News:: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius gets a Lara Croft crossover

Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is no stranger to crossover content and this Friday will see the introduction of one of gaming's leading ladies as a playable character. Lara Croft will be battling alongside Ariana Grande and 2B on March 9. I'm not sure what deity allowed that to happen, but I'm eternally grateful.

In an odd twist, this version of Lara seems to be based off of the one from Temple of Osiris instead of the reboot or even upcoming film. I would imagine getting Alicia Vikander into this game is not something Square Enix wanted to pay for, but it also doesn't really tie into the new film all that well.

Whatever the case, details are scarce for how long Lara will stick around for. I'm sure we'll learn more once the DLC lands.

News:: Man At Arms forges NieR: Automata's Virtuous Treaty

Man At Arms: Reforged, the YouTube series that makes real-life builds of weapons from games, comics, and movies alike, recently took up the task of creating 2B's sword from NieR: Automata

Forging a weapon like this is undoubtedly an insane amount of work, but the amount of detail that goes into the hilt of this weapon in particular, along with the strange shape of the blade, just shows that these guys and gals are masters of their craft.

News:: Someone visualized our deaths in Dark Souls

The early hours of Dark Souls can be brutal as you work out how to survive long enough to find the next just-out-of-reach bonfire. Or, if you're anything like me, you fought a bunch of skeletons in a graveyard for an embarrassingly long time before realizing you weren't meant to go that way yet. So many attempts, so little progress. You'll never forget your first From Software action-RPG.

Twitter user DriftItem has been cooking up a neat Dark Souls project: a map of Lordran visualizing our many, many bloodstains (deaths) and messages. My eyes went straight to the graveyard right outside Firelink Shrine, then I had to look for the Bell Gargoyles, Hellkite Bridge, and Capra Demon.

It's tricky to work out every single blood-soaked landmark. Here's the annotated version:

"I'm collecting the data with a custom game client I wrote," says DriftItem. "Data preservation is one of my goals. DS1 multiplayer data isn't stored on a central server but traded between clients. Once the DS1 remaster comes out and player number go down, a lot of data would get lost for ever."

It was sad to see the Demon's Souls servers go offline last week. While I'm still holding out for an eventual remaster, I'm happy knowing these games will always live in our memories.

News:: Review: Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match

Truth be told, Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match isn't the game I wanted out of something based on one of my favorite anime series.

That game would be the ideal ambassador for the joy of Girls und Panzer, bringing its unique blend of sports, cuteness, and armored warfare to the gaming masses the way the Ultimate Ninja Storm game brought Naruto fandom, or the way one could in theory become a fan of Sword Art Online solely through playing the games.

Dream Tank Match isn't that game, but that's not to say playing it wasn't a blast, or even that non-fans of the series won't get anything out of it.

News:: StarCraft's 20th anniversary celebration will span multiple games

It doesn't seem like StarCraft is pushing two decades, but these anniversaries have a way of creeping up on us. If you were at all into the beloved sci-fi strategy game back in 1998, I'm sure you have vivid memories of sneaking in late-night matches and recounting harrowing victories with friends.

Leading up to StarCraft's 20th anniversary on March 31, Blizzard plans to give away cosmetic rewards:

  • StarCraft: Remastered - Log in after March 6 for a UI skin.
  • StarCraft II - Log in after March 6 to receive a UI skin for every race and (between March 6 and April 3) a Portrait and Decal.
  • Diablo III - Log in after March 6 for a Battlecruiser pet. (Seriously!)
  • Overwatch - Log in between March 6 and April 3 to get the Sarah Kerrigan Ghost skin for Widowmaker.
  • World of Warcraft - Between March 31 and April 6, /salute either the Zergling, Grunty, Mini Thor, Baneling, or Zeradar to receive the "Salute to StarCraft" Feat of Strength.
  • Heroes of the Storm - Log in between March 27 and April 7 to grab the anniversary portrait for Protoss, Terran, and Zerg.
  • Hearthstone - Between March 21 and March 25, play a StarCraft-inspired Tavern Brawl to get three Kobolds & Catacombs packs.

Blizzard is also preparing streams on March 30 and 31 with some of "your favorite StarCraft personalities," along with a nostalgic video feature called StarCraft is Life: A Celebration.

News:: Trump's meeting with the games industry is set for March 8

The highly publicized meeting between President Trump and the video games industry is set to take place on March 8, according to a White House news briefing. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) will be participating in this meeting, though to what extent is unknown. The ESA issued a statement clarifying its stance going into the meeting and what it hopes to convince the President of.

The main gist is that the US has "an exponentially higher level of gun violence" while other countries consume the same media and haven't seen an increase in shootings or violence. The ESA insists gaming is not the culprit and is going to have, "a fact-based conversation about video game ratings," along with discussing its commitment to parents and how the industry looks at games to rate their content.

News:: Co-op action-RPG The Swords of Ditto out in April

We've touched on The Swords of Ditto's cheerful Saturday-morning-cartoon aesthetic before but I can't say enough good things. It's marvelous and rich in detail. I kept pausing this trailer to take it all in.

For those just catching up, this is an action-RPG with an overworld and dungeons in which you'll undertake the same quest again and again as generations of would-be heroes. Your sword retains its power between runs, and eventually you'll be battle-hardened enough to scale a tower and put an end to the witch Mormo. Also, The Swords of Ditto has co-op. That's a huge selling point.

It's coming out on April 24 for PC and PlayStation 4. Devolver sure knows how to pick 'em.

News:: It's time to put Way to the Woods on your radar

Way to the Woods is just the little pick-me-up I needed on a tired Monday morning. It's a game about deer exploring a world seemingly abandoned by humans, and simply put, it's lovely.

I particularly like the giant cat's sewer lair. That's such a fun idea.

"I'm an old, old 18-year-old man now but at least I have [a] trailer and new screenshots for you guys," creator Anthony Tan said in an update today. (If he's considered "old," I must be an ancient relic.)

It'll be a while yet before we return to the woods. The game is set for "PC and console" in early 2019.

News:: Trump will meet with video game industry leaders on March 8th

After a little bit of back and forth, it appears that the White House's meeting with the video game industry is on. At today's press briefing, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that a meeting will take place this Thursday, March 8th. Separately, the Entertainment Software Association, which has many of the top software publishers (and all three major console manufacturers) as members, confirmed that it would be participating in the meeting. The ESA's full statement follows below.

News:: Review: Past Cure

Not all video games are created equal. Like, there's obviously a quality discrepancy that sets games apart -- it's why we do the whole scored review thing. But I mean, not every video game aspires to be a masterpiece. Some just want to be schlocky and fun. It's important to know who you are.

The problem here is that Past Cure wants to be a masterpiece. It takes all the pieces from popular psychological thrillers and mashes them together in a truly uninteresting and unwieldy way. And it's designed so poorly that there's no chance in finding a silver lining as a flawed-but-enjoyable B-tier game.

News:: Sushee tweets confirm that Fear Effect remake is still happening

Indie-outfit Sushee have put out a tweet at confirming that the remake of 1999's PlayStation title Fear Effect is still on the books, despite fan's concern that there had been no news of the project since its reveal last year.

To be honest, it figures that you wouldn't build hype for the remake while work was still underway on your current Fear Effect title, as you risk confusing consumers with which game is which. Now that Fear Effect Sedna is finished and available to the public, the work can begin on marketing Reinvented.

Fear Effect Sedna is available March 6 on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. Fear Effect: Reinvented is currently in development for the same platforms.

News:: Xbox has a new show that's partially dedicated to revealing news

Xbox is switching up -- or at least expanding -- how it makes announcements. Usually press releases, Xbox Wire, and Major Nelson's blog are the main sources for Microsoft gaming news. Now, video will play a bigger role.

Xbox has just revealed a new show called Inside Xbox, and it's meant to act as a direct business-to-consumer communication. In the teaser trailer, Microsoft specifically mentions breaking news, exclusive interviews, and behind-the-scenes access. It'll absolutely serve a heavy marketing purpose, but the promise of reveals makes it seem as if it'll be more than fluff.

We won't have to wait long to find out how useful Inside Xbox turns out to be. The inaugural episode is set to air on March 10 at noon Pacific. Among other things, Microsoft says there will be an emphasis on Sea of Thieves content, some Xbox Game Pass news, and upcoming console features.

Looking forward, it seems as if Microsoft plans to make Inside Xbox a monthly production. Nintendo's Directs might be the most obvious analog for what Inside Xbox aims to be. Maybe it cribs from Nintendo Directs a bit, but that comparison also feels somewhat disingenuous. Directs are announcement-oriented and Inside Xbox looks to be more of a variety show of sorts. Also, Nintendo is far from the only video game company that realizes bringing the news straight to the fans is probably in its best interests.

News:: For Honor is getting dedicated servers on consoles tomorrow

Almost a year ago, Ubisoft claimed that it would be adding dedicated servers to its historical brawler For Honor. While that update arrived on PC last month, it hasn't made its way onto consoles...that is, until now! Starting tomorrow, March 6, console players will be able to finally play For Honor with a decent connection.

Coming as part of For Honor Season Five, dedicated servers will also be accompanied by new heroes, new training events and a special three week long event. Data gathered from the PC rollout has shown improved match completion rates and a complete elimination of games being stalled due to host migration. There are also some other unnamed improvements that Ubisoft is promising will happen for console players.

Whether or not this is too late to save the game is up for debate, but at least Ubisoft has shown dedication to improving the experience. With how successful Rainbow Six Siege has been for the publisher, maybe For Honor can make a comeback and do justice to its intriguing premise.

News:: Say goodbye to Max and Chloe as Life is Strange wraps up today

It's time to bid adieu to Max Caulfield, Chloe Price, Arcadia Bay, and youthful innocence. The Life is Strange that we've known for more than two years ends today. Fitting that for a game originally about rewinding time, the last installment takes us back to the very beginning.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm's bonus episode Farewell released today for anyone who owns the deluxe edition of the game. It's the last look we'll ever get at Max and Chloe, as it's meant to be a sendoff that showcases exactly how close they were before Max moved off to Seattle. Life is Strange is a series about heartbreaking tragedy and formative moments. Expect some of both from Farewell.

This is definitely the end of Max and Chloe's arcs, but it's probably not the end of Life is Strange. Developer Dontnod has said in the past that it wants to create other stories within the Life is Strange name that explore similar themes but don't necessarily have shared characters and settings. None of that is confirmed yet, so Farewell is all we have for now. Goodbyes are hella hard.

News:: Neo Atlas 1469 sails West for Nintendo Switch next month

ArtDink, winners of the Chris Moyse award for Cutest Company Name, have announced that map-making adventure title Neo Atlas 1469 will arrive in the West the same day it launches in Japan for Nintendo Switch.

The game sees players plot a course to discover the free world, setting sailing across our wonderful flat Earth. The unique game requires players to gather information from Admirals, some of which feature dubious, eyebrow-raising facts, in order to plot your voyage into the great unknown. The game has already seen release in Japan on the PS Vita, as well as being available worldwide on Steam.

But why listen to me when a Catgirl, of all the frikkin' people, can demonstrate the game in action below?

News:: What do you want to see in Phase 4 of the MCU?

Black Panther crushed it once again, pulling in more money than the next seven films combined. That was pretty much a given, though. The film didn't have any competition this week, and pulled in the third biggest gross for a third weekend of all time. With A Wrinkle in Time opening this weekend it'll probably lose its number one spot, but the film should easily continue to rise rapidly through the box office rankings, where it currently sits at number 10. It's worth noting that most of the other films making this much money were released in time frames that are a boon for movies making money while Black Panther is doing this during a traditional cinematic down time.

Obviously Marvel and Disney are pretty happy with this, and over the weekend Disney announced its release schedule through 2023, and there will be a lot more Marvel coming. In fact there are seven Marvel films coming after Avengers 4 lands marking the start of "Phase 4" of the MCU. We already know a few of these movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and some sequels to Spider-Man Homecoming, but little else is confirmed. So what do you want to see? More Black Panther? A slate of new heroes? A rebirth of some other heroes? What's the future of the MCU?

News:: Tencent lets parents reward kids' good grades with game time

If you grew up with video games as a kid, you probably struck a deal with your parents: pass a school test with flying colors and you can play more. Tencent wants to formalize those arrangements. Chief executive Ma Huateng has proposed digital contracts that offer game time to kids (for Tencent games, of course) in return for either reaching certain academic criteria or performing chores around the home. He wasn't specific about when these agreements would be available, but he noted that children could have their friends witness the signing of a contract.

News:: Stardew Valley publisher Chucklefish's next venture is Spellbound, a wizard school simulator

While ConcernedApe did all of the heavy-lifting and created Stardew Valley, publisher Chucklefish took a chance on it and helped bring it to market. They're using that success to capitalize on another cute looking simulator in Spellbound.

Just like Stardew it'll be heavy on the sim-aspect, incorporating relationship building, classes, crafting, and farming. It'll also have elements of combat in the "forest of elemental magic," bringing in even more parallels.

In an interview with Red Bull, Chucklefish takes the opportunity to declare that Spellbound is going to be less like Harry Potter in the sense that it's less over-the-top with more of a low key approach. They also explain that "Spellbound is an idea several people at Chucklefish had been kicking around for a long time," making it a bit of a passion project for them.

It might be marinating in development for a long time too, as it doesn't have a release date, and is set for PC (though they are open to porting it to Switch) whenever it arrives. Until then Wargroove will drop on Switch in 2018.

News:: Nintendo says Switch play time data hasn’t been deleted

Last week, Switch users began to notice that their activity log data had reset and play time from before March 3rd had been deleted. A number of Redditors reported the loss of play time data while a few of us here at Engadget noticed the reset as well. And for those who got a Switch when it launched last March, that could mean that up to a year of activity had suddenly disappeared. Nintendo has now commented on the issue and if you're a Switch user you can breathe easy. Your data isn't gone.

News:: Switch suffers from a glitch that erases Zelda: Breath of the Wild playtime records

Nintendo Switch owners took to Twitter this past week to share their disappointment for a recent glitch that erased the record of "time played" on their systems for Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Of all the games to erase playtime data for this is probably the most egregious offender, as it launched with the Switch day one, and folks are proud of the effort they've put into their save files.

The issue seems to stem from a Y2K-esque situation where the system bugged out after the OS detected that players have been active for a year. Thankfully Nintendo is aware of the situation, explaining that they "expect to have more information to share in the near future."

There is no word on whether or not the data is completely lost, if it'll be recovered when a fix is implemented, or if it'll just work itself out. We'll update you when we hear more. In the meantime fans have taken this opportunity to tell Nintendo that they want a legitimate activity log like past systems; not the rudimentary one we have on Switch currently.

News:: Studio behind Skyrim Switch offers to port Monster Hunter World

A few major studios have emerged from the mass Switch port rush of this past year, most notably Panic Button. They've ported over a few major releases like Rocket League and Doom, and are poised to be one of the most in-demand developers in the coming year.

But Bethesda commissioned another outfit to handle Skyrim -- Iron Galaxy -- and they're attempting to take on their next big job via Twitter. This past weekend CEO Adam Boyes just tweeted at the official Monster Hunter account, noting: "Dear [Monster Hunter team] at Capcom - we understand that porting the game to Nintendo Switch is challenging...but this is exactly what [Iron Galaxy] does. Give us a shot & we won’t let you down ;)."

It remains to be seen if this actually turns into anything, if Capcom isn't secretly working on porting it to the Switch already, but since they've said time and time again that they didn't plan for it, this port is probably a ways off and a "super" incarnation away.

News:: Nintendo Switch titles get a boost in this week's UK Charts

The status quo (your dad's favourite band) continues this week in the UK Charts, as EA's FIFA 18, Activision's Call of Duty: WWII and Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V remain a lock in the Top Three.

A serious boost was given to some of the Switch's flagship titles, however, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe climbing to the number four slot, and GOTY winners Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild both making new pushes for glory. Further down the chart Splatoon 2 also got in on the act, jumping from number 39 to number 25.

Other than that, little to report. Metal Gear Survive has already peaked, dropping from sixth place to number 17. Resident Evil 7 has made a re-entry at number 20 and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has pushed itself back into the Top Ten, re-entering at number eight.

News:: Monster Hunter: World is now the best-selling Capcom game ever

Capcom have proudly announced that open-world adventure Monster Hunter: World has now seen over 7.5 million combined shipments and digital sales. This makes it the best-selling game in the developer/publisher's history.

The latest in what was generally a fairly niche series, the eagerly-anticipated Monster Hunter: World launched in January and immediately broke series records in mere days. Heavily praised by fans new and old, the game has continued to ride an incredible wave of success.

The best-selling achievement pushes the game's sales beyond those sales of legendary series such as Resident Evil, Mega Man and Street Fighter. Not to mention the fact that the game is yet to see its PC release which is scheduled for later this year, and will no doubt cause sales to spike further still.
