News::Ridiculous Fishing headlines Humble Mobile Bundle 3

I previously said that I was a little disappointed with Humble Mobile Bundle 2, so my expectations for the future of Humble Bundle's Android spinoff have been tempered. Today, the Humble Mobile Bundle 3 was announced, and I am once again riding high on my new options for mobile gaming.

We heard just two days ago that Ridiculous Fishing would be available on Android "sooner than you think," and now it is here as one of the "pay more than the average" titles in the bundle. Though it is probably the star of the show, its backup is looking pretty great too. Rymdkapsel and SpellTower both look great and are part of the standard bundle, along with EPOCH and Swordigo . Joining Ridiculous Fishing for those who pay more than the average is Kingdom Rush .

Naturally, the bundle also includes soundtracks. Swordigo's and Rymdkapsel's soundtracks are available with the basic bundle, while Ridiculous Fishing's and Kingdom Rush's soundtracks can be downloaded by those who put up more money. And of course, while this bundle looks great now, it can only get better when the Humble people "surprise" us with more additions in a week.

News::XCOM: Enemy Within Review | GameRevolution

GR: Firaxis is back after over a year with their latest expansion, XCOM: Enemy Within, to last years strategy hit revitalization, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This time around, theyd like to know the answer to one simple question: Were your aspirations towards megalomania not megalomaniacal enough? (Also, if the enemy is within, can it still be unknown, and vice-versa?) Enemy Within introduces a new currency, Meld, which is introduced early on and used to enhance your soldiers even further than before. Meld allows commanders to perform sick, twisted experiments upgrade their soldiers by using inhumane genetic manipulation enhancements or by turning them into cyborg MECS, devoid of emotion or independent thought a brand new mechanized class of soldiers. Notably, one cannot make a genetically enhanced MEC, and creating a MEC wipes out all previously learned class abilities but not experience.

News::Smash Bros. mod Project M 3.0 gets one heck of a trailer

Project M is one of the most impressive mods I've ever seen and this trailer for the upcoming 3.0 release on December 9, 2013 serves as a terrific introduction. The talent and dedication of these people -- my goodness! It's simply remarkable.

While the PMBR hasn't come out with the full list of additions, expect new characters like Mewtwo and Samus, the crazy-sounding Turbo mode, alternate costumes including Dr. Mario, and new/revised stages. That's to say nothing of the countless tweaks to gameplay.

If this is all sounding new to you and you're more of a Super Smash Bros. Melee fan than Brawl, you've got some reading to do.

News::Kojima wants to play Knack with Mark Cerny

To accompany a bunch of straight PS4 gameplay for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Hideo Kojima sat down with the PlayStation Blog to talk about things like the less linear nature of Ground Zeroes, where the, "the player will put a story together." It's sounding almost Hitman-esque.

Kojima also explained why Metal Gear Solid V is two games, with Ground Zeroes acting as a prologue: "PS4 is launching now and it’s big. A lot of people have been asking for a new Metal Gear Solid experience, so we at least wanted to release a prologue so that people get to know what people will be, experience a chunk of the story."

He also talked about his pride in Ground Zeroes lighting -- the searchlights, in particular. "Twenty six years ago, I wanted to originally put this in the game: moving through searchlights without being spotted."

Oh, and he wants to play Knack with Mark Cerny. Me too, Kojima. Me too.

News::F2P Dragon's Dogma Quest coming to Vita December 19

Dragon's Dogma Quest was originally announced as a Vita game. Perhaps it isn't surprising that the free-to-play, 2D, online-only RPG ended up coming to iOS (in Japan) much sooner. Still, a Vita version is still in the works. According to Siliconera, it is coming December 19, though a Western release hasn't been announced.

Like Dragon's Dogma, Quest stars an unlucky son of a gun whose heart was stolen by a dragon. Let's call him "No Heart" Anthony. He proves that Dragonheart movie is a load and dragons won't give you their hearts, but would rather take yours.

The 2D art is actually rather nice, but given the free-to-play model, who knows if this will be any good. Hopefully this is a stopgap between a next gen sequel to the surprisingly beloved game. Or maybe it's the future, given that Deep Down is also free-to-play.

News::Review: Contrast (DarkZero)

"Even though this is a review of the PC version of Contrast, there is no doubt in my mind that the game has been inevitably put in the spotlight, thanks to its inclusion as a free game in Sonys PlayStation Plus for PlayStation 4. It probably wouldn't have been a big deal if it was originally planned to be featured, but when such a huge game as Drive Club is pulled out of the free games list, then a smaller game is obviously going to get some shifty looks as it tries to replace something that was, as the industry calls it, a AAA experience."

News::Sony expects to meet demand for PS4 through the holidays

Speaking to Game Informer, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House commented on the supply of PlayStation 4 for the holiday season. The console is launching in 32 territories by the end of this year, but he's confident in the company's ability to meet demand.

"[This is] the first platform launch that I've ever been involved with where we've had such a good production ramp up and a good sense of supply," he said. "I think that we will be in good supply in the countries that we've launched in.

"We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they've been loyal to brand for so long," House continued. "On the other hand, we're not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we'll be in good supply. The sales target that I announced for the company is five million units sold by the end of our fiscal year. March 31, 2014."

One million consoles units were sold within the first 24 hours of the PS4 being available in North America, for context. Something tells me that the markups on eBay and the like won't be as absurd as they were for the prior generation of consoles. Let's hope not. I'm having terrible flashbacks.

News::Review: Contrast Talking to Shadows | The Analog Shtick

Many of the PS4s launch titles have a very bright, and colorful look to them. Battlefield 4 and Killzone: Shadow Fall are both surprisingly vibrant when looked upon next to other titles of their genre, and Need for Speed: Rivals is similarly radiant. So it would seem that its up to Contrast to deliver a darker experience; both visually, and tonally. It definitely delivers the former, but falls short in the latter spectrum.

News::UK deal: Register a 3DS and game for free Mario 3D Land

Nintendo has a nice deal this holiday season for gamers in the United Kingdom. Register a 3DS or 3DS XL and a participating game between November 27 - January 13, and you'll receive a free copy of Super Mario 3D Land via eShop download.

Given the sheer quality of the applicable games, that shouldn't be too difficult to manage:

  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

  • Fire Emblem: Awakening

  • Luigi’s Mansion 2

  • LEGO CITY Undercover: The Chase Begins

  • Sonic Lost World

  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

  • Pokémon X

  • Pokémon Y

  • Bravely Default

  • New Super Mario Bros. 2

  • Mario Kart 7

  • Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

Super Mario 3D Land is a must-own for the system and, in my humble opinion, one of the first titles new 3DS owners should try out. That said, almost everything on this list is worth grabbing as well.
