News:: First Look At The Cancelled Metallica Video Game In Action

Reminder: there was once a proper Metallica video game in development. It never got very far—all we ever saw was a short trailer and some excellent concept art—but recently some footage of the game in action has been uncovered.

News:: The Week In Games: Civilization And Its Battlefields

In the immortal words of Pat Benatar, “love is a battlefield, whoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhooooaaaa!” It’s something I’ll definitely be keeping in mind as I charge through the graveyards of nationalism on my gorgeous, Frostbite-rendered horse later this week. Come for the social commentary on a nearly century old slaughter that amounts to “war is hell” and stay for the the epic ponies.

News:: Daigo Uses Sixth Sense To Block Sonic Booms, Wins Tournament

Daigo Umehara is a legend when it comes to fighting games. Referred to sometimes as Daigo “The Beast” Umehara, the pro Street Fighter V player didn’t exactly need to win the European Regional Finals to qualify for Capcom’s Pro Tour. He would have gotten in on points alone. But that didn’t stop him from comfortably winning most of his matches and going on to take first place in the tournament at Milan Games Week.

News:: Game Boy Jam Shows Everything That Made The Handheld Special

The fifth annual Game Boy Jam just wrapped up last weekend after receiving over four hundreds of entries. The rules were simple: all assets had to be created during the jam, the screen resolution had to match the original Game Boy, and each game could only include up to four colors. You can currently find all of them hosted on Itch.io.

News:: Phil Spencer chimes in on why Xbox doesn't sell in Japan

You know how Japanese games have 'O' and 'X' swapped on PlayStation? For those not already aware, in Japan 'O' is the universal symbol of "correct" or "affirmative" whereas 'X' is the opposite, conveying a sense of "wrong" or "negative." Coming from America you can imagine how shocked I was upon seeing a bunch of red circles on my homework in my first year studying in Japan. Anyway, it's funny to see how fitting it is that Xbox doesn't do well in such a place, even though I'm not the first to point that out.

The X alone is not a real factor however. They aren't afraid of it like the Chinese are afraid of ghosts. Otherwise, Xenoblade Chronicles X wouldn't have sold. It's also not because Microsoft is a non-Japanese company; they have no issue buying foreign technology with the iPhone dominating the mobile market. Finally, it's not due to Xbox games being released on PC or anything having to do with PC, since PC gaming is such a small niche in the Japanese gaming world.

So with only three major consoles to choose from, and the above reasons having minimal to no effect, the reason the Xbox brand has abysmal sales in Japan (over 10 times less units moved in its debut than PS4 and Wii U) is confirmed by Phil Spencer: games.

News:: The game that makes drone warfare personal

Killbox is a game that creates humans out of brightly colored 3D shapes, only to slaughter them in the most dehumanizing way: a drone strike. And not just any drone strike -- the game is based on the first real-life UAV mission ever carried out in an unofficial warzone.

Killbox has a heavy-handed message delivered in a direct, uncompromising fashion. It's a two-player game; one person embodies a sphere in an simplistic yet idyllic farming landscape. This player cruises along pathways to collect tiny white motes that emit a pleasant sound whenever the 3D ball rolls over them. There are no instructions, but the objective is clear: Collect as many motes as possible. The sphere rolls along the flat green grass and down pathways lined with balls of soft white light, passing other bright beings that appear to be frolicking, playing and dancing around each other. Larger pear-shaped creatures wander around the area, changing colors with an adorable sound every time the player's tiny sphere runs into them.

This is what my life has been like recently the moment I turn on my Xbox One or make the mistake of signing in on the PC or mobile apps. Why?

Because I recently changed my Gamertag to just my first name "Jed" when Microsoft freed up a bunch of unused names earlier this year. I had been trying to get this name for literally years during the various purges of dormant tags, and finally, I got it. You should have been there. I was refreshing over and over all day and when I finally got through I put my hands in the air and cheered while in the middle of a crowded Buffalo Wild Wings. Little did I know that it would make my Xbox gaming experience a never-ending Minecraft invitation Hell.

There were three teams representing South Korea when the League of Legends World Championships began late last month. News:: Review: Battleborn: Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion

For a lot of people, Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion is going to be too little, too late. Battleborn has been plagued with issues since its launch, from poor PC performance to a rapidly decreasing base of players causing long wait times to get into a game. Season pass holders and cooperative-only players have good reason to be annoyed; it's taken five months since launch for this first piece of story downloadable content to release.

That said, anybody who stuck it out with Battleborn should be pleased with Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion. What's here is short and sweet, but it manages to be surprisingly replayable. For five bucks, it's an easy recommendation.

News:: Miyamoto came up with 'Donkey Kong' ideas in the bathtub

In an interview posted on Nintendo's Japanese website, Shigeru Miyamoto reminisced about the time he spent developing the classic arcade title Donkey Kong. According to Wired writer Chris Kohler, who translated the whole thing, Miyamoto dropped some previously unknown tidbits about the game in the interview. And yes, that includes the part about conjuring up ideas and getting them in order while in the company-owned housing's communal bath.
