News:: A 2017 GOTY list that doesn't include PUBG

Listen, I don't have anything against PUBG, other than maybe the name is too long and obnoxious and the abbreviation is equally frustrating to say, I just don't....care about it. I don't even own the game or have any desire to. I've played Fortnite's Battle Royale mode, and it was a cool way to kill an evening with friends, but after that single play session, I've uninstalled and never looked back. Plus, PUBG looks horrible for colorblindies like myself (maybe the desert map helps with this?).

Anyway, enough about that, I'm here to talk about the good shit of 2017. It was a pretty great year for me, overall: I earned another teaching degree, I ran my first marathon, got engaged, and played some incredible video games.

News:: Fire Emblem Heroes celebrates the new year with seasonal additions

If any of you Fire Emblem Heroes fans took a break for the new year, then you might want to hop back on your mobile and boot up the popular card-battler, as new content has been added to celebrate the dawn of 2018.

Special variants of characters Azura, Takumi and Best Gal Camilla have been added to the game, alongside a "Happy New Year!" paralogue story. Nintendo are encouraging fans to celebrate the new year "Hoshindan style". A trailer was also released showcasing the variant character's abilities.

There is much to celebrate for The Big N, as Fire Emblem Heroes was a very popular mobile title throughout 2017, as the spearhead for Nintendo's push into the mobile-gaming market, which also included titles Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

Fire Emblem Heroes is available now on iOS and Android device.

News:: The Mercenaries Saga series is coming to Switch

Over the course of the last few years or so Circle Entertainment dropped a low key series called Mercenaries Saga over the iOS, Android, and 3DS platforms. And you know what they say -- the Switch is the new 3DS -- so naturally it's coming to Switch.

The publisher just announced that the system is getting a brand new version called Mercenaries Saga Chronicles, which includes all three games for the first time in the west, and the first time the original is on a Nintendo system (it was previously just on mobile). As studios scramble to put basically everything in their library on the Switch, owners of the system only continue to benefit.

It's strange to think that just a few months ago studios were hesitant to bring anything to Switch, much less convert Wii U Kickstarter promises to it or bring new games to it, but here we are with everyone making a mad dash into this money pit.

News:: Nippon Ichi! New Mai Shiranui figurine from Hobby Japan

Outside of the Street Fighter cast, there are few fighting game characters more recognisable than SNK's Mai Shiranui. This popular ninja gal has a been a figurehead for the company ever since her debut in 1992's Fatal Fury 2.

Now you can have a Shiranui of your very own, as Hobby Japan have crafted this wonderful 1:6 scale figurine of the happy-go-lucky fighter. Mai stands at just over 10.5 inches, and is depicted in her trademark fighting stance. There have been a few figurines of Ms. Shiranui over the years, but this one has some really nice detailing going on. Notice the fabric patterning and hair-blending, for example.

Mai Shiranui is available for pre-order over at Play-Asia, priced at around $190/£140, not including shipping or any customs taxes. Mai is expected to ship in May of this year.

News:: Marcel's Dtoid 2017 Yearbook of Games

2017 may collectively become known as the simultaneous best and worst year of the past decade. While the lineup of games throughout the year hasn't been this strong since 1997, the real world has also been a shit show. There were dozens of games that prove Japanese devs aren't out of touch with making good-ass games, here in the United States we've seen political division, societal restlessness and disillusionment, many beloved celebrities and public figures passing on, and several disasters both man made and natural.

News:: Rumour: Amazon Placeholders point to upcoming Nintendo Direct

Online retail giants Amazon recently created eighteen placeholders for as-yet-unannounced released for the Nintendo Switch. The placeholders (which have since been removed) were spotted by Cheap Ass Gamer. Each placeholder featured an image simply stating "Just announced at the Nintendo Switch event"

This has led to some knee-jerk conclusions that another Nintendo Direct is right around the corner. Of course there's zero concrete evidence to support this, but it's a pretty snug theory, given that Nintendo held such an event in January 2017. (In fact, that previous January event is where these placeholder images originated).

We will update you should any news break pertaining to a new broadcast. In the meantime, if these are in fact eighteen new titles, what would you like to see from Nintendo this year?

News:: 'PUBG' is quietly changing video games with its 3D replay technology

The new replay tools offered in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds are so much more than standard video-capture technology. In fact, it isn't video capture at all -- it's data capture. The 3D replay tools allow players to zoom around the map after a match, tracking their own character, following enemies' movements, slowing down time and setting up cinematic shots of their favorite kills, all within a 1-kilometer radius of their avatar. It's filled with statistics, fresh perspectives and infinite data points to dissect. This isn't just a visual replay; it's a slice of the actual game, perfectly preserved, inviting combatants to play God.

News:: Player shows Bungie how it's done, makes an Infinite Forest mockup for Destiny 2

One of the biggest letdowns in Destiny 2's first expansion (and Bungie's entire history, actually) is the "Infinite Forest." Initially this was billed as some sort of repeatable activity, and some fans even thought it would operate like the fun endgame Rift system from Diablo III -- but we were all dead wrong.

Instead the forest is actually quite finite, as it ends quickly with one of several activities that all feel the same, then it kicks you out entirely, and only lets you back in if you pick up a quest. You can't even enter it whenever you want on the tiny new Mercury map. Oh what could have been with just a few tweaks! Pheonise took it upon themselves to just do the heavy-lifting for the AAA developer, instead opting to crafting their own version of the system.

As an improvement it's now truly infinite, as players earn a loot chest at the end of a segment, then have the opportunity to choose to keep going on as much as they want for more rewards. The assets are a little rough (and the author admonishes that they didn't have to work with the pre-existing codebase) but incredibly impressive for a two day development time from one person.

News:: Did you ring in 2018 with video games?

It's January 1st, that means we get to do all of this over again, except hopefully better. However 2017 went down for you, the new year brings new potential and fresh opportunity, and I hope all you guys 'n' gals grab hold of that and run to the moon with it.

However, some of you right now might not be feeling that "get up and go", and are instead nursing hangovers, or struggling to simply roll out of bed, having spent a squalid night of debauchery ringing in the coming of the new year.

Not me though, I welcomed in 2018 with eggnog, playing some Pinball FX3 and beating that frikkin' robot on Cuphead (just Wally Warbles left and Expert is done). Perhaps some of you also chose video game battles over actual pub brawls with that fella who was your buddy five minutes ago, but now wants to kick your head in over Brexit*

Some of you may also be lucky enough to be off work today, and as such will settle down with your controller and a full day's worth of gaming. So, did you spend New Year's Eve in the company of some the year's best releases? Do you have plans to relax with vidyagames today?

Let us know what you got up to and, of course, have a very happy and successful 2018.

News:: Super R-Type is back with an SNES reprint from Retro-bit

The R-Type series was one of the first shooter franchises I remember playing outside of my random jaunts with Galaga and the like, so I'm always happy to see it maintain its relevance. Retro-Bit is doing just that by re-releasing it in physical form on the SNES, which will bring with it a giant bundle with various goodies.

Ride the tiger You can see his stripes but you know he's clean Oh don't you see what I mean.

You don't? Oh, right, Holy Diver wasn't just a rockin' song by Dio, it was also an NES platformer, and it's coming back too. Retro-Bit is also doling out the NES game in physical form, and both are coming to Switch!
