News::Dusting off Ubisofts I Am Alive

GamesAsylum looks back at Ubisoft's I Am Alive: "Its easy to consider I Am Alive as a forbearer to Ubisofts own ZombiU. The difficulty level is challenging but not unfair, while ammo has to be used sparingly. The final scoring page and retry system too bare some similarities, not to mention the setting a ruined city that was evacuated in a hurry. It was undoubtedly Dark Souls which influenced ZombiU the most, but I Am Alive should still be remembered for playing a part in shaping the Wii U system seller"

News::Hearth Stone Pixel Judge Preview

PJ: First of all, let's address what Hearthstone actually is. Simply put, it is a card game akin to Magic: The Gathering. You have a health pool, a deck, you play cards, things die, and everybody has fun...apart from that guy who lost, of course. What makes it so good however, is Blizzard. Now I am not a Blizzard fanboy, but I must concede that everything Blizzard touches turns to gold. StarCraft is one of the most revolutionary RTSs of all time, with professional tournaments and leagues; Warcraft spawned a community larger than some countries; and Diablo is directly responsible for a global decline in productivity. Hearthstone has some big boots to fill, and my god, they burst at the seams.

News::The Best Japanese Indie Games Youve Never Played Sweet Home Edition

Allisa James from DualShockers finds really obscure Japanese indie games and writes about them. This month she cheats a little and writes about Sweet Home, a title that, while technically not "indie," is still an incredibly obscure game that inspired the Resident Evil series. It was the first survival-horror and helped pioneer the genre. Sweet Home is the tale of five people who venture into the abandoned mansion of famed artist Mamiya Ichirou, intent on filming a documentary while trying to restore Mamiyas works. Upon entering the mansion, the group discovers that the ghost of Lady Mamiya, Ichirous wife, haunts the place and she does not intend to let the intruders escape with their lives. The crew must try to find a way out of the haunted mansion alive and lay Lady Mamiya to rest once and for all in the process.

Riot completely reworked Xerath in a recent patch. His new kit upset a lot of veteran Xerath players who believe he is weaker now but that is not exactly true. Xerath is actually much stronger now. His new kit caters to a very specific style of play and you can be very successful with him if you utilize it properly. He was meant to be a long distance artillery champion and his new abilities definitely work towards that end.

For all the zen-like, dot-eating mastery that youll strive for in the long term, Ikarugas early appeal is sustained remarkably effectively by the base elements of gaming that were often so quick to dismiss. Developed for the now antique hardware shared by the Dreamcast and Naomi arcade board, Ikaruga isnt exactly pumping polygons, but it still looks fantastic."

News::Interview: Bethesda's Pete Hines on the legacy of Wolfenstein and the ESO subscription model

CVG: In his role as VP of PR and marketing at Bethesda, Pete Hines has helped ship some of the company's biggest games, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3. While the company remains coy on the inevitable announcement of Fallout 4, Bethesda will ship three titles this year: Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Evil Within and The Elder Scrolls Online. All are interesting for the way they seem to shirk conventional publishing wisdom in 2014: one is a single-player FPS, another is a survival horror game and the last is a subscription-based MMO. In the interview, conducted during a recent Wolfenstein preview event in Sydney, we touch on Bethesda's willingness to pursue genres and models the rest of the industry is avoiding, the legacy of the Wolfenstein IP, and whether any new titles are set to be announced in 2014.

News::Steam developers can now start sales without Valve

Developers with games on Steam can initiate sales without seeking approval from Valve now that new Steamworks tools have gone live. Promotions can be scheduled up to two months in advance and the discount percentage and sale promotion can also be customized.

It's worth mentioning that game discounts have a maximum run time of two weeks and promos for an individual title have to be spaced at least two months apart. Keeping that in mind, we're not likely to be flooded with Steam sales -- at least not any more than usual.

It's nice to see Valve give developers more autonomy. Sweet, delicious freedom.

Remember the whole Razor scooter fad? Like, from back in 1999? And when there were even games about it back on the PlayStation 1? Well here I am in 2014 writing about the development of a new Razor scooter game in the works for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U. I can't believe I just wrote this sentence.

Renegade Kid (makers of such titles as Moon, Dementium, Mutant Mudds Deluxe ) are developing Razor Global Domination Pro Tour, which will be out sometime in 2015. How there is a market for this at all is just beyond me.

The concept of "real-time" has begun bleeding into the otherwise turn-based world of Nova-111 , a super-neat-looking game from ex-PixelJunk developers. I'd recommend watching this trailer to get a better handle on what that means, exactly. In short: "good things."

I got a bit of a mobile vibe from the footage, but Nova-111 is thankfully planned for release on PC, Mac, and Linux this year. As much as I like the look of the aforementioned gameplay premise, it's the sci-fi theme and charming personality that push this one over the top for me.

News::Sell your eggs to afford these fine Assassin's Creed bags

Like Ubisoft and Assassin's Creed, do you have more money than you know what to do with? Buy these $500 Black Flag bags, then.

Yes, they’re not cheap. But both bags are made with Italian full-grain bovine leather, with authentic details and exquisite workmanship. And both bags are extremely limited: only 100 of each have been produced – so once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

Actually, I'm cool with both the messenger bag and sailor bag. Game merchandise is usually tacky and cheap. These are actually sort of nice. Not $500 nice, but nice. Maybe reach a healthy middle ground next time, Ubisoft. Something more accessible to all fans than a premium limited 200 run that costs more than the consoles the series is played on.

It reminds me of when Resident Evil 4 came out and I wanted a replica of Leon's jacket. Probably for the best that never happened. What am I, some kind of nerd?
