini arcade console

Chalk this up as a big rumor directly from a source acquired from YouTuber Spawn Wave, but SNK might be joining the endless crew of companies putting out "mini" systems with pre-selected games.

Allegedly the console is set up like a fully sufficient arcade machine with an arcade stick and authentic buttons, but also has a gamepad port on the side, as well as HDMI out (read: you can play it on your TV too instead of the tiny screen). The source claims it'll sport 40 games, the full list of which you can find below.

All of this will possibly go for roughly $100. So far the only official lead is SNK confirming an all-in-one-system of some sort -- so we'll get more info directly from the company at some point. For now, this is looking pretty sweet.

News:: Niantic details this year's 'Pokémon Go' events

Last year, Niantic hosted a day-long Pokémon Go festival in Chicago with 20,000 diehard fans of the smash hit mobile game. Unfortunately, it was a disaster, with both the local data networks, and the game's servers, unable to cope with that many players at once. It recovered from that initially bumpy (and expensive) start to host events in Japan, Korea and Europe, and now it's hoping to maintain that streak this year.
