News::Are Games Trying to be Too Serious?

Chris West writes: "So I recently finished playing through Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Ive got to say, I wasnt impressed. The art direction was quite beautiful and the setpieces were done well, but I found the story aspect to be inorganic. The game consisted entirely of unconnected events that are generally considered to be either sad or touching. Considering how much praise this game has been receiving, I welcome all forms of backlash with open arms. While my opinion of Brothers isnt the focus of this article, its place in a pattern of serious and humorless video game narratives is. A narrative featuring serious themes and subjects isnt a bad thing as long as the writing and story is good, but it seems everybody is aiming to make their games dark and depressing because everyone else is doing it."

News::Review: Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare | Game Informer

Game Informer has reviewed Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. They write: Spending a few hours with the accessible combat and charming world was entertaining, but the random card packs and achievement-style leveling system killed my desire to keep playing. Garden Warfare's simplified gameplay and limited map selection can only entertain for so long without rewarding progression, there's no carrot (or brain) at the end of the stick.

News::Nosgoth goes into closed beta today

Nosgoth is that free-to-play third-person shooter set in the Legacy of Kain universe. It's also that game that makes us wish there would be a new legit Legacy of Kain game every single time we have to talk about it.

Anyway, you can signup for the beta here. The closed beta phase will include a new Siege mode that sees humans needing to capture specific points, while the Vampire players need to hunt down the humans and suck their blood. Nosogth will see continuous updates throughout the closed beta, and we can expect things like new maps, modes, character classes, weapons, and more.

Forget about the Legacy of Kain tie-in for a second and Nosgoth is a pretty decent third-person shooter. It's something.

News::Hedge fund guy suggests mobile Mario with $0.99 high jump

This week, Oasis Management founder Seth Fischer sent a letter to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explaining why the company should dive right into mobile game development and microtransactions and all of the things we don't want to happen.

Granted, we already know Iwata's stance -- the proliferation of mobile devices "doesn't mean that we should put Mario on smartphones" -- but I think you'll get a kick out of this.

"The same people who spent hours playing Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Legend of Zelda as children are now a demographic whose engagement on the smartphone is valued by the market at well over $100 billion," Fischer wrote. Nintendo, he feels, is "well placed to make an immediate entry into mobile" with "arguably the largest library of casual games."

Chasing quick money based on what's popular right now. Hmm. That sounds like the opposite of the Nintendo we know and mostly love, but okay. I see where the guy is coming from, more or less. And then we get to the part where the letter straight-up sounds like satire:

"We believe Nintendo can create very profitable games based on in-game revenue models with the right development team. Just think of paying 99 cents just to get Mario to jump a little higher."

Please join me in setting a moment aside to be thankful you aren't the head of Nintendo.

J Station X writes "Robots do have minds. Not in the traditional sense; their innards are metallic and made of fraying wires and code most humans couldnt understand, but they can feel and hurt and make decisions for themselves if we program them to do so, gifting them with relationships and smarts that even their mechanical pieces can understand. Thats whats afoot in Reset, a first person puzzle game that puts players into the shoes of a robot who must make their way through a mysterious sci-fi story, working co-operatively with themselves to do so. Reset is ambitious and enthralling and to find out more, weve interviewed Alpo Oksaharju, Resets Designer and Artist and one half of Theory Interactive, the team behind the game."

News::Double Dragon: Neon update addresses online lag

Patrick reviewed the recent PC version of Double Dragon: Neon and found the game itself to be rad but couldn't say the same for its online cooperative play due to input lag. A new update on Steam has been released to remedy the situation and fix other issues:

  • Huge improvements were made to the online co-op portion of the game, reducing lag significantly and improving connectivity, giving a more enjoyable experience overall.

  • Fixed issues during the Level 8 “Marian II” boss fight where players would experience slowdown and sometimes end up crashing.

  • Fixed the resolution issue where some players would have the game load up and hear music and sounds but not see a picture.

  • Fixed the issue where pressing Up on the D-Pad would sometimes cause the player to initiate a high-five on the controller.

  • Fixed issues where some backgrounds in levels were not displaying properly in certain resolutions.

  • Fixed the issue where choosing “Borderless” in Video Options was not working with certain resolutions.

  • Fixed an issue with the Level 8 “Marian II” boss fight so that its arms are no longer off-screen during its idle animation.

  • Added an option in the Settings menu so that mouse and keyboard players have a way to enable Ro-Bro Mode.

  • Additional bug fixes and tweaks to the game.

As of this week, publisher Midnight City has also added the option to buy a two-pack of Neon on Steam for $12.99. (For the sake of comparison, a single copy costs $9.99). Worth considering if you've got a special someone in mind.

News::One Hit Pixel Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

One Hit Pixel: "Not everyone liked MercurySteams revival of the Castlevania franchise. Such decriers are largely those who felt that the in-house development studio at Konami led by Igarashi were perfectly fine without the need for a reboot. The series has gone from many different genres, with its most famous incarnation being the Metroidvania style. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was mainly criticised for being derivative of the immensely popular games God of War and Shadow of the Colossus, not really focusing on being unique in anything other than setting. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 marks the end of MercurySteams involvement with the series; but while the first was a flawed gem that divided a fan-base, the second game in the franchise has major issues that may unite them once more."

News::Trolls Vs. Vikings Review | GameDynamo

GameDynamo - "Reversing the traditional perception of Trolls as vicious, brainless beasts and Vikings as cheerfully violent heroes, Trolls vs. Vikings portrays the former as peaceful folk who love beauty and the latter as greedy raiders. These Vikings are only after the gold, and the Trolls' village is about to be demolished by their avarice. It's up to the disarmingly cute Trolls to put their talents to work defending their homeland. A tower defence game, along the lines of the wildly popular Plants vs. Zombies games, the Trolls need to defend their peaceful village from advancing waves of pillaging Vikings. It wears its influences clearly, to the point of being derivative, relying on the design and artfulness of the characters, as well as a streamlined in-game economy to differentiate itself, and while both of these strategies are successful, it's not enough to pull the game out from under the Plants vs. Zombies shadow."

Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a Minecraft movie according to Deadline. Notch himself confirmed the news as well. So yeah, that's happening.

Warner acquired the movie rights from Mojang, and it looks like this will be a live-action take on the hit videogame. Roy Lee, who produced The LEGO Movie, is set to produce the Minecraft movie as well.

Lots of videogame movie news recently, but if any movie based on a game were to be a blockbuster hit, it would surely be one based on Minecraft. Hopefully the producers will be smart enough to reach out to the likes of Corridor Digital as their own live-action take has over 26 million views.

News::Review: Gunslugs

Sidescrolling run-and-gun games are, arguably, a classic that never seem to go out of style. Games like Contra and Gunstar Heroes, with their multiple weapon types, hundreds of attacking enemies, and billions of bullets whizzing past your head are a frantic and fun diversion. Naturally if you're going to make a run-and-gun game, these are the key elements you'll want to have present.

Gunslugs borrows heavily from these tropes, but still manages to come up as a unique and fun shooter with a large emphasis on the silly.
