News:: Nintendo cutting the price of New 3DS in half for Black Friday

If you're looking to buy a 3DS as a gift or just want to upgrade from an older model so you can play SNES games on the go, you may want to wait a few more weeks. Nintendo announced earlier today that they'll be offering a special edition black or white New 3DS beginning November 25 at a suggested price point of $99.99. This is half of an XL system's normal cost, and more than $20 lower than the historical lowest price point for this model. It's also considerably cheaper than even the entry model 2DS, which still has a recommended price point of $129.99.

The new systems come with exclusive black or white replaceable faceplates embossed with Super Mario characters, items, and enemies. Since they're New 3DS systems, they will have the secondary set of shoulder buttons, the right side analog nub, built in amiibo support, and the upgraded hardware necessary to emulate SNES games. The systems do not come with any pre-installed games or an  A.C. adapter, so you may want to pick one up if you're giving one of these systems as a gift.

Nintendo didn't mention whether this means the price of the 2DS and older 3DS systems will be falling, or whether this is a permanent price reduction. It's pretty clear that Nintendo's looking to capitalize on their current hardware one last time before releasing the Switch. Still, it looks like a great deal for anyone looking to get a 3DS this holiday season, and it comes just after Pokémon Sun and Moon release on the 18th.

News:: Blizzard, On Overwatch's Sombra: 'We're Not Very Good At ARGs'

Before Overwatch’s latest character, Sombra, was unveiled at BlizzCon over the weekend, she was the focal point of an alternate reality game (ARG) that lasted months. It was like a hydra. Fans would reach the end of one countdown, only for the belligerent beast to sprout two more. At BlizzCon, I spoke to two of Overwatch’s designers about that.

News:: Mass Effect 2 and 3 are now backward compatible

N7 day is a pretty big deal, despite me not hearing a damn thing about it. I guess fans are really crazy for Mass Effect; I liked the first two games (especially the second), but I checked out when EA went crazy with Origin and making its games exclusive. I guess I missed out, but maybe not for long.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 are now backward compatible on Xbox One. Major Nelson let the world know through Twitter and fans are pleased (despite one guy calling the series trash). Anyone who grabbed the Mass Effect Trilogy bundle will definitely be ecstatic. All of the downloadable content is also available for the entire series which means you no longer need to hold on to that 360. I wonder if this means that extended ending for Mass Effect 3 is available?

News:: Sombra's now available to play on Blizzard's Public Test Realm

It has been a whirlwind 72 hours for Sombra enthusiasts. We went from hoping the new Overwatch character would be announced at BlizzCon 2016's keynote (she was) to only convention attendees getting to try her out (we did) to everyone getting a turn sometime this week. That "sometime" is now.

Just now, Sombra was added to Blizzard's Public Test Realm. That means that PC players can hop on and play unofficial games while testing out Sombra. It won't necessarily be a quick and easy endeavor, though. At time of writing, several people on the Overwatch forums have reported the queue to be thousands of players long.

There will surely be time to kill while in the PTR's virtual line. It seems like a good time to check out this video of all of Sombra's items. I've got my eyes on that Los Muertos skin and the Undetected intro.

News:: Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered

Pretty much everyone remembers the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Even if you didn't play it, many of your friends probably did, and although GoldenEye 64 and Halo had popularized console shooters far before it, it really brought things into a new era during a more reliable period of online gaming alongside of Gears of War.

Killstreaks, perks, almost everything you know and love (or loathe) in modern shooters, it's all derived from Modern Warfare, for better or worse. And if you haven't experienced it yet, Modern Warfare Remastered is a good way to do it.

News:: Overwatch devs talk Unreal Tournament influence for Sombra, what's to come

If there was one series that dominated BlizzCon, it was Overwatch. Even during press testing sessions, journalists and video personalities alike flocked to try out Sombra, and on the showfloor, it consistently had the longest lines and most action. It's that big.

So when I asked Scott Mercer, principle designer for Overwatch and Rachel Day, effects artist, if anyone predicted this level of success, they were excited to share their thoughts.

News:: 'Mass Effect: Andromeda' cinematic trailer goes full space opera

Kick off this N7 Day (an unofficial Mass Effect holiday for November 7th) with a close look at BioWare's long-awaited Mass Effect:Andromeda. The game's cinematic trailer shows off many of the things we'd expect: space exploration, shootouts and an ominous sounding villain. We also get our closest look yet at the male main character, Ryder. He's one of two twins you'll be able to control; Bioware notably showed off the female Ryder sibling first at E3.

News:: 'Left 4 Dead' creator releases an unfinished campaign

Now that Turtle Rock Studios is no longer working on Evolve, it has some time on its hands... and it's giving veteran gamers a treat. If you have a PC copy of the original Left 4 Dead (one of Turtle Rock's best-known games), you can now install Dam It, an unfinished but playable free campaign that was meant to connect two of the shipping game's stories (Dead Air and Blood Harvest). You start at an airfield and have to make your way through an apple orchard, a ravine, a covered bridge and a campground before a climactic fight at the campaign's namesake hydroelectric dam. Unlike most other L4D tales, you're actually encouraged to split up -- you just need to stay close enough to offer support in a pinch.

News:: Mass Effect: Andromeda finally gets a trailer worth watching

Ever since its E3 2015 reveal, people have been frustrated by the fact that every clip of Mass Effect: Andromeda hasn't really been worth watching. Sure, there were plenty of teaser nuggets that maybe added up to something interesting, but almost every isolated piece of media has felt like an attempt to simply tide everyone over.

Today, on N7 Day 2016, that changes. BioWare has released a proper cinematic trailer that is actually worth watching. It's still rather secretive and doesn't divulge a whole lot, but it touches on plot devices, alien races, and settings. Also, how the hell are we expected to kill that giant monster?

Understandably, this cinematic trailer won't be enough for a lot of folks. There's a tidbit at the very end that's worth paying attention to, though. Mass Effect: Andromeda's gameplay reveal is coming at The Game Awards 2016 on December 1. Long-awaited, sure, but we'll finally get to see it in action.

News:: Blizzard's 10th anniversary of BlizzCon was sufficiently grandiose

I attended my first BlizzCon this year, and I doubt it'll be my last. Amidst a sea of people at nearly every Overwatch event (seriously, all the panels were jam-packed, some with no standing room, as were all of the demo stations -- it wasn't even close compared to any other game), I got to play all of the new content Blizzard is rolling out in the near future, including the Necromancer, Sombra, Varian & Ragnaros, and the upcoming Hearthstone expansion.

The only real bomb was Thomas Middleditch's performance and hosting of the evening ceremonies on the first day. Most famously known as Richard Hendricks from the HBO show Silicon Valley, Middleditch seemed to be trying out his standup act at BlizzCon, and it did not go well. While some were angry that his approach essentially roasted geek culture (this was to be expected), that wasn't my issue -- the jokes were really bad, low hanging fruit type of stuff, and his delivery was really off. He's a good character actor and props to him for trying it out, but I wasn't a fan.

Weird Al on the other hand was incredible. Say what you will about his musical stylings and his persona, but his showmanship was off the charts. He was changing costumes (yes, including the fat suit for the song "Fat") constantly, and performed an array of his hits from near the start of his career up to his more recent stuff, and even did an encore with The Saga Begins and Yoda. It was a great show and a great way to kick off the 10th BlizzCon.

While it can be overwhelming at times (there's panels on top of panels, some of which are too crowded to even stand at -- and the Heroes of the Storm Finals were going on just as Weird Al was starting up), I'd definitely like to come back. People seemed to be genuinely excited to be there, and really welcoming of fellow fans -- especially Overwatch players.

I took a lot of pictures, so if you want to get a feel for the event, click through the gallery below.

News:: Election take on 'The Oregon Trail' is almost too realistic

You may have no problem voting in the US election, but others won't have it so easy... and a web game is making that point all too clear. GOP Arcade and the New York Times' opinion section have posted The Voter Suppression Trail, a spin on the classic The Oregon Trail that draws attention to Republican-backed tactics making it difficult for minorities to vote, such as fewer polling places and intimidation. As you might guess, where you live and who you are makes the game either trivially easy or a serious challenge.

News:: Capcom is 'looking into' potential Nintendo Switch ports from PS4 and Xbox One

Capcom might end up being a port factory in the future. And if that's what it takes for them to stay in business, more power to them. While I love the idea of every developer taking giant risks and making new IPs constantly, having a world where Capcom is pumping out good remakes and preserving their history for posterity is better than world without Capcom at all.

Someone took note of their recent strategy and asked how the Nintendo Switch falls in line with that during their FY2016 Q2 Question and Answer Summary -- to which they responded, "we're researching it," adding "However, we do feel that there are differences in the desired direction and the play-style of the Nintendo Switch and those of the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. At Capcom, we determine which platform to release a title for after considering the features of both our software and the hardware in question, believing we must bring the enjoyment of our games to their maximum potential. As a software publisher, we endeavour to develop games that offer enjoyment best suited to each piece of hardware's features and target users. Following first party, in order to introduce our own content we are currently moving forward with internal planning and analysis as a partner company."

So while it's far from a confirmation, the Switch could end up being a much better home for third parties than the Wii U. I mean, Capcom already has a good relationship with Nintendo by way of the Monster Hunter series, but bringing in more demanding games, like potentially Resident Evil 7, could be a bigger plus for them. It would also be a no-brainer partnership, as Nintendo is still going to be putting out innovative first-party games for the Switch, leaving Capcom even more room to deliver ports.

If I could only bring one thing to a desert island, it would be a water desalinization plant, my Dunkin’ Donuts, a flint, someone to talk at, and the waterproof, shockproof HomeSpot Bluetooth speaker. Yeah, that’s more than one thing, but when would I ever voluntarily be going to a desert island and only bringing one thing? Stupid questions get smart answers.

For real though, the HomeSpot is awesome. Just this weekend, I asked if a character and a special event were enough to carry Diablo III throughout 2017. You guys had an array of opinions, some positive ("good on Blizzard for supporting the game"), and some negative ("charging for a character is bad form").

It created an interesting discussion that I wanted to expand up on further, and I got to ask that question and more directly to Diablo III's production director, John Lagrave.
