News:: PC Port Report: Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator

Guilty Gear is a fantastic series that has quietly slipped under the table year after year. It's really two things in one: an anime series, and an intensive, arcade-style fighter.

The thing separating it from other fighters is the amount of charm and charisma that each character bestows, and that's a big selling point for me. As a man who thoroughly enjoys his anime, Guilty Gear has always been a favorite of mine, and one of the few fighters that I can legitimately get into.

Xrd Revelator launched on the PS3 and PS4 back on June 7 in the US, and has finally made the jump over to PC. I certainly enjoyed my time with the game on the PS4, as did a certain Chris Carter, but I think that this just might be my new platform of preference.

News:: Check out the gorgeous new trailer for Dragon Quest XI

Square Enix showed off a new trailer for the upcoming Dragon Quest XI yesterday at Jump Festa, an anime convention held annually in Tokyo. It's the most we've seen of the title so far, and it looks like this may serve as the game's attract mode in the final release.

The environments and characters look fantastic, and there's plenty here that will appeal to longtime Dragon Quest fans. It's brief, but you can just make out the main character unsheathing a sword that looks an awful lot like the one used by the hero in the very first Dragon Quest.

Square Enix confirmed that it's targeting a 2017 release for DQXI in Japan. The end of the video shows logos for the PS4 and 3DS versions, but nothing is shown for the Switch. It's possible Square is waiting until Nintendo's reveal event in January, though the developer has gone back and forth on confirming a Switch release.

Oh, and this. This right here was my favorite part.

News:: Graphics aren't everything...

You've heard it a million times. "Graphics aren't everything!" "All that matters is how good the game plays!" "Butts!"

And let's be practical, graphics sure as heck don't make a game great, however there's no denying that we have come a long way this generation. Regardless of your platforming preference, developers have gone the extra mile for many games, polishing and adding details to visually enhance your experience. I think it's time we start giving some credit where credit is due.

News:: Dynasty Warriors 9 is coming and it sounds epic

Revealed in an official stream today, Dynasty Warriors 9 (known as Shin Sangoku Musou 8 in Japan) will be coming out sometime in the near future. The game is a dramatic overhaul of the Warriors series in that it introduces a completely open-world China to explore. Along with that, every character from Xtreme Legends 8 will be included (with some new ones, I'm sure).

It seems the ambitions don't end with just "open-world." It looks like Koei Tecmo is looking to recreate the entirety of mainland China and allow players to seamlessly enter and exit villages at their leisure. While a lot of China is mountainous, therefore limiting the battle spaces, the towns are going to receive extra detail to compensate for the lack traversable terrain. The combo system is also looking to get an overhaul, which should please the naysayers of the series.

News:: The new president of Kojima Productions is a former Konami president

Shinji Harano, who once headed Konami Europe, has accepted an executive position at Kojima Productions, according to his LinkedIn profile. Harano was previously employed  as president of Konami Digital Entertainment for Konami's European and American divisions. His employment history shows that he is now listed as president for Kojima Productions, beginning in November 2016.

It's no secret that Hideo Kojima's split with Konami was less than amicable, and it appears that Harano may have suffered a similar fate within the company. Though he was previously the face of Konami and represented the company at industry events like E3, he apparently suffered a series of demotions, and his most recent employment before moving to Kojima Productions simply lists him as a Corporate Officer. His profile shows that he left Konami in March of 2016, not long after Hideo Kojima announced the formation of Kojima Productions in late 2015.

It's safe to assume Hirano and Kojima worked together at Konami, and there must be some mutual respect between them. Hirano will be assisting Kojima Productions with its first title, the bizarre, intriguing Death Stranding.

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution, take a bow for the new revolution. Smile and grin at the change all around. Same as yesterday.

News:: PC Port Report: Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel

At first glance, Nitroplus Blasterz could be mistaken for one of those elaborate fan-made fantasy fight videos, cobbled together out of stolen sprites and the Mugen fighting engine. This bizarre collection of anime heroines from dozens of different sources has them whipping around impossibly fast, using all of their signature moves (or what you might assume are their signature moves if, like me, you only recognize a handful out of the cast of characters) in a glorious display of "who would win in a fight" frivolity.

Only, it's not some pre-rendered movie. Someone actually made this. They stitched together all of these wildly different characters and placed them in a fighter that allows them to move and fight each other as seamlessly as they would in their own anime. Kyle was quite taken with it when it came out for consoles last February. Despite not having a ton of nostalgia or reverence for most of the cast, he found a fighting game that could stand on its own merits. So how does the PC version stack up?

Well, it's damn near identical as far as I can tell.

News:: Review: Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero

WayForward may be one of the most underrated developers in the games industry. The studio mostly does contract work, frequently laboring on licensed projects like Adventure Time, though it's also worked on sequels and remakes like Contra 4, Double Dragon Neon, and Ducktales: Remastered. While all of these are extremely solid games, I suspect that WayForward does this contract work mostly to pay the bills for the games they really want to make, including the Mighty series and Shantae.

Shantae has starred in four platformers now, starting on the Game Boy Color way back in 2002. It's been her misfortune to close down multiple systems, and since her games always seem to come at the tail end of a system's life, they tend to be overlooked by the public at large. It's a damn shame because they're consistently entertaining, and the artwork and designs are top notch. Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero is the first game in the series not designed for a handheld system, and the first to go with HD graphics rather than pixel art for the characters and backgrounds. It's hard to overstate how unbelievably gorgeous this game looks, but like your mom told you, looks aren't everything.

News:: The Morning After: Weekend Edition

Letter from the Editor

Christmas is right around the corner, but Santa's not the only one dropping from the sky with presents this holiday season. Amazon's Prime Air officially began service this week, when a drone made the service's first delivery in Cambridge, England. So the future of shipping has arrived ... for a handful of people in the English countryside.
