There was a hidden first-person mode lurking in the PC version of The Evil Within 2, and sure enough, folks found out about it and figured out how to toggle it with an easy-to-use console command. It was a neat little extra for anyone who wanted to see the game's nightmare world up close.
In a decidedly cool turn of events, Tango Gameworks now officially supports first-person mode on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Today's update for The Evil Within 2 adds a toggle to the options menu.
Here's a spoiler-y preview:
During development, first-person mode was "more of an afterthought and a little bit of playing around on our side," according to producer Shinsaku Ohara. But when PC players found the mode and really took to it, the team reconsidered and decided to officially support it on all platforms.
"We like to think of it as a 'high-level hack' so we don't want people to compare this with DOOM or anything like that," says Ohara. "There were some scenes that just didn't work, so it jumps back and forth a bit to third-person. But we made sure the game's an enjoyable experience and hopefully people will enjoy playing in this mode."
