News::End of Nations development 'put on hold'

Some folks on reddit happened to notice that Trion Worlds has removed any mention of End of Nations from their official sites. The troubled title has been in development for years now, and last year it was revealed their switching gears from a massive real-time strategy title, to a MOBA. The registration page for even the MOBA version of the game has been taken down.

So what gives? A representative from Trion sent us the following statement.

"As we informed EON’s community last fall, internal development on End of Nations was put on hold in late 2013 while we evaluated potential paths forward for the title. We're currently focusing the company's energy and creativity on Rift, Defiance, Trove, ArcheAge, and some new projects that we will be revealing soon."

Trion says they're putting the project on hold, but after so many issues and delays, I'm starting to think End of Nations has really come to an end.

Clint Prentice writes: "Looking Glass original Thief games helped to define a generation of stealth titles. After an extended absence, Garrett returns in a new iteration from Eidos Montreal. Thiefs primary gameplay motives should be pretty clear from the title alone, but it suffers from a severe lack of focus. Instead of centering on the tools of Garretts trade, Thief tries too hard to be something its not, which ultimately breaks the one thing it does well."

News::Industry vets talk controllers in Critical Path documentary short

Critical Path is a documentary series featuring interviews with influential members of the videogame industry. In this episode, the topic of discussion is controllers and input.

I found one section to be particularly interesting. Speaking about Dead Space, designer Wright Bagwell said that early on in development, some members of the team believed Resident Evil's awkward, "deliberately clunky" control scheme was needed to instill fear.

"One day, one of our engineers just got really fed up and he said 'You know what, I just can't take this any more. I don't believe that we need that.' And so we changed our controls to what you know in Dead Space now ... we found that players were no less terrified at all."

It's the end of one era and the beginning of another. This week is the first in which Phil and I have taken over Dtoid.tv as full time heads of the channel. Naturally, we're sad to see King Foom go but we're both ready to take the reigns and run the channel (into the ground). Some of King Foom's last shows on the channel were with the recently released Earth Defense Force 2025. We thought this would be a great way to bridge the two chapters of Dtoid.tv history and would make a great backdrop for us to answer all of the questions people have about the channel's future. Also, Phil and I really hate bugs.

News::Dust: An Elysian Tail passes one million sales

A bunch of us liked Dust: An Elysian Tail and it puts a smile on my face to hear that the game wasn't merely a critical success. Creator Dean Dodrill tweeted over the weekend that the game had passed one million units sold across Xbox Live Arcade, Windows, Mac, and Linux.

While we're on the subject, you ought to read Dodrill and writer Alex Kain's postmortem on Gamasutra. Toward the end of development, there was a point when all of the already recorded voicework was going to need to be cut for the sake of meeting a crucial milestone. Thankfully, a solution was discovered before all that work had to go to waste. "This happened over the course of a single day, but I cannot emphasize how many years it took off my life," wrote Dodrill.

There's time left to get Dust in the Humble Indie Bundle 11. Just a little -- this is the final day.

News::DICE prioritizing Battlefield 4 netcode issues

In a blog post about the current state of Battlefield 4's multiplayer, DICE wrote that fixing netcode issues with the game is "one of the top priorities." I'd sure hope so -- few things are more irritating in competitive games (or any games, really) than the perception that you are being cheated.

The post covers what has been fixed already and what's next on the list: rubber banding, an out-of-sync kill camera, a bug causing damage to not register, and instant death while sprinting.

Players have called Battlefield 4's low tickrate -- "how often the server will update the game world" -- into question and I'm happy to see that addressed here. I'm less happy with the studio's response, however: "Though we haven't got any immediate plans to increase the tickrate at this moment, we are exploring the possibilities of raising the tickrate on specific servers."

Quote: "Thief is mixed. It's confused, unfocused and restricted, and disappointing overall. However, it's also not without merit, and there are good ideas here and really fun stealth gameplay when its elements are working. It unfortunately doesn't justify a full price purchase or picking up of the PS4 or Xbox One versions, as the game underwhelms both graphically and technically. Jon of RGN writes, "Dungeons: The Eye of Draconus is a 2D Brawler type game which if you find yourself as one of those types of gamers that feels the need to compare directly to others then in essence of gameplay mechanics Golden Axe from the Sega Genesis days could be passed as a game that definitely helped inspire a title like Dungeons: The Eye of Draconus. With a screen full of over 50 characters at any given time though, Eye of Draconus gets a lot more intense. A comedic style is used to keep things from getting too edgy. With 3 player co-op featured for both online and local multiplayer, gamers are faced with a plot-driven narrative told through dialogue and cutscenes and based on live action series. This game has been in development for 5 years plus 2 years for the script during internship and the developers had to fight to get the control of their content rights back for this IP that has taken nearly a decade to bring to essence."

The real tragedy of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is neither the loss of its Metroidvania style nor the predicament of its protagonist. Its the fact that it is a great game with so many visible blemishes plaguing otherwise excellent gameplay. Its not that type of game where you enjoy everything besides that one irritating mechanic. Nor is it that kind of game where the experiences of good and bad even out into making it an average title. Its a game where you jump in split seconds from God of War level fantastic combat moments, to shoehorned disappointingly unnecessary stealth sections. Is it good, is it bad? Its not quite that simple here.

News::Thief Review | HDD

The biggest issue with the execution of Thief is that the stealth genre has evolved much farther along and left behind the series that started it all. For instance, 2012's 'Dishonored' is vastly more capable at melding stealth and action than 'Thief,' a game that was released 18 month later. Of course, the tedious supernatural narrative, Garrett's dismal fighting abilities, numerous graphical issues and audio glitches aren't doing the game any favors either. Reviving an old franchise while targeting five platforms with "a heavily modified Unreal 3 engine" may have been more than the team could reasonably be expected to contend with.
