News::Blizzard "Already Thinking Ahead" to the Next World of Warcraft Expansion After Warlords of Draenor

In a forthcoming interview right here on AusGamers, Blizzard's Ion Hazzikostas revealed that the studio is already looking to the next expansion for World of Warcraft after the forthcoming Warlords of Draenor. "We definitely want to start, and have started, thinking ahead already to what the next expansion act is going to be," Hazzikostas revealed to us. "We are trying to set up our storylines and our villains a little bit better because its important more now than ever, now that weve run through the core of the Warcraft 3 lore." Hazzikostas also spoke of the importance of building on lore beyond Warcraft's RTS era and into the MMOs continued life, citing the narrative they worked from with Mists of Pandaria. "I think seeing how the story of Garrosh played out was interesting over the course of Mists of Pandaria because thats a character created in World of Warcraft that had a story arc that began in The Burning Crusade," he added. "He became the commander of the Northre...

News::Alien Isolation Review | Codec Moments

Matt at Codec Moments writes: "Games based on, or around, massive franchises rarely succeed. Theyre not necessarily bad games, they just dont always live up to fan expectations. Since the woeful yet strangely compelling Colonial Marines, fans of the original Xenomorph have cringed at any mention of a new digital foray into that universe. Now it seems Creative Assembly have done the impossible produced an Alien game without years of previews,hype and failed promises. Its the game weve been waiting for, but is Alien Isolation the game we expected?"

News::Gaming Union: Defense Grid 2 Review

"Defense Grid 2 still has plenty to offer the tower defense genre, but it isn't quite as defining as the original was. The level design is still extremely strong and the addition of multiplayer adds an extra dimension. It just doesn't have the same impact as it did first time around and it's a bit disappointing that the only changes that come with the towers are slight modifications."

Avoiderdragon: Its easy to be complacent, especially if a company can lean on successful franchises that they can milk like cash cows on a regular basis. However, things have changed since then as there have been many known publishers and developers have recently been working to expand their repertoire with games in other genres. This is notable with The Creative Assemblys successful entry into survival horror with Alien: Isolation and now Harmonixs departure from the usual music and dance games with this title.

News::Flickering Myth: Shadow Warrior Review

"Given its old school roots, Shadow Warrior also falls into old school trapping with levels not really being clear, without the aid of a map it can be sometimes unclear and confusing where youre meant to be heading, cue running in circles for 10 minutes while you try to locate the only door you havent tried to open thats been hidden away down corridors and pathways that look exactly like the ones youve already searched 10 times or more. Its by no means a deal breaker but it can cause some frustrating downtime in what is otherwise an incredibly fast paced game. If Shadow Warrior was a £15-£20 downloadable title, Id have absolutely no hesitation in singing its praises from the rooftops but it isnt, it costs £30 or over and is about to go up against Advanced Warfare and Far Cry 4 and with those on the horizon, its a little more difficult to sell Shadow Warrior to anyone who doesnt have money to burn and is looking for a good time, which is a shame as Shadow Warrior is a hel...

News::The Evil Within (2014) Review | FilmGamesEtc

Survival Horror at its best is a tug war between two different design philosophies: tension and action. Tension focuses on frightening situations, adversaries, and themes that cause the user to think about their virtual mortality (and on occasion their actual one); while action offers a way to fend off said tension. Simply put, survival horror is a genre built on looking fear in the eye and conquering it. The Evil Within (TEW) marks the return of veteran game designer and architect of survival horror, Shinji Mikami, to the genre that he help create. Will The Evil Within recapture the primal fear and white knuckle action that the genre deserves? Or will it be a lesson in self parody?
