News:: ’League of Legends’ pro suspended 20 months for domestic violence

Back in October, League of Legends player Li "Vasilii" Wei Jun livestreamed alleged domestic abuse against his then-girlfriend. The Chinese team Newbee immediately terminated his contract and the League Championship Series launched an investigation. Today, the organization suspended Vasilii from professional games for 20 months, which begins in January 2018 at the start of the next competitive season. Riot took the opportunity to modify its rules and allow for harsher punishment for potential future cases of domestic abuse.

News:: Shinobi Refle: Senran Kagura has Yumi as day-one DLC in Japan

As some of you may know, the Senran Kagura franchise has a spinoff coming to the Nintendo Switch in the form of Shinobi Refle: Senran Kagura. Did you know that the visual novel, starring Asuka, comes out on November 24 in Japan? Neither did I! However, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals that series regular Yumi will be joining the game as DLC on day one.

That being said, the price for Yumi is higher than you would expect.

News:: Steam Autumn Sale cuts prices on 'Shadow of War' and 'Evil Within 2'

It's time for Steam's annual Autumn Sale -- and as is often the case, there are deals on major games you might have missed earlier in the year. Most notably, the promo (which runs until November 28th) cuts the price of the relatively fresh Middle-earth: Shadow of War by 40 percent to $36. If you weren't thrilled at paying full price for the sequel, this might be more palpable. Bethesda's recent horror title The Evil Within 2 is half off at $30, while the brutal hack-and-slash Dark Souls 3 is down 60 percent to $24.

News:: Hellblade is a success at 500,000 sales and counting

Three months after release, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and its "independent AAA" development model have paid off for Ninja Theory. The studio is reporting 500,000 sales since launch.

Aside from the sales figure, the studio also shared some other points of interest:

  • Over 75k pre-orders across PC and PS4 before launch.
  • 250K units sold in the first week at $29.99.
  • Over $13m in revenue generated in 3 months.
  • 500k units sold in 3 months, which puts the project beyond breakeven and into profit. Our prediction was to be at this point in 6 months from release.
  • Development took 3 years and with an average team size of 20.
  • Game sold as digital-only.

"The future isn't written and we don't believe that the writing is on the wall," said co-founder Tameem Antoniades. "AAA will always exist but we need strong alternatives as well."

I hope this success emboldens not only Ninja Theory but other developers as well. "It wasn't easy to raise funding as this model of development isn't an established one, but it was worth it -- because we now own the IP for a game that we've come up with and made, which is as it should be."

The holidays are almost here, and that means you may end up playing a lot of party games with visiting friends and relatives. Amazon might spare you from having to break out yet another board game, though: it just put its Echo Button accessory up for pre-order. Pay $20 and you'll get two of the super-simple controllers for Alexa-driven entertainment like Beat the Intro (a name-that-song title) or Fourth Down Football Trivia. They should be released on December 19th, or just soon enough that they could accompany an Echo speaker you're gifting to a special someone.

News:: Gran Turismo Sport will be easing off its online restrictions and adding more single-player content soon

One of the weirder restrictions with Gran Turismo Sport was its always online requirement. Even with a stronger focus on online racing, locking players out of most modes when offline was just baffling. Why you couldn't take a photo of your car when offline is beyond me. With Sport's upcoming patches, that online requirement is going to get tweaked.

The first new update, which will be coming on November 27, will add a few cars and lay off on some of the online requirements. You'll be able to utilize the Livery Editor, Scapes (photo) mode and play the "Campaign" while not connected to the internet. The second update, which is planned for December, will add a more traditional career mode to the mix called "GT League."

In Sony's own words, "Launching in December, we’ll be introducing a brand new single player mode called 'GT League'. Based on the old 'GT mode' of previous titles, players can now look forward to racing through a series of cup competitions from beginner to pro levels, and even partake in endurance races." Sounds like something that should have launched with the game. Alongside that will come 12 new vehicles which are listed below.

News:: Xbox's December Games with Gold evoke exactly none of the holiday spirit

December is a time for holiday cheer -- snow glistening on the ground, people singing about reindeer, hot chocolate in a thermos. All feel-good stuff. Xbox's Games with Gold for December harness none of that spirit.

Next month, Xbox Live Gold subscribers get four games that don't have much of a running theme connecting them. On Xbox One, Warhammer: End Times -- Vermintide is free for the entirety of November. Swooping in at the mid-month mark, Telltale's Back to the Future: The Game -- 30th Anniversary Edition gets added. It's the second straight month that a Telltale title has been used as a Game with Gold.

Over on Xbox 360, the surprisingly-excellent Child of Eden is free for the first half of December. Although it was originally marketed as a Kinect game (and one of the better-functioning ones at that), it's still playable with a controller. For the second part of the month, pulpy action piece Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death takes over. As usual, both Xbox 360 titles are available on Xbox One through backward compatibility.

News:: The Wolfenstein II demo includes the full first level

Bethesda and MachineGames have put out a demo for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One that'll let you go through the first level. Should you decide to buy the full version (it's on sale this week), you'll be able to continue your progress from where you left off.

The beginning of the game is kind of its own thing in a novel/memorable sorta way. (I'm trying to sidestep spoilers here.) Even if you aren't sold on Wolfenstein II, it's worth experiencing the sequel's opening level if you played and liked 2014's Wolfenstein: The New Order.

While Wolfenstein II fell short for me scope-wise and it quickly loses steam toward the end, I had an overall better time with the game than I did with its predecessor. I'm hopeful we'll get a third installment before too long and MachineGames can do a lot more with America as a setting.

News:: Yesssss, inject all the Steam Awards art directly into my veins

The Steam Awards are back again, and that has one meaningful and positive side effect: The Steam Awards art is back again. This is what we should all be thankful for.

Last year's pieces were fantastic, and these ones are similarly great. But, there's one notable change in theme. These six pieces are all based on individual games, whereas 2016's were just random illustrations. From the top down, those games are: The Long Dark, Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator, Oxygen Not Included, Night in the Woods, Pyre, and Tooth & Tail.

You know what this means: New computer backgrounds. I'm currently rocking two from last year (astronauts on my laptop, whale on my desktop). A green-tailed dunking dog seems like something I'd want to look at every day.

News:: PUBG is coming to China but not without changes

There's been speculation about whether PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds will release in China and what all it would take to make that happen. Currently, the game is playable in the country through Steam, but it has not been approved by the government for official release. That's where things get tricky.

Last month, the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA) put out a statement about PUBG -- and battle royale games more generally -- noting that these titles are too violent and bloody in nature, go against China's cultural norms and ethics, and can negatively impact the youth.

Never say never, though. PUBG Corp. has partnered with publisher Tencent to "localize and operate the game by catering to the preferences of Chinese gamers." An official release is happening.

"[Tencent] will make adjustment to content ... and make sure they accord with socialist core values, Chinese traditional culture, and moral rules," the company said in a statement, as reported by Reuters.

PUBG Corp. provided more insight about the partnership in a press release. Tencent will help with "securing a stable network system, the expansion of servers, enhancing anti-cheat prevention technologies, and more." The companies also plan for "a fair and sustainable ecosystem by seeking co-existence with key stakeholders including live streaming platforms, media and PC cafes."

This'll make so much money. I just can't think about PUBG without picturing golden Homer.

News:: Steam's Autumn Sale is underway

It's the week of peak consumerism, and merchants would very much appreciate your cooperation. You, presumed holder of money, have options about where to spend it. Valve would prefer if you blew it on PC games.

Steam's 2017 Autumn Sale has started, and, as expected, there are some cheap PC titles. Some immediate standouts are: Middle-earth: Shadow of War for $35.99, The Evil Within 2 for $29.99, Nier: Automata for $35.99, Dark Souls III for $23.99, and Prey for $19.99.

But that's only .075 percent of the deals. There are 6,709 items that are discounted and it'd probably be best if you just looked for yourself. The sale runs through the morning of November 28.

Also attached to this event is the beginning of the second annual Steam Awards. Categories are silly (just like last year), with names like "Mom's Spaghetti Award," "The World Is Grim Enough Let's Just All Get Along Award," and "Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude! 2.0 Award." There are badges to be crafted for writing in nominations, so go do that if it's your style. If it isn't, then just go peruse the list of games you might buy. I know that's your style or else you wouldn't be reading this post.

News:: Used games Black Friday sales roundup (including Switch titles)

Tucked away from all these Black Friday madness this week are some excellent used game sales at GameStop and Gamefly. In fact, Gamefly is offering up Nintendo Switch used games at respectable pricing (unlike GameStop who's doing $54.99 on everything Switch used). For example, 1-2-3 Switch isn't necessary a worthwhile game at full price, but at $24.99 it's a way more convincing purchase.

If you're the type who likes to pay the absolute cheapest regardless of the game's condition (well, it should work at the very least) - then this sales roundup is for you.

Below, you'll find sales event and deals rounded up for all major platforms. If you click through and you've landed at GameStop, make sure you use code CAG16 to get 16% off to get prices shown. If you click through and land at Gamefly, you won't need to use any additional codes. The same situation applies to Walmart deals.

Spot an incorrect price or expired and out of stock deal? Let us know and we'll strike it out from the list. We'll be adding more deals as they surface. Finally, if you click-through and arrive at a NEW condition game but at a similar price - that's because our system has updated the SKU to the better deal.

News:: 12 tips for starting Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

It’s been a long wait, but after teasing us for a year and a soft launch down under, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is finally available for players worldwide. Players who have enjoyed the Animal Crossing series thus far should have no problem finding their footing with Pocket Camp and its eccentricities.

However, even if you’re a veteran of the series, there are still some aspects of game you might be unfamiliar with. So, allow me to help you with your first week in the game with this list of tips I’ve learned over the past month:

News:: Zelda: Breath of the Wild's newest free gift focuses on the little things

After all my time with Zelda: Breath of the Wild, this is something I haven't done. Apparently if you duck down and open a chest Link will throw out a punching animation, messing up his hand akin to the "foot meet chest" bit most people have seen before.

This is all detailed in the newest "Tips from the Wild" news channel update, by way of the Nintendo Switch's main menu. By going through the tips channel and accessing the game directly you'll learn about this little tidbit and net a scimitar for your troubles.

I bet you months from now someone is going to show me another little thing I missed, and I'll have to boot it up all over again to check for it.

News:: 'Gran Turismo Sport' brings back a classic solo racing mode

As good as it was for Polyphony Digital to finally reach the PS4 with Gran Turismo Sport, its game modes were a bit of a shock for long-time fans. What about those old-fashioned cups? You're about to get them back. The developers are releasing an update in December that will introduce GT League, a single-player mode which resurrects the classic GT modes of earlier games. True to form, you have to compete in a series of cup competitions, some of which require certain cars. You may need a car with a boxer engine, for example, or you might have to own a specific model.

News:: Sky Pirate's Den returning to Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Today sees Version 1.04 go live on the successful and well-received HD remaster of Square Enix' classic RPG Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

The new update will reintegrate the Sky Pirate's Den within the game, a feature previously absent from the re-release. The Sky Pirate's Den is a fun side-addition to the main game. As the player hits various mystery milestones, chibi sprites of heroes, villains and monsters will start to occupy a locale, that can be accessed from the menu. Each character that arrives in the den also unlocks a title for the player.

Though it doesn't add a whole lot to the game per se, it's a fun distraction to try and collect all the available characters, as well as surprising yourself by completing lengthy grinds you never knew you were on, such as "Walk 50,000 steps" or "Cast 200 Magicks" etc. Along with the re-implementation of this side-feature, Today will also see Japan receive a free PS4 theme based around the game's Eruyt Village.

News:: Review: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Booting up Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for the 28th consecutive day, I find myself in rhythm with the beats of the game. I know when to log in, how long I’ll play in a given sitting, and I find myself maximizing what little time I have at work to get the most out of it. It’s an effort to get to this point, but I’d say after nearly of a month and countless hours of playing, the effort has been well worth it.

News:: Blaster Master Zero is getting a free battle mode this week

Blaster Master Zero has been killing it with post-launch support. This 3DS and Switch platformer got new characters (which were free at launch for a limited time), multiple new modes, and now, we're getting a free battle arena gametype in patch 1.5.

This is a 1v1 mode that pits two players against each other, including the aforementioned "EX characters," which includes Shovel Knight, Gunvolt, and Shantae, among others. It seems like you can tweak the rules around a bit, and items, enemies, different stages, and battling in and out of the Sophia mech are in.

While it could have just been a little throwaway thing it actually looks pretty rad and robust, which makes the fact that it's free even sweeter.

News:: Bards can actually play instruments now in Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV's patch 4.15 just dropped, and a lot of the bigger additions like the new mech-based PVP mode are being overshadowed by "performance actions," which allow Bards to play music for the first time. The whole thing is surprisingly in-depth, as in, you'll have to actually learn how to play these songs with specific notes, with each hotbar action rigged up like a real keyboard.

Square Enix is warning people to not play anything other than Final Fantasy songs, as they don't want Nintendo complaining about folks putting up videos of Mario World 1-1 for example -- but you know it's going to happen in record time. The developers noted that if it gets out of hand they could remove the feature altogether, but hopefully it won't come to that given how fun it is.

News:: 'PUBG' will be tweaked to add socialist-friendly messages in China

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been this year's sleeper hit, and it's about to officially be released in China. The rub is, it'll have some pretty significant changes given the country's strict state-mandated censorship. Local publisher Tencent will "make adjustment to content and make sure they accord with socialist core values, Chinese traditional culture and moral rules," according to a statement obtained by Reuters. Last month, China said that the game was too violent and that the game's sale would likely be blocked because it strongly goes against the country's "socialist core values."

News:: Street Fighter Transformers are heading to Japan next year

We may be bearing witness to one of the most baffling crossovers since Archie meets The Punisher, as a range of Transformers have been announced that are based on popular characters from Capcom's legendary Street Fighter series.

Images of the Cybertronian warriors emerged yesterday and caused many a raised eyebrow, with people generally assuming they were fan-creations. However, official licensing was confirmed when the action figures then showed up on the official Tomy Takara website.

There are four Transformers in the range, based on poster boys Ryu & Ken, strongest woman in the world Chun Li, and massive bastard M. Bison/Vega. All four toys are repaints of currently existing Transformers, rather than original designs. The fighting game icons have been respectively adapted Convoy, Hot Rod, Arcee and -- of course -- Megatron.

If that isn't enough, the heads of Ryu, Ken and Bison transform into tiny figures of themselves, to be used as drivers for their vehicular form. Be sure to hit the gallery below for a selection of fun images.

The characters will be released in double-packs, with Ryu & Bison priced around $115 and the Ken and Chun pack a slightly cheaper $75. The Street Fighter x Transformers sets are currently a Japan exclusive, scheduled for release in May 2018.

News:: SNK's Soccer Brawl returns to the pitch on PS4, Switch and Xbox One

Today sees HAMSTER dust off another classic SNK arcade to join the expanding ACA Neo Geo range. This week, players can indulge in a round or two of future football with Soccer Brawl, which has been re-released for modern gaming platforms.

Originally launched in arcades way back 1992, Soccer Brawl was yet another "What would this sport be like in 20xx?" title, which was a popular concept for the Neo Geo catalogue, which also included games such as Super Baseball 2020 and Windjammers.

Eight teams from around the globe play the (not-so) beautiful game in a series of seven-a-side matches, with the cybernetically-enhanced players armed with stupendous "Power shots" and a pretty lax approach to sporting conduct.

News:: Jinx is launching a set of Overwatch hoodies this week

Jinx has been churning out some great Overwatch related clothing items this past year, and these new hoodies look to also deliver. Out this week, they just launched a new set of hoodies for D.Va, Lucio, Genji, Roadhog, Zarya, Reinhardt, and Widowmaker, which range from muted (Lucio) to busy (D.Va).

That's the initial salvo anyway, and "later in 2018" Soldier: 76, Junkrat, and Mercy will be getting their due. The rest of the cast (even Moira) are listed for sometime in 2018, but their designs are visible yet. Out of all these Lucio is probably my favorite -- I dig the color scheme and the fact that it's not too busy.
