News::Humble Bundle has Super Hexagon and more

For the next two weeks, the Humble Bundle with Android 5 (have there really been that many?) will offer pay-what-you-want pricing on Beat Hazard Ultra, Dynamite Jack, Solar 2, NightSky HD, Super Hexagon, and Dungeon Defenders plus all of its DLC. To get those last two, you'll need to beat the average purchase price, which is under $6 right now.

Although this has an Android hook to it, Windows, Mac, and Linux versions of these games are also included. You can't forget about the soundtracks, either -- there's one for all but Dynamite Jack in this bundle. To date, the Humble Bundles have brought in more than $10.7 million for charity. Go ahead, pat yourselves on the back.

News::Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Review (ITF Gaming)

Brady Ruiters from ITF Gaming writes: The Metal Gear Series has always had an interesting roster of characters in each game; one such character is Raiden, one of the Metal Gear Solid 2 protagonists. However, hes a character that has been plagued by mixed opinions; some love him while some have complained about his inclusion in the series. That changed when he showed up as a cyborg during the events of Metal Gear Solid 4 but not all were convinced. Thankfully, Platinum Games and Konami have given him a shot at redemption with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and boy what a shot it is.

News::There are no Guild Wars 2 expansions in the works

Speaking to IGN, Guild Wars 2 director Colin Johanson stated that there are no expansions planned for the game at the current moment. While they haven't completely ruled any out, don't expect any soon.

Johanson states, "expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future. We don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got."

He also notes that it's "unlikely" that there will be a Guild Wars 3, because Guild Wars 2 will evolve, until it "becomes Guild Wars 2.5 or Guild Wars 3."

This is pretty great news in my mind. If you keep getting free content updates for this subscription free MMO, you never have to worry about paywalls into new areas. Since ArenaNet has been keen on supporting the game well into launch, it looks like you'll have plenty to do.

News::Pay what you want for bridge-building sim Bridge It

IndieGameStand is running a sale on Bridge It , a game that looks exactly what it sounds like. It's a pay-what-you-want deal, with the minimum set at $1. The fascination with simulation games hasn't caught on with me in any meaningful way, but the description for this one sounds devilish enough that I might just have to give it a go:

"Set in the picturesque surroundings of sparse deserts and dense forests it is your task to strategically design and construct an engineering masterpiece. Watch in eager anticipation as unsuspecting motorists, heavy freight trains and tourist riverboats approach. Will your solution stand up to the test or will tons of mangled steel be sent plummeting into the river below?"

Paying more than the average (a couple bucks, at this point) unlocks the game's add-on pack, while paying $10 or more throws in access to Pixelry and the next game on IndieGameStand. 10 percent of proceeds from this promo will go toward Equality Now, "an organization that advocates for the human rights of women and girls around the world."

News::Aliens: Colonial Marines Review - TGH

Vaughn from TheGamersHub writes: "Its hard to deny it, Aliens: Colonial Marines isnt the greatest movie tie-in title ever made even though it really should have been. It had everything in the right place during the early development scenes and splashes we got a chance to see. For one it was being published by Sega, who tend to release some pretty decent titles when they throw some money behind them. Secondly it was in the hands of Gearbox Software, a developer who has churned out some pretty stellar titles like Borderlands and Brothers in Arms. It was also based around the rather fantastic Alien universe focusing rather squarely upon perhaps James Camerons best film: Aliens. Yet, after having gone through the game development digestive system, in the end all that appeared was a little bit of a turd."

Vlambeer has announced the release date for Ridiculous Fishing, which will be arriving on iOS March 14.

I was fiddling around with the game on my iPad over the weekend, and it's some highly addictive stuff. If you've played the original Flash release, Radical Fishing, you can probably see why (and now would be a good time to check it out if you haven't). But the iOS version, with its tilt and touch controls, feels so much better and packs in a lot of new guns, lures and fish to catch. Can't wait for next week!

News::RetroN 4 plays NES, SNES, Genesis, and ... GBA?!

Ahead of a full reveal later this month, Hyperkin has begun talking about its latest system, the RetroN 4. This bad boy has slots for NES, Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, as well as six controller ports (two for each console) and HDMI output.

Both NTSC and PAL games are supported, in addition to Bluetooth; the RetroN 4 is said to have a redesigned wireless controller. Finally, there's a "digital user interface which opens a wide variety of modern gaming features such as selecting systems, button reassignment and other features" that will be announced on March 23 at the Midwest Gaming Classic.

I've yet to come across any images of the console, but based on its predecessor, I'm not expecting it to look pretty. That's okay, though -- assuming it all works, and most games are compatible and run well, I'll take functionality over form.

News::Why are the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so ugly?!

Okay, maybe I'm being too critical here. I can't help it though, considering I grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was that kid. That kid who had all the action figures including the dumb non-TMNT figures, all the clothes, and obsessively watched the show.

With all that said, Activision and Red Fly's take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles looks so ugly. They don't even match the look of the new Nickelodeon Turtles, which this game is supposed to be based around.

Still, I'm going to try Out of the Shadows at least before completely dismissing it. It's not often we get a four-player co-op TMNT game. Well, good ones at least.

If you haven't been keeping tracks, reviews have been mostly positive, with our own awarding the game an 8.5 out of 10. Although the Tomb Raider series has never been able to grab me, I have a feeling this might be the one that breaks through. Are any of you in a similar boat?

News::Former Bulletstorm developer on move toward smaller games

Speaking with GamesIndustry International
, Adrian Chmielarz, People Can Fly’s former co-owner and creative director, had this to say: “We think that video games are not all they can be. Actually, most of them are the same formula in a constantly updated skin. And that's fine, but we think there's room for more variety, for paradigms challenged and for the formulas reinvented.”

It doesn’t ring dissonant to these ears, but it’s a bold enough statement when you consider how Chmielarz has backed it up. After the relatively well-received Bulletstorm and subsequent acquisition by Epic Games, Chmielarz , Andrzej Poznanski, and Michal Kosieradzki left the studio they founded to form a new studio, The Astronauts, intending to focus on smaller experiences.

"It's the same idea: get the best in business under one umbrella, have a studio with a very flat structure, be 100 per cent responsible for the glory and the shame, and work on games that get our hearts beat faster," Chmielarz said.

Now that’s what I like to hear. Too often in AAA development do you get an evident materialization of the old “too many cooks spoil the broth” adage, and kitchen sink game design. Talented folks leaving the comfortable, bombastic world of Bulletstorm and the gritty, emotionally repressed world of Gears of War to try something wholly new and exciting can only be a good thing in my book.

The Astronauts’ first title, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, is a first-person horror-ish game in which you play as a detective with supernatural abilities. And you actually have to detect and explore. No combat. I am all about this. It’s slated to drop on PC this year.

News::Star Trek: The Game – Paramount Pictures on taking creative control of a game project

“We had to be the main driving force creatively,” says Brian Miller, senior vice president of Paramount Pictures and producer of Star Trek: The Game, “I think it wouldn’t have worked any other way.”

Star Trek is in development at Digital Extremes, a studio responsible for the confident storytelling in The Darkness II and therefore a natural fit for a movie adaptation. Namco Bandai is also co-publishing, but it’s not a designer or Namco producer we’re talking to today. Miller’s presence at this hands-on event for Star Trek is more than just lip-service; it’s a reflection of the depth of involvement and creative control that Paramount itself has commanded over the project.

“The only way to get this one done was to have us at Paramount be sort of the lead,” reasserts Miller. “Star Trek is an important brand to us. It’s been an important brand for over 40 years. It’s bigger than any one movie, it’s bigger than any one episode. There’s been a lot of movie-based games where things didn’t work out so well, and I think our involvement is key to this.”

The result of the partnership between developer, film studio and filmmaker is a glossy thirdperson shooter with a co-operative focus – an angle picked, says Miller, not because side-by-side shooting is currently trendy, but because it captures the intense relationship between Kirk and Spock that resides at the heart of JJ Abrams’ films. “There was no other game we could possibly make”, Miller argues. “We wanted to make sure that the actual experience, the actual relationship between Kirk and Spock came through in the game.”

In practice, this means shooting enlivened by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprising their roles as the Enterprise’s cocky captain and his half-Vulcan first officer. It means a canonical script to which the film’s scriptwriter Roberto Orci has lent a hand, and it means dialogue that perfectly captures the dynamic established at the end of the 2009 movie. When Kirk decides he’s going to personally head a rescue mission to a beleaguered space station at the outset of the game, Quinto’s performance conveys just the right amount of repressed frustration at his captain’s “seemingly endless desire to stretch [his] legs.”

But when the shooting starts, it’s a relationship between equals rather than opposites, with both Kirk and Spock sticking to cover and leaning over it in order to pop off phaser shots with equal competence. That’s not the gamut of their abilities, admittedly – both can use a tricorder to hack and scan various pieces of level furniture (turning on sprinklers to snuff out a fire blocking their path in one instance) – but there’s no pretending that Star Trek offers co-operative mechanics of a complexity to rival Portal 2. There are intense moments, however, such as one sequence in which the player controlling Kirk must singularly defend the pair while Spock bandages his captain’s wounded leg.

News::Next Tomb Raider film will be based on latest reboot

We've known for a little while now that Tomb Raider would be making it back to the big screen, and now we know it will be based on the new reboot of the game series thanks to a Variety interview. This won't be a repeat of the Angelina Jolie takes where the license is just handed away blindly either, as Crystal Dynamics is working closely with GK Films to develop the movie.

“They are working from this new take that we’ve given them,” Gallagher of GK Films told Variety. “It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens.

“It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider’ films.”

That all sounds pretty promising. The next Tomb Raider is out today and I think it would lend itself quite well to the big screen. Check out our official review to see how the new game turned out.

She's capable, she's feminine; she battles an all-male cult that considers itself enslaved to a Queen. But although there's a feminist dialogue happening in Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot, it's not, I don't think, the most interesting conversation the game is having. "On the one hand, I'm reticent to ask people to try and forget that Lara is a woman. Through her backstory, her relationships with other characters and her plausible physical shape, Tomb Raider wants you to recognise Lara's femaleness. She's not a frail Princess Peach, nor is she a penis-envious, Aeon Flux-style ass kicker. She's perfectly normal; she's a woman. But on the other hand, I think it might help to look, somewhat, past Lara's gender."

News::Jason Wests Respawn departure confirmed; family issues cited

Reports yesterday that Call of Duty co-creator and Respawn co-founder Jason West has left the studio have been confirmed. West, who co-founded Respawn following his sacking from Infinity Ward amidst a barrage of lawsuits, has left the studio due to family issues. The news was confirmed by Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella, who today posted a statement on the companys official website. Jason has left Respawn to take care of some family issues, Zampella wrote. We have worked together on some amazing accomplishments over the years, starting with an early Segasoft project that never shipped. It is sad to see things come to an end, but there are times when change is best for growth, both personally and professionally. I wish Jason the best and send my best wishes to his family. Respawn continues to amaze me, the team here is resilient and talented. E3 will be therapeutic for us, as we finally get to start showing our work again. I know the team was excited about the response w...

News::Dead Space 3 PC Performance Analysis

DSOGaming writes: "Before starting, let us apologize for not offering you this Performance Analysis sooner. Unfortunately, EA seemed hesitant on sending a PC review copy, and thats why we had to delay it. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Visceral Games Executive Producer lied about offering the same gaming experience to all platforms or because EA feared that wed bring the hammer down on it. Either way, EA should not be so ashamed of it. Why you ask? But because Dead Space 3 is a fine PC port. Yes, there isnt any FOV option and the game suffers low-resolution textures but overall, this is as good as most multi-platform games, has proper on-screen keyboard indications, has amazing mouse support, and is not taxing while looking great at all."

News::Word puzzler SpellTower arrives on Android this Thursday

Corgi King and Captain of the Destructoid Army, Dale North, is all about SpellTower . I'd be lying if I said I wasn't fond of the little guy myself. The manic word search puzzler is so hot that it was even able to breathe down Angry Birds' neck for a short while. Seriously, hot tamale.

Creator Zach Gage has just informed me that the long-awaited Android version will be arriving this Thursday, March 7. It'll have all the same features as the iOS version, including local Wi-Fi multiplayer, and will be compatible with 1800+ Android devices, such as Amazon Kindle.

If you've forgotten what SpellTower is all about, check out the trailer below. Trust me when I say that it can get quite intense.
