News::Hardline 010: Haters gonna hate

On this week's Hardline, I strapped in with Hamza Aziz and Steven "Hatesen" Hansen for a candid discussion about the challenges of writing effective game previews and why these articles aren't always as in-depth as everyone would like them to be.

We were also treated to a surprise visit from Dale North, who was thought to be too sick to appear on the podcast but hopped on anyway out of nowhere. Love you!

From there, the conversation turned to all of the Persona franchise release announcements, composing game music, whether Naughty Dog should do a Last of Us sequel or a new IP, the PS4's Japanese launch, and the only debate worth having: Aladdin SNES vs. Genesis.

John Bedford (Eurogamer): It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since Garrett last prowled his way through a city of shadows, but 2014 finally sees the rebirth of a franchise that many assumed had slipped into shadowy obscurity for good. As well as making a return to its traditional PC home, this new and re-vitalised series has also sprung into action on the new generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, not to mention the old. As well as a decent sized campaign to work through, there are plenty of special collectible items to forage around for along the way. We've broken our walkthrough down into the individual chapters of the game, and we've ensured you'll grab all of those set items as you make your way through each stage of the campaign.

Well, this is awkward. Not only did Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 review fairly poorly across the board, now we're seeing former developers step into the light and call out Spanish development studio, MercurySteam, for poor management and an archaic, ego-driven internal culture.

In threads on NeoGAF, and on the fan forum Castlevania Dungeon, former developers talked openly about how constant changes and lack of communication led to employees coming into conflict with studio director Enric Alvarez and how many of the talent behind the game quit or were laid off throughout development.

News::VRFocus Preview: ZeldaVR

VRFocus - The Legend of Zelda is a videogame franchise which surely needs little introduction, and yet as time moves on we it could be argued that many have forgotten just where it all began. That 8-bit world was so unlike anything that had gone before a self-contained adventure that created many pillars of design which still stand even to this day which was so clean-cut that many aspiring developers still hold it in remarkably high esteem. One such developer is Randy Bennett, who operates under the name Ubiquitron, and has paid homage to the series by offering fans a very modern rebirth.
