News:: Pokémon Go expands 'Nearby' test areas, rolls out daily bonuses

Every time there's a Pokémon Go update, the number one thing its remaining players ask about is access to a tracker to help locate the little critters. This weekend Niantic Labs announced it's expanding the test area of its Nearby Pokémon feature from San Francisco to parts of Arizona, Seattle and the rest of the Bay Area. While we wait for that to roll out nation and world-wide, an update that adds the previously-announced daily bonus/streak bonus scheme is about to arrive on Android and iOS.

News:: Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Sweet Roll

Prior to the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, Bethesda teamed up with the Sydney-based Bourke Street Bakery in order to produce limited-run batches of sweet rolls that would be used to advertise the new ports of the publisher’s five-year-old role-playing game.

While these sweet rolls were initially only given away at select bakeries in Sydney, on each day of PAX Australia in Melbourne, the first 1,000 attendees were given these cakes to consume while lining up for the convention.

News:: How A Filthy Old Arcade Cabinet Is Restored To Its Former Glory

As you can probably guess, a lot of old arcade cabinets from the 80s aren’t exactly in the best shape in 2016. That doesn’t mean they can’t be salvaged though, as long as you’re willing to put a little love, cash and elbow grease into it.

News:: Dishonored, A Stealth Game For People Who Hate Stealth

I’m terrible at stealth games. I lack the patience, the focus, and the discipline to unravel the knot at the center of each level. Don’t get me wrong, I love sneaking around in the shadows. I just don’t like getting caught. And I always get caught. But while some games punish this sort of behavior, kicking the player back to a loading screen whenever they stick a toe out of line, Dishonored isn’t one of them. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Dishonored is as intrigued by its players’ mistakes as their exploits.

News:: A game about driving tractors is more popular on Steam than Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

That's right, Farming Simulator 17, a game about being a modern farmer and driving expensive tractors is currently destroying the just-released Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on Steam, at least numbers wise. According to Steam's own stats, Farming Simulator 17 is number 23 on the top 100 games list (at the time of writing) with 26,044 players today, while Infinite Warfare is number 36 with over 10,000 less at 15,436 players. Obviously not a terrible debut for most games, but pretty bad for one of the world's most popular series, at least on PC.

While some may rush to celebrate this being the death knell for CoD, there are a few potential reasons for this. For one, Farming Simulator has been out for nearly two weeks and costs $25 less. Infinite Warfare is also for sale on the Windows 10 Store, which can't play with the Steam version of the game for some reason.

News:: The Week In Games: Dishonorable Mention

It’s time to return this week to Bethesda’s macabre steampunk heaven where the sun is only ever rising or setting and probably no one ever takes a shower. I can’t wait to embark on yet another stealth adventure with all of the best intentions in mind only to abandon my “perfect” play-through the minute something goes wrong.

News:: World Of Warcraft's Most Popular Legacy Server Is Returning

Shortly before BlizzCon, the people behind recently shut down World of Warcraft legacy server Nostalrius put Blizzard on notice. “If Blizzard doesn’t make an announcement to honour their own core values, be sure that we will,” they wrote. BlizzCon’s come and gone, and Nostalrius is coming back.

News:: Winning The World Of WarCraft Arena World Championship Is Sweaty Business

Professional competitive gamers are often derided as fake athletes. After all, who could possibly compare sitting in front of a computer screen mashing buttons on a keyboard and mouse to running several miles on a soccer pitch or ramming into the linesman opposite you play, after play?

News:: Gravity Rush 2 is exactly as I'd expected, and that's a damn good thing

I would be lying if I said that Gravity Rush 2 wasn’t the first game I ran to the moment I got through the door on day one of PAX Australia. I know that Steven Hansen has already previewed it at E3, but considering that this has been my most anticipated game of both 2016 and 2017, I felt compelled to play it for myself.

The demo on show at PAX Australia had two courses to choose from, with the easier one designed to familiarise players to the game’s controls and combat. The more challenging course would then introduce players to the newer gameplay elements that are debuting in Gravity Rush 2. Thankfully, as there was no queue behind me when I played the demo, I got a chance to try out both.

News:: Blackheart's Revenge is a perfect example of what Heroes of the Storm Brawls should be

Brawls are basically fresh out of the oven for Heroes of the Storm, but they've already been pretty divisive. First up was the Punisher arena, which assigned random heroes to each player, and was generally very well received. Rounds were quick, the randomness was silly, and it forced you to get out of your comfort zone -- it felt like a "Brawl."

The second, Hammer Time, was a lot less in the spirit of the arcade-like gametype. The gimmick was "what if everyone was [the Siege Tank] Sergeant Hammer?" and was essentially just a regular match on the standard map Towers of Doom. Some sessions lasted as long, if not longer than the average non-Brawl match. It was...not great, but that's how the cookie crumbles with Brawls.

Blackheart's Revenge, however, a Brawl I was able to play at BlizzCon, has the right stuff.

News:: Rick Fox's Esport Teams Can't Stop Losing

It’s been almost a year since retired NBA player Rick Fox purchased Gravity Gaming for $1 million. Choosing to rename the organization and expand it beyond its humble origins, Echo Fox was born, a burgeoning esport enterprise that seemed, in part, to signal a new era for competitive gaming. If Fox, who claimed earlier this year that in 2018, esports would be “on par with the NHL,” saw his future fortune in the scattered tea leaves of professional gaming, maybe the hype was to be believed after all.

News:: Ben Heck's Atari junk keyboard, part 1

The Ben Heck Show - Episode 261 - Ben Heck's Atari Junk Keyboard Part 1: Enter the Matrix
Time for Ben and Atari to make beautiful music together -- almost. The team creates an instrument inspired by the sounds you'd hear on an Atari console, using a technique called circuit bending. This means Ben gets his digital flip-flops on and creates the digital circuits from scratch, combining it with an almost full-size piano keyboard and a lot of analysis using an oscilloscope. If you're interested in how this might sound, Felix connects variable resistors (potentiometers) with the circuit and gives it a test run. Be sure to check out the next part to find out how the build comes along, and join the element14 Community to tell us about your music hacks.
