News:: Capcom is bringing Monster Hunter XX to Nintendo Switch

It may not be your exact "Monster Hunter on Nintendo Switch" dream scenario, but Capcom is heading in that general direction. The company has announced Monster Hunter XX for Switch in Japan.

There's a preliminary website for the Switch version right here (XX is currently available on 3DS), with more details yet to come on Saturday, May 27 at the Monster Hunter Championship 2017.

This is going to sell ridiculously well, isn't it? Like, I'm no Monster Hunter fiend, but I'm going to have a hard time passing this up as someone who loves their Switch (and didn't play Generations). The two were made for each other. Now let's just hope the inevitable localization isn't too far off.

News:: Darkest Dungeon's Crimson Court expansion is out June 19

Darkest Dungeon. Crimson Court. Gosh I love that short, sweet alliteration.

The Crimson Court is the first expansion for Red Hook Studios' "absolutely merciless" roguelike dungeon-crawling RPG, and it's nearly ready for Windows, Mac, and Linux players. It's out on June 19, priced at $10, and will be followed by a PlayStation Network release likely the following month.

There's a good reason for that staggered launch. "Inevitable issues result from releasing to a wide audience, and we want to make sure our console build benefits from the hotfixes we'll be pushing to Steam as issues are discovered," explains Red Hook. "(It's a longer process to release hotfixes on PSN.)"

News:: Review: Vanquish (PC)

Platinum might be a universally loved company, but not all of their games are. This is especially evident in the studio's era of licensed projects, with Korra operating as their most polarizing game to date, alongside of the somewhat contentious TMNT and Transformers jaunts.

Vanquish isn't their top effort, but it'll go down as one of the high notes in the saga of Platinum.

News:: Relive Ash Ketchum's first adventure at Japan Expo '17

If you're planning on attending this year's Japan Expo in France, then you can look forward to a special treat. It turns out that Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, the film that's an alternate retelling of Satoshi/Ash's Indigo League journey, will appear at the event before its July 15 premiere in Japan.

Other than that, people will get to meet Rica Matsumoto (Kamen Rider Ryuki and the Pokémon anime's first opening) and Kunihiko Yuyama (Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! and Pokémon: The First Movie's Director) at Japan Expo. Since Pikachu will join them, I assume that it's a person in a costume of the electric rodent, instead of Ikue Otani (Pokémon's Pikachu, the Corpse Party series' Sachiko).

While I fell out of the Pokémon anime during the Johto episodes, I'm still down with seeing the show's earlier arcs in higher quality animation. Hopefully, the movie's Sun and Moon elements won't hold it back. Then again, Mega Charizard X's appearance in Pokémon Origins was nice, so we might be in for a wonderful surprise.

Japan Expo '17 will run from July 6 through 9, which means that people have enough time to plan their trip to this event.

News:: Comments of the Week: Reboot - Pilot

Directed by Ridley Scott

Ladies and gentlebeings! Welcome to Comments of the Week presented by yours truly, FakePlasticTree. This is our attempt at rebooting a beloved feature blog series that we as a community hold very dear. Now, calling it a "reboot" might be a bit premature as it will more or less play on similar notes as you're used to seeing, i.e. it will take place in the same universe as Dreamweaver and Fuzunga's works. Some might refer to it as the Stranger Things type of creation, where it pays homage to its inspirations without doing anything overly new and exciting. Hopefully it will be a welcomed and worthy successor to what came before. If you get too tired of me, then worry not, as this time we are planning on passing the torch around to keep things fresh and exciting like we're all a respective season of Doctor Who.

News:: Overwatch gets free weekend event as GOTY and standard editions go on sale

If you didn't hear the news, Overwatch turned one this week, and with that, a barrage of promotions are accompanying its various new skins and maps.

Starting on Friday, May 26 at 11am Pacific and running through Monday, May 29 until just before midnight, you'll be able to try Overwatch for free on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Blizzard has also introduced Overwatch: Game of the Year Edition -- in essence replacing its Origins Edition -- and brought discounts.

Unsurprisingly, Overwatch: GOTY Edition is priced at $60 and gets a big cut down to $39.99 (33% off), while the standard edition gets a smaller price cut from $40 to $30 (25% off). Interestingly enough, the discount on GOTY for PS4 and Xbox One will require Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus to get the maximum price cut, whereas PC pals can just pick up the game at its lowered price on Battle.net or at GameStop (same Battle.net key).

Overwatch Anniversary Deals

Sales listed above last through June 5, so you'll have plenty of time to mull on picking up a copy if you enjoy your time with the game during the free weekend.

News:: Don't expect to see Beyond Good & Evil 2 at E3

Where do you go to hear the latest word on Beyond Good & Evil 2? Why, Michel Ancel's Instagram account, of course! And hey, while you're there, check out his other game, Wild, and this cool snail.

The designer was casually asked about the project on Instagram, at which point he even more casually responded to the inquiry with "Mhhh, not sure that E3 would be the best place to showcase [Beyond Good & Evil 2] but we're working on the game so sometime this year, you should hear about it!"

I'm calling it now: holding BG&E2 in yours hands is going to feel the same as The Last Guardian.

News:: Battle royale game The Culling heads to Xbox One next week

Intentional timing or otherwise, it seems The Culling is poised to catch some of that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds buzz with a soon-to-be-released Xbox One port. First released last year on Steam Early Access (where it still resides), the game pits 16 conniving players against each other with guns, melee weapons, and traps in the currently hot-as-heck kill-or-be-killed battle royale format.

The Culling will be out on Xbox One next Friday, June 2 through the Xbox Game Preview program.

I haven't kept up to date with it in recent months, but the general sentiment for the PC version appears to be that overzealous changes have turned a promising concept into something many fans just can't get along with, causing them to move on to the next thing, seemingly Battlegrounds, en masse.

With the console version of The Culling reaching a new audience, hopefully Xaviant will have the chance to regain lost ground. You can't sustain a game like this without dedicated, engaged players.

News:: Vega's Street Fighter II stage, Ed, and balance update coming to Street Fighter V next week

Street Fighter V is going through some major changes. On May 30th, the title will receive a long awaited balance patch, an improved Capcom Fighters Network (improving things like match load times), new fighter Ed, and a remastered version of Vega's Spain stage from Street Fighter II.

Vega's Spain stage (which Vega players can climb) will run you $3.99 USD, or 70,000 in Fight Money, and psycho boxer Ed is $5.99 USD or 100,000 in Fight Money. Additionally, if you sign into the Capcom Fighters Network between May 30 and June 13, you'll net 50,000 in Fight Money. Finally, the update will include weekly target updates for those who purchased the 2017 CPT Premier Pass.

Check out the Capcom-Unity post for full details.

News:: ‘Titanfall 2’ gets its first new mech

Titanfall 2 was one of last year's most hotly-anticipated --and well-received -- titles and the team behind it has kept its multiplayer scene alive with several free DLC releases. While the playerbase has dwindled, the next gratis content addition, Monarch Reigns, might lure enough back to revive the game when it drops on May 30th. At long last players will get a seventh titan, the first new battle mech added to the game since its launch.

News:: Yoot Saito is teasing a new Seaman project

Seaman might be returning. Can they -- can they do that?

Yoot Saito, the creator of the oddball Dreamcast game about talking to and raising a human-faced fish, seems to be putting the early word out there, but there isn't much of anything to show yet.

We last heard from Saito at BitSummit 2016, where he revealed his intention to get back into games, possibly with a spiritual successor. He also said "The risk takers are always... Sexy. I love them."

For now, aside from this tweet and an earlier one shared on May 22, there's only a simple "Under Construction" website. I have to imagine this is all building up to an inevitable Kickstarter campaign.

I'm also reminded that we never got Seaman 3DS, dang it all.

News:: Early Access Review: Dead Cells

You've probably played parts of Dead Cells before. Its DNA is familiar, a patchwork assembly of recognizable influences. There are echoes of Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid in the 2D action platformer. Rogue Legacy's persistent unlocks across randomized runs reinforce Dead Cells' core gameplay. Even Bloodborne, with its hurried melee strikes and rallying health regeneration, informs its fast-paced combat.

It'd be easy to look at the borrowed bits and reworked ideas mentioned above and write Dead Cells off as a weird Frankenstein's monster title, full of copied mechanics and gameplay systems. On paper, it sure reads like that. But to play Dead Cells and see how its pieces come together; to feel how it adopts elements and twists them together to create something different, is to experience a vision of excellence. It looks great and plays even better. It's an electric mix of polish and challenge that's all the more impressive considering the metroidvania/rogue-lite/whatever we're calling them these days only just released on Early Access.

News:: So, is Xbox Game Pass the Netflix of video games?

For years now, video game entrepreneurs have tried to create something that is the "Netflix for video games." In June 2010, OnLive launched and aimed to remove the barrier of needing a high-end PC to play many PC games. In January 2014, Sony tried PlayStation Now, a Netflix-like subscription model for PlayStation titles. In August 2014, EA tried something similar to Sony in creating a library of its older games for a service called EA Access.

All of them failed to some degree, at least in their pursuits to be like Netflix. OnLive never really caught on, mostly because streaming technology wasn't yet good enough to simulate the local experience. PlayStation Now is still around, but crucially still hasn't added PlayStation 4 games to its offerings. This combined with the fact that it's also a streaming service means that it's still not ideal; Netflix streams video, but this model adapted to video games is going to need local downloads. EA Access has gotten the closest but is hamstrung because it only has games from a single publisher.

There's a new King of the Closest. Xbox Game Pass is nearest the spirit of "Netflix for video games" but it's still not there in a way that makes me think nothing will ever get there because of a fundamental difference between how we consume video and video games.

Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft's newest games service that has 100+ available titles from both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. (By my count, there are 112 right now, but some games might be added or subtracted each month.) The service costs $10 per month / $120 per year to long-term rent all of these titles. You can download all of them onto your Xbox One and play them whenever as long as you're still a subscriber. If your subscription lapses, you lose the access to the games but not your progress from playing.

News:: Call of Duty: Black Ops III's DLC will be going free on PC for a month

If you're somehow still playing Call of Duty: Black Ops III, then you'll be happy to know that next month, all of the DLC packs will be going free for a trial period on PC. The trial period will begin next Tuesday, May 30 at 6 pm BST/1 pm EST and last until June 28.

If you already have the season pass, then you're not totally out of luck. Treyarch has stated that all current owners of DLC will get a 2X XP bonus for the entire month, meaning you'll be able to prestige a few times without much effort. The trial will be downloaded automatically to anyone who has the game installed, but you can opt out if you really don't want extra files on your PC.

You can read the full post by Treyarch here and see some of their cringe worthy humor about "doing it" with other people. It at least contains instructions for opting out of the trial if you so wish.

News:: NBA Playgrounds' first major patch fundamentally changes how shooting works

In our positive review of NBA Playgrounds, we pointed out that it's an enjoyable game but that it's enjoyable despite of a glut of problems. Probably the most concerning dealt with shooting the rock. Players have unique shooting animations and NBA Playgrounds asks that you release the shoot button at the right moment while never really knowing when that right moment is. It leads to a weird disconnect where NBA legends blow simple layups and dunks.

Developer Saber Interactive has spent the past few weeks getting buried by an avalanche of feedback, as players weren't quite happy with a lot of the intricacies that NBA Playgrounds shipped with. In the past few days, a patch released that addresses a lot of these issues. (It's out on PC; PS4, Xbox One, and Switch are coming as soon as they pass certification on their respective platforms.)

The biggest gameplay alteration focuses on how the shooting works. Now, there's a shooting meter with red and green sections that indicates when to release the ball. Finally, players have some feedback as to why their shot didn't go in. Before, the game would simply say "Early" or "Late" even if you felt like it was just as well-timed as the shot that went in the last time up the court.

Here's a player-made video that shows off the new system:

News:: Everyone's favorite useless Pokemon gets its own game

It's pretty obvious that Pokémon Go wouldn't have been the worldwide success without, well, Pokemon. Niantic and Nintendo tapped a phenomenally rich vein of wish fulfillment when they sent people scurrying around the real world catching monsters on their phone. The app was sadly limited to collecting, not raising the fighting beasts as the original game/manga/anime/feature films showcased. But a smartphone game has come out promising that elusive trainer experience with the greatest Pokémon of them all. Give a warm welcome to Magikarp Jump.

News:: Review: Perception

A first-person story-driven horror game with a strong blind female protagonist made by former developers of games like BioShock and Dead Space has got to be good, right? Plus, it has all the workings of a game someone, like myself, who is repeatedly called a "SJW" (Sexy Jed Whitaker, I think?) would like: disability, representation, and a compelling narrative.

Turns out diversity doesn't automatically mean a game gets a positive review. Who knew?

News:: Fallout 4 is going free for the weekend on Xbox One and Steam

Let's get right to it: Fallout 4 will be free to play on Xbox One (with Xbox Live Gold) and Steam this weekend. If you're anything like me, you probably have thoughts about that and the game at large.

For my part, I ultimately couldn't learn to love it despite my best efforts, and that still stings to this day. I found Fallout 4 enjoyable at first, if rough around the edges (so, par for the course). But the more time and energy I put into it, the more disappointed I grew. I couldn't stop thinking about what could have been given the years-long wait and new console generation separating it and Fallout: New Vegas.

All that said, if you can mess around in the Commonwealth for free and get the heck out before it's too late, no strings attached, I say go for it. That actually sounds pretty nice. The trial period times are:

  • Xbox One: May 25 at 12:01am PT through May 28 at 11:59pm PT
  • Steam: May 25 at 10:00am PT through May 28 at 1:00pm PT

If you have no interest in this whatsoever, Overwatch is also holding a free weekend event.

News:: Microsoft’s Twitch competitor gets a new name and co-op streaming

While Twitch has been busy expanding the breadth of what you can watch on its platform, Microsoft has been quietly improving how you watch and broadcast with its Beam service. Just to get it out of the way, Beam will henceforth be known as "Mixer." There's a PR-speak reason for the change in nomenclature, but it doesn't really matter. What does is how the service is improving. Specifically, Mixer now offers co-operative streaming and broadcasts in 4K UHD.

News:: Nintendo Download: Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

The Switch keeps up its momentum this week with Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers -- as a Switch exclusive it's a pretty big get, though Capcom notes that it could come to other platforms eventually. Disgaea 5 Complete is also out, and a pretty decent option if you never played the original. Quick note: Rime is out on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but the Switch version that's being handled by a different studio still doesn't have a set in stone release date. Astro Duel Deluxe and King of Fighters 99 are Switch bound this week too.

On Wii U you'll be able to snatch The Girl and the Robot, as well as Block Zombies. The 3DS is just getting Drone Fight.

News:: Here it is: Vanquish on Steam

One of Platinum's most beloved titles just made its PC debut. 2010's Vanquish just released on Steam mere minutes ago. We'll wait for those who need to leave to go queue up the download.

Vanquish's Steam page lists the port at $20. There are some notable features that PC players will be pleased with. Both resolutions and framerates are unlocked, meaning that people can push those as far as their rigs will let them. Also, there's full mouse and keyboard support (and mouse input is raw and without acceleration).

Other features and options listed on Vanquish's page are: anti-aliasing; anisotropic filtering; SSAO lighting; scalable texture and shadow quality; post-processing effects; and EFIGS and Japanese support for voice-overs, subtitles, and menus.

So far, 2017 has come up all roses for Platinum. Nier: Automata is a game of the year candidate, and Bayonetta and Vanquish have gotten their highly-requested PC ports. Well, mostly roses -- there was that whole Scalebound cancellation that probably didn't sit too well. But that aside, things are looking up.

News:: Alienware Aurora gaming desktop starts at $733 during Memorial Day sale

Earlier this week we talked about various Dell (and Alienware) laptop deals on tap for Memorial Day. Today, we're spotting some actual decent pricing on Alienware's Aurora premium gaming desktop.

Typically, we see these machines priced far above the $1,000 mark but as of writing there are two models well below the $900 price point. In fact, the cheapest Alienware Aurora now starts at $733 after instant savings plus coupon. While you're definitely still paying a premium compared to building your own rig, these three deals are a far cry from their usual price tag (with the Core i7 variant having a list price of $1,550).

Alienware Aurora Desktop Deals

Use code: 50OFF699

Above, you'll find three models, all with the Aurora chassis that's tool-less accessible and comes with those AlienFX lighting zones with 20 different colors. Which, depending on who you ask, are either pretty cool or an unnecessary drain on the wallet. All models come with the latest Intel 7th Gen Kaby Lake processor, with the two sub-$900 model equipped with a Quad Core i5-7400 (a CPU priced around $190). The base model comes with a Radeon RX 560, which is just a rebranded Radeon RX 480 that's slightly higher clocked (currently priced at about $110). This model comes in at $733 and is essentially a VR-ready gaming rig for a decent price.

Throw in another $100 and you'll step up from the RX 560 2GB GPU to a configuration with a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of RAM (priced around $230 to $250). By all accounts, we think this is the model to go with given you'll get far better performance in high-resolution gaming and will be able to run games at higher settings.

Finally, the priciest deal above is the Core i7-7700 model (a $300 CPU) that comes with a spiffy GTX 1070 8GB, which can run almost all games currently on the market at high/max settings -- unsurprising, given that it's a ~$350 CPU. This configuration clocks in at $1,175 and comes with 16GB of RAM and a 2TB HDD (though honestly, you should price in an SSD for better performance).

For the sake of comparison, we priced out a similar config and come up with a similar street price of about $1,193 before rebate -- so the deal on the Alienware Aurora Core i7 with GTX 1070 is priced quite competitively all things considered, particularly since we went and picked cheaper parts when available.

Similar Config

  • Core i7-7700 - $294.99
  • Cryorig H7 cooler - $34.89
  • Gigabyte GA-Z270MX Micro ATX SLI mobo - $157.33
  • 2x8GB DDR4-2400 Memory - $105.99
  • Seagate Barracuda 2TB - $69.89
  • Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 - $349.99
  • Deepcool ATX Mid-Tower Case - $39.99
  • EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze PSU - $42.89
  • Windows 10 Home - $87
  • Total - $1,193.85

Let us know if the items we picked seem reasonable. We think it's safe to say that some of the items picked may be higher quality parts than what Dell will be tossing into the Aurora, while some are on par or worse (e.g., the case chassis is subjective). Most of the OEM savings are via the software where Dell probably gets Windows 10 for dirt cheap, whereas the average Joe will need to fork over about $80+ for a copy.

If you've been looking for an Alienware gaming desktop for cheap, we think these three deals are as good as it'll get until we hit holiday season 2017. If you're not into these rigs, well, feel free to add to the usual flame that accompanies any mention of Alienware machines.

News:: Review: RiME

Rime has been through hell.

Tequila Works initially pitched it to Microsoft, which didn't end up working out. Then they went to Sony with another exclusive offer, which did work out, until it didn't. Now they're back with a vengeance on four platforms (one of which is coming later this year), and it was mostly worth the wait.
