News:: Adult Swim-backed run and gun Rise & Shine looks slick

Rise and shine: it's not just something I put off doing each and every morning. It's also a video game -- an eye-catching run-and-gun published by Adult Swim Games, in fact -- that's coming to PC and Xbox One on January 13, 2016. "Rise" is a child, and "Shine" is his gun. Hence, Rise & Shine.

This is "a true 'think and gun' that combines elements of arcade shooters, bullet hells, and puzzle platformers to create a new blend of strategy and viscera. Switch between Shine's add-ons to solve puzzles that redefine what bullets can do. Guide projectiles through intricate mazes, electrify damaged equipment to discover new pathways, and juggle 8-bit fruit because why not?"

The developers at Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team previously contributed to games like Plants vs. Zombies and Worms. This is the team's first PC and console release together.

For more on Rise & Shine, Jed has you covered with a hands-on preview from earlier this year. I'm not super enthusiastic about the referential humor and nods (Jed noted a Wreck-It-Ralph sensibility), but the side-scrolling shooter mechanics and intricate art direction have me sufficiently interested.

News:: Spectacular Minecraft build emulates the Atari 2600

We've shown you some impressive Minecraft projects before, but this one takes things to a whole new level. Minecraft has been great for people who want to look backwards at the history of video games. It's easy to go and build a sprite out of blocks, since they match up perfectly with the pixels all game characters used to be rendered with. YouTuber SethBling has gone several steps further though, creating a working Atari 2600 emulator in Minecraft's creative mode.

The emulator is an impressive technical feat that uses about 2000 command blocks and treats dirt blocks as zeroes, and stone as ones. It's not quite the same as pulling out your dad's old wood panel system and hooking it up, though; while an original Atari would render on a television at 60 frames per second, this one refreshes the screen 60 times in about four hours. There's also no way to control the games yet, so all you can do is watch their attract mode. You can, however, alter the values for the data the emulator renders by manually replacing dirt with stone, or vice versa.

Seth's included the ROM files for Space Invaders, Pac Man, and Donkey Kong. He says that any ROM that's 4 Kilobytes can be imported, though he cautions that larger or smaller ROMs may not work. The emulation isn't quite perfect, but the fact that it's running at all is extremely impressive. If you're interested, you can download the world to play around with the emulator yourself. There's also a more technical version of the video above, with more information on how the project came together.

Seth, if you're reading this, here's a new challenge for you: try and get the original Dragon Quest up and running in Dragon Quest Builders.

News:: The Resident Evil 7 demo is now on Xbox One

Even if you aren't all that keen on what you've seen of Resident Evil 7, Capcom's Beginning Hour demo is worth experiencing. It's been locked down on PlayStation 4, but as of today, it's now also available on Xbox One (and will soon be released on Steam). Queue that sucker up. It's only a few gigs.

I actually need to give it another go, for a few reasons. My first attempt at the most recent version of the demo ended with a certain something making quick work of me (I only had the axe, so... yeah). I managed several good swings but the on-edge sensation of playing in VR got the better of me.

I'd like to get at least one of the endings, even it's not the best one. But more importantly, there's also an item to earn -- the mysterious "Dirty Coin" -- that can be transferred to the full game. The process is a bit on the finicky side and you'll probably want to have gone through the demo already so you know the house's general layout, but here's a video walkthrough as well as a text-based guide.

News:: Prepare for pain, Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ gets a release date and trailer

I've been looking for an excuse to get back into the Binding of Isaac and it seems like that chance will soon be here. An update on the Binding of Isaac blog confirms that the next expansion, Afterbirth+, will be released on Steam on January 3. Console players will have to wait until spring 2017 to get be trampled and abused by the new expansion. A new trailer sets the tone perfectly. Yikes.

News:: Nintendo demos at Best Buy this weekend

Nintendo didn't have many new games this holiday season, but the company is doing what it can with what it's got. This Sunday, shoppers at Best Buy stores will have the opportunity to try out some demos for two of the major games Nintendo shipped last month: Pokémon Sun and Moon, and Paper Mario: Color Splash

The demonstrations will run on December 11 from 10AM to 1PM local time, and there's a list of participating locations at the official site. Pokémon Sun and Moon have been phenomenally successful, so I'm not sure they need the help. On the other hand, Paper Mario could probably use the boost, even though it's excellent. Wii U titles are few and far between these days.

News:: Majesco no longer makes games

After 20 years publishing video games, Majesco has officially bowed out of the industry. It's not disappearing entirely, though; it's just operating with an entirely new purpose.

As reported by Polygon, Majesco has merged with PolarityTE -- a biotech company that specializes in regenerative tissue technology. It seems as if Polarity will be a wholly-owned subsidiary of Majesco, but Majesco will drop its name and operate under the Polarity banner. The ownership and naming dynamic may be a little confusing, but one thing is certain: Majesco is squarely out of the entertainment business.

This news probably won't shock anyone who has followed Majesco's monetary situation over the past few years. Majesco had been in constant financial peril. Eventually, it shuttered Midnight City, its indie publishing division. In the middle of 2015, the last of Majesco's founding family left the company; David Rector, Majesco's new leader, made his fortune not in video games, but in gold mining and energy.

This year has been almost completely quiet for Majesco on the video game front. The final games it published both released in January -- console ports of Gone Home and A Boy and His Blob. It was, however, active on Twitter as recently as June with this weirdly enthusiastic endorsement of ABC's BattleBots:

News:: PC game flash sale brings $9 Mass Effect Trilogy and more goodies

Someone needs to send Green Man Gaming the memo that a Flash Sale is suppose to convey the message a sale is short and not long-lasting. I guess "Ongoing Sale" doesn't have the same punch.

Anyway, GMG has extended last week's "Flash Sales" with discounts on recent releases like 23% off Civilization VI and Battlefield 1 along with larger discounts on older titles like 82% off the Mass Effect Trilogy. At $8.99, even with all the potential missing DLC you're still getting a grand ol' adventure, particularly if you're new to PC gaming.

News:: Japanese indie games convention BitSummit still growing, set for 2017

When thinking about Japanese video game conventions, there's a certain monstrosity of a show that everyone defaults to. Tokyo Game Show is the one that everyone knows, but there's another that keeps steadily growing and making a name for itself.

That convention is Kyoto-based BitSummit, an annual showcase of Japanese indie games. Its organizers just announced plans for the fifth annual BitSummit. It'll take place on the weekend of May 20, 2017. For the fourth consecutive year, the Miyako Messe convention center will play host.

Somewhat quietly, BitSummit has become Japan's second largest annual gaming show. Attendance last year was around 6,000 -- hundreds of thousands fewer than Tokyo Game Show. It's also a lot less unwieldy and more comfortable than TGS. It's a convention where you can actually play games instead of standing in line all day. We attended in 2014 and were fascinated by all the indie gems that Japan's hiding.

News:: Call of Duty physical sales are down from last year

According to a report from CNBC, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare sold fewer physical copies than its predecessor, Black Ops III. This news comes as little surprise, considering the tepid critical and fan reaction to Infinite Warfare. Day-one impressions were primarily negative, with the conversation surrounding the game only getting worse since its release earlier last month.

Sales dropped almost 50% from last year, falling "17% shy of expectations," according to Doug Creutz, a gaming analyst from the Cowen Group. This was corroborated by a second, anonymous Wall Street source. "[According to the source,] November's NPD Call of Duty unit sales were down 51 year over year," writes CNBC's Tae Kim. Although this news comes from American sales data, the UK also saw a 48% sales drop.

The report comes from the privately released November 2016 NPD sales data, which tracks sell-through information; not copies shipped to stores, but rather copies purchased by consumers. However, NPD data does not currently track digital sales, so it's possible that people are finally beginning to embrace the all-digital future. After all, brick-and-mortar retailers are struggling. But if Call of Duty was so white-hot on the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores, you can bet Activision would've put that in a press release already.

The disappointing sales of Infinite Warfare, coupled with a drop in Activision stock, could motivate the company to give the series a break, à la Assassin's Creed. If next year's Call of Duty turns out to be really good, will that be enough to reverse the franchise's downward trend? I doubt it -- the most interesting part of this year's package was Modern Warfare Remastered, which probably doesn't bode well.

Activision did not return CNBC's requests for comment, so I doubt they'll get back to us either. We'll ask anyway, though.

News:: Ubisoft executives fined a combined $1.2 million for insider trading :(((

When news broke last month that five Ubisoft executives were accused of insider trading by a French stock market regulation committee, things didn't look bright for those men. They offloaded some of their shares of Ubisoft in the weeks before the publisher announced delays that caused its value to drop by 25 percent. It seemed like a cut-and-dry case, a textbook example.

Today, The Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) ruled on the matter and found all five executives guilty of insider trading. As reported by Kotaku, they were all hit with sanctions of varying amounts. Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallet was fined the most at €700,000. The others figures were €200,000 for Francis Baillet and Christine Burgess, €100,000 for Olivier Paris, and €15,000 for Damien Moret. In total, this is approximately $1.28 million. The AMF's decision can be found here, but it's only available in French.

Ubisoft isn't ready to wave the white flag yet. In a message to Kotaku, representatives confirm that the French publisher intends to appeal the AMF's findings. Here's Ubisoft's unabridged statement:

News:: XSEED's retail edition of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero looks nice

Following up on that digital release date news for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, publisher XSEED has finalized the game's physical launch on PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Wii U in North America. The Kickstarted platformer will cost $30 at retail and come with a 30-track CD, as pictured above.

Just like the multi-platform digital launch for Shantae, the PS4 and Vita retail editions will drop on December 20, 2016. On Wii U, it's going to take an extra week at retail, so that version will be out on December 27 (though the $20 Wii U eShop release will be right on time on Dec. 20). Got all of that?

I know WayForward has issued loads of backer updates, but now's the time to pay attention to those emails if you put any money into this project. Half-Genie Hero codes are in, although some of the platforms are time-stamped and you won't be able to redeem just yet (find pertinent details here).

"This is our biggest launch ever, and we've got our hands full! Our support lines will be very busy over the next few weeks, so when possible please make use of the WayForums, as your answer may already be there! Thanks for your patience, and for making this dream game a reality!!"

News:: Sora is coming to World of Final Fantasy as DLC

World of Final Fantasy is still trucking along enough for Square Enix to support it a few months down the line, and that includes their previously promised Sora DLC.

Yep, the Kingdom Hearts star will be making it in as a "Champion Summon" by way of DLC, and will debut in Japan on January 12. You have until March 31 to download him, and he'll be a free add-on for World. Although we don't have an exact date yet for a western release, it is confirmed at the very least, and it's likely that we'll see it within weeks of the eastern DLC launch.

After all, it is promoting Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, which is out at the start of the month for Japan and the end of it for every other region. I'm just glad Kingdom Hearts is still a thing.

News:: World-molding adventure Astroneer hits PC and Xbox One next week

A year ago, I was telling you about the cooperative sci-fi game Astroneer and its world-exploring, terrain-deforming ways. Next week, it'll be playable at last. The game will debut on PC in Steam Early Access and Xbox One in Game Preview form on Friday, December 16.

The main draw, at least for me, is messing up worlds, Red Faction-style. "On this adventure, a player's most useful tool is their ability to shape their world, altering the terrain and extracting valuable resources from planets, and moons. Resources can be traded or crafted into new tools, vehicles, and modules to create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases."

System Era Softworks says it's aiming for the Early Access run to take "a year or two." The goal is to make a game that lets players explore procedural planets, reshape said planets, build ships and industrial bases, and play online with friends and strangers. So, yes, it's another ambitious, work-in-progress space-exploration title. Based on this trailer, though, I'm liking the look of things.

News:: Five years later, do you still want Mega Man Legends 3?

Back in July of 2011, Capcom officially came out and said Mega Man Legends 3 was canceled. Fans rallied. People who hate the series said good riddance. It was a weird time, but since then I've seen so much love come out of that community that it makes me happy to say that I'm a part of it.

Five years later that love has extended to a GameSpark poll out of Japan, in which readers state that they want to see a revival of Mega Man Legends more than any other Capcom IP. When I've asked our readers the same question, a lot of you echo the same sentiment, alongside of another main entry Devil May Cry game from Capcom.

We may never get Legends 3, but Mega Man is making a low key comeback with the Legacy Collection, the appearance in Smash, and a brand new TV show that's set to air next year. If everything goes well we might see something like another retro iteration similar to 9 and 10, or we could just get more mobile trash. It's Capcom -- you never know.

News:: Conan and Terry Crews play Battlefield 1 and pet bunnies on Clueless Gamer

I don't make it a habit to see every single one of Conan O'Brien's Clueless Gamer segments -- some of them come across as too forced -- but with actor Terry Crews guesting on this Battlefield 1 segment, I had to watch. Had to! Crews is just so endearing and as he mentions in the intro, he built a gaming PC this year to get closer to his son (here's one of the many feel-good videos to come out of that project).

Conan had heard of Battlefield 1 before and was "genuinely excited" to try it, presumably given his interest in history. After going through the rather great opener in which you take control of numerous soldiers who inevitably succumb to the battle, Conan related the experience to a game he knows well.

"This is like a Pac-Man where after you eat the dot, they tell you when the dot was born. They show you a picture of the dot's mother, and then they tell you that the dot had a little child dot that it'll never see again. And then they play that sad music." The cure for sadness? A bunny break!

News:: Make your space fortune in 'Astroneer' on December 16th

If you felt a little let down by No Man's Sky, perhaps Astroneer can restore your faith in procedurally generated universes. System Era's space exploration game is finally nearing completion, and will be released on Steam Early Access, as well as Xbox One and Windows 10 Game Preview, on December 16th. The title actually has a lot in common with No Man's Sky, apart from the third-person viewpoint reminiscent of Lifeless Planet. You are an explorer out to make your fortune, but to do that you must hunt down the resources required to build vehicles, bases and conduct research needed first for survival, then for prosperity.

News:: Capcom hopes its return to horror with Resident Evil 7 will sell five million launch copies

So Square Enix is halfway there with its five million Final Fantasy XV sales worldwide (it wants 10 million), but Capcom is going for a much smaller (but still relatively AAA) target of four million with Resident Evil 7.

Yep, come January the publisher is hoping to clear four million copies worldwide on its first day, which marketing director Antoine Molant calls the "the biggest Capcom game we are releasing on new machines," speaking to MCV. Capcom is "confident" that they can push that much, and that pre-orders were "above expectations."

I'm still hoping the thing is actually good. All the vertical slices and early preview builds have done their job in wowing people, but seeing if it can actually carrying a tune through the entire campaign and not resort to boulder punching (I'd love to see some camp to be honest) remains to be seen.

News:: Wild Guns Reloaded confirmed for US and Europe, is getting physical

Wild Guns Reloaded is coming to Japan in the next few days, but the west is getting it too!

Natsume has confirmed to Destructoid that Reloaded is arriving on the PS4 on December 20 in both North America and Europe, digitally and physically. Wait what? Yep, the publisher is partnering up with three retailers (Amazon, Play-Asia, and Video Games Plus) to deliver a physical edition of Reloaded, which offer the North American edition. The other two outlets are selling it now, and Amazon's listing will go up on launch day.

If you haven't tried the original yet now is a good time, as the new iteration looks like an amazing co-op game, and has a few extra modes and characters to boot.

News:: Rockstar classic 'Bully' arrives on iOS and Android

Think of Rockstar and your mind probably jumps to the Grand Theft Auto franchise, or Red Dead Redemption. While excellent games, they've arguably overshadowed an oft-forgotten classic from the PlayStation 2 era: Bully. The adventures of Jimmy Hopkins at Bullworth Academy were charming and mischievous, blending pranks and favors with classroom mini-games. Ten years after its original release, the game is now available on Android and iOS. It comes with the extra classes, missions and characters from the Scholarship Edition (released on Xbox 360 and Wii in 2008), while introducing new lighting, textures and character models.

News:: Surprise, Pewdiepie's channel deletion threat was a troll

Well, he technically deleted a channel, I guess.

So that obvious publicity stunt from top YouTuber Pewdiepie came to a close today, and after reaching 50 million subscribers, he revealed that the entire thing was a joke.

In the video below he claims that "media everywhere" reported that his deletion as fact, despite that nearly everyone thought that it was a joke or a troll, before deleting his alternate channel of Jack septiceye2. It's a broad stroke not unlike a lot of traditional media paints for YouTubers that doesn't account for context, so it's fair game, I suppose! If Pewds is a thing you like, you can keep on liking him, and sleep well knowing that he won't be giving up his millionaire status just yet.

News:: Pokemon Generations comes to Japan, weeks after English version

Remember when the US got Metal Gear Solid 2 over two weeks before Japan? It was a huge thing back then, but it happens more often than you'd think even today.

The first six episodes of Pokemon Generations, the new miniseries, are now available in Japanese by way of the show's official YouTube account. If you absolutely positively must watch your anime in Japanese, head on over and give it a look, or just watch the first episode below.

So far I'm really digging the slight worldbuilding this series is doing, especially the second 'sode that has Looker in it -- who's had a major prescence in the last two iteration's endgame events.

News:: Pre-owned Playstation 3 also on sale for $89 at GameStop

It looks like pre-owned and last-gen consoles are on the menu this week at GameStop. In clearing out their warehouse, GameStop has PlayStation 3 Super Slim 500GB console on sale for only $89.99. Currently we're spotting units in black, red, and white color.
These deals are online only so they're sending them out straight from GameStop warehouses (versus local stores). Just a note that while these systems are pictured with a vertical stand, it's actually NOT included.

If your old system is on the fritz, or you need another system for the gaming room, this is a good option without paying for the price of a new console (which is still at about $149 for a new PS3 Super Slim).

Just a note that while we've seen PS3 Slim 160GB models on sale for around this price point - this is the lowest we've seen 500GB units at and they are probably one of the more "newer" PS3 models you can buy online right now.

News:: Gravity Rush 2 gets Christmas livestream, anime trailer

Christmas came early this year! Well, not really, because if it weren't for the delay Gravity Rush 2 would be in my hands right now, but this is close enough.

Sony seems to be thankfully ramping up their efforts to promote the sequel, and will engage in a joint livestream alongside of Spike Chunsoft on Christmas day in Japan, showing off both Gravity Rush 2 and Danganronpa V3. It'll be held at 9:00 PM JST on that day, which is 7:00 AM ET (just when you're getting up to open presents!).

In other Gravity related news, the trailer below gives us a brief look at the Overture anime, alongside of more game footage. Just like Final Fantasy XV's Brotherhood project, this OVA of sorts seeks to bridge the gap between Gravity Rush 1 and 2. We'll finally be able to get our hands on the actual game on January 20.

News:: These screenshot homages from Forza Horizon 3 show how versatile the game is

This is one of the more stunning displays of art I've seen in recent years in the gaming realm. Through the use of mere screenshots, locations, cars, and logos, Imgur user EYuiS managed to craft a journey through the entire history of the racing genre in one fell swoop.

All of the images in the below gallery are from Forza Horizon 3's beautiful photo mode -- "all" EYuiS did was use its given tools and put logos on top of them. A lot of these bring me back, and I think with the exception of maybe two or three sequels or spinoffs, I've played all of them.

The Driver shot with the muscle car really makes me sad, as I played over 100 hours of the original. I'd even role-play and create my own game mode of sorts, following traffic signals as much as I could until I got caught.

News:: Have a look at Four Goddesses Online: Cyber Dimension Neptune's combat and characters with this new trailer

Hey, look. Compile Heart has released a new trailer for the upcoming Japanese release of Four Goddesses Online: Cyber Dimension Neptune. What exactly is Cyber Dimension Neptune? Well, since Destructoid has yet to really cover this game before now, I suppose I’ll have to give a brief run-down of it:

Developed by Tamsoft -- which previously worked on Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed, MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies and more importantly, the still-ongoing Senran Kagura series -- in collaboration with Compile Heart, this upcoming action RPG for the PlayStation 4 takes place in the world of a popular online multiplayer game by the name of “Four Goddesses Online.”

Prior to the release of the latest version of “Four Goddesses Online,” the goddesses of GamesIndustri -- the world in which the Neptunia series takes place -- have been invited to play the game as beta testers. There, they must save the online world from the threat of a demon king.

Basically, it's a game within a game.

Overall, it seems like a fairly standard setup for an RPG, and I've completely lost count of how many fantasy kingdoms that I've saved from demonic monarchs. Thankfully, Neptunia's main draw seems to lie more with its charm and personality, its likeable characters and its fanservice (or "plot").

The trailer itself mostly seems to focus on the game's combat system, which will allow players to map two sets of four skills to each of the Dualshock 4's face buttons in order to utilise abilities or commands of their choosing. The other draw, as hinted at previously, is the game's roster of playable characters. These characters will vary in terms of actual gameplay and abilities, as they've each taken up different RPG character archetypes, such as that of a Mage, a Thief or a Paladin.

Mind you, I feel like this trailer would be a lot better if it included Uzume Tennouboshi from Megadimension Neptunia VII. I'm just putting it out there, Compile Heart.

Another thing that may be slightly more bothersome to many of the illustrious members of the Destructoid community is that while the trailer does show off the catgirl costumes that will be included in the game, these outfits are only going to be made available as pre-order DLC in Japan. It remains to be seen as to whether or not this DLC will be sold separately sometime after its Japanese release date of February 9. Should the game come to the West, I would expect a similar situation to occur here.
