News:: Frostpunk clears 250K sales, devs pledge free updates and expansions

This War of Mine developer 11 bit studios is onto something special with Frostpunk, its newly-released "society survival game." In just over two days, the title passed 250,000 sales, with 11 bit CEO Grzegorz Miechowski confirming post-release support. "Yes, we had plans for the expansions and now we're 100% sure we are doing that, including many free updates of course!"

The team is currently prioritizing bug fixes and balance tweaks, but it has "A LOT of ideas" for potential updates, including new scenarios and modes, and also wants to hear player suggestions. An endless mode is one such possibility. "Frostpunk is going to grow - all you have to do right now is to wait a little bit. We do plan to release a roadmap for our development plans as soon as we're ready."

Our review is in the works, so if you're on the fence, please look forward to that soon.

Post-release update and a huge THANK YOU! [Steam]

News:: PixelJunk Monsters 2 has a short but sweet demo on PS4 and PC

I was delighted to hear that Q-Games was making a sequel to PixelJunk Monsters. I like the whole PixelJunk line, but Monsters is a particular highlight -- it's one of my favorite tower defense games ever.

The studio has released a demo for PixelJunk Monsters 2 on PlayStation Network (North America here, Europe here, Steam here) and while it's super short -- just a single level without co-op functionality, as far as I can tell -- it's worth checking out for fans. You've got to see the cute little Chibis up close.

The game looks incredible and plays like you'd expect. I mean that in a good way.

As Tikiman, you'll run around converting trees into towers (arrow, cannon, and anti-air). Slain enemies drop coins and sometimes gems, the latter of which can be used to buy limited-use fruit bombs or tower upgrades. Alternatively, you can dance! Standing near a tower will slowly upgrade it (up to five tiers), but since dropped coins only stay on the field for so long before disappearing, your attention is always divided. Figuring out where to be and for how long is the name of the game.

The demo lets you run around in a hub world, albeit with some gates to keep you from exploring too much, and you can spend currency earned from clearing levels and reaching milestones on new masks and shells. I feel like this game will shine the most in co-op (local and online in the full version), but the demo makes a strong impression. The sequel's move to 3D feels like the right decision.

PixelJunk Monsters 2 is coming to PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 25 for $15.

News:: Classic SNK shmup Ghost Pilots takes flight on PS4, Xbox One and Switch

This week's retro re-release from HAMSTER will see players take to the skies for fast-paced dog-fighting action, as SNK's Ghost Pilots is out now on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Originally released back in 1991 for the arcade and Neo Geo platforms, Ghost Pilots sees one or two players take flight in - bizarrely - seaplanes, on a dangerous mission to halt a Nazi offence. The game is similar to Capcom's 1942 and 1943: Battle of Midway, both of which were incredibly popular in the arcades in the mid-to-late '80s.

Our heroes will be assaulted from land, sea and air, before eventually being confronted by intimidating boss characters. It's a pretty tough mission, but power-ups and a selection of bomb-types are available to help give you the upper hand in battle.

Ghost Pilots is available now on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch worldwide, and on PS4 in Japan.

News:: Monster Hunter: World's DMC event is now live

Devil May Cry's Dante is now available in Monster Hunter: World via a special event quest. Dubbed "Code Red," the quest will grant you the ability to dress your character up as the stylish slayer upon completion. You'll also unlock Dante's signature sword, which takes the form of a charge blade.

The event can be found at the arena and carries an eight star rating. You'll need to be hunter rank 14 to try it, though that doesn't take too long to get to. The objective is to simply hunt all target monsters, so even that won't require you to jump through weird hoops to get the armor. Capcom has also released the schedule for future events along with a short clip of Dante doing a pose. This should help get you suitably hyped for the future of World.

News:: New trailer brings Theodore to Persona Dancing's expanding DLC catalogue

Although more used to being a bellboy, it's now the turn of Theodore - from Persona 3 Portable - to act as guest, as he will be available for download in Atlus' upcoming titles Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night.

A new trailer shows us the Velvet Room assistant shaking his wild thang on the dance floor, before he is eventually joined by his sister Elizabeth. In Persona 3 Portable, Theodore only appears if the player chooses to play as the female protagonist, who lends further confusion as to why she herself is yet to show up in the rhythm-action game's roster.

Theodore will be post-release DLC for either dance title, as will the recently revealed Persona 4 Arena stars Sho Minazuki and Labyrys. Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are both set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita.

News:: Shadow of the Tomb Raider's DLC plans include monthly challenge tombs

Square Enix has opened up about its DLC plans for Shadow of the Tomb Raider. After launch on September 14, the game will get seven content drops -- one a month -- from October through April.

"The Season Pass delivers seven new adventures called 'Paths,' with each Path including new narrative, new missions, a Challenge Tomb, a new weapon, a new outfit and a new skill. The first Challenge Tomb will also introduce new co-op functionality. Finally, Season Pass owners receive an exclusive weapon, outfit, and skill on Day One!"

How extensive this content is remains to be seen, but I like that monthly schedule.

I've had a decent enough time with the prior two games, so I'm definitely down to finish out the trilogy. The new Mayan apocalypse backdrop speaks to me. That said, I can already envision myself waiting for Shadow's eventual "game of the year" re-release with all of this DLC bundled together.

News:: Fox is making a Choose Your Own Adventure interactive movie

At CinemaCon, Fox has announced that it will be making a film and possibly more based on the Choose Your Own Adventure book series. This blurs the line between film and game the same way that '80s VCR games did, but with hopefully better results.

The film will use an app called CtrlMovie to allow theater audiences to choose from a number of options at pivotal story moments, and the choice with the most votes will win. If you ever wanted groups of people shouting answers like they're watching Jeopardy at something you paid twenty dollars to see, this should be a dream come true.

News:: Magic: The Gathering Arena adds in Dominaria expansion alongside the paper version

Right now Magic: The Gathering Arena is in its beta phase for an "undetermined amount of time" before it's actually unleashed upon the world.

As such it's currently running on cards that are cycling in and out of standard play in the real world version of the game (with the exception of Kaladesh and Aether Revolt) -- and that means new expansions are set to arrive at the same time as their paper counterparts.

Dominaria, the next set of cards, just launched yesterday in Arena. You can now buy Dominaria cards for 1000 coins a pack, or win them as part of the new set of weekly rewards (Rivals of Ixalan has cycled out of the reward list). Right now tech for the new expansion is very early, but I've seen some really mean decks involving Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and other Planeswalker cards. There's also a few smaller sleeper cards in the set I'm looking at trying out in the paper version and Arena.

I can dig this single release cycle!

News:: Are ports and rereleases enough to keep your 3DS turned on through 2019 and beyond?

The Nintendo 3DS is sitting at a whopping 72 million units sold around the world. Despite the hot, new Switch on the scene, the seven-year-old family of systems is still selling. Given Nintendo's propensity for quickly abandoning its hardware once something better comes along, many people have been wondering when Nintendo is going to send the 3DS to go live on a farm upstate.

But the company has long-term plans. Earlier in the year, a Nintendo Direct revealed more titles on their way to the system. WarioWare Gold, Luigi's Mansion, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Bowser's Inside Story, the latter of which is scheduled for 2019, joined two other previously revealed titles destined for the handheld device. At its 2017 Financial Results Briefing, Nintendo announced it plans to support the Nintendo 3DS line through 2019 and beyond. In fact, it says it's prepping new software for the device. Whether that amounts to anything more than what's been revealed remains to be seen. Either way, the 3DS ain't dead yet.

I adore my Nintendo 2DS XL. It comes with me everywhere. I'm still buying software for it. I just picked up Shovel Knight and you can bet your ass I'll be getting WarioWare Gold and Luigi's Mansion once they hit my local Best Buy. But as the time of the 3DS comes to a close, I wonder if this is what we can expect going forward. I'm all for supporting the handheld -- and there are great third-party games potentially still on the way -- but I wonder if I'll care in 2019 if all Nintendo is offering are ports of games I already own.

Don't get me wrong, Treasure Tracker is one of my favorite games on the Wii U. It's great, but for me, that's the only version I'm going to own. It's enough, though I urge anyone who hasn't played it to do so, either on Switch or 3DS. The same goes for Bowser's Inside Story. It's one of the best games on the DS, but I don't know if it's good enough to warrant a second playthrough with every other game that's on the horizon. Going forward, it's going to become more difficult to convince myself to buy updated version of games I already own, something I've done with some regularity in the past.

If it's a new game, I will gladly clear my calendar. I did it last year with Ever Oasis, Miitopia, Metroid: Samus Returns, and Pokémon: Ultra Sun. I happily made time for those games the same way I'll happily make time for Persona Q2 and Etrian Odyssey X should they find their way to our shores. But if all I'm left with from Nintendo are ports like Mansion or re-releases like WarioWare Gold, it may be time I start thinking about winding down my relationship with one of the best gaming devices I've ever owned.

That's me. What about you? Will you keep buying games for your 3DS if all Nintendo releases are ports or do you need something new? Or have you already tossed yours in the closet?

News:: Sony announces 79 million PS4s have shipped worldwide

Hot off the heels of Nintendo's big financial result briefing, in which they revealed that Super Mario Odyssey was the top-selling Switch game and that Switch hardware sales targets were being met, Sony has divulged some info of their own.

They've announced that they've shipped 79 million PS4 units worldwide, and that 2.5 million of those came from the fourth quarter, and 19 million were shipped throughout the fiscal year, ending in March 31, 2018. That's roughly a million less than the previous year, a sign that the avalanche of PS4 sales is slowing a bit.

Finally, there's more projections -- they want to ship 16 million more by March 31, 2019. If Sony manages to meet that goal and further push into the 102 million territory, they'd dethrone the Wii and enter the top five all-time best-selling console list, sitting side by side with the original PlayStation, which ended its life with 102.49 million units.

News:: Wild West Online gets Steam launch date and new trailer

Action-MMO Wild West Online has announced that it will be leaving Early Access and officially launching on Steam May 10.

Wild West Online, by developer 612 Games, is an open-world MMO set in, funnily enough, the wicky-wicky-Wild-Wild West. Players can explore the vast wilderness of America's pioneering era, with various activities such as mining and farming on offer, as well as the more common past-time of killin'. Players can play as peacekeeper of justice or a rugged outlaw, although the path on both sides is flexible.

The game will be adding a slew of new features at launch, including more content for both PvE and PvP mode. There will also be a global faction system which will see players battle it out over control of territories. New activities such as alcohol brewing and cooking are also on the way.

Players who pre-purchase the game will be allowed to jump into Early Access today, and will get a 48-hour headstart on the game when it officially releases. Not only that, but they will receive a bonus selection of cosmetic items with which to customise their avatar and weaponry.

News:: Here's a quick look at some new original Mega Man X series music

Both Mega Man X Legacy Collections are coming on July 24, and as it turns out we're getting a decent amount of original content alongside of the standard re-releases of Mega Man X1-X8.

In addition to some new gallery extras and the brand new "X Challenge" mode that pits you against multiple bosses, we're getting new music, too. Capcom just put up a quick sample on their YouTube channel, which you can listen to below.

I'll say it definitely sounds like something more inline with something the series would host from around the X5-X6 era -- combined with a hint of SNK at the start -- I can dig it.

News:: Details about Nintendo Switch Online service to be revealed next month

Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima, speaking in the company's latest financial report, has said that detailed information pertaining to the launch of the Nintendo Switch Online service will be revealed early in May.

"Nintendo Switch Online, a paid subscription service that will expand the online functionality of Nintendo Switch, will begin in September of this year," stated Kimishima. "The service will provide consumers with a richness of online features that allow them to continuously enjoy Nintendo Switch. More information will be presented on our website in early May."

Little is known about the features that Switch Online will bring to the table. We do know that it is priced substantially less than similar subscription services offered by PlayStation and Xbox, expected to cost around $20 per year. The service will allow for online play and access to a library of classic games

Hopefully we'll find out what else your twenty bucks will get you when full details hit early May.

News:: You too can grab this hideous new costume in Super Mario Odyssey

Although I adored Mario Odyssey, the Broodals, the new evil rabbit enemies, were kind of a take it or leave it affair for me. There was nothing inherently wrong with them, and in the grand scheme of things their presence and even their short boss fights aren't even a fraction of the game's length -- they just creep me out.

That goes double for this new outfit, which allows Mario to basically wear the skin of his fallen foes. Nintendo has added in a Topper costume, which is based on the leader of the Broodals. After grabbing the update you'll need to play on a file that's beaten the game, then you can grab the suit for 3,000 coins and the hat for 1,500.

It's nice that little updates like this keep trickling in, but wear this outfit at your own risk.

News:: A snarky recap of Marvel's MCU before Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War is looking set to dominate the box office for the next few weeks, but not every person has seen all of the previous films. Since every geek-centered website already has a recap for the uninitiated, we over at Flixist decided that we’d try a different approach. Enter me; a guy that has only casually been interested in Marvel films and hasn’t even seen them all.

I’ve got a feeling that a lot of people seeing Infinity War will be in the same boat as me. As such, I’ve decided to provide a recap from my perspective so that the uninitiated don’t feel so alone. To clarify, I’m not using Wikipedia to fill in any details I’ve forgotten. I’ve also only seen each film once, save for the original Iron Man and Iron Man 3 that I’ve watched twice. This means I might be getting some details wrong, so I apologize in advance.

Without further delay, let’s get into all the pertinent details from each film you’ll need to better understand Infinity War on Friday.

News:: Review: Avengers: Infinity War

Yes, I invoked The Last Jedi, and no that's not because I want to instantly guarantee 11 million comments on the post. It's because, like that film but to a lesser extent, Avengers: Infinity War is not the movie you're expecting, often throwing what you'd thought you'd get away and delivering something you didn't know you wanted. It is, at times, melancholy, silent, thoughtful, emotional, and completely devoid of action. Major action set pieces disappear from the film for long stretches while it -- shocker -- develops its characters, only to return all the more powerful and complex because of it.

This isn't to say that Infinity War isn't big and bold and prolific and full of everything you've come to expect from Marvel, but it's also quiet in ways you wouldn't even have thought. And this all stems from the least likely culprit for a Marvel movie: the villain.

News:: Trailblazers looks like it could scratch that F-Zero itch, and it's also coming to Switch

We knew that Trailblazers was coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch later this spring, but some extra footage to help paint a picture of what the game is all about doesn't hurt.

The gist is that the entire game is framed around 3v3 racing in a co-op style, where players are trying to paint the track. As you "boost your color" the racing line is altered, and skill points earned while racing also play a factor. Trailblazers will support six players online and four player split-screen play.

Its release window has been narrowed down to May. Between this and OnRush, and GRIP, there's plenty of arcade racers to choose from in the near future it seems.

News:: Why isn't Crystal Dynamics the lead developer on Shadow of the Tomb Raider?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was officially revealed minutes ago, and it looks great. We played it for the better part of an hour, and it hits all the notes that we've come to expect from a new Tomb Raider game. For our detailed thoughts on the conclusion to Lara Croft's reboot trilogy, check out our hands-on preview.

However, something significant has changed for this installment. Crystal Dynamics was the lead studio on Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. But, Eidos Montreal is the lead on Shadow. It seems odd for Crystal Dynamics to not take the helm for the finale of what it started.

We asked Eidos Montreal narrative director Jason Dozois why the swap, and we received this answer. "It's a collaboration. So on the previous game, Rise of the Tomb Raider, they were the lead developer. But people in Montreal, a fair-sized team, helped with content. Same thing here. They help us create content. We really had a lot of dialogue and collaboration with [Crystal Dynamics.]"

Dozois continued "We've been collaborating with them for eight, nine years -- all the way back to [Deus Ex:] Human Revolution. It's like new flavors. I was happy to try something else when I finished [Deus Ex:] Mankind Divided. You don't want to always do the same thing. It gets stale. You want to switch it up and let a new team take over."

Lead game designer Heath Smith added: "At Eidos Montreal, one of the strengths we believe in is the social experience, the hub experience like from Deus Ex. We wanted to bring that flavor. It fit perfectly with Lara's arc, where she needs to go and grow. I think that's why Eidos Montreal is the perfect choice."

It's undoubtedly a collaboration and maybe everyone has a "share the spotlight" mentality. It still feels like a flimsy answer. Crystal Dynamics is the Tomb Raider studio. It hasn't made a single non-Tomb Raider or Lara Croft game since 2005. To take away the conclusion of the generally-excellent reboot after it led the charge on the first two-thirds seems like an unfortunate relegation for Crystal Dynamics.

[Disclosure: Travel and accommodations were provided by Square Enix.]

News:: Shadow of the Tomb Raider promises Lara's most dangerous and terrifying adventure yet

Square Enix's 2013 Tomb Raider showed us a Lara Croft we had never seen before. For decades, the only Lara we knew was an iconic action star -- confidently dual-wielding pistols while running, jumping, and gunning her way through any situation. The reboot aimed to show Lara's formative moments. She was vulnerable and scared for once, just trying to survive.

With Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara will become the Tomb Raider.

Square Enix emphasizes and re-emphasizes this point many times over the course of our in-person Shadow of the Tomb Raider presentation. This is the conclusion of a trilogy, but, more importantly, this is the end to Lara's arc of personal growth. She's more experienced and more skilled. She's going to have what lead developer Eidos Montreal calls "a defining moment." And hopefully all that means something beyond "She murders better."

News:: In ‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’, Lara Croft has the skills to survive

2013's Tomb Raider redrew the beginnings of Lara Croft. Pretty much a teenager, she learned what she needed to survive. Two years later, in Rise of the Tomb Raider, her skills were refined and she seemed more in control, less hunted. The games did a good job of conveying this through the story and cutscenes and, crucially, the game itself, with skills being unlocked and earned as you progressed. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, then, is where Lara Croft embodies the powerful adventurer of decades past. I played through an early 45-minute preview and while it didn't touch too much on how Lara will grow this time around, she's at least found help in unusual places.

News:: Nintendo partners up for a money-printing mobile RPG

With all eyes on the Switch and the console's new Labo cardboard peripherals, it's easy to forget Nintendo is now very much a mobile game developer, too. In Nintendo's latest financials, however, its mobile games received only a passing mention, and Mario Kart Tour is still a ways off. But it turns out Nintendo has other mobile titles in the pipeline. It's been working with developer Cygames on Dragalia Lost, a Japanese-style action RPG. You may know Cygames as the company behind the digital card game Shadowverse, but otherwise it typically makes titles aimed squarely at the Japanese market, like the hugely popular Granblue Fantasy.

News:: Sony's business stabilizes with strong PS4 game sales

Sony's latest earnings reveal a simple truth: former CEO Kaz Hirai left the company in a relatively good position. In the full year leading up to March 31st, 2018, the company raked in revenue of 8,544 billion yen (roughly $78.1 billion) and operating income, or profit, of 734.9 billion yen (roughly $6.7 billion). The latter figure is a huge improvement over the $2.6 billion it managed to pull in last time. The bump, however, was expected; in the last financial year, Sony's camera imaging business was rocked by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Now, that crucial division is back at full strength.
