News::ZTGD | Cannon Brawl (PC) Review

Sophie Halliday writes: As someone who grew up obsessively playing Worms in the 1990s, I was both excited and a little apprehensive about getting to grips with Cannon Brawl for the first time. Would it be a poor imitator? Would it just make me miss everything that I loved about Worms? Luckily, any doubts I had were quickly dispelled as I began my first foray into the game via the campaign mode. While the legacy of Worms is clearly evoked by Cannon Brawls game play and presentation style, this real-time, artillery-focused offering from Turtle Sandbox Games more than stands on its own two feet, with plenty to offer fans of earlier series such as Worms or newcomers alike.

News::Why ESPN Is Wrong About eSports

Fatal Hero: Im sure youve already heard that ESPN top-dog John Skipper denies that eSports are any type of sport. He says this just after his own channel televised DOTA 2s The International and amid rumors that League of Legends was looking to follow suit. He instead suggests that the whole thing is just a competition and how hes mostly interested in doing real sports. Its sad to see because unfortunately, Skipper seems to miss what makes eSports its own legitimate field.

News::Toast Time Review (PC) by CalmDownTom

"When you think of Toast Time, you immediately think of getting some toast and a cuppa, yet the small team at Force Of Habit have decided Toast Time refers to a pixeled toaster firing a torrent of toasted, baked goods at enemies. Hell, playing as a toaster that slowly unlocks an arsenal of yummy pixel death had me interested right away."

News::Bedlam Preview | VGU

Sam Foxall from VGU writes: 'We have seen many books that utilise pre-existing game worlds to tell a story but we rarely see books adapted into games. Besides the hilarious 8 bit Great Gatsby game and the Witcher series, I cant think of many other books that have made a successful transition to games. Bedlam seeks to change that, being the adaptation of a Christopher Brookmyre novel of the same name. Is the game shaping up to be the first successful book to game adaptation, or should it return to the book shelf?'

News::Red of Paw Joins Development of Crystal Rift

VRFocus - Indie developer Nick Pittom, also known as Red of Paw, has become well known within the virtual reality (VR) community for his work on adapting scenes from famous Studio Ghibli animations into VR titles. The developer recently enjoyed a successful Kickstarter campaign that will enable him to travel to the Oculus Connect conference in Hollywood, California this week and develop a videogame based on the experience. News::Project Morpheus seems to be lagging behind Oculus Rift a bit

As the virtual reality races wages on, different prototypes keep coming out for Project Morpheus and Oculus Rift. I had yet another chance to play two new titles on Project Morpheus at Tokyo Game Show. While they were certainly unique in their own right, it’s tough not to feel as if Oculus is a bit ahead of Sony’s project.

The first game that we played was The Deep – a shark attack simulator. Ascending from the depths of the ocean in a deep sea cage, I had a first-person view of an angry shark as he tried relentlessly to rip the vessel apart and feast. I’m sure I’m delicious, but I didn’t want it to find out.

I was equipped with a gun that fired flare-like projectiles, which could be aimed based on the positioning of the DualShock 4. Unfortunately, I don’t think these shots were actually effective in any way, and were only included to make the experience interactive. Still, it was fairly incredible to watch the shark lurk, circling the cage and slowly ripping it apart.

By the end of the ride, I made it to the surface intact. The finale held one last, grand attack in which I was sure the demo would end grimly. It didn’t, as the shark gave up and went back to the deep unknown to terrorize other unlucky creatures.

News::Bandit Six Dev: Gear VR is 'superior' to Oculus DK1

VRFocus - While smartphones continue to grow in power and quality, many still question if they can be used for true virtual reality (VR) experiences. Plenty of head-mounted displays (HMD) already offer the chance to plug in a handset and have it act as a display for an Android of iOS-based VR experience, although these are thought to be less convicning than the Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus HMDs that use high tech machines to power VR videogames. According to Bandit Six developer Climax Studios, Samsung's upcoming Gear VR HMD could change all that.

News::Kickstarter Dev Harassed and Threatened by Vaporware Dev Over the use of Grimoire

What do Grimoire and Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar have in common? Nothing really, except for maybe a fantasy setting and the use of the word Grimoire in their names. However, that has not stopped Cleveland Blakemore, the developer behind the elusive Grimoire Heralds of the Winged Exemplar that has been in development for 18 years, threatening OmniConnection with lawsuits for trademark infringement over the use of the word Grimoire in the games name. Citing that Blakemore owns the trademark to the use of the word Grimoire in video games, Blakemore has demanded that OmniConnection stop their Kickstarter campaign, take down their Steam Greenlight page, and change the name of their game.
