News::Hawken Wreckage map and Christmas plans revealed

Mechs and Christmas go together like mechs and, well, anything, so the news that Hawken has added a seasonally appropriate Xmas-themed environment and skins fills me with a tinselly, sprouty kind of feeling. In celebration of Old Man Breaks Into Your House And Drinks Your Best Brandy Day, Hawken devs Adhesive Games have redecorated the game's Last Eco map (see above), in addition to optionally smothering your mechs with wrapping paper and candy canes and even snowman repair drones. They've also - and on any other month, this would probably be the headliney bit - added an entirely new map to the game. It's called Wreckage, and as the name suggests it's in a bit of a state.

News::Psychological island adventure Dyscourse funded

Just about a month ago we got our first look at Dyscourse , which has not only a distinctive art style but also a pitch that could potentially demonstrate the strengths of interactive narratives over the more linear stories that most games, books, and movies can provide. Having branching paths with truly unique consequences and important decisions is a tall order, but Owlchemy Labs made its case well on why Dyscourse should be able to pull it off.

Those anxious about whether the title would see funding can breathe a sigh of relief now; Dyscourse met its funding goal with a day to spare in the campaign. With the game funded, we can expect to see the Indie Plane Crash bonus story as well, without us having to help hit a stretch goal or pay extra for the content.

Mike writes, "One of the big indie hits on PC a couple of years ago was a tactical shooter called Frozen Synapse, which was an indie tactical turn-based shooter developed by UK developer Mode 7. News::What was the WORST new game you played this year?

[All week long we'll be asking for your thoughts on certain topics related to the year in gaming. Miss yesterday's post? Click here to chime in with your favorite new songs or soundtracks!]

Ride to Hell: Retribution . Final Fantasy All the Bravest . Resident Evil 6 . Aliens: Colonial Marines . You get the point. Please don't make me keep looking these up. It hurts.

I thankfully avoided every stinker of a game released this year, but I know some of you weren't as fortunate. Some of you got conned into a ticket on the pre-order hype train and had no choice but to ride it to the end of the line. Some no doubt played through these toxic specimens because you knew they were turds, possibly to fulfill some masochistic fantasy that you should probably see a therapist about. Whatever the case, you no doubt played some real shit games this year, and we want to hear about them!

Share your awful game stories in the comments below. Or, if you find yourself getting long-winded, write a blog. (Be sure to share the link below.) We'll be pulling in quotes from the community for a special recap post later this week, so take some time to think about your responses!

Have fun! If it's even possible...

News::Hive Review Busy Buzzing Boards | Twinfinite

Chaz at Twinfinite writes: I got a chance to check out Hive for Steam, a digital version of an existing board game with some interesting twists. The most noticeable difference from a traditional board game, both in this form and in the games boxed forebear, is the apparent lack of, well, a board. The board or hive is built by placing the pieces themselves onto the playing area. Pieces are represented by hexagonal bits with a variety of creepy-crawlies, each with different specific rules surrounding them. I dove right in just a quick glance at the rules, which seemed more complicated than they worked out to be in practice.

News::PS Mobile titles Gun Commando, Mononoke Slashdown go free

As Chris told us, Sony is giving away ten PlayStation Mobile games for free this holiday season. The current pair of titles is an old-school first-person shooter called Gun Commando and a 2D hack-and-slash romp named Mononoke Slashdown, shown above.

If you're a Vita owner, find these in the PlayStation Mobile section of the storefront. Otherwise, they're listed on the PS Mobile Store for those who have a PlayStation-certified mobile device.

I wasn't going to write about the games unless they looked reasonably decent, and that seems to be the case, particularly for Mononoke Slashdown. One of the bosses is the mythological Wanyūdō, a burning wheel with a face. Yep, that settles it. This game isn't covering new ground by any means, but it looks worth getting for free.

News::Killing Floor Christmas offer has new level for The Ball

Every year you can count on Tripwire to crank out some content for Killing Floor for Christmas and this year is no exception. What's interesting about this year's Twisted Christmas Event is that's there's some neat crossover with the first-person puzzler The Ball.

First up, there's two new maps and achievements along with the return of all the Christmas-themed mutants from previous years. You'll also get a chance to get the Zed Gun and Baddest Santa again, if you didn't manage to get the unlocks from a previous event.

If you already own The Ball, you'll unlock Harchier Spebbington (which is the best not-really-an-upper-class English name ever) as a character skin which was previously only available as a pre-order. There's also a new two-hour mini campaign for The Ball and all of this is free if you own both games. If not, both are reduced to half price right now and Killing Floor is free to play until January 2. Killing Floor might be looking a bit old now but you can't argue with a game that's been supported this well with free and paid DLC.

News::You don't say: Super Time Force also coming to Xbox One

No, Xbox 360s haven't magically become irrelevant now that the Xbox One is out, but developers are starting to make the transition all the same. For a game like Super Time Force , it makes total sense that it would release across both systems.

Capy will self-publish its side-scrolling shooter on Xbox One "a few months into 2014." As a result, the Xbox Live Arcade version won't be done this year as previously expected. Instead, it will be out at the same time as Xbox One -- that's the plan, anyway. A long wait made even longer, but Super Time Force should be well worth it based on how well the game shows at expos.

There's a bit of footage in this trailer, as well as another look at the studio's other Xbox One game, Below . Both are shaping up quite nicely.
