News:: The 300 Week 17: 2018 Tribeca Film Festival Critic's Notebook (Part 2)

All right now, boppers, welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my goofball quest to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. Casting such a wide net, I hope there’s something that you can also enjoy and share.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival ended over the weekend. I was able to catch 26 films that screened at the festival, one festival film that opened in theaters during closing weekend, as well as the feature-length debut episode of a Showtime documentary series. While the show doesn’t count for the final tally, I did get almost a month ahead of schedule in just a week and a half.

I also watched Avengers: Infinity War, like every other dutiful nerd on this planet.

Be sure to check out Jesse Lab’s reviews from the Tribeca Film Festival:

The 300 will slow down and get back to normal for the rest of the month. I’m just hoping MoviePass remains solvent long enough for me to get to 200. If MoviePass as we know it dies and I have 100 movies to go, I’ll have to get creative to close this out.

And so, onward.

News:: There's a Beyond Good and Evil 2 livestream tomorrow

We haven't heard an awful lot about Beyond Good and Evil 2 ever since its surprising reveal at E3 2017. There has been some in-engine gameplay that amounted to little more than a tech demo. That's about it.

According to the Beyond Good and Evil 2 Facebook page, there will be a developer's stream tomorrow May 3 at 9am Pacific. It will be hosted on the Ubisoft Twitch channel. This is the second livestream event, and one of few opportunities to see anything related to Beyond Good and Evil 2.

But what should we expect? Probably not a whole lot. The timing is curious, given how close we are to E3. Anything substantial will almost certainly be saved for Ubisoft's E3 press conference, especially considering how little we actually know about the game. Tomorrow will likely be nothing more than a chance to hear Michel Ancel talk.

News:: Valve adds Switch Pro Controller support to Steam

If you play PC games and you're looking to make extra use of your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, some great news: Valve is going to officially support the device on Steam. The company is currently beta testing Pro Controller support, which you can opt into right now, and it looks really promising.

With the Steam Client Beta, you can go into the Controller Settings page (View > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings) and then toggle "Switch Pro Configuration Support."

From there, you can simply connect your Pro Controller and start calibrating it under "Detected Controllers." Valve recommends taking the extra time to do so for "best results with the gyro."

"After that, create a config (or load an existing config), via the 'Controller Configuration' option in the Manage Game screen for the title you are playing. The full functionality of the Steam Input Configurator is at your disposal: bind the gyro, add radial menus, create action sets, etc. If you prefer to start from a community config, press X and browse the options. Finally, launch and play your Steam game with your Switch Pro Controller. Bring up the overlay with the 'Home' button to tweak your config on the fly."

I think I'll wait until all the kinks are worked out, but I'm super pleased to see this happen.

News:: Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal demo available now on PS4 in Japan

A demo for Marvelous! Entertainment's Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal has gone live on the Japanese PS4 store, the game itself launched in the territory in February this year.

In the demo, players can choose from a selection of the game's sword-swinging schoolgirls. Asuka, Yagyuu, Ikaruga, Hibari, and Katsuragi are all available for selection, before your gal of choice steps up to take on the game's first Trial Mission: A tutorial battle with Homura.

The demo also gives a glimpse of the game's customisation mode, where you essentially play dress-up with your favourite warrior waifu. A range of clothing, hair and skin types are available in the full game.

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is out now in Japan and is coming to PS4 and PC in the West this Fall.

News:: PUBG is going offline today as it implements a huge new update

PUBG players in the United States will have to make new dinner plans tonight because chicken isn't on the menu. PUBG on PC is going temporarily offline for planned maintenance, which is scheduled to take four hours -- between 7pm and 11pm Pacific.

The reason for the downtime is so that developer PUBG Corp can implement Update 12. The contents of this patch have been live on the test server since last Thursday. After a relatively quick testing period, they're being added to the full game.

There are a handful of new items that Update 12 introduces. The most important one is probably the SLR, which is a marksman rifle that's more powerful and more unwieldy than the SKS. There are also 3x and 6x scopes, a bunch of new grips, and a muscle car.

However, some of the most substantial changes to PUBG concern existing items. Almost every weapon has been slightly buffed or nerfed (here's the complete breakdown), and the widespread effect is that assault rifles do less damage and submachine guns do more damage. Also, level 3 helmets can now be found exclusively in airdrops.

There are a lot of tweaks, but there's one major feature that players will find affects their experience the most. Update 12 adds the ability to pick which map you want to play. Plenty of people have strong feelings about the desert-set Miramar. Now, they'll be able to ostensibly revert to the Early Access days by only queueing Erangel.

News:: This Shao Kahn statue reminds me of how imposing he was in the original Mortal Kombat games

The Mortal Kombat series did a fantastic job of one-upping itself back in the retro era. While Shang Tsung was a formidable foe in the original, Midway completely topped itself with the addition of Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat II; someone who would wipe the floor with the original big bad.

He's been a memorable villain ever since, and now you can enjoy him in statue form from Pop Culture Shock -- so long as you can get past the sticker shock. As a 1:3 scale statue it's 35 inches tall, but there's a lot of caveats. It's limited to 300 units, and will run you $1499.99. There's even a payment plan -- yikes!

As an aside, 100 of the 300 are "EX" models, which include LEDs, and swappable Shao Kahn/Onaga heads. Pre-orders have started already, and the statue is expected to arrive between June 2019 and August 2019.

News:: Far Cry 5's new shovel gun is as ridiculous as it sounds

Far Cry 5 has a bit of an obsession with shovels, and that fascination goes even further this week with the latest live event, White Collar Job. How many lives would you trade for a gun that launches shovels?

I hadn't messed with any of these limited-time in-game events before, but the allure of a shovel gun was too much to resist dipping back into Far Cry 5. To take part, you just need to go into the map menu and flip over to the Online tab. From there, you'll see a listing for the current live event.

News:: Google reportedly backing a new social games startup

Michael Sayman, originally invited to Facebook as a 17-year-old by Mark Zuckerberg, created a video-centric social app for teens, Lifestage, when he was 19. Now the young superstar is behind a secret Google social-gaming startup called Arcade, according to a report at Bloomberg. The new company's first app, say the site's sources, is set to debut this summer with elements of trivia games at its core.

News:: 10-Yard Fight is back on PS4 and Nintendo Switch

The pretro-fans at Hamster have re-released another game from the dawning days of the arcade onto modern platforms, as Irem's 10-Yard Fight is available today on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Upon release in 1983, 10-Yard Fight received praise for its detailed sprites, a far cry from the matchstick men of previous football simulations. The player, perpetually on offence, runs the quarterback upfield, with options to either pass to the running back, a receiver, punt or attempt a field goal. That's pretty much it for your play choice, Montana.

This Hamster release is a port of the original arcade, which features no defensive play. Players simply attempt to score a Touchdown, with each further attempt increasing in difficulty. When 10-Yard Fight was ported to the NES, defensive play was added, alongside a two-player mode.

10-Yard Fight is available today on PS4 in Japan and on Switch worldwide, priced around $7. Fine for completionists, but don't forget what other titles are in the Hamster catalogue for the exact same price.

News:: Overwatch Season 10 is now underway, Brigitte playable in competitive

It's hard to believe that Overwatch is now nearly two years old at this point. It simultaneously feels like it's been around forever and just launched, but once I start thinking about how we've gone through repeated seasonal events, it all sort of just comes together.

Another telltale sign is that the game is currently in its 10th ranked season, which just kicked off this week. If you want that spray and icon (and potential points for a golden weapon), now is the time to start your placements.

A few other things are happening this week as well. Brigitte's honeymoon has ended, meaning that she can now be played in competitive mode. Also, the new Rialto map is coming to standard play today after being tested in PTR. It's not going to be added to ranked modes at the moment, again, just standard play.

Blizzard is also toying with massive changes for Hanzo and Symmetra, so heads-up if you play those two a lot.

News:: Everyone involved with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery should be ashamed of themselves

Since last year, I’ve been making a push for more and better mobile game coverage on Destructoid. I know some of our readers don’t like that -- making me fully aware of their displeasure in the comments -- but there really is a fair share of charming, engrossing, and well-made mobile titles that can certainly appeal to long-time console and PC gamers. In just the past five months I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing top-notch premium mobile games like Florence, Gorogoa, Oddmar, and Part Time UFO. I’ve also reviewed a nice slice of free-to-play games I thought well enough of to actually put the time and effort into playing for the sake of a full review.

For every game I cover, there are three or four I play for a day and move on from. I can’t write about every game and I decided last year it’s better to focus on the good mobile games rather than bog down the site with articles that amount to nothing more than “This game is shit.” There are exceptions, but I try to keep things positive. That’s why I won’t be covering Marvel Strike Force or The Sims Mobile for instance. They’re both mediocre games, but not so repulsive they deserve public condemnation.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, however, is so fucking awful it deserves every bit of scorn it has coming its way.

News:: The Good Life passes its Kickstarter goal with a couple days to spare

Well, that's a relief. After trying his hand at crowdfunding The Good Life on Fig last year and coming up short, Swery brought his "debt repayment daily life RPG" to Kickstarter in March. The fund drive has been a marathon, not a sprint, and I wasn't so sure it'd make its goal. But thanks to a lot of activity in the crowdfunding campaign's final days, The Good Life has surpassed its $619K funding goal.

Releasing a playable prototype for the game was a smart move, and if you haven't tried it out yet, it's not too late to do so. The Good Life revolves around Naomi, a debt-ridden photojournalist stuck taking jobs from offbeat locals in the small town of Rainy Woods. As another wrinkle, she's caught up in a murder mystery and, once a month, everyone in town turns into either a cat or a dog.

It's a mighty strange game. I'm glad it's coming to fruition.

News:: Here's the first footage of the Disgaea remake

Disgaea 1 Complete is a pretty monumental release for the series, not just in terms of the impact the original made and how it's going to be reintroduced to a new generation, but the fact that it's dropping on PS4 and Switch. Typically NIS chooses one or the other, or toys around with various re-releases (even the original Disgaea saw a port on DS after it arrived on PS2 and PSP) rather than a simultaneous one.

All that aside, NIS just gave us the first video footage of Disgaea 1 Complete, and yep, it looks like Disgaea alright. We get a good look at the new art style, as well as a general overview of the strategy RPG madness that the series entails. If you've never played it before it's a grid-based SRPG that takes place in one of the craziest, most anime universes ever created. Various follow-ups have had their highs and lows, but folks generally consider the original to be one of the most pure forms of the concept.

Disgaea 1 Complete will arrive earlier in Japan on July 26, and in the "fall" in the west.

News:: Free Pato Box update brings new modes, fighter and soundtrack

Mexican indie outfit Bromio have announced that their bizarre fighting/puzzle adventure game Pato Box will be receiving a free update next week. This update will add some new features to the Super Punch-Out!!-inspired title.

Coming on May 7, the update will add an Arcade Mode to the game, allowing players to take on Deathflok's roster of contracted employees in back-to-back fights. The mode will also double as a Time Attack, as players battle the game's bosses in an attempt to beat their own record.

Not only that, but completing the arcade mode will unlock a secret character for Pato to throw fists with. Little is known about the mysterious new fighter, who was designed by one of the game's Kickstarter backers, but from the trailer below, it appears to be some kind of evil Pato!

The game's great soundtrack, by Controvol (formerly Abuguet) will also be made available for purchase. The soundtrack will cost $5 for those who already own the game, or will be available on Steam in a "Game & Soundtrack" package. Finally, Pato Box itself will receive a 15% price discount until May 14.

Pato Box is available now on PC and is scheduled for release on PS Vita and Nintendo Switch in June.

News:: The Fireball Island restoration is about to end as one of the most successful Kickstarters of all time

Remember Fireball Island?

A lot of people did, as the new "Reignited and Restored" version of it has managed to wrack up $2,349,386 in pledges over the course of its campaign. With just over a day to go at the time of publication there's still more time for the pledge amount to increase, but suffice to say since it smashed its $250,000 goal, it's going to see the light of day. The campaign is estimating a November 2018 delivery date, and the lowest possible tier to actually buy the game is $60 (for $20 "verified retailers" can enter a selling program).

Its pledge amount is just enough to get it into the top 25 of all time board game list, and all it needs is a little nudge to rocket into the top 20. Board games are among the most funded Kickstarter projects on the site, including the $8,782,571 funded Exploding Kittens, and the $12,393,139 Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5.

Again, board games/tabletop are a big deal on Kickstarter. There are two all-time earning board game projects above the Ouya, still the most-funded video game related project ($8,596,474), and three board games above Shenmue III, the highest-earning actual video game, which clocks in at $6,333,295.

News:: PSA: PS2 games are now available on PlayStation Now

While it's been somewhat overshadowed by the Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature lately, Sony's PS Now game-streaming service has been an OK solution for folks who want to play decent older games without having to own the old consoles. That solution is that much better as of today, which marks the first wave of PS2-era additions to the service's library.

According to the PlayStation Blog, the first PS2 games to arrive on PS Now this month are Ape Escape 2, Dark Cloud 2, and Hot Shots Tennis. They're available on PS4 with HD and Trophy support. Non-PS2 offerings include Limbo, Metal Slug 3, and a "PS3->PS4 upgrade" for Blazblue Chrono Phantasma Extend

This is good news overall, though I can't help but note that all three of the new PS2 classics are all Sony-published titles. I wonder if more third-party games will be joining the lineup, and how many of those will be Suikoden 3, 4, and 5?

News:: Black Bird, the next Onion Games joint, is hitting Switch and PC this summer

Two of the best mobile games of 2017 originated from Onion Games, a indie studio run by Little King's Story producer/director Yoshiro Kimura. Both Dandy Dungeon and Million Onion Hotel charmed the socks off me at launch and continue to be games I play on a regular basis. Hopefully Black Bird, the studio's newest project, will manage to do the same.

This side-scrolling shooter, which judging by the trailer below has a dark story to match the somber art direction, will be playable at the annual BitSummit Festival in Japan next week. After that, it's expected to arrive on Switch, PC, and Mac sometime this Summer. The video below is a prototype version of the game from 2016.

News:: New Fighting EX Layer trailers feature Hokuto and Gougi types

PlayStation have released three trailers for Arika's Don't-Call-it-a-Comeback punch-up Fighting EX Layer. One trailer showcases the return of Hokuto, while the other two are for the game's two release formats: "Light" and "Standard".

Hokuto, who made her first appearance in Street Fighter EX, is a woman of strong, noble spirit. Calm in nature and controlled in the fight, she harbors sorrowful feelings over her confused genealogy, as her true parentage was kept hidden from her until she became an adult.

The two other trailers are named after the game's decision to release in two formats: a "Light" edition featuring 12 characters and five "Gougi" decks (stat buffs, not dissimilar to Street Fighter X Tekken's derided gems) and a "Standard" Edition, which will include 12 characters, plus Hokuto and 15 Gougi decks.

Fighting EX Layer is expected to launch digitally on PS4 toward the end of June.

News:: You only have a certain amount of time to download the Dark Souls Remastered test, so do it soon

So the Dark Souls Remastered network test is coming soon, and there's at least one big proviso attached to it. Okay two, as Bandai Namco confirmed that the Switch edition is not going to launch with the others, so there's that. Anyway that proviso -- you only have a specific window to download the test before it actually goes away.

The test program is live now on PS4 and Xbox One, and will be until May 8, 11:59PM PT. At that time the client will be gone, and you'll have to wait a few more days to actually try the game out. The test truly begins on May 11-12 from 6:00PM PT until 11:59 PM PT.

You don't have to make a whole lot of room, as the test clocks in at under 4GB. Just go to the storefront of your choice, search for Dark Souls Remastered, and locate the client in the DLC/add-on section. See you in Lordran next weekend!

Atlus have dropped the 1,345 trailer for upcoming rhythm games Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night. The time featuring another DLC character strutting their stuff, the adorable Lavenza.

Spoilers ahead for Persona 5

Lavenza is the amalgamation of Persona 5's Velvet Room assistants, Justine and Caroline. These girls - who are also featured in Dancing Star Night - attempt to help protagonist Joker with his "rehabilitation". At one point in the narrative, the two jailers merge to form Lavenza.

In the new trailer, Lavenza moves with grace and fluidity, staring out at the player with her DEAD EYES. She is eventually joined by Margaret, the older sister of Persona 3's Elisabeth. Lavenza will be available to purchase as a DLC character, for either dance title, post-release.

Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are both set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita.

News:: 'Red Dead Redemption 2' trailer offers a glimpse of John Marston

Red Dead Redemption 2 is still over six months away at this point, but we've got a new trailer to dissect in the meantime. The trailer is all about narrative and setting a tone, but looking closer, developer Rockstar Games tucked a handful of gameplay clues into the 128-second video. Fist-fights, train robberies and sitting down for a stage show all look like side-activities for when you need a break from taking missions in The Dead West.

News:: Oh hey, it's a new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer

As promised, Rockstar's scheduled Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer is right on time, and you can watch it below.

It's heavy on story, but also features a decent amount of in-game footage, including at least one stagecoach battle and some fisticuffs action. You can really see the enhancements Rockstar has made this past year since they first showed it off, as the facial details are pretty on point.

So beyond the new footage shown in the trailer, here's what we know -- Red Dead Redemption 2 is arriving on October 26 of this year, and Rockstar notes that they don't expect there to be any further delays. It'll drop on PS4 and Xbox One. It's a prequel to Red Dead Redemption, and you'll play the role of Arthur Morgan of the Dutch van der Linde gang.

News:: Zarina and Sylvie are headed to SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy

A new trailer, released by SNK, has revealed that Zarina and Sylvie Paula Paula are the next two fighters raring to brawl in the upcoming SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

Zarina is a beautiful young woman of Colombian descent who boasts a happy-go-lucky outlook and an acrobatic fighting style, somewhat akin to Capoeira. She is often accompanied by her faithful pet toucan, Coco.

Sylvie Paula Paula is a hilariously obnoxious car crash of ice cream and kittens. Usually seen wearing extravagant, colorful and eccentric clothing, Sylvie's childlike personality hides a vicious psycho-kinetic fighting style. Sylvie is one of the last survivors of the sinister NESTS project, which created an army of experimental clones.

Both of these characters made their debut in King of Fighters XIV. Some would argue that their impact hasn't really been felt enough to warrant inclusion in a "Best of" compilation roster, but let's face it, if SNK can port over models rather than make a load from scratch, it's gonna happen. Besides, both Zarina and Sylvie are pretty cool characters.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy launches September 7 on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. An arcade version of the game is also scheduled for release.

News:: Lumines Remastered has been delayed to June, Switch included

In a sort of fake out that's typical with special announcement events like Nintendo Directs or any other publisher-centric stream, Lumines Remastered was originally billed as just coming to the Switch -- but after its debut Nindies Showcase it was promptly confirmed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One as well.

The creators also noted that it would be coming in May, which as it seems, was a misnomer. Just this week Q Entertainment has announced that Lumines Remastered will be arriving on every platform on June 26. That's a global release for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. As a reminder the Switch will have HD rumble capabilities, and the other editions can be viewed in 4K.

With something as timeless as Lumines, a delay to ensure the game works properly is perfectly fine.
