News:: Ghost of a Tale leaves Early Access in two weeks

Recent talk of Moss put the medieval mouse adventure Ghost of a Tale back on my mind and left me wondering when the game would see a full release. It appeared on Steam Early Access in July 2016 only to slip off my radar not long after. Thankfully, in just a couple more weeks, it'll be out for good.

SeithCG has confirmed a March 13 launch on Steam, GOG, and Humble for $25.

During these final two weeks of Early Access availability, Ghost of a Tale will remain $20. And as for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, those are expected to go out later this year. "I want to make sure we address everything before we start entering the 'certification dance,'" the designer said.

"The one thing I know is we have given it our very best. The game is truly charming, fun, and even moving at time: it is exactly what I was hoping it would be, and then some! I'm immensely proud of the work created by everyone involved."

If you haven't kept tabs on Ghost of a Tale lately, you should check the full post. There are some encouraging before-and-after screenshots comparing the 2015 build to the final version.

News:: Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite joins Microsoft's 'Play Anywhere' initiative

During E3 2016, Microsoft took to the stage to announce its "Play Anywhere" initiative. This new program would see games being released simultaneously on PC and Xbox One with crossplay enabled. One purchase (most of the time) would grant you access to both versions and you wouldn't need to worry about restarting your progress as save files would transfer over. While there aren't that many titles available with "Play Anywhere" (this Wiki page lists 57), Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is suddenly now a part of the program.

Popping up on the Windows store out of the blue, the crossover fighting game is currently available for $39.99 with the entire host of DLC ready to go. A deluxe version is also available for $59.99 and includes the character pass DLC. If you purchased this game digitally on Xbox One, you should already have the PC version (along with any DLC), but anyone who was waiting (for some reason) should know that this version is Windows 10 exclusive. It will also be a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app, so that might bring performance problems or installation oddities.

I have very limited experience with newer UWP apps, but both Forza 7 and Age of Empires: Definitive Edition run perfectly fine. I would imagine this does, too, as the previous PC version was solid.

News:: Some updates on the Uncharted and Last of Us movies

Naughty Dog's games are usually held up as ripe for adaptation to the big screen, which is a bit ironic, since they steal much of their inspiration from that very place. As such it hasn't been much of a surprise that both an Uncharted film and a The Last of Us film have been in the works for years. Both have been stop and go forever now, but according to Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann both are still in the works... whether he likes it or not.

The Uncharted film is much further along. Last we heard about it the movie was going to be a prequel and star Tom Holland, which still seems to be the case. Shawn Levy is directing, and there's even a finished screenplay. Druckmann is a bit non-committal on when things might actually get rolling, though.

"The Uncharted movie, yeah, we’ve had some conversations with Shawn Levy. And he’s really passionate, gets it, and I think he understands where we’re at. We’ve kind of evolved our feelings towards these kind of adaptations over the years. We used to just be excited, ‘Oh, my god, movies are looking at us. There could be an Uncharted movie on the screen.’ And then as more time passes on, we’re not excited about a direct adaptation of the story we told, because we feel like we’ve already told that story very well, cinematically, so I don’t know what else you could bring to it. … [Shawn Levy] wanting to tell a different story than the main four adventures – with potentially a young Nathan Drake, that fills in the gaps – I think is a lot more interesting than trying to retell Uncharted 1, 2, 3, and 4.”

Yea, I couldn't agree more with him on that. One of the reasons I'm not too hyped about the new Tomb Raider movie is it looks like they're just telling a story I already experienced in a very cinematic fashion. Uncharted is basically a game cribbing from the great adventure movies, so why crib back again? I like the direction they're taking on this, and hopefully it's a way forward to make good video game movies.

That ideal seems to be what is holding up the The Last of Us film as well, which producer Sam Raimi said was at a standstill as far back as 2016 thanks to differences between Sony and Druckmann. Druckmann actually wrote the first screenplay for the movie as a direct adaptation, but has since soured on that idea.

“…And even I worked on the script for The Last of Us film, which was a direct adaptation. And now, having some separation from it, I look back and [am] like, ‘I don’t want that movie to be made.'

“Maybe there’s something that could be done in the world, either focusing on other characters or other time. But, for me, and I know for Naughty Dog and for a lot of our fans, Nolan North is Nathan Drake, Ashley Johnson is Ellie, Troy Baker is Joel. And it would be very disorienting to see someone else in that role.”

Preach on, sir. Preach on.

News:: Dragon Quest's legends littered with lighthearted levity

Role-playing games are usually lauded for dramatic storytelling first and foremost. Sure, there’s a lot of comic relief in our favorite RPGs, but “serious story” tends to be what defines them most. It’s what most of us think about when critiquing them, anyway. Yet curiously, one of Square Enix’s longest-running IPs is more iconic for its quirky tone.

Dragon Quest games tell a variety of tales, ranging from simple destinies to jaunts filled with comedy to tear-jerking twists to the gut. Heck, Dragon Quest V has the darkest story in the series, featuring (MANY SAD SPOILERS REDACTED), and it’s a fan favorite. If anything, I should be advocating for more games in this series to follow in its somber footsteps, which I gladly will do! But like the rest of the series, even DQV is stuffed with puns and oddities which set an overarching mood of levity. And this series is all the more lovable for how it uses them.

News:: Hidden Metal Gear Survive message spells out 'KJP forever'

Metal Gear Survive is a strange game in and of itself, but the context surrounding Metal Gear as a whole makes it even stranger. We're stuck in this messy transitional period between the Kojima-led games of old and whatever direction Konami eventually settles on for the future of the series.

For now, though, we have Survive. Attentive fans have noticed something peculiar in the game's opening moments. During an early cutscene, you're shown a list of code-named soldiers alongside your own custom-named character and, as laid out by Michael Yurko on Twitter, there's a hidden message.

Just take the first letter from each of the the underlined words and put 'em all together.

The end result? "KJP Forever." Or, Kojima Productions forever.

It's worth noting that these specifically-named characters are the wandering Mother Base soldiers from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. So while the "KJP forever" Easter egg is a holdover, to some extent, the folks working on Survive went to the trouble of listing the names in the correct order.

Another fun one: the AWOL soldiers at the bottom of the list are named Bastard Yota and Cunning Yuji. That's surely a nod to Metal Gear Survive director Yota Tsutsumizaki and producer Yuji Korekado.

News:: Review: Fable Fortune

Poor Fable. Leaving aside Peter Molyneux's tendency to promise way more than his teams are able to deliver, the first two games were well-received by critics and players alike.

But then Fable III happened.
And then Fable Heroes happened.
And then Fable: The Journey happened.
And then Fable Legends was canceled, and Lionhead Studios was shut down.

Despite all this, Fable yet lives on today, its downward spiral of a legacy tied to a new collectible card game on PC and console. Hey, at least it's not a battle royale.

News:: Contest: Win a copy of sci-fi mystery game, The Station

[I decided to extend the contest one extra day, because I'm the master of my own destiny! Get your entries in now - contest now ends tomorrow!]

We've got things to give out, damn it, and nothing is going to stop us from doing so! Unless, of course, we discover alien life out in space which challenges our very notion of thinking, bringing the collective of human thought and engineering to the common goal of understanding what lies beyond this blue sphere of ours.

Which is more or less exactly the plot of The Station, a new sci-fi mystery game from devs who worked on BioShock Infinite, League of Legends, and Kingdoms of Amalur.

News:: HAL Laboratory's first mobile game is out today

It's fun to see companies like Game Freak (Pokémon) and HAL Laboratory (Kirby) branch out with original smaller-scale games every now and then. Part Time UFO is exactly that -- it's an object-stacking action puzzler in which a sentient UFO with an extendable claw has come to Earth in search of friends.

HAL first launched the game last year in Japan, but it's only now ready for a wider release on iOS and Android. Part Time UFO is available today for $4. The physics-centric design is simple enough, but the charming execution helps set it apart. Even just the screenshots are expressive.

I hope there's more to come from the company's mobile division.

News:: Fighting EX Layer receives release window, price and adds Shadowgeist

Arika have finally announced a release date for their upcoming title, Fighting EX Layer, now expected to land on PS4 before the end of June. In addition to this news, the developer also revealed Shadowgeist, the latest addition to the quirky title's roster.

Among the news, which came out of a Twitch live stream from the developer, we also heard that the game will be released as a digital-only title with two price points. $60 will get you all 12 characters and 15 "Gougi decks". A cheaper version of the long-time-coming sequel gets you 10 characters and five Gougi decks, for $40.

It was said during the stream that although there are no plans for a physical release, Arika would consider one, as well as porting the game to PC, should Fighting EX Layer prove to be a success. Hmm... I think it's a pretty fun game, but I'm not sure how many copies such a niche title will shift at $60. It's also worth mentioning that game will not have a Story Mode, not support legacy controls at launch and will feature Japanese dub only.

The 86-minute live stream can be watched below. It includes English translation.

News:: HBO's Fahrenheit 451 has a new teaser that's straight fire

HBO released a trailer today for Fahrenheit 451, a film adaption of Ray Bradbury's pivotal science-fiction novel. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as the protagonist/lover of fire Guy Montag, and Michael Shannon as the stern Captain Beatty.

Now, as hilarious as it is that Michael B. Jordan, the human torch, is playing our protagonist, this trailer shows a lot of promise. Not only are Jordan and Shannon talented actors, but the vision for Bradbury's dystopian feels tangible and realistic. The world looks much like our own - not too futuristic or fancy - but with a healthy dose of charred literature to go with it.

Michael Shannon will be fine as Captain Beatty, though I'm certain many of you have grown just as tired as I have of seeing him always play an intense villain character. But, Ramin Bahrani, the director of Chop Shop and 99 Homes is guiding the film, and I'm sure he'll faithfully capture the tone and themes from the book that Bradbury penned over 60 years ago.

Fahrenheit 451 premieres in May on HBO.

News:: Nintendo is now allowing user reviews on their website

The Miiverse is dead, long live the Miiverse.

Nintendo has recently added a way to get that same Mii feel up in their website's business, as you can now review games directly on the official website with your official Mii seal of approval. Evidently Nintendo has set it up so that you need to play the game for two hours, and once the system has scanned your Nintendo account for approval, you're good to go. Star ratings and text are supported (see below).

This can't possibly be used for trolling and the like right? I hope Nintendo is up to the task, and that the ratings system is fair if someone does write a well-reasoned manifesto on why they don't like a particular title. Nintendo says that won't happen, and that a moderation period of up to one week will ensure that trolling doesn't occur, but I'll be checking back into this concept eventually to see if they can keep the peace.

News:: UK Charts stagnate despite strong entry for Metal Gear Survive

Last week, I mentioned how, as we move toward Spring, the UK video game charts were starting to shake up a little. Well, this week put paid to that, as FIFA 18 still sits atop the mountain, while Grand Theft Auto V and Activision's Call of Duty: WWII climb back into their earlier positions of prominence.

Konami's post-Kojima title Metal Gear Survive made a strong debut at number six, while last week's high-flyers Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Bayonetta 2 have dropped out of the Top Ten entirely. Monster Hunter: World continues to impress, holding firm at number four. Super Mario Odyssey also popped its head back through the door to round out the Top Ten.

Elsewhere in the charts, Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege made a huge leap from number 27 to number 13, perhaps inspired by the recent Six Invitational tournament and simultaneous free-play weekend. Meanwhile Bandai Namco's anime RPG Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet failed to make mainstream impact, debuting at number 37.

News:: Metal Gear Survive is getting post-launch content in the form of co-op missions

I'm done with Metal Gear Survive's campaign and at this point I'm basically waiting for matchmaking sessions to actually fill, but Konami says that more content is on the way -- which could spur more people into action after they've finished the campaign in turn.

Starting next month Konami is adding post-launch content, which includes the new mission type "Rescue." As expected you'll need to brave the enemy and rescue NPCs, and all of this will be happening in tandem with new modifiers for challenges that alter the way you approach each mission.

I really hope other sweeping changes are in the pipeline, like the complete eradication of microtransactions and some other tweaks to the tedious survival formula.

News:: Assassin's Creed Origins' DLC has been slightly delayed

Ubisoft have informed Assassin's Creed Origins fans that the upcoming DLC, Curse of the Pharaohs, has been pushed back a week from its original launch date.

The expansion, which features an all-new storyline, was originally scheduled to drop on March 6, but will now come crawling out of the tombs on March 13. The expansion will see Bayek travel deep into the Valley of the Dead, where he will fight both monstrous creatures and the wrath of Ancient Egypt's past rulers.

Curse of the Pharaohs is part of Origins' Season Pass, though it will, of course, be available for purchase separately. The delay is not expected to affect the release of free DLC quest Light of the Dunes, which is scheduled for release this week.

Assassin's Creed Origins is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

News:: Rise of the Tomb Raider is probably headed to Xbox Game Pass very soon

Tomb Raider's meteoric rise back into the limelight has been fantastic to watch. After the second Jolie film's failure and the release of few mediocre games capped off by Angel of Darkness, Lara Croft had succumb to the same corporate over-saturation strategy that many other franchises suffered in the past.

Now we have a brand new film with Alicia Vikander and Walton Goggins arriving next month, and a brand new hope for the series with the 2013 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you haven't enjoyed the latter yet, your chance is coming up alongside of the release of the film.

As announced by Major Nelson, it looks like Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to be part of the Xbox Game Pass program in March. If you aren't aware, this program is an extra subscription on top of Xbox Live, and it allows participants to access a library of games -- and soon, brand new first party titles the day of release.

Having used the program for a bit I've been enjoying it! Microsoft has done a good job of cycling in relevant games and the initial selection is pretty great -- the full download conceit also beats having to stream them.

News:: Valkyria Chronicles 4 demo available on PS4 in Japan

Japanese PlayStation 4 owners can now download a demo of Sega's upcoming turn-based battle title Valkyria Chronicles 4. The demo went live on the PSN store in the East earlier today.

Weighing in at a somewhat hefty 5.3GB, the demo lets players play through the sequel's opening, coming to an end at the second chapter of the main campaign. Save data from the demo will be carried over into the main release of the title, which lands in Japan next month.

Of course, sneaky fans in the West may be able to access the demo through alt accounts, though I assume that there will be some trial-and-error involved in making your way through the games menus, but such trivial matters wouldn't stop the soldiers of the Federation Army, right?

Valkyria Chronicles 4 launches in Japan in March on PS4 and Summer on Nintendo Switch. It is scheduled for release in the West on PS4, Xbox One and Switch later in 2018.

News:: There was never a chance of Super Mario Odyssey on Wii U, producer says

With Nintendo's lengthy "it's done when it's done" development cycles, it's easy to think that some games started life on older platforms before they migrated over into the modern era. But that's not the case for Mario Odyssey, according to its producer Yoshiaki Koizumi. Speaking to Game Informer, he explains plainly, "It was always planned for Nintendo Switch. We really were considering a lot of the hardware capabilities specifically for this game, and wanted to make the most use of them."

Just in case it wasn't clear, he goes on to note, "I think the idea of what the Nintendo Switch is became very important around here, because it can both function as a console or portable device. We really thought about what sort of software features would make the best use of those capabilities. Super Mario Odyssey really answers to a lot of that capability in the way we had hoped. We wanted to time it for year-end release to make the most of that as well."

While the "it's a portable and a console" line is a marketing term pretty much every studio arm uses, and you can see the tap-dancing routine around the failure of the Wii U from here, it does make sense. By the time Odyssey started development the writing was on the wall for the Wii U and it wouldn't make sense to waste it on a bust as the damage had already been done.

News:: Are you strong enough to overcome Fate/Grand Order's Monte Cristo event?

You know a gacha game wants you to feel despair when it throws an event at you after the previous one ended. As we hit the final days of February, Fate/Grand Order's next festivity will throw us into a difficult ordeal called "Vengeful Demon's Wail at Prison Tower." Of course, it starts after the Chaldea Boys Event so I hope you have some Saint Quartz left after your attempts to obtain Astolfo/the cutest Rider and Amakusa Shirou. It's a good thing that the former is a part of the non-event Servant pool.

Luckily, the event's glimmer of hope is that we'll get the chance to roll for North America's first Avenger-class Servant, Edmond Dantes/The Count of Monte Cristo. To top things off, he's a five-star character so he might be useful. If you manage to get him, you'll have a second way to do more damage to Rulers like Jeanne and Shirou.

At first, you might think that he's Nagito from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, but it seems like Rui Komatsuzaki designed the character while going through a case of Akira Toriyama syndrome. Nonetheless, I'm a fan of his art so I don't mind the Fate version of the Count of Monte Cristo having a similar design to the Ultimate Lucky Student.

If you cleared the London Singularity, then you can tackle the event on March 1. Hopefully, your favorite Servants are good enough to clear it. Otherwise, you might have to embrace despair.

When I first saw the phrase Immortal Redneck I laughed out loud. Like a real, hearty belly laugh. It was so absurd, absurd enough to get me to give it a shot, and I'm glad I did.

News:: Will Black Panther anchor the next phases of the MCU?

Black Panther dominated the box office again this weekend, and not just in a way that a movie with no competition normally would. It had the second biggest second weekend in history with $108 million, coming in behind only The Force Awakens. In two weeks the film has outgrossed every other Marvel movie except for the two Avengers films, and it's on pace to beat one of those by the end of next week. I mean... damn. Worldwide the movie has brought in $704 million, and hasn't even opened in China yet.

This all begs the question if Marvel needs to reevaluate how it was going to anchor the next phases of the MCU. In the first three Iron Man held together the universe, eventually making way for Captain America to do the heavy lifting. But both those character's stories will come to a sort-of end with the upcoming Infinity Wars films, and the next phase is going to need new characters to drive them forward. Early word was that Captain Marvel would be the anchor, but given Black Panther's success should Marvel make him the new Captain America?

I'm of two minds here. On one hand T'Challa is an awesome character and Chadwick Boseman has the presence on screen to easily handle this. On the other, one of the best things about Black Panther was that it was its own thing for the most part. Turning the upcoming Black Panther films into something like Civil War, which was basically just Avenegers 2.5, would lose a lot of what made the movie great and thus so successful.

This, of course, could all be a moot point, as Marvel's plans could involve more Cap or more Iron Man or more of some other hero we don't know about that they plan to anchor the story moving forward with.

Can we also just take a moment to recognizing the fact that Jumanji and The Greatest Showman are still in the top ten nearly two months after their initial release. That's insane.

News:: Review: Mulaka

Mulaka is a 3D adventure game with a story based around the culture of the Tarahumara people who hail from Northern Mexico. Its influence from genre mainstays, such as Ocarina of Time and Okami, is felt in every inch of its presentation, but it does just enough differently to make itself stand out.

We follow a travelling warrior who must prove his worth to several deities, which are sprinkled across the world map, in order to recruit their help in defeating an evil force that wants to destroy all life and start over. Details are kept pretty vague, but it mostly works.

News:: First leaked trailer for Shenmue III looks true to form

Shenmue III was announced all the way back in June of 2015, and it's set for release sometime before the end of this year. There's just one problem -- we haven't really...seen it yet, outside of still screens.

That changes this week. Shown off live at the Magic Monaco event at the Grimaldi Forum this past weekend with a big "do not record" notification, it seems like we have our first inkling of what Shenmue III looks like in action. The character designs, the music, the locales, and the thematic QTEs, battles, and arcade machine? Check!

It's all looking pretty authentic, even if the character models themselves seem rough. If this is what's arriving later this year I'll be okay with it on paper even if it looks like a game from 1999.

News:: 'Papers, Please' official short film recreates the game's bleak tone

The official Papers, Please short film has been a long time in coming, but it's finally here... and if you're a fan of the game's grim Soviet Bloc atmosphere, you're in for a treat. The 11-minute production includes plenty of nods to the title's nerve-wracking customs checks, such as the dread you feel when you're not quite sure you should have let someone through. It also touches on the game's underlying theme -- how do you maintain some shred of humanity in a job that's frequently heartless? Be sure to turn subtitles on, by the way, as the dialogue is appropriately Russian.
