News::Review: National Zombie Park | Rely on Horror

Rely on Horror: "It is rare, but sometimes you see a game that proves, within minutes, that its not something you would seriously recommend to anyone. Maybe it has a great idea at the core, but the product that was crafted around that idea clearly does not live up to it. National Zombie Park, developed by Paper Games, is exactly that: a roguelike zombie survival game that falls short because it looks and plays so poorly that youd almost think it is in pre-alpha."

News::Top 5 Unfinished, But Wish They Were Games for 2015

Since the launch of Steams early access program in 2013 developers have made early access a way of business. Early access provides smaller development teams the funds they need to move a game from concept to reality, often times in stages. Some early access games never catch on and eventually die off, while others are thrust into the national spotlight.

News::What game will you ring in the New Year with?

New Year's Eve was always my favorite holiday growing up. Not only were there yummy snacks galore at whatever party my parents dragged me to each year, but the adults were normally so preoccupied with drinking and pretending to enjoy each other's company that they didn't care what us kids were up to... which meant we could stay up playing videogames ALL. NIGHT. LONG. Battletoads, Bubble Bobble, Ikari Warriors; a lot of the games my brothers and I ended up mastering as kids were owed to late night gaming sessions on December 31st.

As I grew into adulthood, I tried the whole party thing, but watching New York City enter puberty every goddamn year while you stand awkwardly in a crowded kitchen just trying to get to the goddamn cocktail wieners kinda loses its appeal after a while. So instead, this year I will trick my kids into thinking midnight is about 9 o'clock, pour myself a whiskey, and boot up Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare (my most recent obsession). And I couldn't be more excited.

What about you? Skipping the whole party scene this year in favor of playing a good game? Tell us which one! Who knows, maybe you multiplayer-minded folks might even find a good buddy to play with here in the comments.

No matter what you end up doing, we at Destructoid hope you have a safe and happy New Year!

News::Dragon Age: Inquisition Review - The Digital Fix

BioWare had a lot of goodwill to recoup. Despite Dragon Age 2 delivering a solid continuation of the story set up in the much-loved original, it felt rushed. Overused environments, underwhelming visuals, an action-heavy combat system and a condensed game world all combined to cause consternation amongst fans. There was unrest in Thedas, and there was a lot of rebuilding to do. Thankfully, Dragon Age: Inquisition ably demonstrates that an astounding amount can be achieved in four years.

Kirk's Top 12 Games Of 2014

News::Screencheat Review - Complexity Buried Within [NoobFeed]

NoobFeed writes: "Leave it to small studios to think of a basic element thats been in games forever and turn it into something magical like Screencheat. Its a shooter that goes back to the days when shooters were played in splitscreen and every annoying brat gamed the system by looking at their opponents window. In this game, peeking is exactly the goal, which makes for some surprisingly ridiculous antics."

News::Elite: Dangerous Review | Saving Content

Excerpt: "Elite: Dangerous takes the best parts of the series' strengths, as well as other games that have come before it to make it an excellent space fantasy. This is the freshest, prettiest, deepest space adventure you can take on in any game to date. It's ambition is equally met with awe. There are problems, but ones that can hopefully be fixed. Amid some boredom and tedium along the way, there is a game full of stories to be told only through your unique experiences"

News::Gamer Headlines Looks Back at 2014s Most Disappointing Games

Gamer Headlines writes: "2014 is now coming to a close, and lets face it, it wasnt the best year for video games. The start of a new console generation is always a bit rough because we dont get the complete sentiment that games are achieving their full next-gen potential, but the feeling of unsatisfaction was strongly present throughout this year, especially when the big budget AAA releases of the Fall/Holiday season finally hit the market. Dont get me wrong; weve had some exceptional experiences this year with games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Dark Souls II, Bayonetta 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition and indies such as Shovel Knight, Transistor and Velocity 2X, but part of me feels very underwhelmed with the amount of disappointing major releases weve had this year. Let me preface that the following list does not compile the worst games of the year, instead it regroups games that failed to deliver on their promises, games that launched in...

411mania: Ive wrestled with how to write this preview for a few days now. I am Bread sits perfectly in line with other procedural/weird simulator games like Surgeon Simulator (same developer), Octodad, Goat Simulator and so on. Its a game that builds a world with a seemingly easy task Hey, make yourself bread, but due to the controls, makes this an insanely hard prospect. If these games are up your alley, this is one for you.

News::Destiny is the most fascinating game of 2014, mostly for negative reasons

I have roughly seven days of playtime logged into Destiny. I have a level 31 Warlock, Titan, and Hunter who are all one piece away from level 32 -- the current cap. I've completed the new Crota's End raid roughly 20 times, 10 of which I ran the sword for our group. You could say that I've played a lot of Destiny.

Even still, I find myself disliking most of the design decisions Bungie has made, and my opinion of the company has really gone downhill in general. The game is not only a skinner box style loot-treadmill, but it also has a bunch of mind-boggling issues, made worse by the lack of communication by Bungie. It is a textbook example of an overhyped AAA game that failed to meet said hype.

With any luck, the developer will learn from its mistakes, and the game will be worth picking up in 2015. But before that time, I've had a great time experiencing the phenomenon, warts and all.
