News:: PQube Games is spreading the Muv-Luv to Vita this year

Muv-Luv is a game I immediately confuse with Moe Chronicle everytime it's brought up. I don't know why I do that, I just do. So consider my surprise when I heard PQube Games, publishers of such wholesome titles as Gal*Gun: Double Peace and the upcoming Omega Labyrinth Z, was bringing the Vita ports of the game to North America and Europe in 2018. "What the hell did they cut out of the game to make that happen?" I asked myself before being turned onto the fact that Muv-Luv and Moe Chronicle are two different games. Now it made more sense.

Muv-Luv, what PQube is billing as "widely considered to be among the finest experiences the Visual novel artform has to offer" was originally only available outside of Japan on PC after a very successful Kickstarter campaign. In 2016, Muv-Luv and it's follow-up, Muv-Luv Alternative, were ported to the Vita in Japan after previously appearing on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. This summer, the games will come west in both physical and digital formats.

News:: Detective Pikachu finds another co-star with Rita Ora

Actress, singer, and TV host Rita Ora will be joining Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Bill Nighy, Suki Waterhouse, and Ken Watanabe in Legendary Entertainment’s 2019 Pokemon film, Detective Pikachu. I have to say the cast for this film is… shockingly impressive.

Ora is fresh off finishing up her role as Christian Grey’s sister Mia in the Fifty Shades series, so it looks like she’s going hard on diversifying her roles. She’ll also soon appear alongside Carrie Fisher in her final non-Star Wars film, Wonderwell.

Last year she took over hosting America’s Next Top Model after Tyra Banks decided to move behind the camera, but was herself replaced by...Tyra Banks, presumably after Tyra realized how much she missed attention.

Ora’s role in the movie is unannounced. My money is on a member of Team Rocket, and hopefully not a femme fatale Pikachu love interest.

Detective Pikachu is set to premiere May 10, 2019.

News:: The Overwatch League is getting a more reasonable schedule

Last Saturday was such a great day for competitive Overwatch.

The Overwatch League held its Stage 1 Finals and as a fan of London Spitfire, there sure were some highs and lows. The team lost to New York Excelsior early in the day only to grind it out, topple the Houston Outlaws, and face NYXL again that evening. During the best-of-five title match, London was down two maps. It was looking grim. But in a show of endurance, they rallied. Some exceptional Widowmaker play by Birdring snowballed into back-to-back-to-back wins on Horizon Lunar Colony, Numbani, and finally Dorado. London Spitfire ended up taking the Stage 1 title along with $100,000.

It was a memorable event, don't get me wrong, but boy did it stretch on.

For Stage 2 of the Overwatch League, Blizzard is making a few much-needed scheduling changes:

  • The weekday schedule will be standardized, with all Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday matches now starting at 4:00pm Pacific.
  • Saturday matches will begin at 1:00pm Pacific.
  • The Stage Finals are shifting to Sunday at 1:00pm Pacific "to help prevent fatigue on the part of players (and fans), and to properly highlight the Stage Finals playoff and championship games." For Stage 2, the finals will happen on March 25.

It's a tricky thing scheduling for viewers around the world, but I think this is an improvement.

I'm stoked for Stage 2 next week. New players are entering the fold, the incoming meta shift should put less emphasis on Mercy, and there are great rematches coming up. I wanna see shakeups.

News:: The 300 Week 6: Old School and Indie Cred

Welcome back yet again to The 300, a weekly feature chronicling my attempt to see 300 movies on the big screen in 2018. I'll be watching new releases, classics, and hidden gems to explore the wide world of cinema. Hopefully you'll find something to enjoy here as well.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I've seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

Looked over some of my numbers and apparently I sure love Metrograph. This fancypants indie theater in the Lower East Side has excellent programming, solid food, coffee, tea, booze, and free Wi-Fi. Of the 47 feature films I've seen thus far, 18 have been at Metrograph. Assuming this feature continues through the year without a snag, I wonder if I'll hit triple digits at Metrograph alone... and if they'll force me to sign a lease.

On the opposite side of things, I will not be going to the Alamo Drafthouse again until Tim and Karrie League step down. Splinter ran a feature last week about all of the Drafthouse's issues with sexual assault and harassment. While the local franchise owners seem like good people, change at the top needs to happen before I go back again.

And so, onward.

News:: 'Dab on 'em Haterz' turns surviving the internet into a game

Last month, Dab on 'em Haterz launched on Steam, an indie game that puts the player in charge of a YouTube creator who must sift through comments and presumably stay sane in the process. It's up to our hero to give negative feedback a good dabbing that banishes it from his queue and nets him some money. But it's in his head, of course. Forever scraping away at his self-confidence and belief in humanity. Yes, Dab on 'em Haterz seems a microcosm of living on the internet in 2018.

News:: 11 new games added to GOG Connect

Good Old Games is one of the better consumer-friendly digital marketplaces because it provides you with DRM-free games and usually has some goodies thrown in for older games.

Over the past year and a half, GOG has been allowing you to connect your Steam and GOG accounts so that every so often, select games in your Steam library are eligible to be unlocked DRM-free in your GOG library. It's a nice little service they provide that in all reality they don't need to but a lot of the time these eligible games are announced without much hoopla. I'd like to change that and from here on out will be trying to keep an eye on what games are eligible to be redeemed...

News:: Contest: We're giving away 10 copies of Genital Jousting. Also, cocks!

Every once in a while something comes along that's so remarkably on-brand for us that it's hard for us to say no. We long for the opportunity to get our hands on it, and savor every last drop. Genital Jousting, a game where you play as a dick with a butthole, is the best example of this.

In his review, Peter says, "Genital Jousting is crude, for certain, but it showcases how imaginative and creative gaming can truly be. When I was a child, I never thought I’d have the fortune of playing as a flaccid dick in a game, but look where we are." If that doesn't get you nice and turgid for this game, nothing will.

Except for this.

News:: Xbox party chat launches on Android and iOS

It's now easier to keep up with your Xbox gaming pals when you've ventured beyond the living room. After several weeks of public testing, Microsoft has launched party chat in its Xbox apps for Android and iOS. If you use Xbox Live, you can use this to your fellow party members through voice or text wherever you happen to be. That can be helpful if you want to keep up with an in-game raid while you're rushing home, or if you just want to leave a party channel open as a semi-permanent group chat.

News:: Co-op sci-fi mining game Deep Rock Galactic hits PC and Xbox One soon

Deep Rock Galactic is a sci-fi shooter about dwarven space miners teaming up on an alien planet to punch through caves, collect minerals, and get the goods back home. As a solo experience, I probably wouldn't be super interested. But as a four-person, class-based co-op joint? I'm down.

Developer Ghost Ship Games is prepping the game for PC and Xbox One. It'll appear on Steam Early Access, the Windows 10 Store, and Xbox One (as a Game Preview title) on February 28, 2018.

"We're mixing the traditional co-op shooter with all the goodness of huge procedural levels, lots of exploration and mining, and all the personality of fantasy dwarves – but in a sci-fi setting," says game director Mikkel Martin Pedersen.

The Early Access and Game Preview build of Deep Rock Galactic will start out with seven biomes on the alien-infested planet Hoxxes. You can read up on everything else the team is planning over here.

If this takes off, I'd like to see a Starship Troopers mod.

News:: Here's a good gameplay video of Ni No Kuni 2's cathropomorphic King Evan

Some people are cats! And some of those feline-humans are also royalty. Admittedly, the Venn Diagram doesn't have a ton of overlap. Actually, it's pretty much just Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom's King Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum in the middle all by his lonesome.

Bandai Namco is kind of on a roll today with Ni No Kuni videos. Earlier, we got a look at Goldpaw -- a casino town where gambling looks to be critically intertwined with religion. Now it's this 10-minute gameplay video of King Evan.

For anyone looking to save on time, it's a bunch of easy-seeming battles until a level 5 porc chopper makes his way into the fray. Also, there's a kind-hearted merchant with little business savvy. But watching the video is the better option because seeing these visuals in action is the real treat.

News:: The Bug Fables demo took me 17 years to the past

Crowdfunded games are a gamble. We’ve seen the likes of Mighty No. 9 go from extreme anticipation to an underwhelming launch. We've even seen games that fail to release altogether. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for projects that offer prototypes, demos, or other forms of early gameplay. It's nice to see evidence that work has already been put into the game, that it has a clear vision and that it’s heading in a direction I personally enjoy. Having tried Bug Fables’ demo, available on its Indiegogo campaign, I can safely file that game under the “I’m excited” category.

See, Bugs Fables is the most Paper Mario a game has ever been since The Thousand-Year Door. And that’s something worth looking into.

One thing immediately struck me as I began playing Bug Fables. The visual effects are on point. The characters flip while moving just like you'd expect, houses come undone when entering just like you'd expect, transitions between screens are from lone platforms just like you'd expect. It's impressive, seeing how close the game gets to Paper Mario's vision, and its polish as well.

News:: The Evil Within 2 goes first-person with a new update

There was a hidden first-person mode lurking in the PC version of The Evil Within 2, and sure enough, folks found out about it and figured out how to toggle it with an easy-to-use console command. It was a neat little extra for anyone who wanted to see the game's nightmare world up close.

In a decidedly cool turn of events, Tango Gameworks now officially supports first-person mode on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Today's update for The Evil Within 2 adds a toggle to the options menu.

Here's a spoiler-y preview:

During development, first-person mode was "more of an afterthought and a little bit of playing around on our side," according to producer Shinsaku Ohara. But when PC players found the mode and really took to it, the team reconsidered and decided to officially support it on all platforms.

"We like to think of it as a 'high-level hack' so we don't want people to compare this with DOOM or anything like that," says Ohara. "There were some scenes that just didn't work, so it jumps back and forth a bit to third-person. But we made sure the game's an enjoyable experience and hopefully people will enjoy playing in this mode."

News:: ‘Where The Water Tastes Like Wine’ arrives on February 28th

Two years ago, a trailer dropped at The Game Awards that promised a story about stories. In Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, players would trek across a dusty America, meeting vagabonds and trading tales while folk music trailed in the background. We knew the title was coming early this year even as more exciting news stole headlines, like adding Sting to the voice cast. But we won't have to wait much longer: Where the Water Tastes Like Wine will arrive on February 28th and retail for $20 on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux.

News:: China gets a live action PUBG trailer that is surprisingly awesome

In a move reminiscent of all those Call of Duty live action ads, PUBG Corp has created a live action trailer for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. This is to commemorate the launch of the two Chinese mobile games and just...wow. I'm honestly surprised how much this looks like the actual game. Where the hell was this filmed?

Seeing as how PUBG Corp wants to expand the "franchise" into different avenues, I could definitely see a film working after watching this. It looks hyper intense and all the various different costume pieces are pretty easy to replicate. While there isn't much in the way or a story, I could see a plot resembling the film Battle Royale, just with kids at school playing on their phones.

Actually, that sounds kind of stupid. Let's just leave it at this trailer.

News:: There's a game called PC Building Simulator and that's the only way you'll see a reasonably-priced GPU

Assembling a PC from scratch is especially draining right about now. It always takes a fair amount of effort and resources to find and order all the components you want, and then to actually put the machine together. But, the cryptocurrency boom has virtually all video cards in short supply which means that they're selling for drastically inflated prices. It's not uncommon to see GPUs going for more than double their MSRP.

However, inside a video game is a place where GPUs will never be in short supply. A game called PC Building Simulator goes into Early Access on March 27, and you can probably guess what it's all about. It teaches users how all the different parts function and then walks them through the step-by-step of building a PC.

PC Building Simulator made the thrilling announcement today that MSI is an official partner that will be featured in the game, and that the Z370 and Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon mobos will be included. (Hey, it's probably thrilling to somebody.) Other partners are: Cooler Master, EVGA, Futuremark, NZXT, and Raijintek.

Because it feels extra-pertinent in this situation, here are the system requirements to run PC Building Simulator:

News:: Sea of Thieves is running a 'scale test' this weekend

There will be a couple more chances to play Sea of Thieves before it launches on March 20.

Rare is planning to hold a "scale test" for its open-sea multiplayer pirate adventure game from Friday, February 16 at 2:00am Pacific until Monday, February 19 at 2:00am Pacific. If you participated in the recent closed beta, you're all set to jump back in. Xbox Insiders are also invited to play.

Content-wise, it'll be the same as before, though the stress test will bring about some technical funkiness. Rare expects to see problems like: sessions being interrupted, the inability to join games at certain times during the weekend, and issues with using the shops in-game.

Following this weekend's test, Rare plans to run another closed beta closer to launch which will give players "a taste of the wider Sea of Thieves experience." I might just hold off for that one.

News:: Video game records are broken. Can anyone fix them?

After a period of relative quiet, Twin Galaxies (TG) recently found itself thrust into the spotlight. The arbiter for video-game record keeping played an intrinsic role in disputing two long-standing achievements hosted on its forums: Todd Rogers' unbeatable Dragster time and Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong high score. Both records have had their share of challenges over the decades, but before users on the TG forums raised their concerns the other week, nothing was done to officially dispute them.

In 1982, Rogers sent Dragster developer Activision a letter saying he'd finished a race in 5.51-seconds -- without proof -- and in return he received a certificate saying he held the record.

For many, Mitchell is the "King of Kong" thanks to his appearance in a documentary by the same name. He has recorded higher scores since, but allegedly, Mitchell's 2010 best wasn't recorded on an actual Donkey Kong cabinet, but a MAME emulator. (We reached out to Mitchell and Rogers for comment, but they haven't responded.)

According to Jace Hall, TG's head custodian of records, it was only a matter of time before these disputes happened.

News:: Darksiders III and Biomutant getting DRM free versions on GOG

While Valve's Steam might be the dominant force for digital PC marketplaces, GOG.com has slowly been expanding its library to match the digital juggernaut. A lot of people prefer DRM free versions of games not tied to a digital launcher (even if Steam has a bunch of DRM free titles), so GOG has struck a deal that is sure to please fans. Darksiders III and Biomutant will be on GOG and be DRM free.

As well as those titles, This is The Police 2 and Fade to Silence will also be joinging GOG's catalogue. You can already nab Fade to Silence on Steam, but the former title still has no release date. In fact, the Darksiders III and Biomutant also don't have a release date, so chances are those games will be ready day and date with the Steam versions.

While I have no personal grudge against Steam's implementation of DRM, it is good to have options in the PC space. This is one of the things console manufacturers haven't embraced, meaning deals tend to be less impressive than they otherwise could be. Maybe one day our PS4's and Xbox One's will be able to connect to GOG or Steam, because I'd love to be able to nab digital console games for cheaper.

News:: Mass Effect: Andromeda is still truckin' with a new multiplayer patch

Mass Effect: Andromeda might have shipped over two million copies, but it had a disastrous effect on BioWare's image -- not unlike Bungie's recent Destiny 2 troubles. Not only did the myriad glitches and lack of post-launch support hurt the company's profile, but BioWare Montreal was merged into Motive Studios as a result. What once was a glorious new beginning for Mass Effect started to look like the end.

But it's not entirely the end, at least nominally. BioWare is still putting out small multiplayer updates for Andromeda, including one that launched this week. Presented with a no comment "Here are the latest updates to Mass Effect: Andromeda Multiplayer," like the developer is collectively reading the room and doesn't want to address the dark state of the game, a number of balance changes have been deployed.

It's not much but many weapons have been straight-up buffed when it comes to clip size and ammo capacity, which should lead to more fun times blasting up aliens. It's been a while but I may jump back in for a match or two.

News:: Call of Duty live-action movie signs Sicario 2 director

We guess we should be eating our words now, because a Call of Duty movie is probably happening. Activision Blizzard Studios, a real film and television studio as of 2015, is bullish on bringing their mega-franchise to the big screen, with Variety reporting that Sicario 2: Soldado director Stefano Sollima is attached to direct.

Sollima succeeded original Sicario director Denis Villeneuve, who departed to direct Blade Runner 2049.

The film will be produced by studio presidents Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, along with Activision Blizzard CEO and Moneyball superstar Bobby Kotick. Snowden scribe Kieran Fitzgerald is on screenwriting duties, but the film, which is said to be the start of a "Call of Duty cinematic universe" (undoubtedly a terrifying phrase), has yet to gain a distributor.

Now one must wonder what the hell these movies would be about. These films are said to not adapt specific stories from the series, but rather draw from the "feel" of the video games. But seeing how these video games are ripped straight from Band of Brothers, Michael Bay movies and 1980s action flicks, the exercise of adapting Call of Duty to film eventually becomes an infinite feedback loop.

We'll see how Sollima fares when Sicario 2: Soldado releases in theaters on June 29. Meanwhile, the closest things we have to a live-action Call of Duty movie are various live-action trailers, so we can imagine that a full-length movie would basically be like those, but on repeat.

News:: 'The Evil Within 2' has a new first-person mode for up-close horror

Originally released in October of last year, The Evil Within 2 is a bleak, tense take on the horror genre, where exploration and discovery are just as important as the scares. The game was designed as a third-person experience, much like producer Shinji Mikami's famous Resident Evil series. Now, however, developer Tango Gameworks has launched a free update that will make the entire game playable in first person perspective.

News:: Former Switch exclusive Never Stop Sneakin' is coming to PC this month

Never Stop Sneakin’ kind of snuck onto the scene, literally. I mean it was a Metal Gear Solid homage from the developer of the incredible Dust: An Elysian Tale, and launched as a Switch exclusive in the very packed month of December 2017. You'd think there would be a little more fanfare, but it's arriving on another platform soon enough.

As announced by way of a Steam landing page, Sneakin' will arrive on PC this month. An exact date or price isn't given, but since the Switch edition is $14.99, you can probably bet it'll be around that range.

Although many have said the game suffers from a middling execution of some of its concepts, the premise alone is wacky enough to warrant a look: "The Department of Sneakin' is the world's most elite stealth agency. Your mission: stop time-traveling master criminal Amadeus Guildenstern."

News:: Ni No Kuni 2 takes us to the wondrous, seedy world of Goldpaw

I'm ready for Ni No Kuni 2. I was ready when it was supposed to arrive last month. Hell, I was ready the day after I finished the original. As flawed as it was in some areas it provided me with hours of joy, and was one of the few JRPGs in recent years where I just needed to reach a 100% completion rate.

This new trailer for Goldpaw, a venerated casino town, is doing it for me. It's just an overview of the zone -- nothing fancy -- but it does the job of highlighting the signature charm of the Ni No Kuni series. What's really interesting about Goldpaw is that the entire gambling angle is built into their religion of sorts, with high priests (astrologers) rolling dice for trials and public planning meetings.

We'll be able to see it in-game next month when Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom launches on March 23.

News:: This Switch arcade cabinet looks cramped, but neat as a showpiece

I'm not sure if I'd pick one of these up, but if I saw one I'd immediately want to investigate it! A manufacturer in Japan is creating an arcade cabinet of sorts, modeled after the famous "face-to-face" style. It'll house two Switch units into the base, which closes up to replicate an arcade screen, alongside of two Joy-Con for each side.

The separated Joy-Con shtick alone, along with the fact that you'd probably be hunched over on it without the perfect table setup ensures that it's likely going to be uncomfortable, but again it would look pretty cool if I saw it in the wild. Note that the privilege for this cabinet will run you roughly $80 though once it's released.

In the meantime you can find various 3D-printed/custom projects that will run you a lot less. Anyone remember the Red Tent?

News:: Capcom once again addresses the fan-demand for a Monster Hunter: World Switch port

Capcom has been getting hit nonstop with port requests for Monster Hunter: World. And why not? The entire series started off in the portable realm, and odds are the Switch can run a version of it if we're seeing heavy-hitting AAA games like Doom and Wolfenstein II on the platform.

But Capcom didn't plan ahead for the Switch's success, as they started development on World years ago on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Speaking to Toyo Keizai, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, Capcom president, re-iterated that they're aware of said demand: "We’re aware of that request. However, taking into account various conditions, bringing Monster Hunter: World now for release is difficult. The reason is that the Switch has different functions from other stationary consoles as well as different players. Each game console as its own characteristic, and it’s necessary that we, as game makers, adapt to that when making [a game]. From now on, we’re looking at how we can support the Switch with our games, and that also includes Monster Hunter."

This whole situation is pretty easy to explain. A lot of developers, Capcom included, were incredibly sheepish with the Switch following the disastrous Wii U. Many didn't feel like investing too heavily in it; a decision that's biting them in the butt at the moment. Capcom now has to basically weigh if it's worth porting over World now, when they're already hard at work on the PC port, or if they should just wait until the "Plus/Extreme/Kai/Ultra/Universe" version.

News:: Overwatch League signs its first female player

It's official: Overwatch League has its first female player. The Shanghai Dragons have signed Kim "Geguri" Se-yeon as part of a four-player addition. The South Korean teen rose to prominence thanks to her reputation for playing Zarya (one of Overwatch's "tank" characters) so well that she was pressed into a livestreamed skill display to prove that she wasn't cheating. She was also the first female player to compete in her home country's Apex league, one of the game's foremost competitive events until Overwatch League showed up.

News:: THQ Nordic acquires Saints Row publisher Koch Media

This is a big one to wake up to.

When I read the news I thought it was the other way around, but THQ Nordic, the company that single handedly resurrected THQ in 2016, has acquired Koch Media. That name sounds familiar right? Well it owns Deep Silver, the company that not only owns the Saints Row and Dead Island properties, but has been publishing countless other games in various regions around the world. Funnily enough Deep Silver actually took over the mantle of Saint's Row from THQ in 2013.

The deal was struck for EUR 121 million, and based on the announcement, not much is changing. THQ Nordic will acquire the rights to all of Koch Media's properties, including those in the gaming and film arenas. Lars Wingefors, CEO of THQ Nordic, has re-iterated that it's business as usual and the currently planned Koch Media/Deep Silver projects are still happening.

As long as THQ Nordic has enough money to keep funding Darksiders III, I'm good.

News:: Google Play removed thousands of legit ‘Game Dev Tycoon’ reviews

Google has removed some 77 percent of reviews for Game Dev Tycoon's mobile port on Google Play. Developer Greenheart Games contacted Google to find out why the (mostly) five-star reviews were disappearing, and was told that the scores were removed on purpose, with little other explanation. Greenheart's theory is that Google uses the same algorithm to police free-to-play game reviews on the Play store that it does paid games; Game Dev Tycoon costs $5 and you can't write a review unless you've purchased it. Free-to-play games, on the other hand, anyone can write a review with practically no time investment.
