News:: First episode of the Splatoon anime is out, turns out to be a motion comic

In case you forgot, about a month ago it was announced that the ongoing Splatoon manga would be receiving an anime adaptation. The release date for the first episode was yesterday, and like anything released online, has spread at a rapid pace. If you were thinking of full on animated battles, you had your expectations way too high.

This is a motion comic, or I guess a motion manga in this case.

Good morning/afteroon/tomorrow, my friends/robots/Gardevoir

It has been made aware to me that, just perhaps, you all enjoy video games. It might even be said that you... like to game with others? Now now, don't be that way, I don't mean to lump you into some sort of box. You're all just such lovely folks, it pains me to watch you, struggling in vain to connect with each other, striving to engage in...

News:: The greatest theme song in all of gaming is clearly the Dragon Quest theme

Madonna once said, “Music makes the people come together.” She also said, “There’s, like no lessons…. There’s, like, no books about anything,” probably in that stupid fake British voice she has going on. She’s right about the music, it does bring people together. Stand in line at a theme park, walk around a mall, as soon as a popular song comes on the radio you should be able to look around and see people mouthing if not outright singing along. It’s also probably an Ed Sheeran song that’s playing.

I can’t make fun of the Halifax ginger because he’s on my iTunes. But over the years, singers like him have been replaced in my life by more and more video game music. I am a huge fan of orchestral recordings and my plate has runneth over the past two decades with all the brilliant music that has come out. From the jazzy fun of Super Mario 3D World to the intense majesty of Metal Gear Solid, my walks and workouts have become a hell of a lot more epic since I’ve replaced Kanye with Koji Kondo. My playlist changes every day, but the same song always gets me started. It’s the song that, when I close my eyes, turns my boring exercise routines in a stunning adventure. It is, as this title implies, the "Dragon Quest Overture."

Theme songs are so incredibly important in gaming. When you put in a cartridge, insert a disc or find your way to the arcade to check out the attract video, it’s the first thing that really gets you in the mood for what you’re about to experience. No single song does that better than the "Dragon Quest Overture." It perfectly captures the fun adventurous spirit of every game in the series. With horns blazing, it announces its arrival like royalty before sweeping you through Koichi Sugiyama’s masterful composition. Whether in midi or backed but a full orchestra, it’s a stunningly powerful way to set the tone for a 40- to 100-hour adventure.

News:: Crab battles and magical girls invade Comiket 92's doujin games

For a good while, I've been interested in going to Japan's Comiket convention, since it's dedicated to people selling their fan works and/or original indie creations. Luckily, Edelweiss (Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin) uploaded a 90-minute trailer of Comiket 92's doujin games, which gives us an idea of what to expect at the event.

As a person who loves bizarre ideas, I found it amusing to see a game where you fight like a real crab. Then there's the fast-paced competitive action title called Magical Girl v.s. Fantasy World: Magical Battle Arena Next, which lets you play as characters from shows like Nanoha, Prisma Illya, Slayers, and Cardcaptor Sakura. If anything, this sounds like the perfect way to test Lina Inverse's Giga and Dragon Slave spell on other magic users.

Other than those two titles, ASTRO PORT's (Supercharged Robot VulkaiserGigantic ArmyRocketron looks like a fun 2D action platformer game, and its jetpack mechanics remind me of Cave Story. All in all, I'm digging a good amount of the event's offerings. With Comiket 92 running from August 11 through 13, let's hope that companies like Playism, Nyu Media, and Carpe Fulgur are scoping the convention for future releases.

News:: Weekend deals: Nintendo Switch available again, plus best Oculus Rift VR bundle yet

Got a about four hundred and change this weekend and want to burn it in a quick flash? There's two gaming path to take this weekend with PC gamers being tempted by a sweet Oculus Rift VR bundle at Best Buy, and GameStop once again stocking in Nintendo Switch and bundling them with various games and accessories.

At Best Buy, you can now pick up an Oculus Rift VR bundled with the wireless touch controller, a free copy of Eve: Valkyrie along with the 7 free games package that comes with all Rift. Priced at only $399, this is one of the best Rift bundle yet.

While half the United States seems to be able to find Nintendo Switch consoles just fine at local retailers, the other half still has shelves empty. They're all sold out online for the $299.99 base price, but GameStop is willing to ship you one if you buy one of their $420+ Nintendo Switch Bundles.

These Nintendo Switch bundles come with games and accessories, like the Switch Joy-Con Zelda Fan Bundle which includes the Switch, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass, Has-Been Heroes, and Zelda Play and Protect Skins. The bundle is not granting you any discounts over purchasing everything separately, but it's also not over charging you, so you'd at least avoid overpaying for a Switch on eBay from resellers. The four available Switch Bundles are listed below and will probably sell out within the next few days based on past experiences.

A new PC Gaming Summer Sale emerged this week at Bundle Stars. There you'll find about 1,500 titles up to 90% with a stacking 10% off coupon code for additional savings. Civilization VI drops to only 32.39 after coupon, which is cheaper than the $36 it was during the Steam Summer Sale of late June. If you're feeling some classic console titles, the $13 SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics and $3 Atari Vault get you ~100 titles each for their historic low price points. A full breakdown of the sale here or we've listed some of the best deals below. Just be sure to add coupon code SUMMER10 to checkout.

News:: Battletoads can kiss my ass

I learned something this week. I learned that humanity is a giant dumpster just waiting to be tipped over by a reasonably sized space rock. I learned that the only consolation for the insanity and the atrocities we have committed as a species is the fact that one day the sun will expand to such a point that the surface of our blue-green planet will boil all life out of existence creating a whole new, fresh start for life. People are just too terrible to one another.
