News:: Destiny 2's Spire of Stars raid lair is short and alright, but I miss real raids

Today marks the release of Spire of Stars, Destiny 2's latest raid "lair," followed by the proper raid Leviathan, packed in the base game, and the micro-raid Eater of Worlds, released with the first disappointing Curse of Osiris DLC.

In case you haven't heard, the core idea of "lairs" is to connect a specific environment together (in this case Leviathan, and the ongoing narrative of the Cabal lord Calus), which is a noble concept. Five months later and I still have the same opinion of Eater of Worlds, the first experiment -- it's...kind of cool. That's basically the same feeling I got after running Spire of Stars.

News:: Capcom announces three nostalgic Street Fighter 30th Anniversary tournaments for this year

Capcom is using Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection as an excuse to get a bunch of people together this year to compete in older titles in the series and I am so down to watch that unfold.

Three individual tournaments are planned -- one for Super Street Fighter II Turbo, one for Street Fighter Alpha 3, and one for Street Fighter III: Third Strike. All three will have their own $7,000 prize pool up for grabs, and they're fairly spread out, schedule-wise. The first event is happening in late June.

News:: '80s shmup Terra Cresta returns on Nintendo Switch

Hamster have added a new title to their Nintendo Switch Arcade Classics Archive range: Nichibutsu's Terra Cresta, which is available to download from the eShop right now.

Releasing back in 1985, the vertically scrolling shmup was the successor to their own Moon Cresta, which was a pioneering title in the genre upon its 1980 release. In Terra Cresta, players gun down patterned waves of enemies and bosses, whilst expanding their ship's presence and firepower through the use of attachments, gathered from the unfriendly skies.

At any point the player can use these attachments to instigate powerful attacks, with a fully-formed ship transforming into an unstoppable flaming phoenix. It's a really neat and unique feature, especially considering the game's vintage roots. Vic Tokai would eventually port Terra Cresta onto multiple home platforms, I believe I had it on the Spectrum, though it probably found its largest audience on the NES. Back in the arcades, the game would receive a third sequel, Terra Force in 1987.

I'm unfamiliar with how well the arcade edition of Terra Cresta plays today, but there is a trailer for the earlier PS4 port below, should you wish to check the game out. Terra Cresta is available to purchase now on Nintendo Switch, priced at around $8.

News:: Shadow of the Tomb Raider reportedly costs upward of $100 million to make

To the average video game consumer, there's a very real disconnect between the biggest blockbusters and the resources it takes to make them. We rarely hear hard figures about operating budgets. We know they're expensive because they look expensive -- but almost every number sounds inflated to the point of excess because it is just so many millions of dollars.

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi says that Shadow of the Tomb Raider's development will cost between $75 million and $100 million. Another $35 million will be spent on marketing and promotion. It's an important footnote in a piece about delivering single-player narrative-driven experiences in a cost-effective way. But Shadow of the Tomb Raider was never going to be made on a tight budget.

So, is this $75-100 million figure flagrantly expensive? Not really. Kotaku did some crude math to show how a project can realistically cost upward of $200 million. It boils down to a lot of highly-specialized and talented folks working on a game for multiple years, often in a city where the cost of living is high. There's probably a few bucks to be saved by opening a studio in Des Moines, but good luck getting a bunch of creative types to move to Iowa.

Square Enix surely has to be cognizant of this exact situation. Five years ago, Square Enix infamously said that the Tomb Raider reboot was a financial failure when it was at 3.4 million sales. Eidos Montreal's most recent game, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, flopped so badly that Square Enix's CEO had to come out and say the series isn't being discontinued but rather that it's being put on hold for a while. If anyone is equipped with first-hand knowledge of what to expect from this kind of game, it's Square Enix.

The real takeaway is something we've known for years now: Triple-A development is a high-risk segment and many technically-successful games end up with razor-thin profits. It's a model that's getting tougher and tougher to justify. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will probably earn its development costs back, because it's the closing to a trilogy where the first two game were already well-received. It helps that it's launching on all three platforms simultaneously rather than being a timed-exclusive. But for most other games? It's a lot of money and a lot of uncertainty.

News:: Diablo is about to get a heck of a lot scarier in Heroes of the Storm

In case you don't play MOBAs (or another competitive genre), new characters are usually all the rage, but often times a team will look back at older roster members and tighten them up a bit to keep inline with the inherent power creep that most recent additions bring to the table.

Blizzard has been steadily reworking characters in its MOBA Heroes of the Storm for the past few years, and now Diablo is up next on The Butcher's chopping block. His big change is an upgraded Fire Stomp, which now does triple damage when returning and can be specifically aimed as a skill-shot. He'll also earn souls (read: a meter that upgrades his stats and abilities) more quickly, and can unlock some pretty insane talents that allow him to Fire Stomp constantly.

Diablo has always been about combos, like using Overpower to flip a hero into a bad position, followed by a Shadow Charge that pushes them into a team kill. Now Diablo can take advantage of skilled ability positioning (referred to as "peeling") to enact (proc) more Fire Stomps. Diablo's update is slated for May, and will likely drop on a Tuesday along with other changes. You can see the upgrades for yourself in the video below.

News:: Sega say new Sakura Wars coming before April 2019

As part of Sega's End of Fiscal Year 2018 report, the Japanese developer/publisher noted that their "completely new" Sakura Wars title will be released at some point in Fiscal Year 2018, so by definition that means before March 31, 2019.

The game was first revealed last month at Sega's Fes event, which was held in Akihabra, Tokyo. There is very little known about the new entry to the long-running franchise, other than Shin Sakura Teisen is set one year after the events of PS2/Wii entry Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love.

Although the wait for info is quite frustrating for fans (a platform? anything?) they can at least take comfort that, if the game is indeed to be released within the next 11 months, that Sega are going to have to start showing its hand on the mysterious title soon.

Shin Sakura Teisen is currently in development at Sega.

News:: N++ is coming to Switch after all

N++ and its 4,340 levels will soon be capable of frustrating you anywhere, anytime. Metanet's masterpiece of precision platforming madness is releasing on Nintendo Switch on May 24 for $14.99.

It doesn't seem as though this version offers anything new apart from what's already included in the Ultimate Edition that's available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. That's okay, though. This game is already big enough as is.

It's a bit of a surprise this is happening at all, though. Soon after the Switch launched, Metanet revealed that Nintendo was pushing back against an N++ port. Nintendo said it was "focusing on games that sell systems" at the time. We're evidently far enough away from the launch window (or the Switch ended up selling enough systems) that N++ is finally welcome by Nintendo.

News:: Thanos has been nerfed yet again in Fortnite

This is pretty awesome. Despite only being available in an inherently silly separate mode, Thanos, essentially a new boss character in the limited time Infinity Gauntlet gametype in Fortnite, has been nerfed again.

Shortly after launch his stats were altered, and now Epic Games is decreasing his health pool from 800 to 500. He does get a slight boost in terms of his punch damage (80 to 100) and his beam damage (12 to 20), but that health decrease is pretty massive.

The gist is that players need to find the Infinity Gauntlet in the map, and are promptly transformed into Thanos. Each time Thanos is killed a new player can grab the gauntlet, and are thrust up into the air for another quick skydive session before plummeting down and causing havoc. Rinse and repeat until someone wins (usually Thanos) and that's the mode in a nutshell.

It's easy to get into, and I love the fact that you can swap to a "boss" camera after death to follow Thanos until the end. Like the insanity mode that aimed for 15 minute games these Thanos sessions tend to be quick, so check it out if you haven't already.

News:: La-Mulana 2 is ready to break our spirit this summer

Nigoro's ruins-exploring adventure La-Mulana 2 is gearing up for a summer release on PC and Mac.

It's been, what, a few years since we last covered the game? I had forgotten it was on the way! Nigoro and Playism ran a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2014, and my attention span can only stretch so far. Knowing that La-Mulana 2 has been chugging along this whole time and it's not far off puts a smile on my face, though. (A smile that'll be wiped off not five minutes into the sequel, I'm sure.)

"Have most of the users already lost their interest during all these years? No! It's the opposite! These days we have seen many indie games being released after years of development and they all succeeded. If the game is good, people will follow, that's all. More than worrying, I'm just happy that finally we can announce this game's actual 'release!' Keep your eye on our every move from now!"

I like La-Mulana 2 director Takumi Naramura's enthusiasm. The original game slowly but surely built up a following of dedicated fans over the years and I'm hopeful good things are also in store for the sequel.

News:: Michelangelo or Donatello? Round two of Splatoon's TMNT splatfest starts today

It's time for the next round in Splatoon 2's Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle-themed splatfest. After Cool-but-(C)rude Raphael took the victory over team-leader Leonardo last weekend, this weekend will see Michelangelo take on Donatello.

Pearl, showing a rare moment of bad takes, is backing the irresponsible Michelangelo, who's more likely to be working on his radical 'tude than covering your shell in battle. Marina has chosen the corner of mechanical whiz Donatello, who is known for his outstanding intellect and having the dullest weapon on the team.

The winning turtle will go on to face Raphael in the Grand Finals next week. Donatello was my favourite turtle when I was a kid, but I have a feeling Mikey might have this won. This says a lot about the state of today's youth, always chillaxin' and partying with your Instagrams and your... Kardashians.

The TMNT splatfest begins this evening in North America at 21:00 PT until the same time tomorrow. In Europe, the battle begins at 15:00 CET until the same time on Sunday.

News:: PixelJunk Monsters 2 is getting a season pass and Danganronpa DLC

So PixelJunk Monsters 2 is getting a season pass, and considering that I was going to absolutely destroy it later this month and comb over every bit of it, I'm okay with more content on the way.

Publisher Spike Chunsoft confirmed earlier today that the season pass will run you $7.99, and will contain two DLCs -- the Encore Pack, and the Danganronpa Pack (due to Spike Chunsoft's collaboration with developer Q-Games). If you opt for the complete edition you'll get everything for $21.99, but for now, the DLCs will run you $4.99 each.

Both packs promise a new stage or challenge, with Encore providing a new missile tower and Danganronpa providing a mana tower. You'll also be able to nab free golden outfits from launch until June 7, and Spike Chunsoft is still working out the details for a limited edition physical copy.

DLC or no DLC I'm just happy the Monsters series is still alive after all this time. It would have been a shame if it was just relegated to the realm of Facebook or a fizzled mobile project.

News:: Microsoft hold sweepstakes for badass Black Panther Xbox One X consoles

Residents of the U.S. and Canada can throw their names in the hat to win one of five limited edition Xbox One X consoles, emblazoned with the motif of Marvel's billion-dollar making Black Panther movie.

The five winners will receive one of the sexy units, bearing the visage of Black Panther and his erstwhile usurper, Kilmonger. Also included is a 4K Blu-ray of the movie, domestically the highest-grossing comic book flick of all-time. Remember when people said it was "scraping-the-barrel". No, not when they said it about Ant-Man, or when they said it about Guardians of the Galaxy, I mean that other time people said a Marvel movie was going to flop "because no-one knows who those characters are".

All entrants must be over 13 years of age and be a resident of the United States or Canada. That rules me out. If you wish to enter, just head on over to the official page and put your name down. The contest closes on May 29. I hope you win!

News:: Sony's E3 2018 showcase will feature Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II

We already knew when Sony was going live for E3, but now we have a better idea of the games that will be present during its conference. While there's sure to be a few surprises, fans should get ready for some info on Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima and Spider-Man. While Spider-Man is set for a September release, we'll likely find out if the other three highlights are any closer to seeing the light of day.

Sony also makes mention that its E3 presser will be live from Facebook, Twitch, YouTube and its own website. Anyone that hates Facebook won't have to miss out on all the new announcements, which is a plus. The conference will be held on June 11, 6:00pm PST.

News:: Sony says they're not making any profits from the Overwatch charity Mercy skin

Blizzard recently released a skin for Overwatch's angelic healer Mercy to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (available until May 21), and the wording on the PSN specifically tripped up a few people.

While on the PC and Xbox the wording is clear that all of the money goes to the foundation, on PSN the phrase "Blizzard Entertainment will donate 100% of the proceeds that it receives from Sony PlayStation," wasn't so crystal. To clarify the whole situation Sony has issued a statement, noting simply "We are not making any profit from sales of the Overwatch Pink Mercy Skin."

We've reached out to both Sony and Blizzard for more clarification on how this process all works, essentially going through three companies to get the money where it needs to be. As a reminder at the very end of the drive Blizzard will tell everyone how much the campaign raised.

News:: The Witcher TV series includes writers from Jessica Jones, Constantine and The Originals

Producer Lauren S. Hissrich has taken to social media once again, revealing a little more about Netflix' upcoming TV series based on CD Projekt RED's popular RPG franchise The Witcher.

Some of the writers for the show's eight episodes have been revealed. These include vets such as Jenny Klein, who wrote for Marvel's Daredevil and Jessica Jones, Beau DeMayo, who helped scribe political monster drama The Originals, and Sneeha Koorse, who wrote for Constantine and '80s-themed conspiracy series The Americans.

Hissrich goes on to detail the process the team are using to build each episode, holding lengthy brainstorming sessions and ensuring that each character or event is detailed and fleshed out. Writers, according to Hissrich, are to bear the full responsibility of "owning" their episodes, from the first inkling of a story idea to execution of the script's final draft.

Obviously only time will tell how The Witcher eventually turns out, But Hissrich has me sold on her dedication and passion to make this series something with depth, heart and purpose, that will be hopefully find critique not as "the show of the video game" but as a great product in its own right.

We may have quite the wait to find out however, as, when asked when the show would air once, Hissrich stated "2020", before immediately following up with a wry "Who knows?!"

The Witcher is currently in production at Netflix.

News:: That new Mega Man cartoon has been renamed to Mega Man: Fully Charged

Super fighting robot....Mega Man! Or something. I don't think his new cartoon is going to be that campy (or will it?).

According to the Licensing Source Book Europe, a trade show publication for vendors, the upcoming and fully confirmed Mega Man cartoon is still on the way, and there's a few new developments in tow. Apparently the show has been re-titled as Mega Man: Fully Charged, and will air on Cartoon Network during the fall (conflicting with previous news of Disney XD). It'll also possibly sport its own set of toys from Jakks Pacific.

As a recap of sorts Dr. Wily seemingly isn't the villain this time around (though he could be at some point, or could be the main antagonist in the shadows, Trigun Knives style), it's Sgt. Night, who commands an "evil team of Robot Masters."

News:: New Persona Dancing trailers focus on Labrys and Sho Minazuki

Another week, another round of trailer for Atlus' upcoming rhythm-action games Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night. This time we get more DLC characters, taken from a slightly different source, as Labrys and Sho Minazuki get in the pit.

Anti-shadow unit Labrys is a player character, confidant and boss fight in 2012's excellent Persona 4 Arena. When not head-slicing with her almighty thrust-powered battle axe, she apparently likes to cut a rug on her adorable pin-feet. Labrys is joined in her video by her loving sister Aigis, although sadly neither of them do "The Robot".

Sho Minazuki is that "sexy badass loner" anime trope that we've all seen 1000 times. Making his debut in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Minazuki appears in the game as one of the catalysts for the story's events. On the dance floor, he uses his twin-swords in his routine, before engaging in a dance/duel with Labrys.

Both Labrys and Sho Minazuki are post-release DLC characters, and as such will be made available for both Dancing Moon Night and Dancing Star Night.

Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita. There is still no word yet of a Western release date.

News:: Square Enix is still saying Kingdom Hearts will be ready by the end of 2018

Ah Kingdom Hearts III, the game that may never come. Well, now that Square Enix has showed us so many worlds it's probably coming at some point, just not anytime soon. Wait, they're saying they're still on track for 2018 as of this week? Okay, maybe it's sooner than we think.

Square Enix just released their financial results in their year ending in March 31, 2018, and they seem pretty happy with the Final Fantasy series, highlighting them as the top three of five games released in the period between April 2017 and April 2018 (XII: Zodiac Age, Dissidia NT, and XV).

They're also looking to the future, noting planned release like Octopath Traveler on July 13, 2018, Shadow of the Tomb Raider on September 14, 2018, and...Kingdom Hearts III in "2018." Hey, it's a window! And as of today they're still on track for making the cutoff for this year. We'll likely find out more at E3, possibly the game's release date, during their pre-recorded stream.

Sony is doing something different for its E3 keynote address this year. Specifically, it'll focus on doing deep dives on a small handful first-party games, rather than unleashing a barrage of trailers. News:: Final Fantasy XIV's 4.3 patch features turtle power and another return to Ivalice

It's a great day when Square Enix dishes out information for a new Final Fantasy XIV patch, because the team just goes all out, providing a special landing page for it on top of a trailer and a producer-helmed stream that goes over minute details. They really have the formula down.

This coming patch, as previously announced, will be coming this month, and now we have a date -- May 22. It's called Under the Moonlight (4.3), and will function as a catch-up patch without a proper Savage raid tier. Instead you'll be playing through new story missions, a new 24-person raid (continuing the story of Ivalice started in 4.1), a new dungeon (Swallow's Compass), and another trial (a Four Lords battle that seems to be focusing on Genbu the turtle).

As always this new patch will come with myriad quality of life changes in tow (more options for the duty finder, cross-world link shells, more glamour options), as well as class alterations (Astrologian, Scholar, Samurai, Monk, Dark Knight, Monk, Ninja, Samurai, and Black Mage were mentioned during the Live Letter stream).

To clarify the roadmap a bit, the new Ultimate raid tier (so tough that only the 1%, or less, can clear it) is coming in 4.31 shortly after launch, 4.35 will give us more Hildibrand quests and the new Deep Dungeon in several months, and patch 4.36 even later still will debut the new Eureka: Pagos zone. I've been actively playing FFXIV more during Stormblood than I did at this point in Heavensward, which is a great sign. Hopefully the new content keeps me busy for a while now that God Kefka is in the books.

News:: ‘Spartan Fist’ is a first-person brawler with blocky cartoon violence

The world of good first-person indie games is a small one, and beat-em-ups are similarly scarce. Spartan Fist, then may be the brightly-colored first-person puncher you've been waiting for. News:: Fox just cancelled two of the best comedies on TV

Yesterday Fox decided it wanted to kill the majority of its quality comedy shows by cancelling both The Last Man on Earth and Brooklyn 99. This is in a world where The Big Bang Theory, a show that is basically just repeating the same joke over and over, is still on the air. Darkest timeline. Darkest.

While The Last Man on Earth had a bit of a bumpy ride throughout, it was overall an incredibly interesting and funny show, with a concept that could have been truly amazing. It never seemed to want to run with it as much as it should, though. The first season brought in other characters way too quickly for instance, but throughout its four season run it delivered some great comedy.

Brooklyn 99 on the other hand was possibly the funniest show on television, and routinely delivered hilarious and fantastic episodes week in and week out. It's the kind of comedy like The Office where you can just hop into a single episode and laugh your ass off, but also have these fantastic stories and and characters that pulled you in. Even after five seasons it felt fresh and that it had a lot more to say. It wasn't even suffering that badly in viewership, which just makes this all the more baffling. Sure, it wasn't a home run, but come on.

Thankfully, people seem pretty upset about 99 being cancelled, and the groundswell of support from social media and angry bloggers (you're welcome) has prompted some reports that Hulu and a few other networks may pick the series up to continue it. That's a long shot, but Hulu has done it a few times before -- most notably with The Mindy Project -- so it's not impossible. We'll just have to wait and see if things turn out noice or not.

News:: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is free on Steam for a few more hours

I can't say enough good things about Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Back in 1997 it was a wonderfully refreshing adventure game, tackling new concepts the adventure platformer genre wasn't really exploring at the time. It was also a hilarious social commentary, capped off by a perfect villain, Molluck the Glukkon.

Fast-forward to 2018 and it's still just as relevant in several ways, but you don't have to take my word for it -- you can grab it on Steam now for free for a limited time. As part of a promotion that will expire at 1PM ET today you can nab the first game free, or ponder the idea of picking up the entire series on Steam for 80% off -- nettting you Oddysee, Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee, and Stranger's Wrath HD for $2.60.

I'd say that's worth it for the original Odyssee alone, just note that this is not the "New and Tasty" updated version.
