News::Indies are the key to console gaming's future
The console market has become something of a paradox these past few years. Despite total console sales having exceeded 40 million units over the previous generation, and despite a wealth of powerful new IPs, we've witnessed a veritable avalanche of studio closures and cutbacks. The biggest reason for these failings is the current state of traditional games development, which has grown so bloated and inefficient that even historically successful brands can't meet publishers' outrageous sales projections.
One possible countermeasure is a greater focus on digital distribution, although this would require companies to make radical changes to their infrastructure -- hardly an overnight process. But while the bigger publishers are busy splitting resources, trying to address the physical and digital spaces simultaneously, smaller independent developers will be able to quickly capitalize on this relatively new frontier.
Both Sony and Nintendo have recognized the success of indies on the PC and have taken great strides to make their consoles and handhelds as indie-friendly as possible. Indies possess a pioneering spirit that once drove the entire industry, and since they aren't beholden to any panel of investors, they can take the risks that the big boys are too afraid to attempt.
As the major companies fall further out of touch with consumers, indies will be the ones to reinvigorate the market and shape the future of console gaming.

News::PS4 will get DC Universe Online and PlanetSide 2
Sony Online Entertainment will be represented on the PlayStation 4 with the likes of PlanetSide 2 and DC Universe Online .
"DCUO was the first MMO available for PlayStation 3, and its thriving community is proof that we can create an exciting and robust console experience for players," said SOE senior VP of global sales and marketing Laura Naviaux. "Players have been asking for PlanetSide 2 to be playable on consoles, and PS4 is the ideal platform to showcase the game's beauty, depth and frenetic open world combat."
The massively-multiplayer free-to-play shooter and role-playing game, respectively, haven't been given anything in the way of a release window, but this should be reassuring news, particularly for fans of the latter title. As Steven mentioned when reporting on the PS4 version of Warframe , it is good to see the console embrace free-to-play gaming in this way.

News::Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs delayed until the summer
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs will be delayed past its previous Q2 release date, developer Frictional has announced.
“We know we will not make Q2, we also know when the game will be ready for launch. We have not set the exact day yet,” said Frictional co-founder Jens Nilsson on the Frictional forums. “You can however make good use of the weather outside this summer and look forward to gaming with the piggies as the summer comes to an end.”
Nilsson stated that the delay was due to a large amount of polishing from his team and Dear Esther developer The Chinese Room, including a large amount of translations and platform porting.

News::Review: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
I didn't know what to expect before playing The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. I've seen the movie, but I don't remember much from it other than Wolverine fighting a lot of monsters. Luckily, that basic knowledge was all I really needed in order to understand what was happening in Van Helsing.
I believe the now common term to describe this genre is an Action RPG (ARPG), or in other words a "Diablo-like." These days ARPGs are fairly common: the divisive Diablo III, the mod-friendly Torchlight II, the free-to-play Path of Exile, and the upcoming Grim Dawn are all possible alternatives, so entering into the genre isn't exactly filling an empty void. Van Helsing definitely sticks to some of the core elements players have come to expect from an ARPG, and at least tries to spice things up along the way, even if it isn't successful.

News::Push the buttons: Project X Zone demo is up
If you've been itching to put the SEGA X Capcom X Namco Bandai strategy RPG extravaganza, Project X Zone , through its paces, you finally get your chance today. "Demo A" -- a combat scenario with the teams of Ryu & Ken (Street Fighter), Ichiro & Sakura (Sakura Wars), Gemini & Erica (Sakura Wars again), Kurt & Riela (Valkyria Chronicles), Soma & Alisa (God Eater), and Kite & BlackRose (.hack) -- has appeared on the 3DS eShop. Just beware the five-use limit, those stingy bastards...
Having only caught the odd gameplay clip here and there, I possessed but a vague idea of how the action would feel in my hands. And to be honest, it felt kinda blah. You move your characters around the map in turn, enter a one-sided battle against an opponent, then hammer different button combos to execute a succession of flashy attacks that don't appear to be significantly more effective at dealing damage than the last. Rinse and repeat.
The last Japanese strategy RPG I played was the original Disgaea, but I seem to recall there being slightly more actual strategy to combat back then. After campaigning to get this game out West, I would hate for it to end up being as dull as this boring-ass demo.
The full Project X Zone launches in the US on June 25 and in Europe on July 5.

News::Donatello does machines in TMNT: Out of the Shadows
After giving Mikey and Raph a moment in the spotlight, Donnie comes out to strut his stuff in the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows trailer.
A character trait that usually gets glossed over in Ninja Turtle games is Donatello's world-class skills as an inventor. In the TV shows, he's always building some weird gizmo that will aid the team in battle... or will hilariously backfire and become just as big a threat as whatever enemy they're squaring off against that week. Yet when it comes to the games, Donnie is just a muscle-bound goon like everyone else.
But according to the latest press release for Out of the Shadows, Donatello can build weapon upgrades unique to each of his brothers. For example, he builds himself a Gravity Gauntlet, which allows him keep his enemies airborne longer than physically possible. He'll also be able to hack computers and security systems, which implies that there will be multiple potential approaches to certain battles.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows hits PC, PS3, and 360 soon. We'll be able to get some hands-on time with the game at E3, so look out for that.

News::Two Tribes is holding a Toki Tori 2 Miiverse contest
Two Tribes is holding a rather unique contest for Toki Tori 2 , challenging gamers to draw Miiverse illustrations for a chance to have your drawing appear in-game. All you have to do is go to the Toki Tori 2 community, adhere to the weekly topic, and reply to your own drawing with the phrase "#contest." If you're selected as one of the four winners, your entry will appear as a "hidden cave drawing" by way of an update.
The developer will be updating their site constantly with weekly top 10 entries, if you're so inclined to check them out.

The XBLA version of Spelunky will be coming to PC, developer Mossmouth announced today.
Spelunky was originally released as a free game in 2009 with pixelated graphics and a small amount of levels. Last year, an updated version was released for XBLA, with cartoon-style graphics and a slew of new items, levels, and characters.

News::Celebrate: Spelunky headed to PC this summer
Spelunky is one of those games that I want to see on as many platforms as possible -- it's that freaking good. Everyone deserves the opportunity to play it. In addition to the upcoming PlayStation 3 and PS Vita ports, the title will now return to the place where it all started with a PC release on GOG.com and Steam later this summer.
The classic freeware version of Spelunky was and still is worth playing on PC, but the revamped, once-exclusive Xbox Live Arcade reboot is where it's at if you're looking for some of the best cooperative play of the past decade. Thankfully, it shouldn't be much more of a wait.

News::Neat adapter allows GameCube controller use on the Wii U
If you're a fan of the GameCube controller and lament the lack of love on the Wii U, it appears as if this adapter is your answer. It appears as if this unofficial piece of hardware will allow you to utilize compatibility options with all Wii U games supported by Wii Classic Controllers and the Wii Classic Controller Pro, as well as customization for the A, B, X, Y, L and R buttons. Keep in mind that does not include Wii-mote or GamePad enabled games.
I've used adapters like these for years, such as a PlayStation to Xbox/Xbox 360 adapter for platformers, and so on. I really enjoy the ability to play games with any control method -- something the PC comes in handy for. Keep in mind that at least one Amazon product review notes that while it does work with WaveBirds, it drains the battery pretty quickly.
