News:: Next Splatoon 2 splatfest will attempt to answer a question as old as time

Today, Japanese Splatoon 2 players are battling it out over the surprisingly deep debate of base desires versus life's natural beauty. The West is planning on following suit with its own philosophical battle, albeit a far simpler one.

The next splatfest, which goes live in America and Europe next week, simply asks which came first: The Chicken or The Egg? Pearl is pretty sure that The Chicken clucked itself into life first, while Marina, apparently horrified by such creationism, is going Team Egg. Either way, I know that the best way to settle this ancient brain-bender is to shoot each other in the face with ink for 24 hours.

Oddly enough, all of these recent theological topics might actually be getting to our favourite rap-rock duo, whose conversations have started to go down some... interesting paths.

News:: Nintendo Switch: A Year in Review

One year ago today, the Nintendo Switch graced store shelves worldwide and started a frenzy. We’re not talking 2006 Wii levels of crazy, but the Switch was pretty hard to find for a couple of months. Even with the console flying off shelves, Nintendo didn’t pack the launch with an abundance of titles. What Nintendo lacked in day one software, it more than made up for with a constant stream of titles released over the past year.

Let’s take a look back over the first year of the Switch and see what Nintendo did right, what it did wrong and how the future looks for its hybrid platform.

News:: Five times the Razzies were WRONG

There was a time in my life where I swore by the Razzies and Razzie nominations. While the Oscars promote some of the best movies of the year, the Razzies are the polar opposite. They talk about the worst movies of a previous year and revel in beating up a popular target. As I grew up though, I stopped caring about the Razzies and which movies got nominated. Oh sure, I would still look up the nominees and laugh at which movies were chosen, but the award ceremony just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Making fun of a Razzie movie is usually not hard to do. More often than not, the movies that are nominated are pretty terrible and either were destroyed by critics, had a poor box office performance, or most importantly, are easy targets. The Razzies just felt too easy for me. Back when I was reviewing movies independently, I would usually see a bunch of the Razzie nominees throughout the year just by chance, so I already got my fill of bashing a bad movie. I had my fun, and I moved on. Since the Razzies mime the Oscars so much, they announce their nominees and have their awards ceremony the day before the Academy of Motion Picture's events.

And look, I know that there's a whole discussion to have about the Oscars (we'll have that next week), but at least you can make a case about celebrating and championing the movies that have succeeded and are culturally relevant. There's a reason to celebrate the movies that get Oscar nominations. Usually they're pretty good movies. Usually (coughCrashcough). The Razzies just seem like they're beating a dead horse. These movies are bad, we know they're bad, so let's just make fun of them one more time. It's kind of a moot point.

But there are those times where the Razzies are just plain wrong when they pick on a movie. The Razzies can lambaste a movie as much as they want, but sometimes the movies are actually pretty good despite all of the hate that they get. Why do these movies get all of the hate? I'm not too sure to be quite honest. Maybe the acting is weird, maybe the movie is dumb, maybe there's a weird concept or a stupid scene thrown in? Regardless, I'm here to defend the movies that the Razzies decided were either the worst movie of the year or was a nominee for the worst movie of the year. Someone needs to watch out for the little guy!

News:: Four minute video looks at the Valkyria Chronicles 4 battle system

Sega have released an extended video looking at the in-game battle system of their upcoming strategy sequel Valkyria Chronicles 4. The video showcases the series' turn-based warfare, as well as advertising some of the new iterations classes.

Obviously the video is in Japanese, but any VC veterans will instantly recognise most of the mechanics on display here. The series has been praised in the past for its interesting and intense tactical combat, and it looks like this latest chapter in the dramatic series will be no exception.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 launches in Japan in March on PS4 and Summer on Nintendo Switch. It is scheduled for release in the West on PS4, Xbox One and Switch later in 2018. A demo is currently available on the Japanese PSN store.

News:: I demand a recount on BlazBlue character popularity poll

Back in November, we reported that Arc System Works were holding a popularity poll for the wild and wacky cast of their anime fighter, BlazBlue. This week, the votes have been tallied and the results released. Something must've gone very wrong.

Y'see, best character Taokaka, who you all voted for, hasn't made the Top 20. This is pretty baffling, and one can only assume that there's been some kind of mixup at the polling booths. Either way, this is the most disgusted I've been with a show of public opinion since Brexit.

In total, some 77,000 votes were calculated, though it is very important to point out that you could vote for a character every day, and thus many of those votes likely come from the same individuals. Presented for your consideration, here are the Top 20 most popular BlazBlue characters. Which, funnily enough, features a lot of attractive guys 'n' gals.

1. Ragna the Bloodedge
2. Hazama
3. Hibiki Kohaku

4. Yuuki Terumi

5. Jin Kisaragi

6. Mai Natsume
7. Celica Ayasuki Mercury
8. Noel Vermillion
9. Nu-13
10. Es

11. Makoto Nanaya
12. Lambda-11

13. Tsubaki Yayoi
14. Rachel Alucard

15. Platinum the Trinity
16. Kokonoe

17. Hakumen
18. Nine the Phantom

19. Naoto Kurogane
20. Bullet

The BlazBlue crew will next be making an appearance in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, which launches on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch this Summer.

News:: Check out this beautiful Zelda: Breath of the Wild soundtrack set

Part of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's appeal lies in its rich, dreamlike score, which bewitches players as they guide Link onwards to face untold dangers. Nintendo Japan have unveiled the official soundtrack release for the title, and its as lavish as the game itself.

The box set features five CDs, featuring a staggering 211 tracks. The discs are packaged in a slick case that features art from the 2017 adventure. There are two editions of the soundtrack, First-Print and Regular, with the former featuring a classy white hardcover and a mini-music player, pre-loaded with selected tracks from the collection.

Now comes the price-taggery. The First-Print edition will cost around ¥7,000 (or $66) while the regular edition runs a little cheaper at ¥5,000 ($47). Of course you also need to weigh in shipping and tax additions for your respective countries.

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild Soundtrack is available for pre-order be at Amazon.jp, Play-Asia and CDJapan.

News:: Canada's largest video gaming expo returns next weekend

You're invited to join Destructoid for an amazing weekend at EGLX March 9th-11th at The International Centre, Mississauga. This a shameless shill for our parent company and the closest thing to bringing you a full-on Destructoid convention overrun by cat girls (soon), but it's legit. Nintendo, Microsoft, Blizzard, WB, MSI and others will be there.

I guess PlayStation doesn't think Canadians like video games, so we're just going to have fun without you. Nya. There's also two Destructoid parties this year.

On the floor we'll have tons of Switch games including Pokkén Tournament DX, VR experiences and games, massive esports tournaments and a free to play retro-themed arcade. We have cosplay, a not-to-be-missed scavenger hunt inspired by Ready Player One, Nerf battles and even an all-day Minecraft build contest. We'll also have artist booths and stuff for your whining smaller clones in the kid's area.

This is our biggest show yet: EGLX 2018 is proud to host over 150 Exhibitors, a game swap with over 60 tables featuring hands-on experiences, and the first glimpse at upcoming industry trends and forecasts. Over 24 industry panels are scheduled including developer talks from the makers of Cuphead. From our staff you can come smell Jonathan Devore, Chris Carter, Brett Makedonski, Wes Loves Occams, Torch, and Lyle McDouchebag from our Youtube channel.
