News::Official Civilization LEGO Doesn't Include Nukes (Or Pottery)
It's not a smug Gandhi, or a Great Library, but this new project on LEGO's Ideas platform is nevertheless an official piece of Civilization LEGO. It just needs some votes to help turn it into a real thing you can buy.

News::Alienware 13 Review: The First Futureproof Gaming Laptop
I've owned a grand total of two gaming laptops. It was depressing how quickly they aged. But the new Alienware 13 won't suffer the same fate. It's the first gaming laptop that lets you connect a external desktop graphics card for freaking awesome, truly unheard-of speed.

News::Get nostalgic for Portland Retro Gaming Expo with these lovely photos
If you live in the Pacific Northwest, perhaps you attended the fifth annual Portland Retro Gaming Expo which took place the weekend before last. If you didn't, well -- here's a lovely pile of photos that the talented Geoffrey Smith II was kind enough to take for us at this celebration of gaming from the days of yore, featuring cosplayers, special guests, and lots of games that require you to insert coins and/or blow on them to make them work.

News::The End Of The World Doesn't Always Have To Be Brown
Submerged is an exploration adventure from ex-BioShock devs that takes place in the technology-spattered ruins of a place that's seen better (and less water-logged) days. If you ask me, though, it looks almost... pleasant? Don't know about you, but I'd hang out there.

News::Doom II's Icon of Sin immortalized as a badass statue
What's your first reaction to this sculpture based on Doom II's last level, Icon of Sin? If it's "Holy shit, I don't know where to look but everywhere I look is crazy impressive," we're a lot alike.
Artist Jason Hite put together a special video for the piece complete with sound effects from the game. He's also got a blog post discussing the creation process. His description of the squished Cacodemon corpse is great (as are the rest of the photos):
"The Cacodemon (or evil tomatoes) was actually my favorite thing to make," he writes. "I sculpted it quickly during lunch with Monster clay. After I molded it in silicone, I carefully took out the clay, cut the top off and re-sculpted the bottom to make the Cacodemon's mushy corpse. What's neat is, I used only the clay from the original Cacodemon, as to not add too much mass to the body."
The sculpture is on display at the Copro Nason Gallery in Santa Monica, California until November 8, 2014. Hite's work looks right at home (semi-NSFW) next to the other freaky pieces.

News::Star Wars: X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and other LucasArts classics are joining GOG.com
Digital distributor GOG.com will expand its library with games from a mysterious publisher tomorrow -- perhaps you've seen the countdown? Users recently dug up familiar-looking fonts suggesting it's none other than LucasArts and they've now found even more convincing evidence.
Prying eyes have discovered forum threads (which have since been taken down) that spoil the surprise. According to one thread, GOG.com has partnered with Disney to release "about 30 classic titles" from LucasArts, six of which will be out tomorrow:
- Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition
- Star Wars: TIE Fighter Special Edition
- Sam & Max Hit the Road
- The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Those first three haven't been available via digital distribution before. After all of the heartbreaking Star Wars game cancellations over the years, it's nice to have good news surrounding the property for a change. I'm curious to see which SCUMM adventure titles will surface and when.

News::Contest: Show us your Halloween costumes and win Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel!
Do you like dressing up for Halloween? I sure do! In fact, just a few years ago I went as Princess Peach. I was SO beautiful. (You can see the sexy evidence above. And that's my wife playing Rock Band in the background. She was dressed as Mr Andy Dixon.)
Anyway, if you're like me, half the fun of dressing up is showing off your costumes, and the other half is winning a free game for doing so! (The third half is scaring children. The fourth half is stealing their candy as they run away.) Well it just so happens that your beloved Robot Overlord found an extra copy of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel hidden in his robo-shoe, and he's decided to hand it out at random to someone who posts a picture of themselves in their costume in the comments below!
Limit one entry per person, and you have until this Friday at 11:59pm Pacific to show us your stuff. All costumes are valid (meaning not just videogame-related ones), so don't feel discouraged even if you're going as Elsa from Frozen like every other f*cking little girl in the world this year. Winner will be chosen at random, but you must hold up a sign that says "DESTRUCTOID" in the picture so we know it's really you. International readers are welcome to enter, though we may ask you to pay for shipping if you win.
Double points if you dress up as Claptrap using only items you found around your house.
Good luck, and have fun!

News::Earthworm Jim 2 scares me to this day
Leading up to Halloween, I've been wanting to write about horror games because that's what you do in October, right? I still might; I'm playing the oft-recommended Fatal Frame II for the first time now and am planning to revisit Condemned. But before I get to those, I have been thinking about games that aren't traditionally deemed scary that managed to get to me anyway.
My mind jumps back to Shiny Entertainment's classic action-platformer Earthworm Jim 2. What a surreal game. It went places you wouldn't expect even if you had played its predecessor or were otherwise familiar with characters like Professor Monkey-for-a-Head and Queen Slug-for-a-Butt.
This was a game willing to dress you up like a blind cave salamander and force you to flap around villi-filled intestines to the tune of "Moonlight Sonata" for a single level. And god forbid you bounce off one of those mischievous pinball bumpers (whose intestines are these?) -- the ensuing scream was horrific. But The Villi People isn't the level that prompted this article.
That distinction belongs to Puppy Love, a stage whose title alone strikes fear into my heart.

News::Fangamer is going all out for this EarthBound project
Fangamer has come a long way from its beginnings at Starmen.net. What started as a Mother/EarthBound-focused fandom now sells all sorts of videogame-related merchandise. With this current project, titled You Are Now EarthBound (after an old fansite), the team is returning to its roots. Not only is it focusing on the game that catalyzed the company's genesis, it is looking like one of the biggest projects Fangamer has taken on.
It is set to include a handbook similar to the one produced for Mother 3 , a documentary on the fandom for the series, an album of EarthBound music arranged by the Bad Dudes, and a zine composed of EarthBound-inspired art and writing.
Getting all of the rewards digitally takes a pledge of $32, with physical releases starting at twice that much. Work is well underway on the project, but Fangamer is seeking $100,000 on Kickstarter to help get it all finished. As of this writing, it is only a fraction of the way to that goal at about $9,000.
