News:: Rust has boats and a tense new helicopter event

For me, Rust tends to bounce between two very different experiences. Sometimes, it's a nerve-wracking game about establishing a safe haven where you won't be found and promptly murdered in the night. Other times, it's a reckless game about getting into trouble just for the thrill of it all.

Today's update speaks to the latter experience -- it introduces player-controlled boats. The motorized rowboats appear on shores across the map and are big enough to fit a driver and three passengers. Beyond just screwing around, they'll also prove useful for reaching newly-added flotsam junkpiles.

The update also revamps forests with "much greater visual variety" and denser foliage better suited to hiding small bases, along with many other additions like hairstyles and floating corpses.

The other big upgrade: the CH-47 Chinook event. It's in. "This transport helicopter is a periodic server event which will appear offshore and make its way to a designated drop zone to resupply. Drop zones are located at most of the Tier 1 and above monuments, and the helicopter will orbit the area in an attempt to neutralize any threats (read: players). After this, it will approach the drop zone and release its payload." Everyone on the server will be able to see where this precious cargo has dropped on the map, and players can only loot it once it's been properly disarmed. That process takes time. Good luck!

News:: Persona 5 Joker Nendoroid on the way from Good Smile Co.

How adorable. The toy-enthusiasts at Good Smile Co. have revealed a new Nendoroid based on Persona 5's window-leaping protagonist, Joker, or Akira, or Fred, or whatever we're calling him now.

The new figurine, which stands around 110mm in height, comes with a selection of cute accessories, like a handgun and a dagger, as well as the usual array of alternate hands, hair and faceplates, allowing you to twist the Phantom Thieves' captain into all sorts of dynamic poses.

The Persona 5 Protagonist Phantom Thief Nendoroid is not yet showing up on the official Good Smile Co. website, but is available for pre-order over at amiami, at a cost of around ¥4,350, or $40, not including shipping or any relevant customs charges. Joker should come crashing through your skylight, or letterbox, this September.

News:: Long Gone Days is an RPG about modern conflicts

Long Gone Days is an RPG about modern-day conflicts and the human cost of engagements. The game, which recently launched on Steam's Early Access platform, features multiple combat systems and pleasant sprite art that work together to show plenty of promise.

In Long Gone Days, you play a Rourke. He's a young soldier who shows promise, and as the game opens, Rourke's given an opportunity to showcase his skills on an important mission. Rourke and his compatriots are members of The Core, a paramilitary organization whose members are raised and trained underground. After a short introduction, Rourke's on a mission to Poland, where he is ordered to provide long-range support for his squad as they apply pressure to an insurgent force. Things—as they tend to do for RPG protagonists—don't go as planned. Shortly after eliminating his targets, Rourke learns that The Core isn't as egalitarian as they seem; they're a shadowy organization willing to tackle dirty jobs. Without knowing it, Rourke has incited a war in Poland.

News:: Clash Blaster Neo arrives in time for Splatoon 2 splatfests

Friday is here once again, which means it's time to check out the latest weapon to make its way to Nintendo's arena-shooter Splatoon 2. This week, its the neatly-titled Clash Blaster Neo.

The Clash Blaster Neo is a brand new variant of the Clash Blaster. The original is known for its very short range but high-impact, splatting a nearby foe in just two hits.  Its visual design features crayons mounted on its body. This Neo variant comes equipped with a Curling Bomb sub and Tenta Missile special.

This weekend also sees two new Splatfests take place in North America and Europe. The U.S. will enter into a sporting conflict (literally) of Baseball versus Soccer. In Europe, players will battle over Salty or Sweet Popcorn. Remember that the real winners choose secret answer three: Don't eat in cinemas.

The Clash Blaster Neo will go live in Splatoon 2 tonight in the U.S. with Europe and Japan to follow early tomorrow. Have a great weekend, squid-kids!

News:: SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy joins an already stuffed September release schedule

Normally, when we’re talking about gaming, November is the month to beat. This is when most, if not all, of the heavy hitters of the industry release, trying to get as much of that holiday cash as possible. That’s a normal year, but the second half of 2018 is anything but normal because of Red Dead Redemption 2. The oft-delayed western is an absolute monster. It already scared this year’s Call of Duty out of its normal release period and now I can’t help but think more titles are trying to get out the door before it drops at the end of the October.

Maybe that’s why September is turning into the hottest month in gaming. Over the past week or so we’ve seen confirmations for the releases of Dragon Quest XI, Spider-Man, and the long-rumored/recently confirmed Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Those three huge titles join another behemoth in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, yet another game is staking its claim in the September calendar.

Announced during its PAX East panel, NIS America confirmed SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy will drop on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on September 7, aka Spider-Man day. Daring release date if you ask me, one that harkens back to January 26, 2010 when Capcom thought it best to release Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on the same day as Mass Effect 2 and MAG.

Here’s to hoping people don’t forget about it because I had a lot of fun with the game when I played a preview of it earlier this year. Consider me a day-one purchase, but if you’re not on board yet, perhaps this trailer featuring new addition to the roster Shermie from The King of Fighters will change your mind.

News:: Check out this Chun-Li outfit for the Handler in Monster Hunter World

Why yes, I totally would like to dress up my handler in Monster Hunter World as Chun-Li. Good thinking! And kitting myself out as Dante from Devil May Cry? Uh huh. I'm all about that too.

Capcom has previewed its upcoming slate of DLC for World and there's some fun stuff on the way.

The first half of the video covers some newly-released hairstyles, stamps, and dance emotes, while the latter half shows off new items: Mega Man stamps (April 13), Devil May Cry stamps (April 27), a cool gun-wielding Dante gesture (April 27), and the Chun-Li Handler outfit (April 27).

The unlock criteria for the Dante armor set isn't known yet, but I hope it'll be easier for me than the quest for Ryu's outfit. I struggled with that one a bit more than I'd care to admit.

News:: Call of Duty: WWII checks out Egypt in new 'Map Briefings' video series

Activision have started a new video series to dole out tips and hints for online multiplayer in Call of Duty: WWII. The new "Map Briefings" series looks at current and upcoming maps and offers information to help you get started.

The first video looks at the new Egypt map, which is dropping as part of upcoming DLC package The War Machine. The video is short, slick and informative, featuring cool, digitally-drawn strategies from hosts Matt Abbot and Gabriel Galaz.

I guess the only negative that comes from videos such as these is that they offer a lot of people the same advice. So you turn up to that sweet, lonely sniping spot to find that there's a party going on, and you were last to arrive. Still, I think its a good idea and well-presented.

Call of Duty: WWII is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The War Machine DLC drops on PS4 April 10, with other platforms to follow soon thereafter.

News:: Velvet Room assistants step into the spotlight in new Persona Dancing Trailers

It's time to kick the weekend off in style, as the gracious comperes for upcoming rhythm-action games Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night have gotten their own time in the spotlight, courtesy of new trailers from Atlus.

Both titles have, essentially, the same plot, where each game's respective protagonists are whisked away to a dance competition held by their recognised Velvet Room assistants. Today's first video sees Persona 3's Elizabeth throwing shapes on the dance-floor, before Margaret shows up to do some big-sister shtick.

The second trailer features Persona 5's good cop/bad cop jailers, Caroline and Justine. The twins, naturally, have some silly synchronicity to their routine, which made me grin. Interestingly, Theodore from Persona 3 then shows up to be the most awkward third-wheel in dance floor history.

Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are both set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita.

News:: System Shock is now back to Nightdive's 'original vision'

After a brief hiatus and some soul searching, Nightdive Studios is back on track with System Shock.

The developers shared a status update today on Kickstarter to assure that the overly-ambitious project is now "back to the original vision we shared with you at the start of our Kickstarter campaign - this time with more reliable performance and higher fidelity visuals thanks to the Unreal Engine."

"We had a brief respite, and took the time necessary to make some tough decisions which included saying goodbye to some of the developers that you've come to know through past updates," said Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick. "What we're left with is a concentrated team that consists of the original developers who worked on the Unity demo."

He added that despite some sweeping changes, the team isn't starting fresh. "We have been able to re-use the majority of work we've done over the past year and we're making significant progress in a very short amount of time. With that said we'll be inviting our highest tier backers to privately test the game beginning in September at which point we estimate that the game will be fully playable, from start to finish. The majority of the art won't be finished, but we'll be ready to start high-level testing."

If all goes according to plan, we'll be playing System Shock in 2020. That seems fitting. The full backer update is worth a look, particularly for a word on the game's newly-refocused music direction.

News:: Hearthstone's spooky Witchwood expansion is out next week

Recently Hearthstone announced its next big wave of content, and they're following up on the start of that wave rather quickly.

Witchwood, the horror themed expansion that centers around Worgen, among other denizens of the Warcraft world, is coming on April 12. It brings back the alternate PVE element they've been pushing lately, as it'll feature "Monster Hunt" -- a new gauntlet-esque mode with unique heroes.

The expansion will also feature a new "In a Dark Wood" card back, the Greymane hero, and the echo (you can play them multiple times after playing them with ghost copies that disappear) and spell keywords. It also has a neat sounding worgen effect, where certain cards change forms between human and worgen in your hand between rounds and remain in that form when played.

News:: Ghost Recon Wildlands is getting a Splinter Cell event

Ubisoft has another neat event lined up for Ghost Recon Wildlands following that Predator tie-in.

Today's teaser sets the stage for the return of Sam Fisher and, crucially, Michael Ironside. Gosh it's good to hear his voice again. I think it's getting to be about time for a new Splinter Cell. Hope so, anyway.

We'll get the full details on the Wildlands event on Monday, April 9.

News:: Image & Form and Zoink's new collective studio just hired Ed Valiente, former Nintendo of Europe business development manager

Image & Form and Zoink made waves in the indie community when they announced that they were going to be forming a Voltron of a company together -- Thunderful.

For reference the former is the creator of the masterful SteamWorld Dig series, and Zoink crafted the hilarious Stick It to the Man!. They definitely have a lot of potential, and now they've increased their cachet a bit with a new addition.

Thunderful just announced that they've brought on Ed Valiente as Director of Publishing -- as in, the former Nintendo of Europe business development manager. Valiente specifically has a lot of experience working in the indie scene, making strides to improve the 3DS and Wii U eShop compared to the original DSi and Wii incarnations.

It remains to be seen what Thunderful will cook up next, but I think they're in good hands so far.

News:: Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn slam dunks onto consoles and PC in June

Saber Interactive's Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn has been given a release date of June 5. The tongue-in-cheek fighting sequel is coming to PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

A Legend Reborn is the two-decades-later follow-up to Shaq-Fu, which appeared on 16-bit formats way back in 1994 and starred then Orlando Magic megastar Shaquille O'Neal. In the game O'Neal, portraying himself, took on a variety of aliens and monsters in dull punch-ups.

Wisely, the sequel is choosing to to go down the scrolling brawler route, rather than step back into the competitive one-on-one market. A new trailer has been released which advertises the game's irreverent, knowing tone. The game will retail for around $20 digitally, and $30-$40 for the physical release, although the latter will include unannounced DLC.

I'm readily game for a laugh, but I can't help but think that this is a dubious undertaking. Even if you're being tongue-in-cheek, your game still has to be great to stand up in a market of amazing releases. Self-parody will only get you so far, just ask Bubsy.

Perhaps I'll be proven very wrong come June 5, when Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn, launches on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

News:: Hyrule Warriors Switch gets a new Rupee light incentive

I've been talking to a fair amount of people about Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, and they're torn. On one hand, they've played the original for hundreds of hours, lovingly grinding for new items and characters across the game's adventure maps. On the other, they've played the game for hundreds of hours already and may want to delve into something new.

Either way, if you missed all of the 3DS DLC, you're probably due for another playthrough. And if you're so inclined, you can pick up this new Switch port with a Green Rupee Light. You can grab it as a bundle (£49.99) or as a standalone item (£11.99) on the Nintendo UK store, though "various other retailers" will be stocking it eventually (you can find it here at GameStop)

Wait, a collector's edition that actually lets us buy the one thing we want from it separately?

News:: The Messenger is the Ninja Gaiden successor we deserve

At PAX East this year I got the chance to sit down with the developers of The Messenger, Sabotage Studio's new game that follows a young ninja on a simple mission: deliver a mysterious scroll with the hopes of saving his clan from some less-than-friendly demons.

It's apparent from a glance that Ninja Gaiden is the main source of inspiration, but The Messenger is hiding so much more under the surface.

News:: Retired at 24: The life of a pro 'Call of Duty' player

Matthew "Burns" Potthoff retired when he was 24. He'd spent 11 years building a career as a professional Call of Duty player, and when he realized his time in front of the screen was up, he made a graceful transition into eSports management. Today, he's 26 and he works behind the scenes with eUnited, a North American eSports squad with teams across Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Gears of War, Smite and PUBG.

Potthoff's story sounds more suited to someone in their 50s or 60s -- traditionally, retirement is something that happens after decades of work in a chosen field. However, eSports is a new, rapidly evolving industry largely staffed by young people with big dreams. Potthoff's career mirrors eSports' recent rise to mainstream fame, but it also serves as a cautionary tale for new players, many of whom are diving into the scene straight out of high school -- or even before.

News:: Kickstarter for Angry Joe's Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game pops over $400,000 in one day

Last week we reported on a new tabletop game, based on the Street Fighter series, being developed by YouTube personality Angry Joe (Joe Vargas). Yesterday, Vargas opened the game's Kickstarter page, and immediately saw phenomenal success.

Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game had an initial goal of $285,000. As of this writing, the project has passed the $400,000 mark. That's pushing half a million buckeroos in around 24 hours. To be fair the prototype for the game, which features sculptured miniatures of classic Street Fighter characters, is looking really neat, so it figures people would jump on the project in the excitement.

The game is for two to six players and will feature multiple modes of play. Various expansions are already planned for future release, all based on the mainline Street Fighter titles. Vargas has really hit this one out of the park in terms of presenting a clear idea of what his game will be. The Kickstarter page features tons of images and videos, as well as a downloadable rule book, which have all clearly helped inspire confidence in the people and their wallets.

Currently, a pledge of $80 gets you the starter set, while $120 will also nab you the boss expansion pack. A commitment of $280 secures all of the above, plus future expansion packs. It's important to note the high possibility that the game may never hit the high street shelves, and will be made for Kickstarter backers only. Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game is fully funded and is scheduled to release in March 2019.

News:: Breakforcist Battle is an exorcist themed Breakout game coming exclusively to Switch

My eyes decieved me! At first glance I thought this was a sort of take on Puyo Puyo or any number of other drop-based puzzle games, but Breakforcist Battle is actually an homage to the old school Breakout style.

Coming exclusively to Switch developer Lucid Sheep Games is theming Breakforcist Battle around a cute exorcist motif, which will feature two player co-op or four players via a competitive mode. Characters seem to have special abilities and the entire theme is, as you may have guessed, taking place during breakfast.

Capcom have released a delightful new trailer to celebrate the start of the Spring Blossom Fest event, which is now live in their juggernaut adventure title Monster Hunter: World.

The event, which runs until April 19, adds a vast array of fun stuff to the best-selling Capcom game of all time (never let them forget). New challenges and grinds have been added to the game, alongside seasonal armour and items.

There are new cosmetics like dances, food items, Palico costumes and even firework displays. Everything you need to celebrate the passing of the longest damn Winter ever.

News:: There's a demo version of Detective Pikachu out right now and progress transfers over to the full game

Detective Pikachu was generally my cup of coffee despite its easy going difficulty curve, it just happened to squander a bit of its potential -- mostly in terms of the ongoing narrative.

You can see if it's your cup though by way of a demo version, which runs through the initial tutorial mission that helps you acclimate to both the clue hunting aspect of the game and Detective Pikachu's personality. It's available on 3DS right now, and the best part? Nintendo has confirmed that if you buy the full game your progress will transfer (it's only around 30-45 minutes depending on how much you linger, but it's nice to not have to do it again).

From now through April 22 you'll get a download code for a Detective Pikachu theme if you pick the game -- Nintendo says to look at retail packages for the code or grab it on the eShop until that date. Although I was disappointed a bit there's still a lot to love, so maybe you'll dig it!

News:: Cliff Blezsinski's 'LawBreakers' is in a death spiral

LawBreakers, the gravity-defying shooter from Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski, is on borrowed time. The game has never had a huge player-base, even after doling out new game modes and offering up free-play weekends. Developer Boss Key took to its blog to say as much. "The fact is LawBreakers failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner we had originally planned," the post reads.

News:: Review: A Quiet Place

For the entire night after I saw A Quiet Place I thought every sound was too loud. I put something down and the noise it made stood out to me. Each footstep seemed to fall heavier than it should have. Opening a door was a creaking disaster in staying silent. I know I wasn't the only one feeling this either. I've never left a movie theater with the crowd whispering like they might be killed if they spoke any louder.

A Quiet Place is the best kind of horror. The kind that sticks with you past the jump scare. That makes you think beyond the blood. The kind that builds tension over horror, and then delivers both perfectly.

It may also convince you to never have children.

News:: 'Spyro the Dragon Remastered' for Switch briefly shows up on Nintendo's UK store

Although we had the long-awaited confirmation of Spyro Reignited Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One yesterday, the Nintendo Switch was conspicuous by its absence. However, single eyebrows have been raised, akin to Spyro's goofy face on the game's packaging, thanks to a mysterious listing.

Nintendo's official UK store threw up a page for "Spyro the Dragon Remastered" for Nintendo Switch, complete with blurb and a £40 price-tag. As quickly as it had appeared, it was ghost, but not before canny folk were able to grab a quick snapshot of it.

While this could just be an innocent mistake, it's pretty coincidental that not only did that have a placeholder page, complete with blurb, good to go, but that it went up the same day as the game's official announcement. Spyro Reignited is also being handled by Toys for Bob, the same company who developed Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for Nintendo.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. In the meantime, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is available for pre-order on PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: The C64 Mini review: Nostalgia’s not enough

Memory's a weird thing, isn't it? Your brain records every moment in your life, and locks it away forever. And then, suddenly, a sound, a smell, a piece of beige plastic can just send you tumbling back in time to a different time. Sat on the floor of my office, unboxing the C64 Mini, I wasn't 33 any more, but eight, and sat at the blue formica table in the corner of my bedroom. In front of me, a hand-me-down Commodore from my neighbor, an engineer who taught himself BASIC in his semi-retirement. He chain-smoked cigars and was never without a tin of stout in his hand, smells that permeated the skin of this computer, never to be washed away.

It's these pangs of nostalgia that British company Retro Games Ltd. is looking to take advantage of to sell a "mini" version of the Commodore 64. For the uninitiated, the microcomputer was the computer of the '80s, and the first machine that many folks ever got their hands on. Even in Britain, which had been the crucible of the Sinclair vs. Acorn battle, Commodore holds a special place in millions of hearts.

My own Commodore 64 was hooked up to a 10-inch, black-and-white portable TV with a bent aerial. White-out was painted on to mark the tuning locations for BBC 1, BBC 2 and ITV, and I vividly remember playing (Pac-Man knockoff) Radar Ratrace, purely because I had the cartridge, which loaded faster than games on cassette. I used that battered, beige machine for so long on that TV that, when I finished unboxing and turned the C64 Mini on, I was actually surprised to see it output video in color.

News:: New My Nintendo rewards include new strategy guides

My Nintendo has mostly been a disappointment (literally all they need to do is add in Switch rewards right now to give it a sign of life), but it does swap out rewards occasionally and some people might be interested in those rewards, so I keep you all updated as often as I can.

This new rotation involves 30% off Super C on Wii U or 3DS for 50 Platinum points, or 20% off F-Zero Maximum Velocity GBA on Wii U for 30 Platinum. There's also a Breath of the Wild 3DS theme (20 Gold), 30% off Kirby's Blowout Blast (20), 40% Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. 3DS (80) and 40% off Mario Galaxy (80).

Finally, guidebooks are in the house in the first of mini or starter guides for Breath of the Wild, Metroid: Samus Returns, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and Mario Odyssey. All of them go for 10 Gold.
