News:: Sonic Mania is all the proof I needed that Joy-Con need a D-pad

I've been playing a lot of Sonic Mania over the past few days. It's nice that I'm enjoying a Sonic game in 2017, and even more delightful that I get to enjoy it on the Nintendo Switch.

Sonic Mania does all the right things. The controls are tight, the art is nostalgic but not pandering, and it reminds me of what I liked about Genesis-era Sonic games. The one rather depressing thing it does for me is point out what other people have been saying for some time: the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con need a proper directional pad.

News:: Hell yeah, Duck Game is coming to PS4 next week

Duck Game is a great game, albeit one I don't want to squeeze a bunch of people around my cramped PC setup to play. As such, I've been not-so-patiently waiting for the PS4 port. It'll be here soon.

I'm getting giddy just thinking back on Steven's review. "Shotguns are shot, then racked before they can be shot a again. Armor is picked up, then put on. Muskets are slowly, slowly reloaded. There are a litany of handguns, all with different properties. In the frantic panic, will you remember you were holding a derringer with one shot? I can't describe the amount of hollering coming from my living room after the tension-snapping slapstick of two ducks with shotguns meticulously coming up to the other before unleashing a barrage of empty-chamber clicks. They're both out of ammo and the calm, self-assured demeanor they came with dissolves into two panicked ducks jumping around looking for weapons."

With Duck Game finally coming out, now we just need Gang Beasts on PS4.

News:: Daddy Yankee would be a PUBG god

Three's company, but four's a squad in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. At least that's how it typically goes when the D-Team gets together. This time around, Steven "Lipovka Lover" Hansen ditched Brett, Jordan, and me in favor of drinking tequila in Mexico.

That's not to say the D-Team can't function as a trio! Today's run is one of my favorites yet. We invoke the name of Daddy Yankee and summon him as our fourth, spiritual squad mate to overcome the bloodthirsty enemies knocking at our door. Things get pretty hectic during the second half of the video, and tensions run high. Thank goodness we had the foresight to take a break, relax, and snap a few in-game pictures once during one of the final circles.

News:: Play as David Beckham in his prime in ‘PES 2018’

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer franchise always vies with EA Sports' FIFA series for the year's best football game. To get an edge over its competitor, Konami packed new features into this year's edition -- along with licensing some celebrity athletes to include in your squad. While champion sprinter Usain Bolt was an odd choice to include in the game, the next addition to PES 2018 is a no-brainer: The legendary David Beckham.

News:: Microsoft could release an Xbox One X ‘Project Scorpio’ edition

Microsoft used "Project Scorpio" as the code name for the Xbox One X, its powerful new gaming console set to release on November 7th. According to a couple of leaks on German website Xbox Dynasty, the company will celebrate the launch with a new day one-style model in which the codename will show up on the console itself. The images show a clear "Project Scorpio" embedded vertically on the Xbox controller, along with a stippled pattern for the rectangular console itself. The specs also show a 1TB capacity, which should make space-hungry gamers happy.

News:: Review: Sine Mora EX

Sine Mora was a celebrated shmup that came blasting out of a partnership between Hungarian studio Digital Realty and Japanese outfit Grasshopper Manufacture way back in 2012. It received praise at the time for its visuals and gameplay whilst leaving some reviewers scratching their heads at its paradoxical, time-traveling storyline.

It's nearly six years later and THQ Nordic have seen fit to re-release the game on a new generation of consoles, with a selection of new multiplayer modes, 4K resolution options, and the hopes that a whole new audience, who may have missed out first time around, will be excited to experience the game's bullet-hell battles and delightful visuals for the first time.

News:: What do you think of the full Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite launch roster?

After months of waiting, weeks of arguing about leaks, the full launch roster for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has been revealed. As Capcom noted on the UK upload of the latest full story trailer (pointed out by Eventhubs), the "newly added characters bring the final roster at launch up to 30 characters, with more post launch characters to be revealed in the future."

So what do you think of the roster? Before you answer, here are a few facts:

  1. There are six characters never seen in the series before (five if you don't include the new version of Thanos).
  2. There are no characters from Fox film properties like series favorites Wolverine, Magneto, or Storm.
  3. There are only four female characters (Captain Marvel, Chun-Li, Morrigan, and Gamora).
  4. Sigma and Black Panther have been confirmed as DLC additions.

I'm personally not mad at the size of the roster as 30 characters is pretty generous for a 2-on-2 fighter, but it's hard not to feel something's missing from these selections. I'm hoping more hands-on time with its cool gameplay will shake the hollow feeling I have.

News:: Chinese AAA action game, Monkey King: Hero is Back, will make a westward journey

Announced back at Shanghai's ChinaJoy 2017 gaming event, Monkey King: Hero is Back is officially coming west on PlayStation 4. Based on the movie of the same name (which in turn is based on Journey to the West like everything else), Monkey King is developed by Chinese developer and publisher Oasis Games, who is working with Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan and October Media Group to create it.

I'm looking forward to seeing AAA Chinese titles and what that huge market can create besides browser and mobile games. Same goes for South Korea which seems to only care to make MMOs.

News:: Your Bad Movie Night Guide, Vol. 5: Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama

The 80s were a sort of B-movie paradise where creating content cheaply to satiate the demands of home video viewers drove the production of endless films that otherwise might not have seen the light of day. As such, it's little surprise that a number of the best worst movies come from this special time period. Last week, we tackled Lethal Weepin', aka Tango & Cash. This week, we bring you another 80s treat from a true B-movie-Baron, David DeCoteau who still continues to this day to prolifically unleash these disasters upon the human race.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama is one of DeCoteau's finest; that is to say, worst. The movie's title itself is problematic as it's lengthy, involves the-over-use-of-hyphenization and really should have just played it safe and simple. Sorority Babes. Sorority Dames. Nerds vs. Sorority Babes. B-Movie Babes go to College. Why tax you're obviously already taxed audience; why strain their intellects? One can only presume that the 80s was such a shitstorm of Sorority Babe movies that one needed to distinguish oneself to stand out sufficiently from the crowd.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama succeeds in that, at least. It's so bad it's good. It's just utter garbage borrowing from everything it can possibly borrow from and doing it worse than those it borrowed from. It's a bottom-feeding hermit crab collecting other movies shit and building itself a shit home of a shell on its back. Truly incredible. Read on, if you dare.

News:: Here's how to get that Sonic Mania collector's edition to light up

When I saw that a Sonic Mania Collector's edition went up for roughly 40 bucks (at some retailers) and included a game code, I immediately leapt on a pre-order. A lot of people did the same it seems as it sold out pretty quickly, but folks are running into one minor issue with the statue -- it doesn't light up.

I noticed this when unpacking it, that as advertised, the iconic "SEEEGAAA" sound effects plays, but there's no red LED "power" toggle. A self-described curious purveyor of electronics Jojo decided to pop it open on Twitter, and found that all of the wiring for an LED light is there, it's just not hooked up -- there's even solder points for it marked "LED."

Literally all you need to do is follow their step-by-step Twitter breakdown, wire the LED to the PCB circuit board, and you're good. It's such a little thing, but if you're curious and want to partake in a light amount of work to make it happen, you can! Only four screws and a few wires will stand in your way.

News:: Albion Online is a fantasy answer to EVE Online

Ultima Online is my favorite MMORPG. I don't usually dig the genre too much, but when Chris brought up Albion Online by Sandbox Interactive, it looked similar, so I thought I'd have a go at it. What I got was a much different experience far more akin to EVE Online -- extremely dense and demanding, but still fun at a more casual glance.

Albion is a demanding crafting and PvP-centric game where skills and equipment dictate the totality of your character, eschewing a traditional leveling system. The more you do something the better you get at it, and it retains one very jarring element from game of old: when you die, your equipment is fair game. So everything you have crafted or are carrying around on your person is up for grabs if you are in a PVP zone. Which is, consequently, where you are also going to find all the best materials for better equipment.

News:: Guacamelee is getting a limited PS4 retail edition

Guacamelee is one of those games that really stuck in my mind when I played it so many years ago.

Not only does it lovingly recreate the Metroidvania formula in a way that many other developers hadn't thought of, but it also had a lot of unique personality injected in by DrinkBox Studios. Witty writing, fun Easter eggs, great level design, hidden secrets (like conspicuous QR codes) -- it's all there, and that's partly why it gets a yearly playthrough.

Although I already own it on multiple systems that's why I'm tempted to pick up the limited edition on PS4 that just sprung up by way of Vblank, which is limited to 3,800 copies. It's 30 bucks, and allows you to nab a physical copy of the game. Although downloadable prices have crept up from $10 to $15 to beyond, I think Guacamelee is worth it.

News:: Pokemon Gold and Silver for 3DS codes will be sold in boxes

If you're European and weren't going to be satisfied just downloading Pokémon Gold & Silver from the Nintendo 3DS eShop on September 22, then you'll be glad to know there is a physical version coming to Europe as well. Well, sort of. They are shipping shiny boxes with a download code in them.

Those boxes look pretty large to just carry a code, and I don't know imagine an instruction booklet would take up much space either, so what could they be putting in there? I guess it would be somewhat wasteful to put those small games on 3DS cartridges, but making large boxes and shipping them around isn't exactly frugal either.

News:: Would hip teens think Sonic Mania is good?

So Sonic Mania is out and it's sounding like it's actually pretty dang good. But is it only good if you loved Sonic back in the '90s, or would somebody without that nostalgia still think it's great? That was one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid.

The other game on the docket was Tacoma. Ray thinks it's pretty good, but he never played Gone Home as reference. Oh yeah, Ray is on during a Darren week, meaning we've got four people on the show for the first time in a while. It's like usual, but more.

Mostly, the Podtoid boys talked about where we've been for the past couple weeks. Somehow Steven went on a two-week vacation in another country, despite always complaining about being poor. I think he secretly has a trust fund but he's embarrassed to admit it.

Of course, we rounded out the episode with an entry of SATPOTPAQ and a U.S. state-themed Hot Dish. Give it a listen below!

News:: Atari files lawsuit against Nestle for Kit-Kat 'Breakout' advert

Atari have filed suit against food-makers Nestle over a 2016 Kit-Kat commercial that featured a concept similar to the 1976 arcade classic Breakout.

The UK-based advertisement (which itself is titled "Breakout") features a group of people at a train station taking time out by enjoying a video game similar to the Nolan Bushnell-classic, except with Kit-Kat fingers replacing the game's wall of coloured bricks.

Atari have taken issue with the "plain and blatant" infringement, stating that Nestle exploited "the special place (Breakout) holds among nostalgic baby boomers, Generation X, and even today's millennial and post-millennial gamers". The lawsuit was filed this week in a San Francisco court.

A Nestle spokesperson responded that "This is a UK TV advert that ran in 2016. The ad no longer runs and we have no current plans to re-run it." adding that they "will defend ourselves strongly against these allegations."

Nestle and the Kit-Kat brand are no strangers to the courts. Earlier this year the manufacturer lost a long-running battle with Cadbury when trying to trademark the "four-finger bar" design that the Kit-Kat is known for.

News:: The grantees of Engadget’s $500,000 immersive arts program

When we launched the Alternate Realities grant program in May we had no idea what to expect. We saw a need for funding in the arts happening at just the time when new media like AR and VR were starting to go mainstream. So, with support from our parent company, Oath, we set out to fund five immersive art projects that push the limits of storytelling through emerging technologies. The response was overwhelming. Proposals came from as far away as Iran and Australia and ranged in discipline from theater to fashion, documentary to animation. There were multi-million dollar VR productions, animated shorts and escape rooms. (SO. MANY. ESCAPE. ROOMS.)

News:: Snippets of 3DS code found in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2

Capcom stunned us all when they announced Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 would not arrive on 3DS. PC, PS4, and Xbox One, sure, but despite the fact that the original arrived on Nintendo's most recent portable (with an exclusive gold amiibo to boot), it was not to be in the sequel.

Or at least, not right now. Based on a discovery from the PC edition, there seems to be legacy code involved with a non-existent 3DS version. Not only are there multiplayer strings for what seems to be a local competition mode, but there's also SD card notations.

Now your guess is as good as mine if this is actually a work in progress or was a work in progress and was scrapped for whatever reason (lack of 3DS sales, or perhaps an emulation problem with a specific game), but it's evidently there. We've reached out to Capcom for clarification.

I doubt too many people would want this over a Switch port though.

News:: Review: The Hitman's Bodyguard

It's August, and that means we're entering the second span of doldrums for movie releases for the year (the first being the beginning of the year). From now until late September, when all of the horror films start rolling in, we get studio leftovers and also-rans. It is, however, a great window of opportunity for a gem to crop up without the bluster of summer blockbusters to blow it away.

In most years The Hitman's Bodyguard probably wouldn't be that gem, but after a summer of watching action movies that were about as well made as my two-year-old son's macaroni art projects (oh... you put the glue on the table... interesting artistic choice), it is a surprising breath of fresh air to find a competently directed, paced, and acted film. Normally, competence is a low bar, but that's where we're at.

News:: Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon will have new costumes and a few more surprises

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon are on the way and set for a November release, and The Pokemon Company has been steadily feeding us info until then. As well as a closer look at the new "Dusk" form of Lycanroc, we're also introduced to new costumes for the protagonists, new characters, and potentially another zone that will reveal "more secrets of the Alola region."

It's not much to go on, but it's more Pokemon and more opportunities to fill your 'dex and nab those Shin-Legendaries that are featured on the new covers. I really wish there was just one enhanced version of the game, but it remains to be seen of this Ultra duo is going to be more like Black and White 2 (full sequels) or say, an Emerald or a Crystal expansion.

News:: Sonic Mania intro running on stock Sega Genesis hardware

Sick as a dog today but I had to take a moment to post this.

My buddy Ken Horowitz, author of Playing at the Next Level: A History of American Sega Games and owner of Sega fansite Sega-16 posted a video featuring a ROM made for Sega Genesis featuring the Sonic Mania intro animation in .bin format able to run natively on Sega Genesis hardware via flash cart. Currently there is no sound, but it shows off what Sonic Mania could have looked like if it were released on Sega CD back in the day - which would have been an appropriate platform for the game. (Sega Saturn, doubly so.)

News:: Monster Hunter World is looking better the more I see it

Monster Hunter World had an impact that many other games in the series have failed to really hit. Not only was it announced for a worldwide release very quickly (rather than months or even years later in coy fashion), but it was also developed for multiple core console platforms (PS4 and Xbox One), PC, and features cross-region (but not cross-platform) play.

They came out of the gate swinging rather than cater to a niche, and I think it's paying off. Many folks who have checked out of the series for some time seem back in, myself included. This new set of trailers, which showcase day-to-day UI stuff and more action-oriented sequences, only helps augment my feelings so far.
