News:: Heel-turn: Kain's Legacy

[I remember playing the hell out of those old PS1 demo discs back in the day, and I must have gone through that one section of Soul Reaver over thirty damn times. I miss those things so much. It's just not the same when you can download it so easily.

I remember buying whole magazines, immediately throwing away the paper bullshit, and staring giddily at the little cardboard sleeve that showed me all the awesome games I'd finally get to try.

Kerrik52 took me right down memory lane and threw his hat in the ring for this month's Bloggers Wanted prompt. Now his words are right here on the Front Page! If you think you've got what it takes, head over to the cblogs and slap some thoughts together. - Kevin]

Let me tell you of a man who escaped death's door. Let me tell you of a king who brought the world to its knees. Let me tell you of a god who shaped Nosgoth's history. Let me tell you of Kain.

News:: New Operators Finka and Lion will bring game-changing skills to Rainbow Six Siege

Today at the Rainbow Six Invitational tournament in Montreal, publisher Ubisoft revealed two new Operators heading the door-kicking shooter as part of the Rainbow Six Siege's next wave of DLC.

Lion and Finka are coming in March as part of Operation: Chimera, which is the first season in year three of Siege. The new Operators further the game's concept of "Global" skills; effects which, when activated, immediately cover the entire map. This is similar to last season's punky hacker Dokkaebi and her "logic bomb" attack.

Lion, from France, brings a flying drone to the fight, which will immediately scan the entire map and outline every player on the opposing team for your whole squad to see for a few scant seconds. The only way to avoid detection is to stay completely still until the drone finishes scanning. Not only is this skill effective in the early part of the round to locate hot areas, such as bomb sites, it can also be used in conjunction with smoke grenades to give your guys and gals eyes in the dark. Lion can launch this drone three times per round and it's a very powerful recon tool.

Russian operative Finka is a support character, joining Doc as one of Siege's few healers. At the press of a button, Finka administers a 20% health boost to her entire team, overclocking team members who are already at full health. Activating this skill also revives any DBNO team-members, giving them a chance to get to their feet without exposing would be rescuers to attack. Popped before an assault, Finka's skill sets the team up with a health advantage for any room-clearing stand-off.

The new Operators are part of a wave of new content currently lined up for Siege, including the run 'n' gun action of the upcoming Outbreak event, which will see a selection of the roster, including new kids Lion and Finka, fight off hordes of grotesque creatures in apocalyptic new maps.

Operation Chimera goes live on March 6. Rainbow Six Siege is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

News:: Fan project turns Overwatch into a fighting game

Overwatch has become a staple in competitive gaming, so, it's no surprise that plenty of fans might wonder how the heroes of Overwatch might fare in a different competitive scene.

No, this isn't the Overwatch kart racer we've all been clamoring for, but the folks over at TGN saw fit to put together a video showcasing what Overwatch could be like as a fighting game.

News:: Review: Secret of Mana (Remake)

Secret of Mana memories have been popping up like daises and inserting themselves into my life. I have so many memories of replaying this classic, from solo runs to two-player marathons at my friend's beach house, to full-on three-player parties with the SNES Multitap.

Just recently it also came back in a big way on the SNES Classic system, and now, in 3D-remake form on several modern systems. The ability to compare both takes almost simultaneously has been enlightening, and allows for a lot of the flaws of the 3D version to shine through.

News:: Dynasty Warriors 9 is a technical mess on consoles

The mostly negative reception to Dynasty Warriors 9 is not something I expected. While I haven't been a fan of every single entry that Koei Tecmo has produced, the developer seemed to be getting better ever since the release of Dynasty Warriors 7. Then something happened and its games started to get really lazy. Sadly, it looks like 9 might take the cake for being the laziest game the studio was made thus far.

Over on Digital Foundry, the team has delved into the performance profile for the game running on both versions of the PS4 and Xbox One and the results are, quite frankly, despicable. For a game coming out in 2018, there is no excuse for sub 20 FPS gameplay. This is like N64 levels of performance, just that we're in the future and should be making technological progress.

Neither console turns in solid performance and you aren't even looking at anything close to 60 FPS (which was a series staple in the PS2 era). I understand that performance comes at the cost of gameplay innovation, but nothing about Dynasty Warriors 9 is innovative or even original. This is just another example of a developer chasing current gameplay trends to try and make a quick buck.

That being said, if you were thinking about upgrading your console to get better performance out of the latest Dynasty Warriors, save your cash. Maybe some patches can fix these issues, but I honestly doubt that.

News:: Rocket League Rivals brings absurd car-based soccer to the real world

This week Hot Wheels unveiled Augmoto, an AR-enhanced course that makes the brand's track races a lot more video game-like. However, in the other direction it's also introducing Rocket League Rivals, a remote control vehicle kit that brings the popular console game's madcap soccer-but-with-cars action into the real world. Based on the number of times our cars flipped over or ran off the track while playing at this week's Toy Fair, it seems to have captured the spirit of the game, at least.

News:: Ultra Instinct Goku coming to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

Ultra Instinct is one of the better additions to the Dragon Ball canon introduced in Dragon Ball Super, as it's a form that allows Goku to basically dodge any attack and looks cool as heck. And now that form is coming to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 in a way we didn't expect.

Goku's "perfected" Ultra Instinct (complete with silver hair) has yet to be seen in the series proper, but now we have a good look at Goku's final form ever (since the series is ending). In Xenoverse 2, he has "Accelerated Battle Aura" which charges his ki and allows him to perform another attack even if his rush attack misses.

With Jiren coming as well, fans can relive their favorite Tournament of Power moments. Unfortunately there are no pricing or release date details as of this writing.

News:: Broly and Bardock coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ

The first two DLC characters have been revealed for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and they definitely get one big request out of the way early. Broly and Bardock were confirmed in this month's issue of V-Jump, and look pretty damn cool.

Broly's level 3 super is "Gigantic Meteor" which just blows up the place, while Bardock's references the Episode of Bardock special in which he turns into a Super Saiyan with his "Revenger Assault" super.

While these two fighters are definitely on the DLC leak list floating around out there, I kinda hope the rest of it doesn't come to pass. Broly is great, and has the recognition, but I would've preferred Kale from Dragon Ball Super in this role to fill out the playable women in the roster. But there's still a chance Caulifla or their fusion Kefla could make it in someday.

No pricing or release date details have been confirmed as of yet.
